IC-Ep 3-Lost Girl(Brook only)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Near Steadman's Warehouse - Limehouse, London, England
7:40 PM - Sunday, September 8, 1940

Brook Davies fled from the warehouse, back the way she had come, and into the night. The sky was dark, but searchlights crisscrossed the sky searching for German aircraft, and there were plenty of them roaring overhead. She could hear the crump of explosions in the distance, and while they were creeping nearer, they had not reached her yet. However, in the dark and in the absence of street signs, it was difficult to know which way to turn.

Brook darted through the deserted and dark streets, looking for any familiar sights from where she passed before. If only she hadn't been so focused on the Steadmans...

Brook was utterly and hopelessly lost in the blacked out streets. While London was home to her, this was a different time, and the lack of signs and lights made it impossible to get her bearings. However, she had decent enough night vision that she was able to see the Steadmans' warehouse in the distance. She saw James Steadman staring slack-jawed at something large and indistinct that had a faint red glow. Madeline stood near him, a small pistol in one hand and something else in the other. Catherine stood behind them, gesticulating wildly. And there on the ground in front of the group was a sudden spark of light in the hands of Eugene, who was lying before them. The indistinct form had been wrapped around him, but it released him and slithered into the shadows as soon as the light appeared.

"Heeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllppppppppp! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!" Eugene screamed.

The moving darkness let out a shrill, inhuman shriek.

Brook froze at the sound of Eugene's screams and the creature's shrill cry. Her mind racing, she tried to remember what they'd discovered about the monsters. Lights....they were afraid of lights. But there was a black out, and german planes above in the sky. Creeping closer, she desperately tried to come up with an idea to save Eugene from those terrible people and their horrid pet. The poor man did not deserve to die like Nelly did.

Brook knew that she needed bright light, but this was the one place where she couldn't find any. Her electric torch was better than nothing, but otherwise there was no light except for those searchlights going back and forth in the sky...

Of course, that was it! The searchlights were intensely bright, and there was one of them on a nearby street corner, being operated by a woman wearing a tin hat helmet. There was a clear line of sight from there to the shadows where the creature lurked. Granted, shining the light on it was like lighting up an enormous neon sign to the Germans saying "Bomb here!" However, that was probably preferable to the alternative.

Brook looked at the searchlight on the corner, then to the warehouse. Maybe it wouldn't be such a great loss if the germans bombed that place...She keeps an eye on the shadows where the flying monster disappeared, and runs over to the woman in the tin hat. On her way, she tries to come up with a good excuse for the officer to shine her light at those shadows.

Brook thought quickly and realized that there was no way this woman would agree to shine a searchlight at anything on ground level, for fear that it would draw German bombs. Her best bet was to convince the woman to leave the searchlight entirely so that Brook could direct it herself. That wouldn't exactly be easy, but she had to have heard the scream.

Madeline pointed her pistol at Eugene, who sprang to his feet and charged forward. Instead of shooting him, she flipped open the little box she held in her other hand. However, he averted his gaze from it and rushed past her, swinging wildly at Catherine. Catherine pointed a finger at him, and he was suddenly stricken, collapsing in a writhing heap as liquid oozed over his body and the tiny light slipped from his hand and was extinguished.

"Stay here!" cried the woman, leaving the searchlight and running toward the warehouse. This gave Brook all the opportunity she needed to turn the searchlight so that the beam flooded the warehouse in intense brightness. She saw the most horrible thing she could ever imagine looming over Eugene, about to strike. It looked like an enormous bat with a single, three-lobed burning red eye, and it was somehow insubstantial, as though made of darkness itself. The monster let out a hideous wail as parts of it seemed to dissolve away, and it fled into the warehouse through the open door. Though it was clearly too large to fit through the doorway, its wings passed through the walls as if they weren't there. Now bathed in the light, Catherine fled into the warehouse, followed quickly by Madeline pulling her still shocked husband with her. The door slammed shut behind them. There was something wrong with Eugene too. He lay motionless on the ground, his face was hideously disfigured, and his skin was coated with oozing liquid. She remembered seeing similar symptoms before, on Lucius and Grit Wilson after they had fallen afoul of Catherine and her equally mad husband in 1930.
OOC,Brook, please roll Sanity for seeing the monster. Sanity loss is 1D6/1D20, so you lose 1D6 even if you succeed and 1D20 if you fail. If you lose 5 or more Sanity, please roll Idea. If you succeed at the Idea roll, you will go temporarily insane. Otherwise, you may act freely. If you lose at least 14 Sanity, you will go indefinitely insane, regardless of whether or not you go temporarily insane, though you will still be able to act as long as you don't go temporarily insane. Also, please roll 3D6 to see how much damage the searchlight did.

Brook screamed at the sight of the horrid creature, and stumbled back, leaving the searchlight pointing at the warehouse. Her gaze fell to poor Eugene, and she started towards him, hesitantly at first, then faster, taking comfort in the fact the door to the warehouse is closed tight. She tried to remember if there was something she could do to help, even though her mind wasn't quite funtioning on any high level at the moment. "Eugene! I mean dad!"

The woman gaped in terror at the sight before her, then came to her senses and turned back to Brook. "You foolish girl!" she shouted back. "Get that light pointed back up in the air! Do you want Jerry's bombs to come down on our heads?!"

"It'll take both of us to move him, and that monstrous thing was scared away by the light! We just need to hurry and get him someplace safe!" Brook shouted and continued straight for Eugene at a sprint, trying to sound as authoritative as she possibly could, being a 16 year old girl.

The woman ran past Brook, back to the searchlight. As Brook reached Eugene, the light swept away and back up into the air.
