Anna quietly starts the car and pulls off. She hopes Archie has better luck with Mrs Steadman than she has.

Anna pulled out and began driving west after her passengers got in her car. "Doctor, do you think my mother will ever be able to leave the sanitorium?" asked Madeline.

Seating plan,I think the polite 1940s thing to do would be Archie take the front passenger seat after opening a rear door for Mrs Steadman.
Archie doesn't have anything else he wants to discuss with her besides polite chit chat.

'It is a little more complicated than that. I suspect your mother may be speaking the truth about some of what she says but that does not mean she is in a sound mind' says Anna. 'And if I was to say that to Dr Stoddard it is more likely I would find myself admitted to hospital rather than that she was discharged.'
