IC - 25 - Paperwork - Everyone

6.30pm Thursday 11th March 2010, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.

A five-year old girl, Regina Balfour, is kidnapped in broad daylight from the Eden Shopping Centre, while her mother’s back is momentarily turned. Left behind is her ladybird shaped backpack, which contained supplies for her insulin pump. She needs her medication to live more than a few days, and her condition will rapidly deteriorate without it...

Kris scans the sky. It's a bit overcast but the sun peaks out from behind a cloud, the rays lifting the chill from his skin. There's no sign of blood moons or winged angels. Prisha's shiny black Range Rover sits on the drive. Kris unlocks it and climbs inside. So this is how the other half lives.

In another space on the drive is the battered van, and Jocelyn climbs into the driving seat. It seems she's got the worse part of this deal.

They both start their engines and switch on the radio, flicking between stations to find the local news. Tuning in to BBC Three Counties Radio, it isn't the news but the breakfast programme is talking about the power cut in Buckinghamshire. It seems it has spread and now covers most of Buckinghamshire, an area from Aylesbury in the north to High Wycombe in the south. But it has extended beyond Buckinghamshire into Slough, but not as far as Reading, Watford, or Oxford. It seems the power companies aren't sure what is causing it but they have assured the public that they're on the case.

Okay, so who is Simon going with and where's everyone going? Splitting up? Straight to the station? Going to pay a visit to the Balfours? Cooked breakfast and a hot cup of tea?

Kris will need to head to the station to report in.

Simon decides to go with Kris to get an idea of what precautions the police are taking against the Balfours.

"I'm aware you wish to do things by the book so won't press it, but perhaps we should contact Lucy Bates later. She saw at least some of what Balfour's capable of, and may be willing to assist us."

"That's a good idea," says Jocelyn. "We should stop by the pub and return the van first. Then I can go with you to the station in Prisha's car."

”Agreed,” replied Kris. “Let’s go.”

He switched on the seat warmers, checked his hair in the mirror, put on one of Prisha’s Celine Dion CDs and set off towards the station.
