Z-Day - 9:29 AM Mountain Daylight Time - North of the T-Bone
On the road-
Michael drove north along the road, with Jenny sitting opposite him. The dirt road went across a narrow bridge over the Lodgepole Creek, and up ahead was an intersection with Route 30, which went left and right from here. The dirt road continued ahead, in the direction the meteorite had fallen.

Michael looks with relief in his rear view mirror as the skinhead-infested truckstop fades in the dust. "I'll just call the police.' He says as he pulls out his phone. "911 isn't it here?" He waits but there is no still no signal and he wishes he still had the old standard issue sat phone handy.

"Damn! That meteor shower seems to have knocked the signal out. Like solar flares do you think, Jenny? " He lapses into silence as he drives and worries how he's going to get his information back.

"Not as much as I thought I did," said Jenny. "I actually just got a Master's degree in it. I just never considered whether meteor showers could affect cell phone signals. Solar flares could knock them out, or maybe something like the Carrington Event. That happened back in 1859, but all it did was disrupt the telegraph. In today's modern world that's so dependent on electricity, it would be devastating." Another mile passed by. "I think we're about halfway there now."

OOC,Dice rolls only show up after you submit your post, not when you preview them, so it's possible that it only didn't appear to work. The one shown outside the spoiler button is the one that you made first, even though it appears later in the post, so I'll count that one, which is a success. I'll let you know what you see when I update, but it may be some time before I do that, as I need to keep this thread in sync with the ones back at the T-Bone. Jenny turns to Michael, "Astronomy is a broad subject, I know a lot about various aspects including meteorites but I am no geologist, and I have only really come across nicely mounted pieces in a glass display at a museum. Getting up close to one that has only just come down is pretty exciting to be honest. I can tell you when would be a good time to look upwards if you want to see them, but as to their physical properties I start to get limited."

Jenny pauses for a moment and asks "Is something bothering you?"

On the road-
The car went over a few rolling hills, and just ahead the road split. It kept going straight ahead, and it also branched off ahead and to the left. By this branch was a sign that said: "Prairie Militia Society Compound. Trespassers Will Be Violated. Stay Out." Straight ahead, a thin trail of smoke could be seen rising in the distance.
OOC,The second roll (outside the spoiler button) was actually the first one rolled, so I'll count that one. Both Psychology rolls failed, so you'll just have to roleplay learning about each other.

A small smirk sneaks across Jenny's face and she quickly speaks up before giving Michael a chance to answer "That smoke could be from the meteorite or something it hit, they can burn up in the atmosphere if they are too small, they don't call them fireballs for nothing!"

She pauses for a second.

The smirk quickly disappeared "I don't like the sound of that compound, do you think that's where those skinheads came from? I hope they aren't interested in the meteorite"

Michael looks sharply at Jenny and then puts his eyes back on the road, "Racing like a fireball, dancing like a ghost." He hums a few bars of a song and then says, "Id rather not the ghost as we may never find it."

He slows at the sign and then keeps driving straight towards the smoke. "I've no doubt the skinheads cam from over there but hopefully they are too busy at the truck stop to bother us. I wonder what there is to burn out here; what did the meteorite hit? Keep your eyes peeled."

Jenny scans the horizon.

Michael Walters,As Michael approached the crater, he couldn't help but hear a buzzing sound. As he neared, he noticed that the meteorite seemed almost translucent. He could see inside the meteorite. In fact it didn't even look like the meteorite was made of rock but something organic. And there was something within it. His excellent eyesight let him see what that was. It was actually dozens of somethings, within a cloud of gas that obscured them. They were small, slippery creatures covered with some slimy ooze. They had leathery wings and deadly looking stingers. One look was enough to tell him that these things were not of this world and were extremely dangerous. "There is something very nasty in that meteorite.' Michael says quietly. "And it is alive." He takes a deep breath. "It looks like multiple organisms contained in a gaseous matrix. The organisms look deadly and who knows if they will survive in this atmosphere once their sac breaks."
"I was supposed to collect rock samples but these are organic!" He looks at Jenny. "How many of these meteorites landed last night? There could be hundreds dotted around. If they can't live in our atmosphere then we might be okay. But if they can, then... we can't let them live. Not all of them at any rate."

Jenny is rubbing her arms anxiously "Alive? Have you got any way of collecting a live sample? You sure we should destroy them though - and if so how? Fire might not work since they came in hot when entering the atmosphere, and if you try and hit them - what if you just break the sacs and release them - or a poison - a virus?". Her speech starts getting a little more rapid.

Michael looks hard at Jenny,
"Are you alright? You feeling okay? You could be right about poison; the creatures had long stingers on them and yes, burning would probably be futile. But I f we let them be and they hatch out of the membrane they are currently in then what's to stop them escaping out across the plain." He flings his arm out to the horizon and stomps back to the car. He opens his boot and searches inside.

OOC,Michael is armed only with a Glock 17 9mm pistol. It is fully loaded with 17 bullets, and he has two spare magazines. You can see this in the Locations and Weapons thread.

Jenny shrugs "Alright? Im freaked out, and im disappointed if that makes any sense - I just wanted to see the meteorite, maybe take a sample of it but this - whatever this is? Not what I was expecting. Your right we can't just let them hatch freely, but what if you end up just freeing them."

Jenny starts pacing back and forth "Well I have two ideas... if we put the spare tire on them before the gasoline then when it catches fire it will melt all over them - that might be better than a straight fire, their membrane might be heat resistant but if you hit them as well and break them open maybe it will burn all over them. Or those jumper cables - what if we poured some water from the radiator on them and then tried jolting them - might stun or kill them, and if we do stun them maybe we can collect a sample? I don't know... I don't know what we should do - but w ehave to do something. Gah."

Bizarrely, Michael seems relieved at Jenny's outburst. He nods,
"You're right, we have to try to do something about it now. If my phone was working I'd call the airbase and they'd dispatch someone or something to help.
As it is, we're on our own. I like the idea with the tyre; the jump lead idea would be too up close and personal for my liking.
Here you get ready with the gasoline in case we need to fire them quickly but hopefully I can position the tyre first without bursting the membrane."

Michael takes a glock pistol from his bag and checks it is loaded before sticking it in his waistband. He passes Jenny the tubing, gas and lighter before hefting the tyre.
"Okay, are you ready for this?"

In the meteorite crater-
Jenny had a head start, as Michael had taken the time to light the gas-filled tire. The yellow gas had smelled like rotten eggs, but it didn't harm them. The creatures within, however, were far more dangerous. The tire went up with a whoosh and ignited the gas, which burned with an eerie blue color, but thirteen of the little aliens flew out of the cloud first and escaped the flames. The other creatures all burned to a crisp, letting out high-pitched shrieks. They were slippery creatures covered with some slimy ooze. They flapped about Michael on leathery wings. He was aware of his body getting attacked by the creatures. They were all over him, climbing on his back, his legs. They gripped his body with sharp claws, grabbing at his clothing. Most of them fell off and left him unharmed, one of them knocked into the flames where it was incinerated, but two of the flying creatures managed to hang on despite his efforts to get rid of them.
