Z-Day - 9:50 AM Mountain Time - Prairie Militia Society Compound
In the cell block-
Two rows of four small rooms, six by nine feet each, lined both sides of the hallway. The only exit from each small room, which apparently had originally been built for storage, was a metal door that was very sturdy and very locked. There were no windows or holes in the doors, so it was impossible to see out into the hall. The rooms were still used for storage, but now they stored women. Six of the eight cells were occupied, one woman in each cell. The only furniture was a stained mattress on the floor, and each cell's only other feature was a bucket that passed as a toilet. The cells were hellholes, and each prisoner had known only unbearable torment within them. All of the women wore lingerie, the only clothes their captors allowed them to have. When they had been locked in the cages on the surface, they had been left naked, and it had gotten very cold at night. At least there was heat in these underground cells, but in some ways being kept down here was even worse. Hitch had brought them breakfast on schedule, and they ate better down here than they had up on the surface too, which wasn't saying much. Nobody knew exactly what time it was, but it was probably mid-morning. It was impossible to tell whether it was day or night down here, and meals were the only way to measure the passage of time.

The rearmost two cells on the right were currently vacant, but they had previously been occupied by Kerry Pierce and her friend Debbie. Both women had managed to escape a few days ago when one of their cells had been left unlocked. Whether they had managed to escape from the compound itself, or were still hiding, or were dead was a mystery. No further escape attempts had been possible since then, as the skinheads had stepped up security after that. Since then, nothing out of the ordinary had happened until today. In the second cell on the right, Zoe Gallagher paced restlessly back and forth like a caged tiger. In the cell next to hers was the beautiful Mexican lifeguard, Alicia Vargas, who lay on her mattress and sobbed quietly. It was possible for those in adjacent cells to hear and talk to each other through the walls, and if they raised their voices they could also talk to those on the other side of the hall. There was also the chance that their jailers could overhear them, so they needed to be careful what they said.

On the left side of the hall, across from Alicia's room, was her friend Raquel Orozco. Both women had come from Tijuana together, and both had been enslaved together. Raquel sat on her mattress, staring into space with her hands on her stomach and wishing she were anywhere else. In the next cell was Katarina Iliescu, a model from eastern Europe with unparalleled beauty. She lay on her back, gazing at the ceiling. The third cell on the left contained Russian student Lara Voronova. She sat huddled on her mattress, her knees pressed up against her chest and her arms wrapped around her folded legs. She rocked slowly back and forth, as if in a trance. The last cell on the left held Mei Ling, a singer from China, who was lying on her mattress and humming to herself.

Listening for foot-steps from the corridor, Lara rocked back and forth on her matress.

The other women listened, most of them hearing something.

Alicia/Raquel/Katarina/Lara,Most of the women could hear footsteps entering the guard room outside the cell block. "What's up?" a skinhead asked. "Where's [b]Horst[/b]?" "We're under attack!" said one of the skinheads they recognized as [b]Ghost[/b]. "[b]Jeff[/b], [b]Guzzmann[/b], [b]Deadeye[/b], and [b]Nitro[/b] are all dead, most of them by a sniper. We had to withdraw, as [b]Horst[/b] and the others hadn't come back yet. Then when we got back, these...flying things swarmed the compound!" "Ja, is true!" insisted [b]Hitch[/b], their usual jailer. "I saw them too!"

Lara kept her stance and wished all the men had been killed. Weak men complaining about bees. In Russia, men swatted bees and ate them with beet soup.
She waits in silence.

9:52 AM
In the cell block-
After a minute, all of the women could hear several sets of footsteps entering the corridor outside the cells from the guard room.

Alicia/Raquel/Katarina/Lara,"A sniper I can believe," said the first skinhead, "but that other stuff? What happened to him?" "She did," said [b]Hitch[/b] "She damn near killed him. For that she shall pay." "We don't have time for that now," said [b]Ghost[/b]. "We need to tell [b]Doc[/b] and make a plan. Let's lock the new girls up and get below."

Lara gets on to her feet and looks for something, anything to be used as a weapon. Maybe, she can kick the door when they unlock it and hit the guy behind it...

9:53 AM
In the cell block-
There was nothing at all in Lara's featureless cell besides the mattress and the bucket. The bucket could potentially be a weapon, so she grabbed it. However, they weren't coming for her this time.

The women could hear one of the skinheads unlock the third cell on the right, the empty one next to Zoe's, and open the door. A moment later someone slammed the door shut and locked it.

"NO!" cried a woman's voice, dragging her feet. "Please, don't lock me in there! I...I can help with the wounded man. I'm a nurse, remember?"

"Yeah, I don't trust you yet," said Ghost. The other empty cell was unlocked and opened, then slammed and locked after a pause.

"You take over guarding the prisoners, Hitch," said Ghost.

"Good," said Hitch. "I can't wait to teach that raghead a lesson."

"Not now, you don't. We can't take any chances with her. We've taken too many casualties as it is."

Lara shouts at the closed door. "Stoi!!! We hungry here! We want some food!"

9:54 AM
In the cell block-
"You girls just ate a couple hours ago," said Hitch. "You'll get lunch in a couple more. Unless...maybe I can give you a snack, but I'll want something in return."

"Let me out!" screamed the woman who said she was a nurse, pounding on the door of her new cell.

"Maybe you'd like to be a movie star. I wouldn't mind breaking you in one bit."

"Not Sally either," said Ghost. "I saw her first. Be seeing you again real soon, Sally." The skinheads walked away further into the facility, except for Hitch who remained in the hallway.

Sally slumped down against the back wall of her cell and began to sob.

Lara ponders what she might will be having to do and answers. "Open, and I do what you like." She sighs and backs to the far wall to get support for her plan.

9:55 AM
In the cell block-
Katarina said something in Russian in the next cell, clearly upset.

Katarina Iliescu/Lara Voronova,"[b]Lara[/b], no!" cried [b]Katarina[/b]. "You know what he will do to you!"

The footsteps of the other skinheads vanished in the distance, but Hitch approached the door to Lara's cell and opened it. "Good girl," he said, leering at her as she pressed herself against the back wall. "Put the bucket down and come on out."

Lara puts down the bucket and opens the cell door to get out of the cell. Doing so she grinds her teeth and bites her lip. The taste of iron feels like a wake-up call. Danger is here. Now. She must make the best out of it. At any cost. Any... cost.

9:56 AM
In the cell block-
When Lara stepped out of her cell, Hitch closed the door behind her and slipped an arm around her waist, leading her out of the cell block and into the guard room.

Azadeh tried to get out of her cell once she heard all of the guards walk away, but the lock was too difficult for her. Mei Ling also tried and failed. Zoe, however, managed to pick the lock on her cell using a piece of a spring she had broken off from the mattress.

In the cell block-
"I'm free," whispered Zoe to the other women. "I'm going to rescue Lara, get Hitch's keys, and come back to let everyone out." She crept down the hall and into the guard room.

Zoe Gallagher rushed out of the cell block and into the guard room. Ahead of her was an exit into another hallway that led eventually to the entrance to this underground area. To the left was a closed door leading to Hitch's notorious movie studio. The red light bulb above the door was lit, indicating that he was filming. Poor Lara, she thought. Please don't let me be too late!

Azadeh Samimi,Through the door, [b]Azadeh[/b] saw a large studio with various movie sets. Two young blonde women in skimpy lingerie were facing off against [b]Hitch[/b], one of them gripping a microphone stand and the other a taser. Before they could strike him, though, [b]Hitch[/b] drew his pistol and spun around, stepping away from both of them. "Drop those weapons, girls!" he bellowed. "No more Mr. Nice Guy!" Reluctantly, the woman with the metal stand let it slip from her fingers and clatter to the floor. The other one also dropped the taser. In spite of all of the horrible things that had been done to them, they still didn't want to die. "That's better." He pointed his pistol at one who had dropped the taser. "You, get in the coffin in the vampire's lair set." She complied, going over to the set and opening up the coffin on a slab. Then he pointed it at the other one. "And as for you, get on the rack in the dungeon set." "Please, not the rack again!" she cried. "You hurt me, now I'm going to hurt you. The rack, or a bullet. Your choice." [b]Azadeh[/b] had seen and heard enough. As much as she wanted to kill [b]Hitch[/b], he was armed and she wasn't. With three against one there might have been a chance, but the other captive women had dropped their weapons and surrendered. Her only chance was to pick the locks on the other cells and free [b]Sally[/b] and the other prisoners. The two women in the movie studio would be tortured and raped, but she had to leave them to their fate, at least for now. Once she had allies, there might be a chance, but they might just have to escape this place and leave the other two behind. She quietly returned to the cell block.

In the cell block-
Azadeh reentered the cell block and went over to Sally's cell. The nurse seemed a capable sort, so she went to free her first.

In the cell block-
Azadeh tapped gently on Sally's cell door. "Sally?" she whispered. "It's me, Azadeh. I'm going to get us out of here."

"Did you get the keys?" asked Sally from inside the cell.

"I'm sorry, no. But I can pick the locks on your cell and the others. That's how I got out of mine. It'll just take some time."

"Please, hurry...before they come back..."

Azadeh set to work. A woman's anguished scream, which the captives who had been here before recognized as Zoe's voice, came from the direction of the guard room.

Azadeh easily got the door to Sally's cell opened, and Sally rushed out and threw her arms around her. "Thank you!" Sally said. "I was so sure they were going to rape me."

"We're not out of here yet," said Azadeh.

Zoe's scream ripped the air again, causing Sally to wince. "We have to help her!"

"No, there's nothing we can do for her. He's armed and we're not. We have to help ourselves. I think we have time to get the other girls out of their cells while he's busy, but then we have to split. We can come back later with weapons and help."

"But he's..."

Azadeh stepped back and put her hands on Sally's shoulders. "No, Sally, we won't do her any good if we go in half-cocked. She's been down here Allah only knows how long. She's endured it this long, she can survive a little longer."

"I don't know..." said Sally.

"That girl who's screaming went in there to try to help her friend, and look what happened to her," said Azadeh, heading down the hall. The next cell was empty, the door ajar, presumably belonging to one of the women who had been captured by Hitch, but the last one was still locked. Azadeh set to work. The lock refused to give, but the door to the cell at the far end of the other side of the hall opened, and a pretty young Chinese woman in skimpy lingerie peeked out of it.

"I guess you're right," said Sally, keeping an eye on the hallway in both directions to make sure nobody was coming.

Another scream tore through the air.

"I Mei Ling," said the Chinese woman with a slight bow. "I pick lock on door."

"Azadeh Samimi," said Azadeh, still struggling with the lock.

"I'm Sally," said the nurse. "We have to free the rest of the girls and get out of here, fast."

Mei Ling nodded. "I help," she said. She went past Lara's empty cell to the next one, which held Katarina, and started working on the lock.

The locks continued to prove stubborn.

"Come on, come on," whispered Sally, still on lookout. "Someone will come back sooner or later."

Azadeh still couldn't trip the lock, but Mei Ling managed to pick the one on which she was working. The door swung open, revealing the most gorgeous redhead imaginable, also wearing very little. She was small and thin, sitting huddled on a stained mattress.

"Katarina, we escape," said Mei Ling to her.

Katarina stumbled to her feet and cautiously emerged from her cell. Just then, a woman's ear-piercing scream came from the direction of the guard room. This was followed by another woman crying: "Zoe! ZOE!"

"We help Lara and Zoe?" asked Katarina.

"No, too dangerous," said Azadeh. "We have to get out of here."

Katarina gave a sad nod. "Poor Lara," she said. Mei Ling moved on to the locked door next to the cell she had just opened and got to work on it.

Meanwhile, Azadeh finally got her door open, revealing a beautiful Latina who scrambled out of her cell the first chance she got. "Alicia," she said.

"Nyet!" cried Lara in the distance. "Zoe, tell him what he wants to know!"

"Here, let me do it," said Azadeh, gesturing for Mei Ling to step aside. She picked the lock of the last remaining cell and opened the door to reveal another Latina, who ran out of the cell and hugged Alicia.

"Zoe, tell him, please!" begged Lara in the distance. "I'm not as strong as you!"

"Okay, stop!" cried Zoe. "I'll talk! Just don't hurt her!"

"He's done torturing them," whispered Azadeh. "We have to go now and be quiet about it, or we'll get caught. Follow me, but close all the cell doors first. With luck, it'll be a while before they realize we're gone."

In the cell block-
The women closed all of the cell doors and crept into the guard room as quietly as they could.

In the guard room-
Sally and Alicia were very silent, but the other women made more noise. Zoe's screams came from within the movie studio. They were in the middle of the guard room, on their way to the door leading back to the surface, when the movie studio door flew open. Hitch stepped out, one arm around Zoe and the other holding a pistol to her. "That's far enough, girls," he said.

"Run!" said Zoe. "I'd rather die!"

"I've got lots of bullets," said Hitch. "Zoe would be the first to die, but not the only one. Now get back to your cells, before I get angry."

Sally hung her head and began to cry. They had been so close to escaping. Azadeh took her hand and led her back to the cell block, followed by the other captives. "There's nothing we can do now," she whispered to Sally. "Later we may have another chance."

In the cell block-
The six women entered the cell block, followed by Hitch holding Zoe at gunpoint. "Get back in your cells," he said, "and put your mattresses out into the hall. You have Zoe to thank for that."

10:10 AM
In the cell block-
The women went back into their cells, and they dumped their mattresses out into the hall. Hitch looked back and saw Lara sneaking through the guard room toward the exit door. "Stop right there, Lara!" he called, pointing his pistol at Zoe, who was still in his grasp.

"Lara, RUN!!!" screamed Zoe.

Lara fled through the other door, slamming it behind her.

"Get in!" snarled Hitch, shoving Zoe into her cell. "Toss out your mattress!"

Zoe shoved her mattress out of the cell as slowly as she dared. Anything to give Lara more of a headstart. When she finally finished, Hitch slammed and locked her cell door. Then he locked all of the others except for Lara's empty cell.

10:11 AM
In the cell block-
"I'm coming to get you, Lara!" roared Hitch as he rushed into the guard room.

"Can you pick the lock again, Azadeh?" asked Sally once he was gone.

"I'm sorry, Sally," replied Azadeh. "I used a piece of mattress spring to do it, and the mattresses are gone now."

"It's my fault," mumbled Zoe. "I told Hitch how I got out, which was the same way. I had to. He was hurting Lara."

"Oh, it's no use!" sobbed Sally, slumping down against the wall. "We're trapped here forever! They're going to rape us over and over, until they get tired of us and put us out of our misery! Why?!" She looked up in despair, and then she saw the ventilation grille in the ceiling. "Hey! There is another way out! Those vents! If we can climb up there and get them open, we can escape. We'll have to walk ourselves up the wall, bracing ourselves across the cells' width. We have to hurry, before someone comes back."

Word was passed from cell to cell, and all of the women tried to make it up to the high ceiling and the ventilation shaft above. Zoe, Alicia, Katarina, and Mei Ling all managed it.

In the cell block-
Raquel made it to the top of her cell when she tried again, but Sally and Azadeh remained stuck on the ground. Zoe and Mei Ling managed to force open their gratings, which dangled down into their cells, but Alicia and Katarina couldn't get theirs open yet.

Sally finally made it to the ceiling, but Azadeh still had no luck. Alicia, Raquel, and Katarina all forced their grates open. Zoe tried to squeeze through, but the shaft was just too small for her. Mei Ling was smaller and managed to slip inside the shaft, crawling above the ceiling to an intersection with a central shaft. More side shafts branched out, leading to the grates above each cell. Another grate in the center allowed access to the hallway below. "I did it!" said Mei Ling.

"Mei Ling, help!" said Zoe. "I'm stuck!"

In the cell block-
Azadeh finally managed to walk herself up to the ceiling, while Sally easily forced open the grating in her cell with her knee while keeping her position on the wall. Alicia, Raquel, and even lithe Katarina had problems fitting in the narrow shaft, but they all were able to wriggle inside. Mei Ling tried to pull Zoe free, but without success, and Zoe couldn't dislodge herself either.

In the cell block-
"I'll get her out, Mei Ling," said Alicia. The lifeguard had pulled drowning people out of the sea, so she was sure she could manage.

Mei Ling made her way back to the central shaft and forced open the grating above the hallway there. It was much easier to open from above. Then she dangled down through the opening and released herself, landing safely on the mattress conveniently below it in the hallway. Sally managed to squeeze into the shaft without difficulty, while Alicia was able to pull Zoe through the narrow tunnel.

Azadeh muttered a curse in Farsi as she failed to open the grate in the ceiling of her cell, but at least she managed not to slip and fall down to the floor. "Hang on, I can pick lock," said Mei Ling from outside.

Mei Ling broke off the end of a spring from the ragged mattress and went to work on the lock of Azadeh's cell, but she couldn't pick it. Sally lowered herself through the hole in the ceiling and let go, landing on the mattress below. In her cell, Azadeh finally managed to force open her grating. "Got it!" she said. "Get out of here, I can make it now."

Sally lowered herself through the opening and landed safely on the mattress while Mei Ling proceeded into the guard room. Alicia, who was about to climb through the hole next, suddenly stopped. "I hear elevator!" she hissed. "They come back! We stay up here!"

Azadeh climbed through the grating in her cell's ceiling and easily squeezed into the shaft.

Alicia quietly pulled the grating back up before the sound of the elevator stopped, trembling with her pulse racing as she waited in silence. Zoe, Azadeh, Katarina, and Raquel waited in the shaft behind her, not daring to move or to make a sound.

Sally hurried after Mei Ling into the guard room.

Mei Ling looked back, seeing Sally following her. She looked past her all the way down the hall to the elevator at the end, where she saw Ghost, Spike, and another skinhead - and they looked back! "Sally, run, they see us!" she called as she barreled through the open door, down a short corridor, and into the reception area beyond.

In the cell block-
Alicia shivered as she heard three pairs of footsteps running closer. The other women waited nervously behind her.

In the guard room-
Sally ran through the guard room, not looking back for fear it would slow her down. Her chest heaving, she ran through the short corridor and into the reception area.

In the reception area-
There was a scream like that of a banshee coming from far upstairs. It had to be Lara. As Sally ran in from the guard room, Mei Ling sped on into the upward-sloping corridor ahead. The surface was a long way up, and Hitch was no doubt ahead of her in pursuit of Lara, but Mei Ling was determined to go through him, rescue her, and escape.

10:20 AM
In the cell block-
Alicia and the others waited, not making a sound. Soon the footsteps were close enough that they could all hear them.

In the reception area-
Sally raced onward, only caring about getting out of this place before they caught her again. She barreled through the door and into the corridor beyond.

In the corridor-
Mei Ling ran around the corner to the right, through the open gate. She reached the bottom of the stairs leading out of here.

10:21 AM
In the cell block-
Alicia didn't make a sound while the footsteps ran directly underneath the air vent, and she could see three of the skinheads running past through the grating. She recognized Ghost and Spike. "Htich, where are you?!" shouted Ghost into his walkie-talkie. "We've got a couple of loose fillies!"

In the corridor-
Sally followed Mei Ling around the corner.

On the stairs-
Mei Ling raced upstairs, with Sally a flight behind. She reached the first landing.

The hallway grew silent, but Alicia remained where she was. "Stay," she whispered. "I still hear them."

Several pairs of footsteps entered the guard room. At this point everyone in the shaft could hear them.

"If I tell you," said Sally, "promise me you won't hurt the other girls either."

"For you, anything," said Ghost.

Sally took a deep breath. "All right. We climbed up to the gratings in the ceilings of our cells, forced them open, and climbed out through the vent shafts. We dropped down into the hallway, where the mattresses you took from us broke our falls."

"There, that wasn't so hard. Now, what are we going to do with you girls?"

Azadeh rolled her eyes, but she did not make a sound. She then realized that she shouldn't judge Sally too harshly for talking. She was an innocent, after all. She hadn't been trained to resist interrogation.

10:27 AM
In the cell block-
"You said you wouldn't hurt us!" protested Sally.

"And we won't," said Ghost. "This time. But we need a way to keep you from escaping again. Next time any of you try anything, there will be no more mercy."

"We can cuff their arms behind their backs, like I did with Lara," said Hitch. "They can't very well climb that way. I have a couple of spare pairs of handcuffs in my studio. I'll go get them."

"No!" cried Sally after a pause. "You promised!"

"I won't hurt you, Sally," said Ghost. "I'll be gentle."

"We have to help her," whispered Alicia.

"There's nothing we can do," Azadeh whispered back.

10:28 AM
In the cell block-
Zoe winced, remembering the first time the skinheads had raped her. She had fought back, for all the good it had done. "Poor Sally," she whispered.

"I...I'm not ready!" Sally choked.

"That's all right," said Ghost. "I have to go out and pick up Horst and the other guys anyway. By the time we get back, you'll be ready to make love to me. In the meantime, I'll take a down payment."

10:29 AM
In the cell block-
Alicia remained frozen while the skinheads marched Sally, Lara, and Mei Ling into the cell block. Their arms were handcuffed behind their backs. Ghost had one arm around Sally's waist, and her blouse had been pulled open and over her shoulders, revealing her bra. Tears rolled down her cheeks.

10:30 AM
In the cell block-
"You girls better not try to escape again!" called Hitch as he unlocked each captive's cell. "We catch any of you out of your cells again, it'll go really bad for you!" He locked Lara and Mei Ling in their cells while Ghost put Sally in hers.

"See you again real soon, Sally," said Ghost with a leer before shutting the door. Hitch locked it, and Ghost moved the mattress away from beneath the vent shaft opening in the ceiling. "There. If any of them tries something now, she's in for a world of hurt."

Alicia clenched her eyes shut and tried to hold back the tears.

10:31 AM
In the cell block-
The skinheads walked away, back to the guard room.

"We have to get them out of those cells," whispered Alicia.

"It's too dangerous," Azadeh whispered back. "Once they clear out, we have to escape from here. We're not even armed."

10:32 AM
In the cell block-
Soon the skinheads could no longer be heard, except barely by Alicia.

Alicia Vargas,"You stand guard here, [b]Hitch[/b]," said [b]Ghost[/b]. "With that bum leg of yours, you're best off playing defense. Just don't go screwing around with the girls until we get back. They've caused enough trouble already, and there's no sense taking chances until there's more of us to watch them. We'll deal with them once we've returned with [b]Horst[/b]." "Ja," said [b]Hitch[/b]. "Be careful out there." [b]Alicia[/b] heard three sets of footsteps fade away in the distance.

"Only Hitch is left in the guard room," whispered Alicia. "The others are all leaving to go get Horst. Now's our chance."

"We can kill him and get his keys and weapons," whispered Zoe. "There are more of us than there are of him. We can't leave without the others."

"No," Azadeh hissed back. "Too dangerous. We have to get out of here."

"You go then," Zoe hissed back. "I'm going to save my friends and finish off Hitch."

The women carefully made their way through the shaft until they were over the guard room, most of them determined to save their friends. They knew that Hitch was somewhere below them, and they had to be careful so that he would not know they were coming.

Alicia led the way. Looking through the vent in the guard room, she could see that Hitch was looking toward the cell block but seemed to be oblivious to their presence directly overhead. "That way," she whispered, pointing down a branch that led to the left. "Weapons." The women crawled down the left vent branch.

10:35 AM
In the vents-
The women found themselves over the movie studio, and Alicia quietly removed the grating, which was easier to do from above. While she did this, Sally crawled up behind them. Alicia carefully lowered herself through the hole in the floor and dropped into the studio below. Unfortunately, she landed hard on the floor of a set designed to look like a hotel room, causing a lamp to fall and shatter. She also cracked her head and knocked herself unconscious. Zoe suppressed a gasp.

Hitch hurried into the studio and found Alicia lying unconscious on the floor. "Well, well, well," he said, licking his lips. "Looks like someone didn't learn her lesson. I'm going to have some fun now."

In the vents-
Zoe seethed with rage as she saw Hitch below her. Azadeh thought that this would be the perfect time for all of them to escape while he was distracted, but she knew there was no convincing the others, most of whom blocked her path. Raquel began to sob, knowing that her best friend was trapped down there.

10:37 AM
In the vents-
"I'll kill him," hissed Zoe, preparing to drop down from above.

"Wait," whispered Azadeh, placing a restraining hand on her leg. "Maybe he'll take off his clothes and his weapon belt first. Then you can catch him with his pants down."

Zoe didn't like it, but she had to admit it was the best chance to save Alicia.

In the studio-
Hitch dragged Alicia over to the bed and laid her on it on her back. He hummed under his breath as he secured her arms tightly to the bedposts with the leather straps attached to them. "I'm going to enjoy this, liebchen." He kissed her roughly.

10:38 AM
In the studio-
Hitch leered at Alicia while he undressed, leaving his weapons belt and clothes on a nearby chair. "At last, liebchen, you are mine," he said, climbing on top of the unconscious Alicia and caressing her.

Determined not to let Hitch rape her friend, Zoe lowered herself through the vent and dropped down, but in her haste she landed hard and injured herself badly. Fortunately, Hitch hadn't heard her, and she still remained conscious.
