Hi folks!
After a break of a few months, I'm back!
Well, in a limited capacity at least. Rather than jump back into my old games, I thought I'd keep things fresh by trying something new - hence my arrival here. I've always wanted to try playing Traveller, and am a big fan of Firefly, so this is perfect.
Baron Bruno Suzuki Merchant 1st Officer Jacob Abe is eager to make your acquaintance!

GM:

Does the ship have any spare weapons that we can bring along? Or any spare anything else for that matter?

I think you said earlier that outside the capital we could carry or at least bring along weapons packed away.

Yes, you can each bring a weapon of choice with ammo.

Excellent! In that case, Rourke will select an automatic pistol.

Ota has Rifle - 4 so an Automatic Rifle would be the best bet for him, with an Automatic Pistol as a back-up weapon.

GM and team, I can't recall or figure out from quickly skimming the long unread Little Black Traveller Books, but does the PC gain any bonuses to a skill check from their stats?

I gave Rourke the +2 for his actual skill but no bonus for his EDU.

Re: OOC:

I don’t recall Traveller having an experience system (at least, not the early books).

Re: OOC:

Posted: Mon Jun 20, 2022 4:01 pm
by kabukiman
No, you can't use bonus from the stats (but to use certains skills, you need a minimum number in the stat).
Sorry, the last few days I have been full of work.

Can you remind me how to do skill checks (Forward Observer, in this case)?

Re: OOC:

Posted: Wed Jun 22, 2022 7:41 am
by Snapper
In the original rules, you basically roll 2d6 and add your skill level, that's it. 8+ is a success.

Normally, lack of a relevant skill means a -3 penalty, except for PCs and weapons, who can be considered as having a skill of 0 in all weapons.

I believe Kabukiman is saying your PC can make a skill 0 roll, ie. no bonus or penalty, for Forward Observer or whatever it was. Straight 2d6.

Re: OOC:

Posted: Wed Jun 22, 2022 9:16 am
by kabukiman
Yes, because it is something similar but not exactly the same.

Re: OOC:

Posted: Thu Jul 07, 2022 4:43 am
by Snapper
@Philulhu

Stop me if you already know this stuff. The original Traveller rules had some quite war-game level complex combat rules. Among other things, there were different bonuses / penalties for firing single shot or automatic (4 shot per round) with an automatic rifle.

In the circumstances, a single shot seemed completely appropriate and solved our problem. But if you had fired automatic, you would made 2 attack rolls and potentially hit the cultist-zombie guy twice. Think this has worked out well without wasting ammo, just FYI.

Re: OOC:

Well, my personnel opinion: the rules of traveler are not very good to an investigation game. I can imagine lots of rolls you could have done with coc rules. But this means the game is more "acting" and less "dice".
Well, I'm glad you are all liking the story (full of clichés, I know  )

Re: OOC:

Posted: Fri Sep 02, 2022 3:54 am
by Snapper
The original rules hail from the very early days of role-playing, when war-gaming was a big influence on rules design I think. So combat was a big part of the rules along with trade.

My recollection of playing this as a kid was that the party rarely had any great number of skills, much like us in this game now. A lot of the time, players would say what they wanted to do and make a save against the relevant stat, like INT or EDU, to see if they succeeded. Quick and dirty. That may have been a "house rule" though.

It is fun to play it again after all these years though. Even the newer versions of Traveller have a much greater emphasis on investigation and intrigue, let alone CoC which is if anything anti-combat. I don't mind playing a game that is more acting and less dice for a change.

And full marks to Mr H for heroically role-playing a PC with 1 skill point for all they're worth.

Thank you! I can fly a ship - and that's about it. I do have great physical stats, so I'm not too bad in a fight either, even with 0 skills. Luck has helped there, of course.

Never had the chance to play traveller. Nobody wanted to play science fiction. Even cyberpunk 2020 or stat wars were hard to convince people to play.

I've played Traveller before at a convention, but my first exposure to it was in the 1990s, when I played the computer game MegaTraveller 2. I'm old enough to have played Traveller in the 1980s, but I hadn't discovered it yet.

On a related note, the Characters and Combat Book, p.23 had a list of skills the GM may allow as automatic skill 0 for all PCs, besides weapons:

Air/Raft
ATV
Forward Observer
Steward
Vacc Suit

And are there any modifiers for firing from a moving vehicle?

Re: OOC:

OOC: Moving from a moving vehicle would imply a penalty, but since you are targeting a crowd and not a particular target, there is no penalty.
And yes, you can roll to see if anyone is hit behind.

Yes, this was great, and thank you, Snapper! I also only got to use my skill at the very beginning, as it wasn't useful once we landed. Still, I recall that I needed that +1 to succeed. And I was still able to participate in combat just fine, with a little luck (okay, a lot of luck).

Indeed, my plan was that your were supposed to go to the cave find and destroy the queen. But I notice that would result in a CoC game, but not with the traveller rules, so I change the game.
About a new scenario, I don't know, I was thinking of making a delta green scenario with the pc's investigating the story of season 1 of stranger things.
