Chapter 3- Borneo

Two days latter...
You are aboard a small passenger airplane, a few minutes away from landing at an airstrip near the headquarters of the military command in charge of enforcing the quarantine. The equipment (including lot's of food and water in bootles) is strapped in at the rear of the compartment.
Mount Kinabalu rises towards the sky to the left of the airplane as it darts through low cloud cover.

OOC: Everybody makes a spott hidden roll.

Crowley, as ever, is much cheerier while on an aircraft in flight. His eyes gleaming with excitement, he peers attentively out of the windows. Periodically, he comments of the attributes of the party's aircraft and the pilot's style.

Father Malone is also happier to be back out in the field. Any excuse to get away from the stuffiness of the university. He studies the Borneo jungle below, it seems more like home to him now than the bustle of New York.

When Crowley is almost near the pilot, you all feel a shock, like if something had crashed in it.

Butch: you see suddenly a head in the window... without a face. No eyes, no mouth.
Roll sanity. If fail, loose 1d6. If you pass, loose 1 point.

Crowley sees two creature breaking the window of the cockpit makimng the pilot and co-pilot fly away...
Another creature smashes in the rear, where all the equipment is...
And you hear several creatures in the ceiling of the airplane.

Alex desperately reloads his revolver and shotgun before looking up to see what is going on around them. He pulls up his black shirt to reveal livid bruising from where the creature slammed into him. 'So those were nightgaunts you say? And what exactly is one of those when it is at home? Some sort of demon no doubt.'

He sees Harry going to help Crowley, who looks like he took a real battering from the fight. 'Wait a minute, wait a minute, I'll be right over.' He supposes the hero of the hour should get a bit of attention. Alex hauls the medical kit out of the wrecked aircraft and joins Harry to help him look at Crowley's injuries.

Alex will roll First Aid - Harry can too because you can work together and it is a success if either of you pass. You regain 1d4HP for a success. Then Alex will start looking at his own wounds and will invite Harry to take a look as well. If we have time later Alex (or Shapiro) could try some Medicine as well.FdFL55%d%FdHLF55%d%

There are large rodents called Zoogs and then there are some elephant type ones, Buopoth the tribe calls them.”

“Now, I know you’re all wondering, what are African animals doing in Borneo.”

You follow slowly, avoiding the trees, but you can resume after a while in the normal speed.
The dirt track comes to an end, and you see a farm with a plantation. Tents and other makeshift shelters are huddled around a plantationstyle house that overlooks the tobacco fields, which are surrounded on all sides by the forest. At the side of the building sits an old truck. Approximately two hundred local people remain in the camp. A (probably) middle east man, with a high-quality suit in good condition, wide brimmed hat, neat hair, followed by several worker come in your direction.

Some days latter before even a new team arrived, there was an eartquake. After that, strange flowers bloomed and the trees bearing fruit previously unseen in the area appeared. The locals even if they are converted to christianity and to islam, started to say it was a bless from the god of the mountain, Well, a new team arrived, and before they could even mount their stuff, the fruits started to wither; the locals blamed the new team saying they were responsible for the anger of the god. And some days ago, people started to get sick. The people of the company was also blamed for it but they said it was hepatitis and asked your help and here you are. Crowley is still idly curious. Looking back at Kazi, he asks, "What brought you all the way from Damascus to here?"

'Well hepatitis is usually transmitted through the faeco-oral route,' he notes wryly. 'So it isn't inconceivable that it could be carried through contaminated fruit. Hepatitis, or another infection. It would be helpful to take a sample from someone who is in the very early stages of the disease, to try and analyse the organism. Someone not yet infectious, for safety reasons, you understand.'

"I was in the army in the Great War but was put in service duty here. My father was a merchant and when he died I returned here and with my part of his fortune I decide to buy this property that was near bankrupt; the owner spend all his money in gambling, women and liquor; it wasn't very dificult to make this profitable. Well, if you want to test people, you have a lot of my workers, you can make all the tests you want, just solve this mess".

"Very well, I'l do it iimediatly. just help me bring the machine".
With your help, he bring it from the box.

At first glance, it appears to be a confusing mass of glass pipes and tubes woven through a system of gears and brass apparatus, with a large control panel on top. On the control panel is a row of ten small glass-lined indentations resembling Petri dishes, each a couple of inches across.
The workers are lined in front of the machine. Some seem completly healthy (like the first one), others are in terible shape, coughing and even vomiting; the ones that are worst, are in barracks.

Hee asks for a sample of the saliva of the first one who is very suspicious, but comply. Shapiiro puts it in a dish. A large button at the end of the row of dishes initiates the testing process. The sample is then run through a different series of tubes connecting to varying apparatus to test for an array of criteria. 10 minutes latter a green light appears and means that the analysis is complete and a series of numbered wheels (in groups of three, in three rows, on the far side of the panel from the dishes) turn to show a series of numbers. These numbers are then referenced in a manual compiled by Caduceus. The manual is spread over several 1,000- page volumes, each of densely printed type. The resulting numbers reveal the technical specifications of the infectious subject (lethality, stages of infection, time-spans, and so on), as well as the chemical formula for an antidote (including an assessment if its effectiveness). Another 10 minutes latter he finally says with a somber voice:
"The machine has identified the sample as yellow death, stage one. I'l manufacture a cure immediatly for everyone. I won't bother to test everyone, it will take too much time. Those that are still in stage one will be cured, the others are dooned anyway. About those that are in the barracks, I can only assume that they are already in the phase 2 or 3 and we cannot do anything for them, better to let them die in peace."
He starts immediatly working.

"Mount me please a tent and then I'l start to create the maximum I can; I don't know how many, this has never been tried at this scale. Then try to ask the locals everything you can to detect who is the agent from the organization responsable for this; the disease was created by a serpent man and we must try to discover him."

“You could ask everyone who wants the antidote to take their shirt off. We can then look for scales. If someone refuses- then that in itself is suspicious.”
Jan suggested.
“I want to take a walk round the area- check out these strange beasts and flora- make sure the bad guys don’t get the jump on us.”

You go in direction of the survey camp; after a quick walk, in a dirty road, you arrive at an area that has been cleaned from trees; there are several tents and western people analysing maps and samples. They look surprised at you.

A tall man appears and in british english asks:
"Hi, I'm Richard Clements responsable for the survey, so we cut the trees to make some diggings Yes, most of my men are sick; two actually died and we had to stop the work, The military don't let us go out. So, you have a cure or something like that? Those stupid natives have been blaming us of some curse created by a local god who is angered with our survey

"That is more complicated then that. You see, there was a first team that was explorng the area and they sent a message saying they found something, obviously diamonds or gold, but they didn't say what because a rival company could intercept it; anyway, they all died with the earthquake. We arrived some time latter and the locals were all happy because they were getting rich crops and strange fruits that nobody had ever seen between this area and the mountain; Anyway, after a few days, the fruits started to wither and the first sick people appeared. Obviously the peasants blaned us, by saying that since we had started to make diggings, the god of the mounbtain have beens enraged and was punishing everyone. And no, I don't know the name of the god, why should I? And we haven't be able to find anything we are still cleaing the debris. But now, that you tell, there was a guy here, a french adventurer exploring the area that vanished; some days latter one of the members of my expedition also vanished. I presumed that they both tried to escape the quarantine zone that the army created."

"Well, let's take this one step at a time. Can you have the least sick people in your camp come here and get tested? Then we can figure out what variation of infection this is and synthesize an antidote, if possible." Butch says authoritatively. "Then we can investigate the field and see if we can tell what is causing this."
