January 11 - Reading the Scroll of the Legs - Clarence

A puzzling headline begins a front-page article found in the Times of London. Three men, all identical in identification, were found dead in the same room of the Chelsea Arms Hotel. Then the home of a valued friend burns to the ground, severely injuring him in the process. It is the beginning of "Horror On The Orient Express" a European campaign set in the winter between January and March of 1923. Over the course of the campaign, the investigators are trying to collect the various pieces of an ancient statue called the Sedefkar Simulacrum. Night falls early then, and each night is long and cold. The campaign is made up of 11 scenarios, taking place in seven nations, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, The Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, Bulgaria, and Turkey. All are stops on the path of the Simplon-Orient Express.

January 11 - Reading the Scroll of the Legs - Clarence

Post by robertod »

Clarence spends all day and part of the night finishing the study and translation of the ancient document found in Lausanne, written in Old Arabic in the 13th century. The Scroll of the Legs contains the history of the Sedefkar Simulacrum, told by Sedefkar the Osmanli, with those thoughts and memories which seemed pertinent. It is the gibbering history of a madman in medieval Constantinople. In the 11th century, the Simulacrum came into the possession of Sedefkar, a gazi Turkman who had fallen from Islam and turned against his amir. Protected behind the impregnable walls of Constantinople, this apostate accrued great wealth. One night Sedefkar was visited by the statue’s maker, someone Sedefkar names as the Skinless One. It is not clear who or what the Skinless One, but but the text suggests that it is a kind of demigod. The Skinless One demanded worship from Sedefkar, and in return was taught the Ritual of Enactment, a ritual that would awake the magical powers of the statue. The powers that the Simulacrum grants to its owner are diverse and, taken as a whole, are powers beyond things imaginable by human understanding.

By means the arcane forces unleashed by the awakened Simulacrum, Sedefkar increased his magical energy and learned other spells from the Skinless One, like the one that allowed him to faultlessly and perfectly assume the flesh and guise of another human being. In addition to this, the Simulacrum creates a bond with the Skinless One, something like a Faustian deal with the devil, allowing the owner of the statue to even occasionally summon the demigod's presence on earth to act on his behalf.
Neverthless, by activating the Simulacrum, Sedefkar would become a thing of great uncleanness and would corrupt into something inhuman, unless he performed a ritual of cleansing with the statue every four days. Passing from one body to another, from one flesh to another through time, Sedefkar defeated death and lived well over one hundred years. When he wrote of the Simulacrum, he gave it his name, and thus it became the Sedefkar Simulacrum. He composed the Sedefkar Scrolls in 1203, five symbolic texts which conveyed most of what he knew. Late in the scroll, Sedefkar refers to the imminent arrival of the white destroyers, just before the Fourth Crusade, at the start of the thirteenth century. Indeed, the Fourth Crusade breached the walls of Constantinople in 1204. Sedefkar hoped to escape with the conquerors, but a Venetian cabal known as The Unburdened Flesh sought the simulacrum for themselves. Frankish knights under orders from Count Baldwin followed the Venetians and exposed Sedefkar. The Scroll of the Legs ends with Sedefkar last reports, sadly sure he would not be able to escape the Venetians for long.

Clarence looks up from the scroll. “Diabolical and yet so fascinating.” He realises how late it is and how hungry he is. He rings for room service and paces the room trying to assimilate what he’s read.

“This Sedefkar made a pact with the devil and gained great power, but a lot of good it did him in the end. Although, there’s nothing to show he didn’t survive.
The Simulacrum seems to have been broken up but each part still emits evil.” He shudders.
“If someone collected all the parts of the statue and somehow rejoined them, then…”
He lapses into furious thinking as he walks back and forth.

Clarence’s stomach rumbles in response. He considers room service but then decides he could do with a walk. He puts the scrolls into his jacket pocket and sets off downstairs to look for dinner.
