[IC] Chapter 4: The Wergyn Estate

When the Provost of Britain’s most prestigious college for boys is bequeathed a parcel of land in a rural backwater he’s never even heard of, the venerable old man calls upon a select number of friends to look into the matter.

Why was Dr. Preedy mentioned in the last will and testament of the Squire of Wergyn Hall? Where are the ruins of St. Wergyn’s church, of which he has become the unexpected custodian? What is the truth behind the strange tales and legends that haunt the benighted countryside?

Set in the 1900s, The Provost of Eton’s Inheritance leads the investigators from the rarefied air of the college cloisters to the wilds of the English Marches, in this 7th edition Call of Cthulhu adventure inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft literary heroes: the master of the ghost story, M.R. James.

SAN 54

(-1SAN) Phew, that was close. Slightly shaken, the Professor nonetheless takes a firm grip on his sword and prepares to do battle with the fiend.

Miss Knight,A word of caution, the fiend's rags are muddy and damp, and the candle is your only source of light (your glow may not be enough). Consider whether you want to confront the thing in the dark...

Cynthia reconsiders, not wanting to risk losing their main light source. Instead, she tries to touch the medallion to the bony monstrosity, knowing that it is somehow their key to defeating it, waiting until after Grigori fires his shotgun so that she will not be in the line of fire.

How much SAN have you lost now Mr. Tereshchenko?

Miss Knight, please make a DEX roll.

OOC:   Grigori is down to 40 from his original 50... I need to check what he was on when this 'day' began... as it could be the magic 20% loss...

It seems to have been 47 at Miss Coates cottage, which I think was the first san test after awaking from the night at the inn. So not quite there yet...

Presuming he is in a fit state to do so after a scream that may bring more of the ceiling down, and he can take aim without danger of injuring Miss Knight, Grigori will let loose with his shotgun...
OOC:   Let me know, and if so I'll roll it

Mr. Tereshchenko, as you have the highest DEX I will allow you to shoot before Miss Knight attempts to touch the fiend with her talisman. However, due to your SAN failure, you are very rattled, so please take a penalty die when rolling to hit.

After that, Professor Garrett, you may act (though you may roll now if you wish and I will factor it in when appropriate).

Sword Skill 20%

[dice]0[/dice]

Unsurprisingly the Professor isn't much use in a fight and swings the sword around ineffectually.

Cynthia's agility remains true.
OOC,If we're at point blank range, the Shotgun roll gets a bonus die, which should cancel out the penalty die and make that roll a hit. DEX roll (60% stat) to touch the fiend with the medallion: [dice]0[/dice]

Regarding range, I’ll leave that up to Mr. Tereshchenko. Are you standing back sir, or are you at point-blank? If the latter, then you run the risk of being attaboy the fiend if he survives your shot.

OOC:   Regarding range... I'm not sure how big this space is. Point blank is I bleieve dex/5, which for Grigori would be 15 ft. That seems reasonable... In which case possibly he should have had a bonus die that would counteract the penalty die.... If so, 4d6 please.. :)
Although this may be entirely too retcon, in which case claw away ;)

That’s fine (apologies for missing the bonus die).

Before Miss Knight or Professor Garrett can act, Mr. Tereshchenko blasts the creature at point blank range.
Damage,[dice]0[/dice]
The skeletal, mud-caked thing staggers back a little under the force of the blast. Red mud and black ichor splatter the wall behind it, but it continues to advance.

Miss Knight deftly lunges at it with the talisman, but the fiend is equally agile, but she strikes home! The monster hisses, obviously in some discomfort, but seems otherwise unharmed.

Professor Garrett swings the sword awkwardly and fails to connect.

The creature tenses, ready to strike...

Perhaps sensing in retaliation for the damage he has dealt, the creature slashes at the Russian with sharp, dirt-encrusted claws.

Damage,[dice]1[/dice][dice]2[/dice]
Mr. Tereshchenko, you must either dodge or fight back (with a bonus die due to outnumbering). Fail and you’ll take 6 points of damage and will need to make a CON roll.

OOC:   So... I think Grigori can fightback with another blast from his shotgun, which can fire twice per round, but then he will need to reload, which I believe takes a round to do...

Alas no, for you used one shot against the rats. Unless I’m mistaken, you didn’t reload afterwards?

Edit: I see no mention of reloading after the rats I’m afraid.

So, seeing as your humble narrator is of kind heart, I shall allow you to re-roll for either brawl or dodge.
