[IC] Chapter 4: The Wergyn Estate

When the Provost of Britain’s most prestigious college for boys is bequeathed a parcel of land in a rural backwater he’s never even heard of, the venerable old man calls upon a select number of friends to look into the matter.

Why was Dr. Preedy mentioned in the last will and testament of the Squire of Wergyn Hall? Where are the ruins of St. Wergyn’s church, of which he has become the unexpected custodian? What is the truth behind the strange tales and legends that haunt the benighted countryside?

Set in the 1900s, The Provost of Eton’s Inheritance leads the investigators from the rarefied air of the college cloisters to the wilds of the English Marches, in this 7th edition Call of Cthulhu adventure inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft literary heroes: the master of the ghost story, M.R. James.

I'll try the bonus dice

Think that makes it 12%? I've spotted something and inspiration seems about to strike! Could these two things be connected?

Professor Garrett,The bonus die is usually 1d10*10, but on the forum most players just roll another 1d100 and use the 10’s value. Mr. Tereshchenko has already rolled successfully so the point is moot :) Inspecting the sword, you can plainly see that it is not the type of weapon you would associate with a Norman knight. In fact it is more like an Arabian scimitar from an earlier epoch.

What horrors do you stumble across...?

A half-used candle, still set in the twisted remains of a brass candlestick.

You are sure to have enough matches between you to light it, and by your reckoning it should last a good while.

Now, do you wish to descend the ladder?

"I shall bear the light," says Cynthia, taking hold of the candlestick and lighting it. "I'm the only one not burdened with a weapon, and I'd be rather useless with one - though the candlestick may serve as one in a pinch. Shall we descend, gentlemen?"

Grigori peers down into the darkness.

"I'd be a little happier if we had some forewarning of what is down there..."

He rips a cuff from his shirt, lights it on the candle, and drops it down alongside the ladder... Watching to see what the burning rag reveals... before it splutters out. At the very least how deep this hole is...

"Unless they have the candle, whoever leads will be climbing into darkness... And hopefully the only thinng we may need to defend against is coming up behind us... Would you be happy to climb down with the candle Miss Knight? While I guard against our pursuer? Or perhaps the Professor should take the light for the descent...?"

The light from the burning rag reveals a substantial drop: deep enough to cause possible injury if one were to jump down, but not so deep that the ladder reaches the bottom without the climber having to drop off the end.

Loose stones skitter close behind you - whatever it is that shuffles towards you is getting nearer.

The ladder creaks and bows alarmingly as you descend. Predictably, please can each of you make a DEX or climb roll.

Miss Knight,You descend the ladder gracefully. In the flickering candlelight you discover that you are in a rough-hewn tunnel, just about head-height, which leads off into the darkness. After a short moment, Professor Garrett clambers down deftly to join you. Waiting for Mr. Tereshchenko, you are horrified by an almighty ‘crack!’ as the ladder breaks under his weight! In an instant the Russian plummets to the bottom, landing with a sickening thud. He lies still, unseeing eyes staring glassily at you.
Professor Garrett,Following the graceful Miss Knight, you descend the rickety ladder with aplomb. Mr. Tereshchenko follows you somewhat awkwardly, landing on his feet with an ‘oof’. In the flickering candlelight you discover that you are in a rough-hewn tunnel, just about head-height, which leads off into the darkness.
Mr. Tereshchenko,Following the others, you descend the ladder rather awkwardly. Nearing the bottom, your foot slips, causing you to half-drop and half-jump the remaining distance. You land heavily with an ‘oof’, but are otherwise unharmed. In the flickering candlelight you discover that you are in a rough-hewn tunnel, just about head-height, which leads off into the darkness.

Grigori brushes himself down...

"Thank you... Cynthia... Your ministrations are most kind, but really unnecessary... I am quite alright.

Perhaps if you would lead the way with the light, I could follow close behind you with my gun, ready to leap forth and defend you if necessary.

Professor Garrett might take the rear guard with his sword."

"You're alive!" gasps Cynthia with relief. "You're quite welcome. I'd thought the fall had killed you, but it must have been another illusion. Yes, I'll lead the way. The talisman will warn me when the enemy is near." She bears the light aloft and proceeds down the tunnel.
