A well made but rundown looking hotel. Two stories with an office in front.

As characters make thier way into the hotel rooms they find themselves on the second story with a view to the street. Coming in at various times, Ralph occupies 1b, Rachel 2b and Albert and Bill share 3b, a double on the corner. All the guests will find a note scrawled on familiar greenish paper- "Room 4b 9pm. Knock 3 times pause knock twice pause knock 3 times."

A barrel chested man with a high and tight haircut and Hawaiin shirt ushers everyone into 4b where they are meeting for the first time. He allows for introductions as he pours himself a whiskey. He does not offer to share nor are there any other glasses visible in the increasingly diminutive room. "Take off your coats and step on in here, we've got plenty to go over. I'm Mr. Golf, your watcher."

"Good now that the niceties are out of the way I can give you the details of the case. We've had seven dead bodies show up within a 20 mile radius over the last month and a half. Official cause of death- scared to death." His face turns grave and he lays out several photographs of faces frozen permanently in sheer terror.

Bill was in two minds about bringing Albert to the meeting but thought he ought to let him know what he is getting himself into. Looking at the photographs he was beginning to regret that decision.

'Jesus' he says, turning away. 'The boy didn't need to see that.'

feel free to catch up with rolls, questions or comments as the briefing continues for the San roll, pass=lose 0, fail= lose 1d3

Mr.Golf continues
"Not a whole lot of similarities jumping out between these, what we're now calling victims. Local police aren't particularly helpful and we're trying to keep a low profile but we have obtained permission to have you all examine the most recent victim, a Ms. Mary Worth. We were able to play it off as federal Forensics helping an understaffed force so don't expect to throw your weight around too much, again we're under the radar. The usual questions- none of the vics have enemies to speak of, they run the gamut from single person families to mothers, fathers and daughters. Youngest victim is 14 years old." Pauses giving a meaningful look around the room pausing on Albert. "We don't come out to these things for nothing, we expect foul play and we need you all to get to the bottom of it. I mentioned a 20 mile radius, all the deaths center around the Somerville neighborhood just west of this hotel which will be used as your base of operations as long as it remains viable. I've left the address for Mary Worth, her husband found her yesterday afternoon and the body has remained undisturbed, you're scheduled for a 9am investigation. Besides that, contact me only on a necessary basis, Bill and Albert's room has a phone and I've provided my number, if that phone rings answer it. Other than that if you have questions now would be the time."

"One of our contacts in the Boston medical community brought it to light once a pattern started to emerge, who will for thier safety remain anonymous. One thing we do agree on with local law enforcement is keeping the story out of the limelight. There are at least two reporters being kept quiet the more high profile of the two being a man named Ben Daughtry, a writer for Bostons biggest local news paper, New Boston times."

"Trust is at an all time low so we need to keep eyes off of our sources as much as possible. I can tell you that the victims were brought to the Somerville hospital, three bodies remain in thier morgue and the other three have been cremated or buried at the behest of thier families. This file will stay with your team, it's for your eyes only and has the names and addresses of the deceased with some background information where available. Details are sparse as we weren't able to use the usual channels of procurement."

"What are the dates and times of death?" asks Ralph. "Maybe there's a pattern to the amount of time between them, and it would be good to be able to predict how long before the next one. I'd also like to plot these addresses on a map of Somerville to see if there's a geographical pattern."

Bill pores over the map, marking the names and dates of the murders and the order they were performed. 'I can't see an obvious pattern, unless he's making an oddly shaped star. He seems to favour the end of the week, Friday and Saturday, but not exclusively.'

Rachel blanched at the sight of the dead bodies - that certainly wasn’t what she thought she’d be involved in. She stepped back on shaky legs, finding a seat and sitting down.

”Why… why have I been involved in this?” she asked.

Studying the annotated map carefully, Bill tries to figure out a pattern in the deaths. Turning it around, peering at it, is that...?

Bill has 85% Idea roll and 70% Spot Hidden - if we're looking for patterns in the map I'd say it's one of those, Idea if it is more complex, Spot Hidden if it is say a simple geometric pattern. Here's my roll LLd%. That's be an extreme success on the Idea roll, hard success on the Spot Hidden. Bill is on fire

Please take 1d3 San loss

Bill isn't able to say for sure but the pattern does have an unnatural quality, certainly not purely random. The epicenter that the incidents seem to spring out from hold many areas of interest as it is also the town center. Bill spots a hospital, a large residential section, a post office and a sanitarium. Mr. Golf, seeing Rachel's reaction in particular strolls to the cabinet and produces four rocks glasses. He offers Rachel a drink and motions likewise to the others.

”Thank… thank you’” said Rachel, taking the glass and sipping from it. She looked up and said, ”Who are you all? And why are we here?”

Albert goes to sit next to Rachel.
“Don’t worry, Miss. You’re very brave for a dame; most of ‘em would faint dead away. Mr Gilmore there, well he’s super smart and ‘ll track who dunnit toot suite. I’m his special assistant, Oo!” He sees the glasses being filled and leaps up to get one.

Bill slaps down Albert's hand as he reaches for a drink, 'No chance son. It's against the law twice over for you.'

Taking his own drink Bill knocks it back, 'I don't usually but...'

Laying out the map he points out the centre of town with the hospital and sanitarium. 'It's possible he's based around here and coming outwards to commit the crimes. I'm assuming it's a he and I'm assuming it's a particularly screwed up murderer. Because it usually is.'

"Yes, don't worry, Miss," says Ralph. "The pictures are very unnerving." He forgoes the drink, as Prohibition is in effect. Technically it's legal as long as nobody is actually paying for it, but it would still feel wrong. "We should hope not; it's hard to put handcuffs on a ghost. But we do need to consider that if we do find the murderer - or murderers - how to avoid ending up dead ourselves."

Albert’s not worried about missing out on a drink; he’s already on cloud nine as it is. He grins at Bill, says goodnight to everyone and heads back to 3B, thinking he’s far too excited to sleep.
When Bill gets back to the room, he’ll find Albert conked out, already fast asleep.

Finishing up with Mr Golf, Bill retires to his room. He sits down heavily on the bed, sighing deeply. Looking at the snoring figure of Albert he shakes his head, 'I shouldn't have involved the boy.'

But he needs some legs to chase down the leads, and he isn't getting any younger. It's about the investigation, always has been, one more connundrum to solve, one more wrong'un brought to justice.

Absent mindedly he takes out and strips his pistol. 'Something about this case smells funny.' He's done a few of these hush hush jobs before, not sure exactly where they come from but he suspects someone high up in Treasury, maybe Waldren, but it didn't much matter. There was a job to be done and Bill Gilmore knew how to do it, 'Still knows how to do it.'

But still, something was off and he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Why all these civilians involved? 'Frightened to death? Bullshit!

Still, it kept his mind off...off other things.

Changing into his nightclothes Bill ensures the door is double locked and places his pistol on the bedside table, away from Albert's reach.

Rachel headed for the room she was booked into. She closed the door and leaned against it, feeling exhausted. She wondered again why she was here? The men seemed to know what they were doing - well, except for Albert who was little more than a kid.

Should she stay or go home? She knew her father would tell her to be brave, to stick it out, so she resolved to stay, although she pulled the dressing table across the door, just to be on the safe side…
