Limehouse Police Station - London, England
5:10 AM - Sunday, September 8, 1940

Eddie and Archie made their way to the Limehouse Police Station, escorting their prisoner. With the sky beginning to lighten, they were now able to locate it without difficulty. A chubby sergeant in his mid-fifties sat behind the front desk working on paperwork, his hair and whiskers white. A steaming cup of tea rested on the desk.

"Morning sargeant. Me & the good Reverend picked up a stray last night. The pound was full, so we thought we'd bring him 'ere."

Eddie guides Friedrich forward. "No trouble now, there's a good lad."

The sergeant looked up from his paperwork and blinked. "Eh?" he said. "Good work, chaps! We'll put Fritz here in the cells for now, until we can arrange more permanent accommodations."

"My name is Friedrich, not Fritz," said the German.

"Well, whatever your name is, war's over for you. Constable Lee!"

A policeman with Chinese features came forward from the back. "Yes,Sarge?"

"Got a prisoner here. Shot down last night, most likely. Take him to the cells and lock him up."

"Yes, Sarge." Lee patted Friedrich down to make sure he had no weapons, noting the empty holster. "Where is his sidearm?"

Archie has been standing back, letting the others get on with it, content with his own thoughts.

"Eh?", he snaps out of it. "Oh yes, his service pistol."

Archie unbuttons his uniform jacket, carefully removes the pistol and with practised ease removes the magazine and unloads it (in a safe direction) before laying the parts on the charge counter.

"Thank you Sergeant, Constable. The young German Officer," subtle but slight emphasis on the word "officer" here, "Has been most well behaved to date, just for your information. Well, blessings to you both on this day, remember what Our Saviour said about peacemakers, and that is what you both are." To the leutnant he adds, "Good luck leutnant, your war is over, start thinking of the future and how you can help your country once peace returns."

Turning to Eddie, Archie shakes his hand. "Lovely to meet you old son, and kitten of course. Stay safe. I'm off to Barts to tidy up and tend to those in spiritual need."

"Thank you, Reverend," said Friedrich, shaking Archie's hand. "I hope the war ends soon."

The sergeant took the Luger and the magazine, verifying that the chamber was empty before putting them away in a drawer.

"Anything come in about that madwoman who escaped from Maxwell's Sanitarium during the air raid last night, Sarge?" asked Constable Lee.

"Catherine Exeter?" asked the sergeant. "No, no reports of any sightings yet. She can't hide forever, though. No ration card, no identity card...It's only a matter of time before she's caught."

Lee nodded and escorted Friedrich to the back.

Both Eddie and Archie recognized the sanitarium as the one where Anna worked.

Archie looks attentive. "Ah, Sergeant, is this some poor lost soul who might turn up at a hospital like Bart's? I could keep half an eye out for her in the course of my duties. Can you tell me what she looks like?"

Eddie crosses his fingers behind his back, thinking, "Please don't let it be that Anna lass from the shelter..."

"She's a short woman with dark hair," said the sergeant. "She's in her forties, but still beautiful." The description did not match Anna, who was far too young. "I don't know where she'd go, or we'd have already picked her up, but be careful if you do see her. She's dangerous. She's been locked up for ten years. Nearly killed a man."

Archie nods. "Right you are, well, stay safe gentlemen." With a cheery wave, he departs for Bart's.

"There's one other thing Sargeant. More grave, I'm afraid. On my patrol last night, I found a young lady murdered on Salmon Lane. Grim it was. Like an animal had been at 'er. Could be this escaped lunatic was involved. Thing is, the factory where the body was got destroyed in the raid."

Eddie shifts uncomfortably. "Looks like we've got a killer on the loose."

"Good heavens!" said the sergeant. "As if Jerry's bombs weren't bad enough. An animal, you say? Couldn't have been from the London Zoo. The animals were evacuated last year. What time did you find the body? Was there any identification on her?"

Archie looks anxious to be on his way but hesitates at the door. "I believe her name may have been Nell Murrow. Lady of the night I'm told."

"Yes, we're familiar with her," said the sergeant. "A bloody shame, that. It's good you told me, but I'd be careful about repeating it elsewhere. People are frightened enough as it is. It won't help morale if they think there's another Ripper out there."

Archie nods agreement. "London certainly has enough to worry about as it is. I hope her remains can be recovered soon though, everyone deserves a decent farewell."

Archie waves goodbye on that note and heads for the hallowed medical institution that is Bart's.

"Well sargeant, I'm going back to what's left of the warehouse. A few of the others from the shelter last night should be there already by now. Anyone from the station available to come with me? Keep it official like?"

Eddie realises the police might have enough on their hands. But a murder's a murder, prostitute or not.

At that moment, Constable Lee returned from locking up the German airman. "Ah, there you are," said the sergeant. "Go with the air raid warden. There's a woman been murdered, Nell Murrow. He found her body in a warehouse that got bombed out. See if you can find anything."

"Yes, Sergeant," said the constable, walking up to Eddie. "Lead the way."

Eddie leads the constable to the bombed-out warehouse.

"There should be some folks already there checking the ruins. Funny bunch. Not sure what to make of 'em. Seem alright though," says Eddie whilst wheeling along his bike.

"Don't know how we're going to get to the body. Could be a bit tricky. This here's Felix by the way. Drafted him into service last night."

"Cute little chap," said Constable Lee, petting the cat on the head. It purred contentedly.
