[IC] Chapter 3: Wergynstone

When the Provost of Britain’s most prestigious college for boys is bequeathed a parcel of land in a rural backwater he’s never even heard of, the venerable old man calls upon a select number of friends to look into the matter.

Why was Dr. Preedy mentioned in the last will and testament of the Squire of Wergyn Hall? Where are the ruins of St. Wergyn’s church, of which he has become the unexpected custodian? What is the truth behind the strange tales and legends that haunt the benighted countryside?

Set in the 1900s, The Provost of Eton’s Inheritance leads the investigators from the rarefied air of the college cloisters to the wilds of the English Marches, in this 7th edition Call of Cthulhu adventure inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft literary heroes: the master of the ghost story, M.R. James.

"The local dogs aren't reacting either, humans are one things animals are another" He muses loudly.
OOC:   I am assuming this is a narrow pathway and to get by we will be in grabbing range.
"Lets hold here a moment, keep it at firing range and maintain the advantage, I don't think we can make it past safetly yet. Everyone OK?"

Tom is still holding the line and will try and keep himself in harms way defending the other. If there is no way to pass safety he will back the group up 10 yards and then wait for around 10 minutes. He doesn't want to admit defeat yet and he also knows turning his back may leave the group exposed.

"I'm all right" says Cynthia. "Let's not wait too long, though. We don't know how much time we have to prevent...whatever. One thing is certain, we cannot turn back now."

Henry Joseph Lewis III continued to listen to the others speculate on how best to deal with their present situation. Surely most of them would make it if the beast attacked them as the group proceeded at a run toward the church. A former collegiate track and field runner at Oxford, the youthful dilettante was rather swift of foot, so he liked his chances if it came to that. As a precaution, he withdrew a pistol from beneath his heavy overcoat and set his focus solely upon the gap in the wall.

"I concur with Miss Knight. Let's keep moving." he said.

Grigori wonders why they are privy to these fearsome noises and the rest of the village apparently was not...

He throws a rock through the gap at whatever. And presuming nothing leaps out, casts another. Does anything react to provocation? He challenges the entity to make itself known, in Russian and English..

Keeping low and quiet, you are able to approach the gap in the wall without, it seems, attracting the attention of whatever lurks behind to any greater degree.

Meanwhile, covered by those who are suitably armed, stones are tossed in and around the aperture.

As they clatter along the lane and against the brickwork, the unholy snarling an howling increases to manic levels. Surely the beast will leap out to tear you limb from limb at any moment?

One stone skitters along the cobbles before bouncing through the yawning darkness of the open doorway and into the shadows...

...and at the same time the bestial racket stops abruptly...

There is silence.

The dark yawning aperture, on closer inspection, is merely an open wooden door set in the crumbling wall.

And through this door...

...is a modest kitchen garden, illuminated a little by a dim light flickering in a window of the adjacent cottage.

And that is it. There is no crazed maniac, no slathering beast, no hideous monster.

If you hadn't all experienced the same thing, you'd be forgiven for doubting your senses, if not your sanity.

Speaking of which, a SAN check (1/1d4) each please.

Henry Joseph Lewis III looked on incredulously for several moments, then reached up with his empty hand and clutched at his long locks of hair, laughed shrilly, then broke off into a run towards the church. He had to get to sanctuary.

I must have daydreamed it, like I always do, thinks Cynthia. But wait, the others heard it too! Perhaps the power of suggestion or...something...
