On the back roads-
David didn't hesitate. He slammed the truck into gear and ran over the zombie, crushing it beneath its eighteen wheels. Felice gaped in shock at the mangled, still-moving corpse, and then drove around it to follow the truck.

About a mile later, another crossroads loomed ahead. "This is where we want to turn right," said Willie. "If we stay on this road much longer, we'll end up in Colorado."

OOC,You still would have rolled 1D8 if you'd failed the Sanity roll, not 1D5, but anything higher than 5 would count as 5. It doesn't matter, however, as you succeeded at the roll. Tisha is very relieved when they run over the unfortunate zombie. Then she feels a surge of guilt.

Damn it, for all we know these people can still be cured. I shouldn't be so happy about it. Or maybe I'm just being realistic. Some of the injuries I've seen... there's no coming back from that.

She remains silent, feeling torn.

On the back roads-
David turned right, and the small convoy proceeded down the smaller road. A minute later, there was another crossroads ahead. "Just keep going straight ahead for several more miles," said Willie, checking the map. "I'll tell you when to turn."

"Who needs GPS when we have you, Willie? " Tisha said with a smirk.

On the back roads-
"Thanks, Tish," said Willie.

The vehicles continued their westward journey in silence for another five minutes. Randall's condition was gradually getting worse, but he was still hanging in there. In the distance ahead was another crossroads with a slightly larger road.

"That road up ahead is County Road 17," said Willie. "To the right is Bushnell, a few miles to the north. We want to turn left instead, but we'll only stay on that road for a mile or so before we turn right and head west again."

"Hang in there, Randall," Tisha encourages. "The base is going to have medicine, and we'll get a medic to look at you as soon as we can." Part of her doubts what she's saying, but she figures she owes it to him to at least try and give him hope. And surely him lasting this long was a good sign, she tells herself.

On the back roads-
The small convoy rolled into the intersection, which was clear, and turned left.

"I hope so," said Randall. "I just wish I had something for the pain. Some people take marijuana for pain. Don't suppose anyone has some?"

Tisha looks through her pockets, hoping she has something on her; even an Advil would be something.

On the back roads-
Tisha found a bottle of extra-strength Advil. Randall gratefully accepted it and popped a couple of them, dry-swallowing. "Thanks," he said. "It'll take some time to kick in, but I think it'll help. I feel better already. Must be the placebo effect."

David turned right a mile later as per Willie's directions, and Felice followed in her Porsche.

"Glad I could help," Says Tisha. "Let me know if you need anymore." She pops one herself.

On the back roads-
"It's not safe to take any more for a while yet," said Randall. "It still hurts, but I'll have to put up with it until we get to the base where they'll have something stronger."

"This is County Road 16," said Willie as an intersection approached. "Just go straight on for a few more miles until we reach the Wyoming state line, where the road ends and we turn right."

It was probably a good thing Randall still was concerned about the proper dose of medication, Tisha decided. She goes quiet and looks out the window at the scenery going by.

On the back roads-
The vehicles kept rolling for several more minutes, passing roads heading left and right. The scenery of Nebraska was plain, flat, and uninteresting. There was nothing here but cornfields and farms. Nebraska's farmland had suffered terribly during the massive flooding in the spring of 2019, but this area either had been spared the worst of it or had recovered with little sign of the damage. Eventually, after passing a small road branching off to the left, they approached a right-angled curve where the road turned right. Shortly before the curve was a sign that read "Welcome to Wyoming, the Equality State."

"Ah Wyoming. The only state less interesting than Nebraska," Tisha comments wryly. "Still, I suppose we go where the story takes us. And I'm not about to give up this exclusive."

On the back roads-
The truck and sports car turned right, taking the curve slowly, and then left again at the next curve. The road came to an abrupt halt at a T-intersection, which was thankfully clear.

"Turn left here," said Willie. "To the right is Pine Bluffs, and towns are best avoided. We'll have to circle around Cheyenne to the south and come up at the base's back gates."

"Thank God you're here, Willie. I'm pretty sure We'd be lost without you. Or wander into more of those things." She lets out an involuntary shiver.

She looks to see if Felice is still following them.

9:45 AM
On the back roads-
"Thanks," said Willie. "At some point we'll have to get fairly close to Cheyenne, so we're likely to run into more of them then, but we can at least avoid entering the city, at least. There's no way around crossing I-80, though, since it's between us and the base."

David turned left onto the road, and Tisha was able to look out the window at that time and see Felice still following in her Porsche. "Just let me know when to turn," he said.

There was a narrow dirt road on the right. "Not here," said Willie. "That goes nowhere. We do want to turn right, but at the next road, about a mile from here."

"Ugh," Tisha groans. "Be ready," she tells David.

She still did not trust Felice. The woman had criminal written all over her. But if nothing else maybe she'd distract some of the things if they got too close.

On the back roads-
A mile later, there was another intersection ahead. To the left was another dirt road, but to the right it was paved.

"Here," said Willie. "Turn right here."

"At least we're going on an actual road," says Tisha.
