The drums of doom

Night is falling on Conajahara, the territory between the Black and Thunder Rivers. You have each come here for reasons of your own — the lure of gold, wanderlust, or the challenge of life at the edge of civilization — but for now you are serving as scouts out of Fort Tuscelan, sent out to roam the forests along the Black River, hunting game and investigating reports of bands of Picts sighted along the far shore.
The hunting is good in this area, but few civilized folk venture there, and even fewer return. It has been a long and tiring day, made all the more wearisome by the distant, ceaseless murmur of drums from within the dark western woods. To your northwest is Fort Tuscelan, a woefully understaffed Aquilonian outpost. Its purpose is to protect the settlers of the Westermarck — an Aquilonian colony located between the Black and Thunder Rivers — territory wrested from the clutches of the savage Picts who now lurk across the Black River, plotting their revenge.
Throughout the region are settlers who dwell here in defiance of the Picts, lone farmsteads and small crofts, and you have been charged to protect them and to look in on them while on your patrols. It is time now to begin the long journey back home, toward the relative safety of the Thunder River, but in the gathering gloom, as shadows deepen in the primal forest, the drums change their tempo, becoming more aggressive, louder, echoing from far beyond the Black River. Soon the staccato drum-beat is joined with howls, angry whoops and Pict war-songs, growing ever closer…

Servius peers off into the darkness toward the sounds of the Picts, taking out his crossbow and checking that it's loaded. "I hope they're not going to cross the Black River," he mutters. "I can't spend my loot if I'm dead."

Tuya also takes her bow and strings it. Then she takes the hood off her falcon and releases the bird into the air. “She’ll be safer up there if there’s any trouble and it sounds like there might be. But we can’t hold off a pack of Picts by ourselves, do you think we ought to retreat quickly?”

"Not a bad idea," says Servius. "Let's pack up the camp and head to the fort to warn them. After all, they can't pay us if the Picts catch them by surprise and wipe them out."

OOC: Mr: Handy, the 1 and 6 makes 2 damage killing the pict (he doesn't have any armour) and the 6 trigger the effect volley: meaning you can shoot again, with an extra 1d20 (so 3d20), and if you hit, you make an extra 1 damage.

Aine: you can shoot again (the bow has that advantage), and you can use the extra 1d20 of the momentum if you want.

You all see one of the naked picts fall to the ground, dead with the bolt, but his companions ignore him and continue.

Servius kill another pict who is hit in the chest.

OOC: 4 sucesses, means 3 momentum. No more actions.

Aine in this dark misses her shot; she was preparing to fire again, and she starts looking for any more arrows...
OOC: The 20 is a complication, so you can decide that you don't have any more arrows (and cannot fire more), OR you still have arrows, you can fire a last time and the GM gets two more doom dices. Your choice.

Servius grips his sword and shield and prepares to meet what's left of the Pictish horde. He doesn't like the odds of seven against three, but at least they aren't as bad as nine against three. "I don't get paid enough for this," he mutters.

One of the picts shout something to the others and attack alone Servius. He is much bigger than the others and have several feather in his hair and he is incredible fast, attacking first.
The others don't answer anything, but attack Tuya and Mouse, ignoring Servius.

I spend 1 doom dice, and transform one of the picts in a leader, who will figth Servius; then I spend another doom dice to give the pict leader the initiative .
The other 6 picts will divide themselves between Tuya and Mouse (3 for each).I resolve first the pict leader attack against Servius.

Re: The drums of doom

The pict leader has hit Servius with 1 success, but with the "20" the ax is broken; Servius can declare a reaction, roll corrdination and parry and with a single success he will avoid to be hit (but with the reaction action, I will get another doom dice). If Servius doesn't want to defend, he will get hit and we can get to the next phase.

Servius blocks the shaft of the axe with his Valusian longsword and is satisfied to see the axe head chopped off of it. Now that leader has no ready weapon, Servius is confident that he can finish him off, which should demoralize the rest of his men.

Servius with a single attack, cut the head of the leader, who started to fall with his eyes full of hate. Servius looked at his companions and and saw that things weren't going so well;
Tuya had hit one pict in the ribs, killing him, but somehow the knife was stuck. Mouse tried to imitate Servius, but the sword broke in the enemy neck (who died anyway, in a huge pool of blood).
Then the 4 surviving picts attacked Tuya and Mouse.

Tuya and Mouse are very well for now.

OOC: Tuya suffered a 1 and 5 (total damage: 2). No wounds
Mouse suffered 4 damage. If she suffers another point of damage she will reduce 1 point if vigor. When she looses all point of vigor, she will start suffering wounds. This game is very Pc friendly!

You can all attack now. You have 2 momentum dices. Tuya and Mouse are without weapons, so they cannot attack, but can try to find an improvise weapon (rolling awareness plus observation or spend the momentum dices to get it.

One recover 2 bolts and the other 2 arrows.
OOC: We are entering in a new scene, and you loose all momentum.

The path to Fort Tuscelan is clear. Unfortunately, even before you reach the fort, you hear the ululating cries from hundreds of savage throats on the river ahead. Creeping forward, you see bands of dozens of painted Pictish warriors passing by you in the forest, converging on the fort.
There, limned by flickering torchlight on the stockade walls, you see scores…swarms…hordes… hundreds…of Picts attacking the walls in fits and waves. Arrows arc over the walls into the fort, and valiant-but-outnumbered archers on the walls loose their shafts into the hordes outside. More painted savages arrive every minute.
No one living has ever dreamed of, let alone seen, such a gathering of Pictish tribes. This is unprecedented, even apocalyptic. The fort is lost and everyone inside is doomed.

The farmhouse is even worse: the hacked and mutilated bodies of a man, woman, and four children lie scattered throughout the little house’s four rooms. From the signs of it, Canaeus and his wife Iphisa fought valiantly, but were overcome. The children had apparently barricaded themselves into one small bedroom, but the door was hacked through and the children met grisly ends at the hands of the merciless Picts. Clothing, kitchenware, and other goods have been broken, torn, and strewn about the cabin’s ruined interior, all stained with spatters of blood and gore. Little is left of value here. A single shoe appears to be for a young girl that doesn’t jibe with the ages and sizes of any of the deceased children present. A captive, perhaps?

To Servius she says, “ You could see if they have anything useful we can take with us like food or arrows. I’ll be with you in a minute.” She walks around looking for a well or a bucket of water. Once she’s had a wash she pulls Servius aside and whispers,

The screams are very near and it's easy to get there. There is a group of 5 picts and a girl in her late teens, a settler’s daughter no doubt. Her hands are bound together tightly at the wrists, her feet tied so that she has about two feet of slack between them, and a rope is wound around her neck that one of the lesser Pict warriors holds like a leash. Her clothing is torn, one foot is bare, and she is muddy and bloody from dozens of minor scratches and bruises.

She kicks her horse back as the ape seems a fearsome beast and keeps her arrow trained on the ape.
“Everyone keep moving!” She shouts to the family.

“The Picts must have trained it!” Tuya squeaks and lets her arrow fly at the advancing ape.

The creature screams of fury and pain and his eyes are mad; it jumps in your direction, provoking the panic of the people nearby. Even your horses are afraid, but before they can run, the ape creature is already near you and attacks Tuya who hurt it more. It punches Tuya with a migthy blow, that hits Tuya leaving her badly hurt; she never fell so much pain as she feel her bones being smashed, but somehow she keeps her wits .

OOC: Ouch, the creature was very kucky. That is 8 points of damage. By the rules, Tuya suffered more than 5 points of damage in a single bow (meaning 1 wound) and reduced her vigor to 0 (another wound). You have now 3 wounds (you started with 5).
Remember that you have 2 momentum and 3 fortune points. The fortune poins can be use to (1 point each):
-recover the vigor
-have an automatic success to hit
-perform an extra action.
This is the near end of the game, spend it without concerns.
It is your turn now.

Another blow like that and Tuya will be meeting the Hunter in the Sky.
Feeling the adrenaline surging through her veins, she tries to ignore the pain and looses another arrow at the ape and kick her horse out reach.
Bow, 11 2d20: 4, 8 3d6: 3,4,5 Using one fortune point for vigor and one for another action ( moving out of the way)

Servius unsheathes his sword and strikes the ape a powerful blow.
OOC, If the ape is not dead yet after this, I'll use a fortune point to take another action so I can attack again.

Servius lands another accurate and devastating blow on the ape.
OOC, If that doesn't kill it, I'll spend another fortune point for a third attack.

Tuya hit the creature and then run to a safer distance; Servius attacked and with a deadly precision hit several blows with his sword. The creature turn to Servius and for a moment it looked as if the creature would attack him. But unstead, it closed it's eyes and fall like a dead tree. In that moment Servius and Tuya heard a terrible cry in a pictish voice from the woods.

"Let's hunt down that Pict," says Servius. "Anyone who can control such a beast is too dangerous to let escape."

“Er, okay. I’ll be right behind you.” Tuya climbs off her horse if the bushes look too thick to ride through.
“It almost seemed like the Pict let the ape die. She says as she follows Servius into the trees with an arrow notched ready.

The bolt hit true, and the pict fall to earth. Suddenly it seems for a moment that there is silence.
You hekpt severaç families to escape; you see others much behind being butchered, but you must resign that you cannot help everyone. After what seems a long time, you suddenly see an aquilonian patrol. They clash against a group of picts and help the colonists to go to the safety of the fort. You also enter and are finally safe.

OOC: The scenario is finished. I'l give you the rewards in a couple of days. Hope you enjoyed.

Are you interested to play another scenario?
I must be sincere: I hated this scenario.I love the story "Beyond the black river", it's one of my favourites, but this scenario didn't have a story, it was very linear and I didn't knew how to make it more interesting.
But what counts is that you had fun.

OOC, Yes, I'd like to play another scenario. This makes a good introduction to the world and the system, even if it is linear. I haven't read Howard's stories, but I'm somewhat familiar with the setting, having played several GURPS Conan solo scenarios, including one which features the Pictish attack on Fort Tuscelan.

I'll leave it up for now so it's visible for a while. I'll probably move it to the Hall of Fame this weekend. Or would you rather just create a new thread in this forum than create a new forum for the next game?

The name to the adventure will be different. I should have put a more generic name like "Adventures in Hyperborea" (it's what I will do to the next). Sorry for the trouble.
