4 Genius Loci: Renewed Interest

Doors to Darkness yawn open to reveal three hair raising tales!

Genius Loci - Not all is well at the Kirby State Lunatic Asylum and it’s down to the investigators to heed a friend in need’s cry.
Ties That Bind - Strange rock formations have been found in Mrs. Carrington’s prized fountain. But these are like no rocks seen before!
None More Black - The death of a Rice University student leads the investigators into unsavoury neighbourhoods and dark business dealings.

Are you the Dreamer or are you the Dream? Shadows flitting at the corners of your vision, haunting laughter just outside your window and inhuman, eerie sounds in the middle of the night, all of this and more await the unwary once you open the Doors to Darkness!

OOC:   Jimmy has unsuccessfully tried to dig up personal information on the good doctor. It seems that he doesn't leave the place, ever. Jimmy also tried to have his men tail anyone leaving the hospital, an employee preferably. He figured they could bring the guy over for a little "chat". No word on how that's gone yet.

OOC,[b]McBride[/b] was probably there when the stone was broken. He may know what has happened to it.

OOC:   Yes we need to speak to McBride. Can we find out if Dr. Berger has a home address, as we said already?

OOC:   To be honest, I've lost track of who've we've researched! Our library use rolls haven't been great :)

OOC:   I'm pretty sure the doctor doesn't have a home address, or a family. I agree about trying to track down McBride.

A Library Use roll will help you move forward.
However, I feel we should start using the bonus die in this instance, since you've already established your ability to access and use the available archived material.

Carl easily finds what they're looking for in the archives.
OOC,Library Use roll (20% base skill) for further research: [dice]0[/dice] Bonus die: [dice]1[/dice] That's an extreme success on the initial roll even without the bonus die, which also results in an extreme success (04)! :o

Although still freaked out by the apparition, Coach also manages to find something after a little digging.

Convinced that McBride was a solid lead to work, Jimmy the Chin assisted his associates with digging through the various archives in the city to uncover details on the man. However, it quickly became obvious that the made man was just not cut out for this kind of thing and that perhaps he was hindering their work more than helping it.

As you are looking through the archives, you get the sense that you are being watched again. The basement has no windows, so when the lights flicker the sense of deep darkness is something you've begun to put to the back of your mind.

This time the lights flicker and do not reilluminate the chamber.
You look around in pitch black darkness, and you hear the lock on the door turn and click.

Dim lights slowly bring a lone figure into focus. McBride stands before you holding a heavy revolver in hand.

"I c..c..came here aimin' ta kills ya'" his thick Irish accent unmistakable.

"I’m Andy MacBride. They know I’m out and about. They want me to fix it so yous won’t come 'round the 'ospital na more.

B..B..But instead, I’m telling you what I shouldn’t. So you listen good!"

"There’s sumpin' terrible living ah da 'ospital. It’s always been there.

"It’s a p..p..power that lives in the walls...and the halls...and the gardens."

"Dr. Berger is going to sacrifice yer friend L..L..Larry to the thing at the next d..d..dark of the m..m..moon!"

"Larry don’t have much time!"

With that, the lights go dark and the door slams shut, then the normal, bright lights resume their normal flicker...

"The almanac will say," says Carl, finding a copy and looking up the date of the next new moon.

OOC:   I assume that McBride is gone when the lights come back on?
Coach rubs his eyes at the sudden brightness.

"What the hell? Did I just imagine that? If McBride is right, we all need to go back to the nuthouse and rescue our pal pronto. Jimmy, reckon your boys are up to it?"

"I'm okay with weapons in general," says Carl. "What use they're put to is what counts. As for breaking into the asylum, I'm not in favor of breaking the law, but I'm less in favor of Larry being murdered. One possibility is that I could wait nearby in the getaway car. If you're able to get him out anyone noticing, all well and good. If I hear any shooting or loud noises, I can rush inside, pretending to be responding to a crime. That will give me all the legal justification I need to enter. I can always say I was staking out the place when I heard the gunfire if I'm questioned about it later."

Jimmy looked around with concern as the lights flickered, occasionally catching the gaze of one of his associates. The instant the lights failed completely, the gangster whipped out his revolver. When McBride suddenly appeared, he leveled the barrel at the man, but held his fire. His keen eyes noticed that the hammer on the other man's weapon hadn't been cocked back. Further, based on the quaver in the Irishman's voice, he was no killer. A moment later, he was gone just as quickly as he came.

"Could have bumped one of us off before he bit the big one, guess we's should be glad he's a coward." he said aloud as he re-holstered his firearm.

He turned towards Muldoon when he implied using his men for the raid. The truth was, he didn't even like Larry that much. He was only doing this as a personal favor for the Wheel, but he wasn't here no more.

"Hey look, I got a territory to protect. The most I could spare would be a couple of hatchet men and a driver or two. Even that's pushing it." he replied.

A quick search in the almanac reveals that

"The Dark of the Moon refers to the period in the 29.53 day lunar cycle when the Moon is decreasing, getting darker or “waning.” The dark of the Moon is the period before the New Moon, or from full Moon to the New Moon, which lasts about 14+ days. So you can do your “Dark of the Moon” tasks during the day or night in this time period."

The dark of the moon, just before new moon is tomorrow night.
