IC-Breakdown(various)

The dead have begun to rise, but they are not the only problem. A small group of survivors at a truck stop in southwestern Nebraska must contend not only with zombies, but with internal division, a nearby group of heavily-armed skinhead survivalists, and even more horrifying dangers. Can they overcome their differences and survive, or will they join the ranks of the living dead?

IC-Breakdown(various)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 8:50 AM Mountain Daylight Time - At the T-Bone
In the garage-
Dave was working on Wallace’s truck. There was some kind of problem with the brake system and it needed parts. Even if they found the parts in the junkyard it would take about half the day to finish the repairs. But Earl wanted Dave to take his time and therefore he could charge extra for labor.

Bob Larkin, the NPS helicopter pilot, was in the garage as well, working on part of the helicopter. Earl was generous enough to let him use the tools from the garage but balked at any discussion of either helping or allowing either Dave or Mitchell to help out with the helicopter repairs. Neither Dave nor Mitchell knew much about helicopter repair but would be willing to learn. Yet there were other cars in the lot in need of repair as well.

Bob was working on the fuel pump and trying to make repairs.
OOC,Dave and Bob, please roll Mechanical Repair.
Outside the garage-
Max was enjoying the sunlight outside.

Bob had spent quite a while to check for leakage in the fuel pump´s connectors and tubings. All the while he had been looking for spare parts around the garage that would be viable to cannibalize to pass as reinforecements to the malfunctioning fuel pump. Might be a way to MacGyver the bird...

To the mechanic he says, "Sure wish we´d gone with a modern gravity flow syste, would´ve spared me some z´s for sure." After inspecting the pump, he adds, "This tank-to-fuel shutoff valve seems busted. Do you guys have any tubings that would help me out with this one?"
He holds up the bent valve and flow-pipes. "20 millimeter diameter."

In the garage-
Dave continued to work on Wallace's rig, a gas tanker. The trailer itself was parked out in the lot, as he was working on the tractor. It was slow going, and he wasn't making good progress. It looked like Wallace would be staying the night. Earl looked over his shoulder, smiling and nodding. As far as he was concerned, Dave was just sandbagging as instructed and not actually at a loss as to how to progress. "Don't forget we still got other cars in the lot," he said. "I'd like to get them out of here by the afternoon. And I expect they'll pay." He turned his head when Bob called out to them. "Like I said, you're free to scrounge, but me and my boys got our own work to do. Find your own damn parts."

Bob soon realized that there was a block in the fuel line. While he could repair the fuel pump, he would have to remove the aviation fuel to drain the line. More importantly, it was unclear whether he would have enough fuel to continue to Omaha. He may need to refuel somewhere along the way.

This could take most of the day. It would go quicker if he had some help.

It hit Bob that the fuel issue could be overlooked if he just ripped out most of the seats and kept one for himself and one for the doctor. The rest of the group could proceed with the state trooper. Getting the doc to the final destination has highest priority.

Mumbling, he leaves the garage to check in with the doctor about changing the travel plan.

"Guys, I´m stripping the bird clean. Would you trade some top of the line seatings for five minutes of hose andling?"

He leaves the sliding doors open to the rear seatings.

In the garage-
"Why would I want your castoffs?" said Earl. "My boys and I have customers to help. Paying customers."
Bob Larkin,Bob realized that there were some serious risks with his plan. The helicopter held five, and while the pilot and co-pilot seats in front were actual seats, the three "seats" in the back were just a cushioned bench built into the helicopter that couldn't be removed. Even with the weight reduction from only carrying him and Dr. Hausmann, he still had serious doubts about whether there would enough fuel to make it all the way to Omaha. It depended on how much he was able to salvage. If just the two of them flew off without their escorts and ended up needing to refuel somewhere, they'd be in terrible danger without anyone else around to protect them. In addition, the helicopter wasn't actually working at the moment, and it would most likely take him all day to repair it by himself. The road conditions between here and Omaha were also unknown, as were the conditions on the ground in Omaha itself, so the group traveling by car might not make it, and if they did, it would probably take all day. This was something he would need to discuss with the others.

Max watched while Dave got to work on the car. It had belonged to that history professor, and it was a wonder she had managed to get it this far. The old rustbucket was a rolling pile of junk, only it wasn't rolling anywhere, not yet. Still, he could fix that. This was more his speed than that big rig. The job looked like it would take two hours, but he was sure he could get it done in one, maybe a little less. Earl might not like him getting it done so fast, but he didn't much care what Earl liked.

In the garage-
Earl busied himself inspecting Wallace's truck, looking for ways he could delay the repairs long enough to squeeze more money out of him.

Outside the garage-
Dave could hear the dogs getting more and more agitated as he worked on the car. Then he heard an unfamiliar man's voice call: "Watch out, there's something under there!"

In the garage-
Boss Earl could not hear anything going on outside, as the garage was soundproofed. Even with the bay door open because Wallace's truck was parked in it, the sound simply did not reach him, not to mention that he was too distracted tinkering with the truck.

In the garage-
Finally hearing the commotion outside, Earl stopped working and stepped out of the garage.

Outside the garage-
Baldwin walked across the asphalt from the direction of the diner toward the garage on the east side of the building. Wallace's truck was parked partway out of one of the garage bay doors, or at least the trailer portion of it. The actual tanker was in the lot. Baldwin's own truck was parked outside the garage, as was a clunker of a car that probably wasn't in good shape even before it had broken down nearby. He could hear a young man shouting "Run!" from the junkyard. As Earl emerged from the garage, where he had been working on Wallace's truck, the mechanics Dave and Mitchell rushed out of the junkyard toward him, followed closely by the two dogs Max and Buddy, as well as Jimmy, a wiry teenager he had never seen before. Mitchell was gripping a rusty fender.

"Now what the hell has got you boys all worked up?" asked Earl, holding a greasy wrench absently in his right hand. "You've got the dogs all riled too. Did you find the part? And who's this kid, and what's he doin' here?" Mitchell realized that he had set the part down near the ruined Chevy, and he had not thought to pick it up in his hasty departure.

Just then, loud gunshots split the air, coming from the junkyard.
