The First Test!

If I've set the forum (this one 'Dice Testing') correctly then a 'Dice rolls' tab should be visible in the blue area below the posting window/area see image:
Screenshot_2021-05-12 Play YSDC - Edit post.png
Rolls are entered into the 'Roll notation' input box - then clicking the 'Rill the dice' button. Dice rolls can then be added inline to the post (as is possible with images).

This is roll #3 2d%

Permissions need to be set to allow dice, allow editing and deletion.

Hmmm. I'm afraid I still don't know how this works.

You should use the inline Action under the Dice rolls tab next to your roll, like this:
d%
I think you should also use "d%" instead of "1d100." I got it working last night in one of my own games, for an NPC's roll.

The Dice link at the top left has full instructions.

One thing I noticed is that now we're restricted to only available sides (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, and 100). Is there any way that restriction could be lifted? Sometimes I need to pick random numbers from nonstandard dice.

I'm being dense.

I found the "dice tester" and I can make that work.

However, I cannot find the image provided in the first post in this thread. The one that has "Options/Attachments/Poll creation/Dice Rolls" and everything else shown; the "roll notation" and "roll the dice" and all that.

This includes the "Actions" mentioned by Mr. Handy. The only place I see all this stuff is in the linked image in the first post.

'Sides' (ie number of sides for the die) has to be added via the ACP - I don't know why, it just is. The extension must not use a standard dice parser, libraries for this definitely exist. This being the case only site admins can add more dice. ACP -- > Extensions --> Diceboard

The first image shows the top half of that section and where it has 'Available sides' (7 sides) is actually how many types of dice are available.
The second image shows the bottom half of that section and where it has 'Dice sides' is they type of dice that the roller accepts (in this case d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100) - the d100 wasn't added by default, I added that dice (and this is why the 'dice skins' (dice images) aren't valid any more).
So, you could add a d13 (for instance) if you wanted, I guess - but (if, as I suspect this doesn't use a standard dice parser library) this may not work correctly.

When you 'click' reply you should see the screen like this:

Dice rolls are in the section under the reply box.

Fantastic!
So, it's not possible to see the extra options (adding images and dice) in the 'quick reply' section - this may have been the issue?

Looks like that is correct.

However, it appears when I edit, as I am doing now.

So, DICE ROLLS have to be enabled on a case by case basis in Game Forums. This new roller works differently enough from the old one to make things a little awkward (new procedures) etc. and also introduces permissions to edit/remove rolls - I'll start adding dice rolls to game forums but setting may have to be finessed later .

EDITING A POST:

Code: Select all

test

Looks like that is correct.

However, it appears when I edit, as I am doing now.

[roll=10]2d20[/roll]
The roll appears (when editing) as above - this code tells the parser to fetch the actual roll from the database (in the above instance, roll id 10 in the database). YOu shouldn't ever edit the [roll] code directly - also (YMMV here) but if you're editing dice rolls then you really didn't want the random outcome and shouldn't be rolling dice (I'm not saying that's what you were doing, I know you were just familiarising yourself with a new function) - i'ts my personal bugbear about 'fudging' dice results.

I get a Secure Connection Failed error (SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG) whenever I submit a post tonight, though last night it was working fine:
error.png
I couldn't include the attachment of the screenshot for some reason. I get an error saying I am not allowed to access the attached file when I try to preview or submit. The submission did succeed, however.

It still submitted my posts when the first error happened as well.

I had a similar issue logging into the Administration Control Panel, but with a blank page. I got the error again when logging out of the ACP, and for a few other board functions.

I also oppose fudging dice and always let them fall where they may. It's a lot more fun too. Unexpected dice rolls can also take the story in a more interesting direction.

Seems the issue was caused by the port being added in the url. Not sure how I managed to screw that up.

Unvalidated users can post on this board. There's a spammer that just did it twice. The account was created over a year ago.

I think that the permissions we set to deal with accounts validated, etc. have been reset - I'll look into this.
In the mean time - I've added modules to link registration to the 'stop forum span service', actioned captcha and also added the 'justification' field - anyone registering has to justify why they should be authorised, this is a required field and should help further weed out problems.

Thanks! I had to reactivate Starspawn338's account last night when I got a notification that it needed it. There were other notifications for new users, but I don't trust them, as most of their names fit a format commonly used by spammers. with a first name followed by the first three letters of a last name, the first of them capitalized.

Also, the dice don't appear when viewing posts while not logged in, whereas they did with the old roller (though it didn't show the dice skins, just the numbers). In addition, if you have multiple tabs open and log in to one of them, the other tabs no longer register that you're logged in, and you have to log in again for each one when you try to reply to a post. I typically open up a tab for each game I'm in where I need to post to read them and only later log in when I have time to post.

I notices that things weren't always redirecting to https - so I have updated the htaccess to force https and also to force the 'www' part of the url.
The dice not being visible if your not logged in is probably a permissions issue.
Tabs and logging in maybe has something to do with the use of https or not and redirects - will have to test

No need to validate these - see their justification for having an account:
