IC-Highway to Hell(Randall/David/Tisha/Willie/Felice)

Z-Day - 8:58 AM Mountain Daylight Time - On I-80 West
On the highway-
Tisha drove the news van west from the T-Bone on I-80. Willie sat beside her in the middle of the van's front seat, and Randall occupied the shotgun seat. Behind the van, David drove his big rig down the road. I-80 was a two-lane highway running across flat land. There were no guardrails here, nor was there a median divider separating the westbound lanes from the two eastbound lanes to their left. There were a couple of small towns, Potter and Dix, in this direction, but the nearest big town was Kimball, several miles away. The interstate led directly across the Wyoming border and into Cheyenne, the nearest big city, some forty miles away. F. E. Warren Air Force Base was situated just west of Cheyenne, its front gates accessible from the city.

Randall glanced over at Willie. "Now's probably a good time to teach me how to be a sound man," he said.

David could see clearly down the road. He was about two miles east of Potter now, and everything was smooth so far.

Randall nodded and made sure his door was locked while Willie instructed him in the finer points of holding a microphone. The vehicles moved down the highway another mile or so.
Tisha,The buildings of Potter came into view in the distance ahead, to the north of the highway. At the turnoff, she could see two figures on the ground, one of them on top of the other, but she couldn't make out the details.
David,Potter was now about a mile away, the buildings becoming a little clearer. At the turnoff just south of the small town, he could see a girl, but he thought twice about picking her up under the circumstances as he got closer. There was a man lying on his back on the highway's shoulder, and she was straddling him and eating his face. Literally eating his face. She may have been pretty once, but one of her eyes was gone, blood oozing from the empty socket.
David, please roll Sanity. Spoiler:
He obviously wast shook by the blood. He didn´t intelligably grasp what was going on and is eager to help. That can change as he gets closer to the situation. In this case he sees what he wants to see.

On the highway-
Tisha slowed down the news van as she approached the turnoff to the right to Potter. David also reduced speed behind her, bringing his truck to a halt just before it. On the shoulder, she and the others with her could clearly see a man lying on his back with a woman straddling him. The man was motionless, and the woman was chewing on his nose. Then she suddenly stopped, stood up, and turned toward the vehicles. One of her eyes was gone, blood oozing from the empty socket. The other was an angry red. A moan escaped her lips. Then the man sat up, his eyes opening. They were red as well.

Tisha lets out several curses as she sees the scene in front of her.

"Are you fu*king getting this, Willie? My God, she's eating him!"

Now, Tisha was an ambitious journalist who desperately wanted her big break, but she also wanted to be alive to enjoy her big break. She'll try and drive away from the pair before they get close. Hopefully Willie gets enough time to get some footage, but she's not going to risk letting these things get close when she has no weapon to speak of.

If only I had brought my gun. Damn it. Well, this makes getting to the army base all the more important.

On the highway-
Willie, while he had seen all sorts of horrible things in his long career, was nonetheless shocked - though he still had the presence of mind to take his camera and start filming the two people by the side of the road. "I'm getting it, Tish," he said.

Randall was even more stunned. "I'm getting it, Tish," he echoed.

Tisha drove past the two as the man on the shoulder stood up. He and the woman lurched after the news van, but they were safely past. Then David followed in his truck, also getting past them before they could reach his vehicle. Looking in the side mirrors, they could see that the couple were following them. The woman was running at a rather high rate of speed, but the man staggered at a more sedate pace. Both of them fell back as the vehicles gained speed and were soon lost to sight. The vehicles crossed the invisible line between Cheyenne County and Kimball County.

"Relax, Tish, I've seen this before," said Willie. "Happens all the time in combat zones. Usually to green folks who haven't seen the elephant yet, but sometimes even hardened guys go a little nuts. It's post-traumatic stress, but this kind is rather mild. All he does is repeat other people's words. I think he'll snap out of it in a few minutes."

"Relax, Tish, I've-" started Randall, but then he shook his head. "Geez, man! She was eating him!"

"Yeah, it happens. Seen it myself once in Southeast Asia. You want to continue that lesson on how to hold a mike? Might help get your mind off...things."

Randall gulped and nodded, and Willie went back into instructor mode. Neither of them were paying much attention to the road ahead, and Tisha wasn't either. Tears welled up in her eyes unbidden, blurring her vision so that she couldn't see. It thus came as a tremendous shock to her when her vision cleared and the Greyhound bus suddenly loomed up in front of her a short distance past the turnoff to Dix. The bus was on its side, having rolled over. It had been traveling eastward on the other side of the highway, but it was slewed across both of the eastbound lanes and one and a half westbound lanes - the ones they were in right now. It might have been possible to squeeze past it by straddling the shoulder, but a few people were staggering and crawling around on that stretch of road. More were climbing out of the bus's shattered windows. They had various horrifying injuries, apparently from the crash, which appeared to have occurred recently. It was a wonder that they were all still moving.

Tisha does not buy Willie's explanation. For one thing, they were not in a warzone. And the man who had been eating had gotten up and seemed to have been chasing them. Tisha did not believe in zombies, though she had heard a few jokes over the last couple of hours that this was what that was. (The jokes had gradually grown more serious.) But she did know that something was very wrong here. Her current suspicion was on some sort of virus.

When she sees the overturned bus it comes as a shock, but she struggles to keep cool, and mostly succeeds.

"Nobody move. These people may be like the ones we saw back a ways. They could be infected with something or in a state of shock. Either way, we don't want to get near them."

She attempts to keep moving past them, but she's only an average driver at best and her nerves seem to get the better of her.

On the highway-
The overturned Greyhound just came up too fast, and there was no time to avoid it. Tisha slammed on the brakes and jerked the wheel. "Look out!" screamed Willie, trying to grab the wheel himself, but he was too slow. Randall, who was a good driver, was all the way over in the shotgun seat and unable to reach the wheel. All he could do was watch in horror as the van skidded and slammed sideways into the front of the bus with a sickening crunch, now fully blocking the highway. As if that wasn't bad enough, David's truck was right behind them. With the van in front of him, he hadn't seen the bus until it was too late. He pressed down on the brakes, frozen in terror. The huge eighteen-wheeler plowed into the other side of the van, sandwiching it with a screech of metal being twisted in a way no vehicle was meant to endure outside of a demolition derby. Fortunately, unlike in a Michael Bay movie, there was no explosion. However, Tisha and her passengers were now very badly injured and trapped in the van, as the doors would not open due to the vehicles on either side. The windshield was shattered, however, so it might still be possible to escape once they unbuckled their seatbelts, which had very likely saved their lives.

Over at the bus, the three shambling figures on the shoulder turned and began to lumber toward the wrecked van. More were clambering out of the windows on the side of the bus that now faced the sky, crawling over the bus toward the van and plunging to the highway below.

Oh hell. I am not going to die here in the middle of the highway. Not like this.

Unhooking her belt, she looks back at Randall and Willie, relieved to see they're both awake. Willie because she genuinely liked the older man, and Randall because if it came to it, he'd provide a distraction.

No, not gonna think like that.

On the highway-
Randall and Tisha scrambled through the shattered windshield, which like modern windshields had broken into countless glass pebbles upon impact rather than into dangerous shards as older ones did. They made it out very quickly, spurred on by adrenaline. Randall was even able to bring his baseball bat with him. Willie nearly made it out on his own, but his severe injuries slowed him down, and he remained half in and half out until Randall and Tisha teamed up to pull him the rest of the way, and just in time. The first three of the apparently infected people shambled up to the van, with another some distance behind them and four more emerging from the wrecked bus.

"The truck doesn't look too badly damaged," said Randall quickly. "That's our only way out of here!" He scrambled over to the truck and tried the door on the passenger side of the cab, but it was locked. "Hey!" he shouted to David. "Let us in!" Yet David did not react, still frozen in fear.

Tisha feels a tinge of guilt when Randall goes down, but quickly suppresses it.

She looks to Willie, the one of them more likely of them to do something rash. "Don't even think about it, Willie. Neither of us are armed. But now's our chance; let's get into the truck!"

She steps forward and tries to gauge if she'll be able to avoid the zombies and crawl through the window. Hopefully they'd all be distracted with Randall and there would be enough space to slip through.

Willie and Tisha ran back for the truck's passenger side door. Willie reached through where the window used to be, unlocked the door, and threw it open. "Get in!" he screamed. Tisha scrambled into the cab, followed quickly by Willie. "Get us out of here!" he shouted to David, who finally came to his senses to realize that he had picked up a beautiful woman after all, though not in the way he had expected.

Randall swung his baseball bat wildly and howled in agony as the man who had seized him tackled him to the ground and crushed him, cracking his ribs. The other two regained their feet.

On the highway-
David expertly switched into reverse and pulled the truck back away from the cannibals, soon getting out of their potential reach. Their interest was entirely consumed by Randall, however.

"Wait!" screamed Randall in desperation. "Don't leave me!" With a surge of adrenaline, he broke free of the grip of the man who had grabbed him and threw him backwards. Unfortunately, one of the other two began to chew on his right arm. The other tried to gnaw on his right leg, but he managed to roll out of the way somehow.

Willie shuddered and opened the glove compartment. "Poor kid..." he said. "At least I made sure you survived, Tisha." Inside the glove compartment, in addition to the bottle of Jack Daniels, there was also a first aid kit that he removed. "Ah, just what we needed!" Both he and Tisha were badly hurt from the double crash, and they were bleeding on the upholstery.

"Damn shame," Tisha says, looking away. She'd never admit it, but that look of desperation in Randall's eyes was going to haunt her for a very long time to come. It was better to look away. If she didn't see it, maybe he would survive. Or she could tell herself that anyway. "Even worse, we don't have any good footage." She checks to see if she still has her cell. Maybe she could record herself for a minute or too and have something to upload later. "But thanks for that, Willie. Knew there was a reason I kept you around." Joke aside, she was glad her cameraman had survived. He was like family to her.

She smiles at their driver, but inwardly groans. Just great. She'd be being leered at the whole way by this creep. But there weren't any better options at this moment.

"Thanks for your help back there." What little it was.I'm Tisha, this is Willie. You may have seen us around. Channel 5 at 5? We were on the way to the air force base to find out what we could about all this when this all happened. I'm good friends with the commander, and think I can get some answers. More importantly, I think the world around us has gone crazy and that would be the safest place to hold up for a bit."

Taking the first aid kit, she sets to work attempting to treat her injury. She also takes a swig of the Jack Daniels, though not too much. She wanted to be able to focus on her interview later.

David turns the truck at first safe opportunity and looks for a turnoff to get them around the wreckage on the highway. The plan is to take the smaller roads to WAFB and the intended goal of his run, in close vicinity to the base.

On the highway-
Tisha was able to treat some of her bruises very effectively. She felt much better, and none of her injuries would show up on camera. Her cell phone didn't have a signal, but she was still able to get some video. Remarkably, Randall scrambled to his feet and somehow eluded all three of his pursuers, who lumbered after him slowly. He bolted for the truck as David made a three point turn. "Wait!" he cried.

Willie borrowed some of the first aid supplies, but in his weakened state he wasn't able to help himself much.

David now had the truck facing east. If he waited for a few seconds, Randall could catch up and climb into the cab, though it would be a tight squeeze. Still, there was a sleeper compartment in the back of the cab that could fit him, and from the looks of him he needed to lie down anyway. The last turnoff he had seen was a few miles back at Potter. He knew that he'd be able to either turn left and get onto Route 30 just south of Potter, which ran parallel to I-80 and would pass through Dix and Kimball, or he could turn right and hope to find some other way west.
OOC,Randall's DEX x 5 roll (65% stat) to get away from the zombies before they attack: [dice]0[/dice] Willie's First Aid roll (30% base skill) treating his more severe injury: [dice]1[/dice] Since that's a critical success on the First Aid roll, I'll say that it automatically heals the maximum of 3 HP for that injury without having to roll. Tisha, you may also make another First Aid roll to try to treat your other injury or one of Willie's, again healing 1D3 HP if you succeed.

"There´s a man with chutzpah! He refuses to lie down. Let´s raise the odds for him to join us. HOLD ON!" Unbelieavably, he puts the truck in reverse once again to close the gap to Randall.
Now, if Randall could get in they could all take the road right and hope for a westbound back road.

"Thanks, Tisha," said Willie, who promptly returned the favor.

Almost out of breath, Randall raced around the front of the truck, threw open the passenger side door of the cab, and squeezed inside, slamming it behind him. "Go!" he cried, leaning back and closing his eyes. "It burns like hell! I need a doctor..."

The three cannibals that had attacked him stumbled alongside the truck, heading for the cab. A fourth one had just rounded the van, and there were several more who had emerged from the bus some distance behind it.
OOC,Willie's First Aid roll (30% base skill) treating Tisha's second injury: [dice]0[/dice] HP restored to Tisha: [dice]1[/dice] Both of Tisha's injuries have been treated, but Willie still has one untreated injury and Randall has four. "Try and stay calm," Tisha instructed. She was glad Randall had survived, both for her own conscience as well as the fact he could give a hell of a story. But part of her was worried as well. She had not watched many zombie movies, but she seemed to recall their victims tended to come back as zombies when they died. Would something like that happen here? That man she had seen the woman eating just a few minutes ago had seemed to become one of them. Was that how it was spread?

No, she was a reporter, and reporters operated based on facts. Randall could still talk and was looking at her with less of a hungry look then David was. She'd do what she could to help him until the army got a look at him.

If possible, she leans forward and tries to help ease his wounds.

On the highway-
David pulled away. Their pursuers continued to lumber after the truck, but they were far too slow to keep up with it. They dropped back and soon disappeared into the distance. David drove on and was soon a mile away from the crash. It was another two miles to Potter and the turnoff.

Randall tied a tourniquet around his arm with consummate skill, and he and Willie treated his injuries from the collisions. "My parents wanted me to be a doctor," he said, "but I changed majors and went pre-law instead. I know enough to patch myself up a little, but I could use a real doctor. I think I've got a fever."

"Yeah..." said Randall. "I'm not about to start eating people, but I don't feel so good...I think that bite infected me..."

From the way David looked at Tisha, she was sure he wouldn't mind if she tied him up too.

David progressed another mile, and was now only a mile away from the Potter exit. As he looked ahead, he could clearly see the woman who had been eating the man running in his direction. She must have run nearly a mile since he had first passed her! The man was visible too in the distance, as well, still coming their way, albeit slower. And even further in the distance, over two miles ahead, he could see a red Porsche 911 coming westward as well, toward him. There hadn't been any westward traffic earlier. He couldn't help admiring those wheels - and the beautiful woman driving. She was going extremely fast, apparently not realizing she was heading directly into danger.

"I hope I can make it to the base," said Randall. "I'm sure there will be doctors there, but will they even let me in? Maybe there's one closer. What about those scientists back at the T-Bone? Maybe they could help."

David steered his truck around the woman, who turned around after the truck passed and continued to chase after it, though with no hope of actually catching it. He likewise bypassed the man she had been eating. As they got close to the off ramp at Potter, everyone could see the red sports car approaching it from the east. "Relax, I know this region like the back of my hand," said Willie. "I can get us through to the base and avoid the cities and major roads. The sun's to our left, and it's morning, so that way's east. If we turn right here, we'll be heading west, with the sun at our back."

Felice had no choice but to stop behind the truck, as the road was not wide enough for her to pass it. She was totally lost, and she'd have no choice but to keep following it and hope the trucker knew where he was going. While she was stopped, she got out of the car and rummaged through her bags.

David took the hairpin curve with obvious expertise and continued heading west. Felice had no problem navigating the curve, considering that her sports car was much smaller and more maneuverable than a big rig, and she continued to follow.

Tisha looked past Willie at Randall, who was sweating a lot and looked to be in obvious pain, but he was still hanging in there.

David followed directions, and before long a crossroads loomed ahead. "Good," said Willie. "We should be a mile or so south of Dix. That road to the right goes that way, but we want to go straight, which heads west."

Staggering toward the intersection down the right to the right was a man with a sucking chest wound who should not have still been able to walk, let alone stand.

"No way," The reporter replied. "Think about it for a second, Willie. You've covered wars, you know? I'm sure you've been places where civilization appeared to completely collapse. Or even look at history, the black plague, the aftermath of world war one and the flu epidemic... I'm sure people back then felt the world was ending. But we always rebound. I think it's the same here. This is some really weird disease, but someone will get to the bottom of it. Whatever this is came on fast, but once people adapt and have a chance to recover we'll be able to fix things. It's why it's so important we get to the base, give them a firsthand account of what things are right and learn more for ourselves.

"No, keep going," said Willie. "Take the next right."
Tisha,Tisha could sense that Willie wanted to believe her, but he still had some doubts about whether she was right that things would get better. It would take more convincing to reassure him.
Tisha, you may roll Fast Talk or Persuade. The base skill for Persuade is 15%, however, its effect will be permanent. "Yeah, we'll be fine once we get to the base," said Willie, smiling for the first time since this started. "I'll make sure we get there." Ring of Fire played from the CD. The vehicles turned right and continued on a slightly wider road.

"It sure does burn," moaned Randall. "Oh, God, it hurts. It's getting worse. I hope we get there soon."

"We're most of the way there now," said Willie. "We need to stay on this road for a while longer, until we reach 85, south of Cheyenne. We'll have to detour around the city as best we can, but it's still going to be tricky."

They reached an intersection with a paved road to the right and a dirt road to the left.

Tisha watches Randall warily, fears playing through her head. Hopefully he was at least wearing a seatbelt. But she still did not fancy being in the same car as him if he turned.

"Hey David. Can you hand me that gun you say you have? If we're approaching the city, I want to have some means of defense if we spot one of those things too late, and I'm a decent shot." Of course, she's really wanting it just in case the worst happens to Randall. Judging by the wounds some of them had she's not sure these things can even be killed, but she'd feel better having some sort of weapon.

Ghost Riders in the Sky played next.

"Thanks," muttered Randall, swallowing the pill dry. "It probably won't help. I think I've already had the maximum effective dosage. But what else can I do?" He closed his eyes and listened to the music. "Red eyed cows, huh? That sounds eerily familiar. I hope they don't try to get their revenge for all those burgers I've scarfed down. If animals can get infected like people do, that's even worse."

David kept driving straight ahead, and Felice followed. They passed a dirt road to the right, and the road they were on made a slight right first and then rounded a curve in the same direction. Soon they reached another intersection with a dirt road going right, a narrow paved road going straight ahead, and the current road curving around to the left. "Turn left here," said Willie. "That'll keep us on track. I think we'll hit 85 in fifteen or twenty minutes."

Tisha frowns. The idea of this spreading to animals was terrifying. She thinks back to the images she saw of those "riots" earlier. Were there any animals that seemed to be infected? It would make sense that if humans got it they might pass it onto their pets, at least.

Tisha didn't remember seeing any animals on the TV news, whether healthy or infected. The TV had shown urban scenes with people. This left the question open, and extremely disturbing.

On the back roads-
David shut off the music.

"I know he didn't really know this was going to happen," said Willie. "It's just uncanny, that's all. How long it takes is going to depend on which route we take. It's safer if we go the long way around, but it'll take longer too. If we want to hurry, we can turn right at the next intersection. That'll take us up to road south of the river, parallel to I-80 but further away from it. We could cut through Cheyenne's southern suburbs that way. We'd be at the outskirts of Cheyenne in about twenty minutes, and it would take us another twenty or so to bypass the city to the south and reach Warren's gates. That's barring delays, of course. You never know when you're gonna run into the odd overturned bus blocking the road. If we go straight ahead, we'll be at Route 85 several miles south of Cheyenne in less than fifteen minutes. We could take 85 north from there and cut through the suburbs further south. That route would take about 45 minutes from here all told. Or we could go west from 85 on Route 223, skipping most of the suburbs. It's safer, but it may be nearly an hour before we reach the base. We'd better decide fast, that intersection's coming up."

Up ahead, the road curved around to the right, while another, narrower road continued straight ahead.

Tisha's first response is to pick the fastest route, but she forces herself to think through their options.

It does us no good to put ourselfs into unnecessary danger, especially for a 15 minute shortcut. If a lot of those things are out there we could be swarmed, and David's already panicked once. We also need to think about Randall, though frankly I'm not optimistic much can be done for him. If the army had a cure they'd be deploying it already, surely. Truth be told, I'm more worried about him turning while we're in here. Hopefully if it comes to it I'll be able to convince him to think of the rest of us and get out before he turns.

The beautiful reporter nodded, her internal monologue complete.

"I think we should go west from 85 and skip the suburbs. Sounds like the safest route, and I think we need to avoid large concentrations of people, even if it does take a little longer to reach the base. If this virus has become widespread and there's a crowd of those zombies we'd be in serious trouble."

"I agree," said David, heading straight through the intersection and continuing to the west.

"It's not completely safe," said Willie, "just safer. We'll still have to cut through the southern edge of the suburbs, unless we wanted to head south on Route 85 and take a very long way around through Colorado, but I don't think that's really worth it. Hell, it's probably more dangerous that way, and we'd have to pass through one small town or another. The real danger's going to be coming up I-25 behind Cheyenne and then briefly onto I-80, but there's no avoiding that."

"I understand Randall. But we've already been in one accident. Another one could be fatal. Just keep us informed as to your state. Look, I'll be honest with you. I don't know if the base will even let you in. I'm hoping they'll want the opportunity to study someone who has been bitten by one of these things and treat it, but they may view it as too great a risk. I know the officer in charge of the base and will try to appeal to him, but I want you to be aware that he may say no."

And now here came the tough part. Tish worked hard to get emotional. It was not entirely fake, the guilt she was feeling, but she needed to sell this to him. "If you reach a point where you don't think you'll make it, we'll all be in danger. I hate to ask this of you, but if that happens, please tell us so we can pull over and let you out. Don't misunderstand; I want you to fight the hardest you can to beat this until we can get you some help. But you've been saying it's been getting worse, and if it continues to do so, we need to think about everyone and the risk it poses.

"I'm really sorry for asking this of you. I don't know if you know who I am
(the admission stung, but she needed to say it) "but I'm a reporter. I swear if you don't make it out of this I'll make damn sure your story gets out. The world will know how heroic you were, and the sacrifices you made to save the rest of us."

She can't help smiling when he praises her; she had always been sensitive to her role as a reporter in a low population state and so was desperate for some recognition. "I appreciate that. And sure, we can start now if you like. First, why don't you tell me your last name..."

Hell, I'm not even sure I would. If the worst happens, and you don't make it, I'm damn sure going to make sure you're one of the heroes this day immortalizes."

She takes out her phone again and starts another recording, switching flawlessly back into her reporter voice. "This is Tisha Roberts. We are still en route to Warren Airforce Base. But right now I want to turn my attention to Randall Larson. Mr. Larson was helping with our newscasts sound earlier today when we had our accident, and unfortunately he was bitten by one of the infected. We're hopeful that the base will be able to stabilize his condition, which I'm sorry to say has gotten worse. But no matter what happens, I wanted to take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on one of today's heroes. Mr. Larson saved my cameraman and I and helped us get into another vehicle after our crash by breaking out one of the windows. Sadly, it was this very bravery that led to him being bitten. " She blinks back tears, determined to remain professional, before turning the phone to Randall. "But he remains conscious, and has agreed to a brief interview in order to help others should the infection take him.

"Mr. Larson, thank you for this. I'd like to ask you to describe the feelings after you were bitten. You mentioned a burning, I believe? Have you ever felt anything like that before, or was this... sickness, I guess we could call it, entirely new?"

Tisha felt for Randall, though the self centered reporter also felt this would be ratings gold. She manages to convince herself that this sort of story would be important to document, and it fell on her to do it. She makes sure she gets a nice shot of the tears.

"There you are, America. A hero in action. I have no doubt there have been many already created by this day's actions, and no doubt there will be many more to come. But Randall Larson is a rare breed. If he does not make it- if none of us make it- remember his name." She ends the video and shuts off her phone, preserving the power. Hopefully once she gets to the base she could charge it up. Having a living recording of this crisis was important.

"You did wonderfully, Randall," Tisha offers in a warmer tone than her professional reporter voice had been. "I've known you for so little time, but I am confident that your parents would be proud of you. You saved Willie's and my life. May have saved David too, given how he froze up back there. No offense," she tells their driver.

"Given what I've seen of this rioting, I think it would have been this bad all over. And if you were a doctor, chances are you'd have been right in the path of these zombies anyway. But you've done a great service with that interview. Even if you... don't make it, I can show this to the military. "The odd thing is how little traffic we've seen. I'd have expected more people fleeing for...somewhere, given all the chaos. Maybe everyone who's still alive decided to bunker down in their homes. Not a bad plan, all things considered. But I like our chances with the military a lot better. They have all the guns."

"Yeah, the silos would have been targeted too," said Willie. "They'd want to hit our birds before we could launch them. At least that's one thing we don't have to worry about. I was in Bosnia, back in the nineties, reporting on the war there. It was pretty hairy, and there was some cannibalism too. Starving people didn't have much choice but to eat the dead sometimes. It feels different when the war zone's in your own backyard, though." He checked the maps. "We should be at 85 in a couple more minutes."

On the back roads-
When they were approaching Route 85, Tisha could see two cars in the intersection that had apparently collided. It would still be possible to drive around them and get on the road heading north, but it wouldn't be easy. Complicating matters further were the people outside the vehicles. A woman had been trying to crawl away from the wrecks, but a man, another woman, and a teenage boy were on top of her, grabbing and eating her.
OOC,The worst one to fail was the one where you came across the overturned Greyhound bus, but of course that was a worse failure and thus a worse result. We've got two cars that have collided, and more of those things eating a woman. Best not to look too close; it's too late for her, and maybe they'll be too distracted to pay us much attention. Think you can maneuver us around the wrecks?"

"Turn right at the intersection," said Willie. "We'll want to take the first left from there. It shouldn't be long."

Just as the truck arrived at the intersection, the infected stopped eating the dead woman, who rose to her feet. All four of them swarmed the truck as it made the turn, and it clipped one of them. Felice expertly steered the Porsche around the bend and the infected both.

The truck began to skid as it headed north on Route 85 across some railroad tracks, and David struggled to correct it. The truck swerved from side to side down the highway. It took him a while, but he finally got the truck under control.

Tisha screams, not so much in fear of the truck getting into an accident(although that was very much a motivator; she had been involved in one pile up today and had no desire for another) but because of what another accident would mean. They'd be sitting ducks, with the dead rapidly approaching; chances would be good they'll all be injured as well. Some of them may lose consciousness, which might be a blessing. But the unlucky ones would still be conscious, too injured too move as the zombies swarmed them and consumed them.

But after a long moment of terror the worst is averted, as David regains control of his truck. Tisha could kiss him. Instead she just leans back in the seat and attempts to steady her breathing, for once at a lose for words.

"Actually, the hard part will be when we have to take I-25 north and then I-80 west, to the west of Cheyenne," said Willie. "It's not for very long, but - look out!"

David swerved at the last second, barely missing a red-eyed man who was walking in the middle of the road, heading toward the highway. Behind him, Felice expertly avoided a collision.

He looked at the address on the paper and compared it to the map. "Yeah, this address is on the northern edge of Cheyenne. I'm sure I could find it, but we're not in a very good position for that. We're south of Cheyenne, and there's a whole city that's probably full of infected people between us and there. We'll reach the rear gates of the base first as we go around the west side of the city. David's inquiry appeals to her natural curiosity, however. "That where you're dropping your load off, Dave? I'll say this, you sure are dedicated." She laughs. "Feels like the end of the f*cking world and you're still hellbent on fulfilling your job. But as a reporter, I sympathize."

David and Felice slowed down and tried to weave in and out between the red-eyed fiends, but they were just too tightly packed. David began to fishtail very badly, striking more of them and causing him to completely lose control of the truck. Ultimately, it rolled over onto its right side. Randall was miraculously not too badly hurt. Tisha got the worst of it, not wearing a seatbelt, but David and Willie were hurt somewhat badly in the collision too. Fortunately, all of them stayed conscious. Through the windshield, they could see the horde start to converge on the overturned tractor-trailer.

Behind them, Felice had also struck one of the hungry people. Her car's usually excellent handling failed her, and it rolled over on its side almost immediately. She screamed in terror as a couple members of the mob, including the one she had hit, began to close in on her as well.

David takes a second to weigh their options. One: they could try to get to the trailer and barricade themselves. They have food in there. Two: they could try to out-run the mob. Heading north and picking off some infected people should be the way to go. If they need to come back for supplies later, they could.

"We´re legging it northbound, guys. Tish. You pop the bastards if they get to close. I´ll bullwhack them and draw attention from ya´ll." He pushes the lopsided door open and unclutches his seat belt. What to bring outside? A large spanner from the back of the seat might do. Better than bare fists. The plan is to hoist the others up on the side of the cabin and then slide down, aiming to get north on I-25.

On the highway-
David hauled himself out of the driver's side door and onto the left side of the truck's cab, which was now on top. From his vantage point, he could see that most of the infected were coming from the north, the direction of Cheyenne. One of them was actually running very fast and pulled ahead of the others, reaching the front of the truck and heading right for the windshield! Two others were a short distance behind it, and others were closing in from behind. The only ones behind him were the ones he had passed or run over. There was a mostly clear path back to the on ramp they had used to get on the highway, which was not too far away. Also in that direction was Felice's car, which was even nearer to the ramp. She struggled to unbuckle her seatbelt and climb out as David had done, but she couldn't manage it. She screamed in terror as two more infected began to close in on her, one from the front and another from the rear.

Below, in the truck, Tisha was now on top. Willie and Randall were crushed beneath her.

On the highway-
As the fast one smashed through the windshield, David hauled Tisha up through the driver's door at the top with astounding ease and placed her next to him, out of harm's way - for now. Willie and Randall hastily tried to extricate themselves from their seatbelts so they could also climb out, but the red-eyed fiend attacked Randall first. He could not avoid the attack in the tight confines of the cab, and it chewed off his ear! He screamed in agony, yet somehow he was still alive and conscious. Then the two slower ones reached the front of the cab, and there were more closing in behind them.

Felice unbuckled her belt and quickly hauled herself through the door and onto the driver's side, which was now on top, drawing her pistol in one fluid motion. Tisha looks at David with obvious gratitude. "Thanks, you just saved my life!" She decides if she does survive this she'd most likely sleep with him. She was at the point now where she'd hardly regret it.

But they were still in an incredibly dangerous situation, and she knew she needed to do something. For now, her only goal was getting Willie to safety. She leaned down and spoke to her cameraman. "C'mon Willie! You have to hurry!" She reaches down to support him if he needs it. As for Randall, it was far too late for him-- but her instincts had told her he wasn't going to make it to the base anyway. All they could do now is use the distraction he had provided for them and hope it was a quick death.

On the highway-
"Any time, babe," said David with a wide grin. He bent down to help Tisha pull Willie out of the truck as the cameraman scampered up, not needing their aid after all, fear and adrenaline spurring him out of harm's way. Randall was not so lucky. After the fast one did its Mike Tyson impression on him, the two slower ones followed it into the cab and began to feast, one of them ripping open the poor man's stomach with its teeth so that his entrails spilled loose. With one final scream, Randall fell unconscious at last and began to bleed out onto the passenger side window, now flat against the asphalt. Two more of the infected arrived at the front of the truck, with another three coming from the north.

Realizing that she was outnumbered and not high enough to evade their grasp as those on the truck were, Felice slid down the hood of her car, relying on her speed to make a break for the truck. However, she was not fast enough. While one of the two infected after her tripped over itself and fell flat on its face, the other intercepted her and grasped for her. Fortunately, she managed to elude it and sprinted for the fallen truck, still gripping her gun. "Help!" she shrieked.

"Nice of you to join us, Willie." Tisha jokes, but it's clear from the relief on her face that she'd very glad her cameraman made it up here. The screams down there made it very clear that Randall would not be joining them-- and this made getting her video to the military more important. The world needed to know how brave he was.

Seeing Felice come towards them and narrowly escape death, she frowns. She's no fan of the other woman and still does not quite trust her, but no one deserves that fate. If she can do it without putting herself at risk, she reaches down and tries to help her climb up.

"Thanks," said Willie, running with Tisha and David to the rear of the truck, dashing across the side of the trailer that was now on top. Behind them, they could hear the horrible chewing sounds from the cab.

"We have to get back to the on-ramp and get off this highway!" Willie added. "There's more of them in front of us than behind us, and there will be still more coming from Cheyenne, which is the way we were going. If we get off the highway, we can follow it from below. There's no roads down there, but now that we're on foot, we don't need to stay on the roads. At least we're not terribly far from the base at this point. We can make it on foot. We just have to do something about those two in our way."

"Give me my gun, darling, and I'll keep them off her back," said David to Tisha. "You two can pull her up when she gets here."

Behind the truck, Felice sprinted across the open ground, the two infected slowly pursuing her. The one that had fallen had now regained its feet, but it was a distance behind the others. She hadn't quite reached the rear of the truck yet, but she would soon.

Tisha's going to say something, but the last shrill desperate scream of Randall hits her at that moment, and she finds words flee her. She couldn't help but suspect she had been responsible for his death. She had recruited him to join them on this assignment-- maybe if she hadn't he'd still be safe back at the truck stop. Or maybe she could have done more for him now, rather than already having given up on him. It's all she can do to avoid breaking down and sobbing

But she forces down her guilt and retains control, and hands the gun over to David, before considering Willie's plan.

'I guess it makes sense. I wish we could find another car in working condition. If these things attack us on foot, we'll have no protection. But you know this area better than any of us, Willie. If you think we can make it on foot, I guess we'll have to try. I sure didn't come this far to die now." She nods to herself as if lost in thought and appears resolute, before reaching down to help Felice up.
Mr.Handy,Happy holidays to you if you celebrate. Thanks for running this game and all the hard work you put into it, it's probably my favorite one I'm in now, and I don't even like zombies. Here's hoping all my characters survive until the next year and beyond. ;)

OOC,Yes, you just barely avoided going indefinitely insane. I've timestamped every Sanity loss so I can tell at a glance, which is something I should have done the first time I ran this. Of course, if you lose 1 more Sanity by 11:28, you will go indefinitely insane. Fortunately, you've already lost the maximum from encountering zombies and for people dying, so you can't lose any more for those particular reasons for a while.
Silver Priest,Thank you, and to you as well. You're welcome, and I'm glad you're enjoying the game. It's as much fun to run it as it is to play, though it is a lot of work. Good luck keeping your characters alive. You're going to need it! ;)

David gripped the pistol in both hands and fired at the man in front who was stumbling after Felice, but his shot went wide. Out of breath, she finally reached the truck. He fired again to cover her, but once more he missed. She slipped her gun into her purse and scrambled up the rear of the truck, not even needing Tisha and Willie's help. She exhaled with relief as she reached the top and stood next to them. David fired again, this time barely striking the man's shoulder. He didn't even flinch when the bullet hit him and just kept on walking forward. He would reach the back of the truck soon, and the other infected man was not far behind him.

Tisha bites her tongue to keep from snapping at David and his lousy aiming. "We only have so much ammo. Try to make those shots count.

She makes room for Felice, glad she made it. "At least we're safe up here, for the moment. But the question is how we get down. We'll need to deal with those two, and I also noticed one of them who was moving extremely fast; I don't want to risk going on foot without putting him down. Finally, it sounds like Randall's dead. If this is like the other ones we saw, he won't remain so for long. And once he gets back up the ones eating him right now will lose interest. Right now, I think we need to try and kill every one around us now and hope we have enough ammo for it-- that should at least clear a path for us to get off this highway safely before any other are attracted by the noise. We can figure out our next move from there."

She awaits the others response.

Of course, Tisha was also worried after seeing these things that maybe there was no way to put them down for good. In which case, things were dire. But she knew better than to say this out loud. If they were going to survive this they needed to believe they still had a chance.

On the highway-
"I'm tryin', babe," said David.

"Grazie," said Felice, gasping for breath as she fished her gun out of her purse. "Those men chase me, almost get me!"

"Hard to blame 'em," said David, lining up his next shot. "You are smoking hot."

"Grazie...I think."

"We gotta take down those two as fast as possible, yeah," said Willie, "but I don't think we can take on all the ones at the cab. We have to use the distraction Randall's providing while it lasts and get out. The fast one will catch up to us, but I'm hoping we can take him down when he pursues us. Then we just have to outrun the slow ones. We don't have much more time. Once they come out of the cab and surround us, we'll be like people on a lifeboat in a sea full of sharks."

David aimed for the center of mass, his first shot hitting the lead man hard in the chest. He didn't even slow down. Felice fired a shot, but it went very wide. Then David fired again, winging his target in the side. "Why won't he go down?!" he complained. "It's like he's hopped up on PCP or something. He doesn't realize he's supposed to be dead." The red-eyed man with three of David's bullets in him reached the rear of the truck and reached in vain for those on top. The other one wasn't far behind.

Felice fired again, this time hitting the man square in the chest. It was a powerful shot, but he remained standing. "Maybe he wears bulletproof vest," she suggested.

David shot him in the right leg. The man should have been dead, and certainly should have been on the ground. He didn't even seem to notice. "Nope," he said. "That ain't it."

Felice fired again, putting a bullet right in the man's brain, and this time he went down. "Si!" she shouted triumphantly. "You have to hit them in the head!"

"That last shot looked like it slowed the one down-- should we just try and run for it? I think we're faster than everyone except for the runner, but I don't see it now. If we're quick we might be able to get away before he's finished his meal. If not, we'll have to try and shoot it and hope for the best. Tisha's glad to see another one go down, although it still moving was a problem. Still, it would be a heck of a lot easier to outrun a crawling zombie than one that could still walk.

As she looks at the crowd assembling, she considers their options. "Target the fast one first," she urges. "Then we need to focus on making a path for us and hoping we have enough ammo. We may not be able to get off the expressway before others block us in, in which case we may have to run for one of the vehicles around here and hope one of them still works. At the worst case scenario, we'll need to try a running jump and make a break for it, but I don't want to consider that unless there's no other option."

Tisha nods, Felice's words offering her a sense of hope and calmness. She's glad they kept the woman around, despite how much she distrusted her(and despite how much she still does.)

"Let's do that then." She moves forward, making noise as she does so to show she was a moving target.

"I don't see Randall down there," she says once she's moved. "He was pretty beat up, so he might have stayed dead. But we need to remain vigilant just in case." But she did hope he remained dead. Not just due to practicality, but because he did not deserve that. Not when they couldn't even save him.

"Great shot!" says Tisha.

She knows she needs to look down and confirm Randall's condition, but is not sure she can bare to look at him. Hearing his death screams had shaken her, and seeing his body torn to shreds-- or worse, him moving around and looking at them with that terrible stare-- might ruin what little self control she had left. So instead she looks to Willie, hating to have to ask her friend this.

"Do you think you can check on Randall and make sure he's dead? We need to make sure there's no one else in the cab before we make a break for it. I'd do it myself but..." she trails off, hoping he knows her well enough to know she'd not ask unless it was really important.

On the highway-
Everyone got a running start and leapt from the back of the truck to the highway below. David, Tisha, and Felice all hit the ground running, desperation spurring them on, but Willie landed horribly behind them with a sickening crunch. His accumulated injuries finally caught up with him, and he lost consciousness. The crowd of seven slow zombies came around both sides of the truck, reaching the rear at the same time as the crawling one with two bullets in the head. They were making a beeline for Willie. In the near distance ahead was the on-ramp, the way out of this deathtrap. There were no vehicles other than Felice's overturned Porsche between them and it. The only ones within sight were in the pileup further south of the ramp. Another small mob was making their way north from it toward them. They still had enough time to reach the ramp before the infected got there, but any delays could prove fatal - literally.

"Willie!" Tisha screams, immediately going back for him. She calls out to the others. "We can't leave him-- he's the only one who knows how to get to the base. Help me carry him!" She looks at them both but focuses on David, and gives him a look that tells him she will do anything for him if he helps her save the man she thinks of as a father.

On the highway-
Before David could react, Tisha had already reached Willie and effortlessly slung him over her shoulder in a fireman's carry. "Wow, you're strong!" he said. "Let's go, it'll be better if Felice and I have our hands free to shoot." The three of them, with Tisha carrying Willie and David swapping out his pistol's magazine for a fresh one, were able to move at full speed and reached the top of the ramp just in time. The horde from the south was only seconds away, and the horde from the north was not that much further.
OOC,There's no time for Persuade, so I'll count that as a Fast Talk roll, which succeeds. However, your critical success on Strength makes it unnecessary. You can carry Willie by yourself without losing speed or tiring.

Even Tisha is surprised how easy it is for her to lift Willie-- but adrenaline does funny things, and she's not about to question it. She follows the others and starts down the ramp.

"Do either of you know the way to the base from here?" She asks. "Either way, we'll need to find someplace to lose our tail. I don't think I can carry him all the way there, but I don't want to stop until I know we're not being followed.

David and Felice followed Tisha down the ramp, their guns at the ready. "I know it's north," said David. "That's the way we were heading. We can follow the highway from below. We'll probably see it before much longer." They reached the bottom of the ramp. Above them, the two groups of zombies coalesced at the top of the ramp and began to filter down it.

"We must keep moving!" said Felice.

From having listened to Willie's directions, Tisha knew that they needed to go north along the highway overhead and then west at the cloverleaf. Beyond that, she had no idea.

"Lose them?" said David as they started north, leaving the road and crossing open ground. "I don't even know if we can, but if we can get enough ahead of them, we can stop for a little to try to revive him."

Felice ejected her pistol's magazine and slapped in a fresh one as they moved. Glancing back, all of them could see the horde reach the bottom of the ramp behind them and start to head north after them.

It took a while, but everyone ran about a mile to the north underneath the highway. Tisha was even strong enough to travel the whole distance while carrying Willie at her full speed. At this point the cloverleaf was overhead. The undead were still following them, about a third of a mile behind at this point. It would take them four minutes to catch up if they stopped here.

Tisha,The only immediate threats Tisha could see were on the highway above and the pack following them. There were numerous zombies on the cloverleaf milling around, generally moving from north to south. She also got a good look at their surroundings. A short distance to the north was a road paralleled by train tracks going northeast, the direction of Cheyenne, and southwest. The road had on and off ramps to the highway above. I-25 ran north and south, and I-80 ran east and west. She could even see the city and its suburbs, and there were more figures in the distance there, but they were far enough away that they could be avoided. Just beyond the road was a golf course. In the distance beyond that, two miles to the north, she could just make out the southern fence of what had to be Warren Air Force Base, which had an east-west road running alongside it to the south. There were actually two gates on that side too, but it looked like they were being battered by small crowds. South of the eastern gate was a high mountain which was just outside. Willie gradually came to his senses and then his feet. "It hurts all over," he said, "but that lets me know I'm still alive. Thank you, Tisha. I thought I was a goner back there for sure. I can walk, but I can't take much more of this. A feather could knock me over. Good thing we're so close to the base. The east side is the worst, since that faces Cheyenne. The south side's a little better, but not much. I can barely see the fence from here. We need to get to the west side, so we'll have to head northwest from here."

Feeling slightly embarrassed, she draws back and collects herself. "If you think your wounds will slow you down, I can try carrying you again. You were pretty easy to carry when you were dead weight, so I think I'd be able to handle it." She looks over to the horizon when Willie points it out. "Hey, look. The southwest corner of the base seems to have some sort of side entrance-- and I don't see any zombies around it. If we can get to it without attracting any attention, that may be our way in!'

A Persuade (or Fast Talk) roll is definitely needed, and that's a good success, so it will even convince them to let the others in, not just you. ;) Persuade takes some time to work, and there will be communications back and forth between the guards in the tower and HQ, but I'll let you know the results when I post the next major update. Tisha waited anxiously while the guard got on his radio. From here she couldn't make out what he was saying, but it took a little while. It gave David, Willie, and Felice time to close most of the distance to her position. It also gave the infected behind them time to get closer. They were now two thirds of a mile from the base. Finally, the guard spoke on the bullhorn again: "The four of you have permission to approach the gate! You will be admitted to our quarantine facility for medical treatment and examination on General Cutter's orders! We will deal with the infected following you!"

The snipers knew their stuff, for they managed to fire more accurately now that the infected were closer. It looked like two of them were going to slip past them, but they managed to take them both down just before they reached pistol range.

At that point, the suited figure waiting inside the gate unlatched it and opened it, waving for the four survivors to enter.

The woman in the orange suit sealed the gate again. Felice put her pistol on the ground alongside David's. "Ammo too," said the woman in the orange suit, who had a rifle slung on her back, taking out a clear plastic bag. David and Felice dropped their spare magazines, and the woman checked that the safeties were engaged before putting all of the weapons and ammo in the bag and sealing it. "Thanks. I'm Airman Catherine Rourke. I'm here to take you to the quarantine clinic. Please get in the back of the Stryker. There are medical staff there to give you immediate first aid, and you'll receive further treatment at the quarantine clinic we've set up."
