[IC] Chapter 4: The Wergyn Estate

When the Provost of Britain’s most prestigious college for boys is bequeathed a parcel of land in a rural backwater he’s never even heard of, the venerable old man calls upon a select number of friends to look into the matter.

Why was Dr. Preedy mentioned in the last will and testament of the Squire of Wergyn Hall? Where are the ruins of St. Wergyn’s church, of which he has become the unexpected custodian? What is the truth behind the strange tales and legends that haunt the benighted countryside?

Set in the 1900s, The Provost of Eton’s Inheritance leads the investigators from the rarefied air of the college cloisters to the wilds of the English Marches, in this 7th edition Call of Cthulhu adventure inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft literary heroes: the master of the ghost story, M.R. James.

Excellent riposte Mr. Tereshchenko!

While parrying the fiend’s attack you strike it hard with your weapon (I’m assuming with either your cosh or stick; either way 1d8 damage I believe. Allow me...)
Damage,[dice]0[/dice]
Alas the blow, while expertly aimed, is only a glancing one and does little to deter the creature. You are now locked in combat and will have to somehow disengage if you wish to reload.

You may all declare your intentions for the next combat round and roll accordingly.

Oh, and please roll listen, with a penalty die. You’ll need a hard success...
Hard success,Over the ringing in your ears and the sound of combat you hear a muffled thump from the passage behind you, followed by a laboured dragging sound.

It is highly unlikely that, deafened as he is, the dull-eared Grigori will hear anything
Listen 20%,[dice]0[/dice]
Spoiler:
And again for tens, [dice]1[/dice]
As for intent... Well, if an opportunity presents itself he will take a step back and reload... But otherwise it is another round of fisticuffs...

The fiend attempts to counter your blow.
Brawl,[dice]0[/dice]
Possible damage,[dice]1[/dice][dice]2[/dice]
Thankfully, his wildly swinging claws skim over your head, allowing you to land a solid blow with a resounding crack!

The creature is still on it’s feet however.

I'll try to strike the fiend with my sword, although I'm beginning to wonder if only Miss Knight's charm will be truly
efficacious in the current situation

Listen roll 20%:

[dice]1[/dice]

I think I heard something, but it's just the ringing in my ears.

Cynthia is too distracted by the battle to hear anything. She tries to keep the medallion pressed against the fiend, hoping it will hurt or at least distract it.

Are these two rolls both for listen Professor, or is one of them for the attack?

Both for Listen, disadvantage in effect.

Wasn't sure if I needed to to roll for attack just yet(?)

Please do Professor (combat on forum games is a little less linear than in ‘real life’ games. You can roll, and then I’ll slot in the results when your turn comes).

The creature claws at you ineffectively as you press the talisman against it. Thankfully you are only assailant by the unpleasant smell and nothing more.

Cynthia was already sure that the talisman is their best weapon against the creature, and the fact that it is trying to attack her instead of the others confirms it. She keeps pressing the medallion against it.

It is the turn of the thing that was deLancey. Curiously he does not strike at Miss Knight, but instead continues to target Mr. Tereshchenko.
Attack roll hard pass,[dice]0[/dice]
Possible damage,[dice]1[/dice][dice]2[/dice]
Mr. Tereshchenko, please roll to fight back or dodge. If you fail, please make a CON roll too.

Even through the noise of battle, the should of a slow shuffling and dragging can be heard behind you.

Thankfully the fiend's filthy claws only scratch you slightly. Please take 3 damage.

Actions for next round please. Mr. Tereshchenko, if you can disengage to reload by winning a brawl or dodge roll.
