Character Thread

This is a tragic role playing story game about the women of the Special Operations Executive in World War 2 France, for two to five players. You have been captured by the Nazis, and are facing interrogation and death at their hands. Together as players you tell the stories of these brave women through their training, deployment, missions and eventual capture, and discover their lives through flashbacks. Playing cards are used to determine whether the focus of each scene is one of love, failure, success or death. A scene may directly involve other player characters, or it may involve other people who are played in the scene by other players around the table. The game ends with a final session where together you work out who lives, who dies, who tells their stories.

Character Thread

In this thread, we'll post our characters. The instructions for character creation are in the rules and are very simple. I'll post mine first, and then you can post yours in the same format. You will need to choose the following:
  • Name
  • Code Name (a French name, which will be used when undercover in France)
  • Strength
  • Weakness
  • Appearance
  • Background
  • Demeanor
You will also need a header for Supporting Characters, though it will be empty at first. We will edit this later, as characters are added (and possibly removed) when we play out our scenes. When characters are killed, they remain on the list, but we will use the "strike" tags to cross them off instead of tearing their cards in half, which we cannot do in this format.

A photograph of your character is optional.

Elizabeth Ingersoll

Post by Mr. Handy »

Image

Name: Elizabeth Ingersoll

Code Name: Florence

Strength: Medical Knowledge - Elizabeth has trained and worked as a nurse, and she has started attending medical school in order to become a doctor.

Weakness: Reluctant to Kill - Elizabeth has not yet taken the Hippocratic Oath, but her natural compassion and respect for human life makes it difficult for her to take one.

Appearance: Elizabeth is tall, with dark hair and green eyes. She tends to dress stylishly in the latest fashions, or at least the latest that she can get on the ration.

Background: Elizabeth was born and raised in London. She comes from a wealthy, upper class family, and thus she has learned to drive. She has been a nurse for a few years. When the war started in September 1939, she wanted to do her bit and volunteered to help the British Army. She accompanied the British Expeditionary Force to France, where she was immersed in the French language while treating both British and French soldiers. During the Phoney War there weren't as many injuries, though accidents still happened and disease and illness were a constant threat. She was home in London on leave when the Blitzkrieg began on May 10, 1940, and thus she did not need to evacuate with the BEF. She enrolled in medical school at University College in London, intending to become a doctor so that she could be better equipped to save lives. During the day she attended medical school, and at night she volunteered as an ambulance driver. An officer who was a recruiter for the SOE was attending a meeting in London one evening in the fall of 1940. It ran late, and the air raid sirens went off, but they kept working through it. After it wrapped up, he was on his way to the shelter when the bombs started falling, and he was injured in a blast. It was Elizabeth who picked him up in her ambulance to take him to the hospital. He was impressed by her coolness under fire and decided to recruit her into the SOE.

Demeanor: Elizabeth is very compassionate. It is her caring about others that motivates her more than anything. She is also very upbeat, always looking on the bright side of things and refusing to let the horrors of war get her down.

Supporting Characters:
Major Michael Warren, SOE recruiter/instructor, age 51
Edgar Cummings (Jacques), SOE operative, age 24
Valerie Dubois, Resistance leader, age 28
Marcel Dubois, Resistance fighter, Valerie's husband, age 30
Chantal Deschamps, Resistance fighter, age 19
Victor, SOE circuit leader, age 42
Walter Freitag, German soldier, age 18
Leutnant Friedrich Kohl, German officer, age 27

Name
Marion Adnet

Code Name (a French name, which will be used when undercover in France) Mathilde Rousseau

Strength She is French--her language, obviously, is perfect.

Weakness Hates using weapons, grenades, or dynamite/bombs.

Appearance See photograph above.

Background Her story is a very ordinary one, she would have been unexceptional but for a chance encounter that led to her recruitment into the S.O.E.--Her father is a painter who exhibits and sells most of his work in London, and throughout her childhood she visited England many times, learning English adequately. In 1940 her family escaped Paris, moving to a stately home belonging to one of her father's benefactors, Lord Ranelagh. His park adjoins Aston House near Stevenage, Hertfordshire--Production, packaging and dispatch,--where she met, in the local pub, trainees of the S.O.E. Marion Adnet, because of her Strength(above), was invited to an interview at Aston House where she was persuaded to join, she was by no means enthusiastic to do so and afraid as well.

Demeanour Serious. Artistic, but more arts and crafts than painting.

Supporting Characters Captain Flemimg, recruitment officer, S.O.E. / Pierre, resistance leader, Toulon. David, Paris

Name: Kate Murdoch

Code Name: Catherine

Strength: Explosives Expert - Kate's experience working in a munitions factory and her natural talent make her excellent at using explosives and timing when they detonate.

Weakness: Lousy Poker Face - Kate's face is an open book, and anyone who sees it will have a good idea what she's thinking or feeling.

Appearance: Kate is wiry and athletic, with flaming red hair and cat-like blue eyes. She tends to wear trousers rather than dresses or skirts.

Background: Kate is a young working-class woman from Inverness, Scotland. Her father was a soldier fighting in France in the last war, and he met her mother, a Frenchwoman, there. They married after the war, and she moved back to Scotland with him. Kate learned French, English, and Gaelic growing up, and she speaks all of them with equal fluency. After the war broke out, she went to work in a munitions factory, but she wished she could do more for the war effort. One day she saw a notice asking for both men and women fluent in French for unspecified war work, and she jumped at the opportunity.
