January 13 - Giubecca Island

A puzzling headline begins a front-page article found in the Times of London. Three men, all identical in identification, were found dead in the same room of the Chelsea Arms Hotel. Then the home of a valued friend burns to the ground, severely injuring him in the process. It is the beginning of "Horror On The Orient Express" a European campaign set in the winter between January and March of 1923. Over the course of the campaign, the investigators are trying to collect the various pieces of an ancient statue called the Sedefkar Simulacrum. Night falls early then, and each night is long and cold. The campaign is made up of 11 scenarios, taking place in seven nations, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, The Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, Bulgaria, and Turkey. All are stops on the path of the Simplon-Orient Express.

January 13 - Giubecca Island

Post by robertod »

The Venetian night is calm and cloudy, but without wind. The moon is hidden behind a blanket of thick clouds, limiting visibility to the few streetlights that are on. Nanne lives in an apartment on the island of Giubecca. Giudecca is actually a set of eight islands connected to each other, located south of the historic center of Venice. It overlooks the Giudecca canal bearing the same name, opposite the Dorsoduro district, of which the island is an administrative part. Located south of the rest of the city, the Giudecca constitutes a residential area. The indications the investigators get, lead them to a two-story building inhabited by workers, located at the western end of the Giudecca, next to the Palazzo del Molino Stucky. Going towards the artist´s house, the investigators pass the Molino Stucky, the impressive mill a classic and characteristic neo-gothic facade. The waters of the Venetian canal are used to quickly transport the grain to be sent to the island's mill. The strucure gives work at full capacity to more than a thousand workers.
The neighborhood is rather deserted and silent, with few lights on in a couple of homes. Nanni´s address is a two-storey building and his name appears in the doorbell of the ground floor apartment, near the main door. There are no lights inside, the windows are closed, but not with shutters. The back of the building has a rusty metal door.

"Shall we just go up and ring the bell?" asks Felicity.

Archie paused. "At this time of the night...err, morning, maybe a knock first? Then ring?"

“I think I might just watch the back door, artists sometimes have reasons to run away from midnight visitors.”
Clarence has his walking cane in hand and nods to the others,
“I’ll join you once you’ve received a positive welcome.” He trots round to wait by the back door.

Knocking on the door elicits no response. The inside of the house remains silent and dark.
Sense trouble rolls please! Difficulty 4

When Clarence moves away from the group and goes towards the back door, he sees a shadow of a man in a coat and hat who, very stealthily, is entering the house through that door, trying to do so as quickly and silently as possible.

Being a source of trouble herself, Felicity is very good at recognizing it.

Oh my word. Clarence thinks to himself. He silently draws his sword from the cane… and then thinks better of it. He hurries back towards his companions and beckons to them to follow him back to the door.

Felicity hears noises from inside the house, someone moving briskly between the rooms.

“I just saw him sneaking in. Come on, we can get in through here.”
Clarence leads the way through the back door.

Archie pats his coat pocket, making sure his pistol is ready, and then he follows the other two, moving silently as possible.

Cursing inwardly, having completely failed to hear anything - professional embarrassment old man - Andrew follows the others.

Noticing Archie feeling for his gun, he whispers, 'If we can try not to kill anyone and cause an international incident.'

The person that Clarence saw entering locked the door. The followers are forced to pick the lock (OOC: Archie´s Lockpick ability can be used. No rolls needed). They find themselves in a dark house. There´s the smell of burning paper in the air. In one of the rooms, the shadow of a man in a raincoat and hat is rummaging through the drawers. He does not appear to have noticed that someone entered the house.

Archie blushes slightly as the lock opens easily. "I don't suppose you'd believe that I picked that up picking the locked cabinet at my surgery after I lost the key..." he whispers as they slip inside.

As soon as he sees the man, he quietly extracts his pistol. Once Clarence goes for water, he points his pistol at the man, quietly advances to the fireplace, grabs any handy implement with his left hand, and starts trying to drag papers off the stack.

"I wouldn't burn any more of those, friend," he says quietly, gun still trained on the raincoat-wearing man.
