In the chamber-
Alex looked into the generator room. The generator was humming smoothly, and wires ran from it into the floor. There was no other exit from the generator room.

"Here goes nothing," said Beth, unsealing and opening the large hatch. She took a look at its underside. "Hmm. There's no way to lock it from below, only from above. That's not good. We could get trapped down there."

Robert pushed the button to summon the elevator, and it rose up until it was flush with the ground. There was barely enough room for all of them to stand on it.

In the fallout shelter-
The skinheads and their companions, willing or unwilling, proceeded up another flight of stairs.

Thomas keeps going.

Alex comes back to the elevator.
"How about we go down in two lots so not to overload it. We'll just have to hope no one locks it; we can't bust the lock I don't think. Bud can you bring down the second group? I'll send the elevator up once we've checked the bottom is safe. Now, who's coming with me?"
