IC-Ep 3-A Mission From God(Gui only)

[Mr. Handy]

"Of course, Monsieur," said the servant, pocketing the coins discreetly. "His room is behind that door." He pointed to a door right behind Gui.

How many coins exactly are you giving him? You have 5 francs left.

How much would a franc buy at the time?

It buys a decent amount, A servant generally earns about four francs per day, and one franc is considered a standard tip.

Gui slipped the servant a couple of the silver coins. ”Thank for your discretion, Monsieur. You are doing your master a great service!” he said quietly, before padding over to the door that the servant had indicated. He looked at the servant and nodded down the corridor, hoping the man would take the hint and move on…

He tapped lightly on the door, before leaning in close so his cheek almost touched the timber. ”Father Ignacio?”, he called quietly. ”It is Gui. I have what you asked me to retrieve.”

The servant quickly made himself scarce once he had the coins.

Shortly afterward, Ignacio opened the door from inside, wearing a robe. "Please, come inside," he said, stepping out of the way so Gui could enter. The room didn't look much different than his own. A lit candle in a holder was on the writing desk. "Just to be clear, I did not actually ask you to retrieve it. I merely stated that if you happened to come across it, I would be interested in taking a look."

”Semantics, Father Ignacio. You either want to see it or you don’t,” Gui replied testily.

”If you prefer, I can put it back and you can enjoy the surprise tomorrow,” he said.

[Mr. Handy]

"I want to see it," said Ignacio.

Gui pulled out the manuscript from within his jerkin, holding it out Father Ignacio to take. When the cleric reached to take it from him, Gui didn’t at first release it.

Looking at Ignacio shrewdly, he said, ”Tell me, Father. What is the church’s current position on fornication?”

[Mr. Handy]

"It is a sin, of course," said Ignacio, taking hold of the script. He looked disgusted by the symbol, but not unduly disturbed. "An all too common one. There is of course the matter of your indulgence. Let's go over to the writing desk, and I'll get it ready for you. You'll have to specify for which sin you want it. Shall we say theft? Or would you prefer an indulgence for fornication, or some other sin?"

”You misunderstand, Father. It’s not for me, it’s for the Chevalier and the woman with whom he was fornicating, which I was in the unfortunate position to witness whilst on your mission. Unfortunately, he is a prideful, boastful prig so I don’t think an indulgence is really the way to go. I wouldn’t want to embarrass the poor lady involved, but I think some righteous condemnation of him, publically delivered, would seem a fitting recompense for my efforts,” said Gui, as he followed Father Ignacio over to the table.

"The agreed reward was the indulgence," said Ignacio, taking out a scroll, a quill, and a pot of ink. "You are welcome to it, and I think you could use it. It would shorten your stay in Purgatory considerably. As for the Chevalier, it is a pity that a strong man can be so weak. I think it best for me to approach him privately and give him the opportunity to confess. That is how the Inquisition operates. If he lies - and I will be able to tell - then a public shaming may be in order, seeing as I cannot put him to the question under the circumstances."

Gui rolled his eyes. Was it too much to ask for some public humiliation with a bit of stoning thrown in? What was the inquisition coming to?! Standards appeared to be slipping…

”As you wish, Father,” he said. ”We can only hope he takes heed and does not lead any other poor souls into temptation.”

”As for my own indulgence, I expect some uncharitable people may consider my mission tonight as ‘theft’, so even though I did it with the best of intentions,” he paused, with a hand on his heart, looking to the heavens piously, ”It is better to be safe than sorry. So, yes, let my indulgence refer to removal of the manuscript and other ‘offences’ to be taken into consideration…”

"Very well," said Ignacio. He sat at the desk and completed the indulgence, which he handed to Gui. It was of course written in Latin. "I shall read the script right away. I need to be awake for Matins in a couple of hours anyway. If, as I suspect, the script is blasphemous, heretical, or otherwise unholy, I shall inform the Duc as soon as he awakens in the morning."

”In which case, I will leave you to your reading, Father,” said Gui with a bow of his head.

”I will see you in the morning,” he said, and headed for the door.

[Mr. Handy]

"Good night," said the priest. "May God go with you."

Gui will head back to his room, unless any opportunities present themselves on the way.

Gui returned to his room without incident. When he got there, it was around midnight.

Arriving at his room, Gui quickly checked to see if there was any sign that anyone had been there in his absence. He then examined the concealed door to see if there was any way to prevent it being opened, or failing that, he leant a chair against it, so that if it were opened, he would hear the noise and wake.

Once he was satisfied all was well, he changed into his nightshirt and went to bed, with his knife and his purse tucked under his pillow, lest he need them in a hurry. Sleep came eventually as he re-played the events of the evening in his head, wondering what the new day would bring.

There was absolutely no sign that anyone had been in Gui's room in his absence. It seemed possible for someone with the right skills to jam the secret door's mechanism, but he didn't really have them.

Gui, you may roll Repair/Devise to try to jam the secret door. If that fails, you can then just put a chair against it.
