Barnard's Rest Colony, Titan

After dropping Isabella off at the apartments, Tyson proceeds on to the medical clinic where he leaves Dr Johnson, Marshal Favre, and Executive Officer Steinmann.

He then drives on to the maintenance sector and stops at a large open area marked 'Engineering Facility'. Kiara, Sam, and Moses disembark and wander inside.

The Engineering Facility is a vast open area filled with cacophonous sounds of clanging and hissing. It is hot and there is the smell of combustible gases mixed with a metallic tang. Sparks, smoke, and condensing water vapour obscure the air and the lighting casts a dull orange glow and flickers intermittently.

The floor is covered in patches of yellow cross hatching marking out hazardous areas and there are numerous large red emergency stop buttons and flashing warning lights.

Various workbenches are set up around the room and these are scattered with tools; drills, hammers, etc

Piled aganst the walls are crates of different sizes along with stacks of rigid metal pipework and coils of flexible tubing. Automated trucks and carts drive in and out of the facility hauling parts.

Pieces of heavier machinery are either left standing in the middle of the floor or being used by technicians and engineers; including forklifts, heavy manipulators, large saws and drills, and even a power loader.



Around the upper level of the space is a metal walkway accessed by some stairs and in one corner is what looks like an office with one small grimy window.

There is a bustling workforce of technical staff, all wearing large orange ear defenders. In one corner a maintenance engineer wearing a face shield uses a cutting torch to remove the mangled manipulator from an ARM

Against the back wall a technician is pressing the nozzle of an incinerator unit into a large metal container filled with waste and hosing the contents with flaming combustible gas.

By the entrance are two people dressed more like corporate scientists than technicians. One man has an array of transparent beakers and is dipping in various probes attached to datapads and pipetting liquids of different bright colours. Nearby a woman is surrounded by electronic equipment and seems to be using some kind of spectroscopic imager to examine a sheet of metal which is bent and misshapen.

Still intrigued by CENTRAL's lack of response to her questions about the epicentre of the tremors, Kiara tries to spot any adverse effects on the station's infrastructure from these eruptions.

Upon reaching the sector, she is slightly bewildered by the noise and bustle, so makes a beeline for the scientists.

"Um, hi - Kiara Khan: sent here by the company to, uh, check up on things?"

The inflection of the last part of this sentence is raised slightly, turning the introduction into a question, swifly followed by a nervous smile.

Sam keeps an eye out for any structural damage on the way to engineering.

"And I'm Samantha Golightly," adds Sam. "Is Chief Engineer Arnold White here?"

On the ride over there is no evidence of any structural damage to the colony buildings.

The female scientist gestures to her ear defenders, indicating that she can't hear either Sam or Kiara. Moses writes something on a datapad and holds it up for her to read. She shouts over the din, 'Chief White? Dunno. Might be in his office...' she gestures to the corner office, 'Or over at one of the pumping stations.'

"We're here now," says Sam, "so let's try the office first."

“Yeah, you’re right.”

Kiara follows Sam to the office.

As Sam and Kiara head over to the office one of the technicians catches sight of them and comes over. He gestures for them to come in to the office. Once insjde with the door closed the noise and bustle is heavily dampened. He takes off his ear defenders, 'Hi, how can I help?'

"Hi; the company sent us," repeats Kiara. "We're looking for Chief White."

"I'm Samantha Golightly," says Sam. "We're part of the team Richter Dynamics has sent here to resolve the issues that have been reported."

“Kiara Khan: here to run a few tests on the pumps, pipes and such.”

He looks at Sam and Kiara's ID badges and frowns.'We can do that ourselves, no need to be sending people all the way out here for routine tests.'

Moses, who has been wandering around the engineering facility raps on the door and joins them. 'Moses Goodkind Corporate Safety Inspector'.

The technician seems to shrink back a little at hearing this, saying 'If you want to run some tests be my guest but you're better off talking to Arnie White, he's in charge. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with the equipment.'

Noticing the technicians discomfort at Moses, Kiara smiles.

“That’s good to know, Mr...? Perhaps you could show us what tests you run, so we can see the results first hand. That way the company,” and here she nods towards Moses, “will know just what a great job you’re doing.”

'I ain't Mr nobody, I'm Mike' he says, extending a hand. He takes out a datapad and gives them an overview of the routine diagnostic and maintenance schedules. Superficially it all seems in order.

Kiara is more interested in what the machinery is pumping than the pumps themselves.

Between them, Kiara, Sam, and Moses can see that while there is evidence of minor stresses on the colony systems, particularly in response to the cryovolcanic quakes they've heard about, all the pumping equipment seem to be working fine.

Over the last few months there have been some occasional episodes of loss of power due to the tremors disrupting the conduits from the pylons in the upper atmosphere that generate wind energy.

In terms of the maintenance schedule, the maglev is working fine and there are normal maintenance logs for the other vehicles in the colony including the copters, the surface rovers, and the autonomous drones including the autonomous robotic manipulators (ARMs) and the dragonfly airborne surface probes. The one exception to this is that one of the copters has been heavily damaged.

"What caused the damage to this copter?" asks Sam, pointing to it on the datapad.

“And when was it damaged? Did it coincide with a tremor?” adds Kiara.
