The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

1517, Auvergne, France: The Duc d'Auvergne is hosting an elaborate gathering culminating in a masquerade ball in his palace in Vyones, to which he has invited quite a few notable people. Travelers from throughout Europe and North Africa are in attendance to see and be seen. But there are some strange unseen things lurking behind the scenes that may put everyone in danger. Can Story, Elizabeth, Brook, and others attending the party unravel the mysteries and prevent madness from reigning supreme?

This is Classic Doctor Who meets Call of Cthulhu, the sixth of a series of connected adventures set in different eras and locations that includes The Terror Out of Time, The Ninth Planet, The Shadow Over Dunwich, The Brotherhood of Death, and The Horror in the Blackout.

Shame, because this would be most inspirational…

Heh, heh! I'm a big Blackadder fan too.

The rolls are a little below average overall, but you have a few good scores, and there's nothing abysmal.

The occupational skills for a gentleman thief are: Conceal, Craft(Locksmith), Fast Talk, Hide, Insight, Sneak, Spot Hidden, and one other skill as a personal specialty. Your character will fit in nicely, and I'm sure there will be some nice things to steal. Some of it won't even be cursed. ;)

A little above average in fact, with no stats below 10. That 17 EDU to start with is pretty sweet, and the money isn't bad either.

Status is treated like any other skill. It starts at 15%, and you're free to spend hobby points (or occupational skill points if you want to choose it as your specialty skill) to raise it as high as you like. I've heard that the new edition of Dark Ages has Status ranges for occupations like 7th edition does, but the version I'm using doesn't have that.

I'm sorry I forgot money and income. You can have (1D4 + 1) x 50 francs, with a yearly income of 1800 francs.

Feel free to construct your characters in the Character Creation/Rules threads. I'll review them and post them in the Character Sheets thread when they're complete. You can include an equipment wish list. I'll determine the costs for everything, let you know the prices, and deduct it from your starting money. If you overspend, you'll need to pare down the list.

OK Mr Handy, Jacques du Baudin is ready to be checked.

I have no idea how Status equates but with Status 60, can Jacques maybe hope to claim a title like "Chevallier" or "Capitan" or some such?

Also, consider the "Background" entirely changeable, I was taking a stab at the setting but you might have certain requirements etc.

Status 60% is good for a prominent knight, so Jacques can have a title like that. The background is good too. The adventure is set in the city of Vyones in Auvergne, a province in south central France. Jacques would probably have taken a ship from Rhodes to Marseilles and journeyed inland, stopping off at Vyones on the way back to Paris and staying there for the celebration.

The introduction thread is now up, which everyone is free to read. I'll be starting the in character threads for the players one at a time. I'll start with the TARDIS crew, as the regeneration scene needs to take place. I'll start the 1517 characters in their own threads later. When you see your thread, feel free to read and post in it. Please don't read the threads that don't have your character in them. After the adventure concludes, you can go back and read all of the threads, including secret details in spoiler buttons with the characters' names on them, which only their players are allowed to read.

Mr Handy, did you post somewhere that these are all based on the styles of the different incarnations of The Doctor?

I wonder then, if it's not a spoiler, what Doctor this adventure might be inspired by?

I recall a 4th Doctor and (ever lovely) Sarah Jane adventure called the Mask of Mandragira or something very similar. Set in a similar time period too. I don't think I've watched it in 30 years, mind.

Yes, I have mentioned that before, and well spotted! You're correct, The Masque of Mandragora is one of the inspirations for this adventure. That one was indeed set in early Renaissance Italy, I believe in 1492.

The other adventures' inspirations are:
  • The Terror Out of Time: This one's also heavily Fourth Doctor influenced, though it owes more to The Pyramids of Mars.
  • The Ninth Planet: This one's inspired by Second Doctor "base under siege" stories, though the First Doctor's final adventure The Tenth Planet fits the same formula, and its name is very close. I also borrowed from it for the regeneration in this campaign. This scenario also references The Enemy of the World, a Second Doctor story.
  • The Shadow Over Dunwich: This adventure is inspired by Third Doctor UNIT adventures, most notably The Sea Devils.
  • The Brotherhood of Death: This scenario is inspired by First Doctor historical stories, particularly The Romans.
  • The Horror in the Blackout: This one owes something to Seventh Doctor stories, particularly The Curse of Fenric

Thank you. Masque of Mandragora is a great story, and Sarah Jane Smith is indeed lovely. She's almost my favorite companion, second only to Liz Shaw (who those of you in Groovy Ghastly Affair have sort of met).

I plan to start the other players' threads this weekend.

I’m off on some sort of gruelling holiday cycling around Pembrokeshire this week so I’m not sure I’ll be able to post until Friday.
