Track 10: Sympathy for the Devil

Somewhat distraught at missing out on a fascinating exchange of views, but interested in how his companion appears to be unseen, P nods to Otto.

“Otto, please show our displeasure and clobber this creature.”

This command is carried out.

Otto attempts to smash the creature, but, most unfortunately, trips over his own feet and lands on the floor with a mighty crash, unhurt save for his dignity.

"What in the name of He Below was that noise?" the creature inquires, in a state of confusion. "Heaven take it, it is of no matter."

While this is going on, Liz blesses the bullets in her carbine.

Using Consecrate Object. If I can only consecrate one bullet, it'll be the one in the chamber. If I can, I'll consecrate the entire magazine as well. Or if consecrating the carbine affects all bullets fired from it, I'll do that instead. I'm not sure how it's supposed to work.

It says an object up to the size of a carriage, so I guess the entire weapon would be OK. Take an "action" to do this.

What is it you want me to do for you? Zara thinks, figuring her patron can read her mind. I'll do it if you help us stop that thing.

I need the blood of your companions; not enough to cause them permanent harm, but sufficient for my purpose. Swear that you shall return to your home as quickly as possible when this affair is over, and arrange for this sacrifice, and I will aid you.

P rolls his eyes at Otto’s antics.

“No you clumsy oaf! Remember what I taught you - Queensbury rules!”

He puts up his fists to demonstrate.

Liz reloads and consecrates her carbine, along with the ammunition in it.

"If you swear you won't hurt them, I'll do it." The Patron can probably discern that Zara hopes this covers after taking their blood as well as during.

Nodding at P's command, Otto tries again.

Although he once again fails to strike the creature, which is a difficult target, it seems, due to its bizarre shape and way of moving, he manages to stay on his feet. The thing does not react to the attack in any way.

Liz reloads and consecrates her carbine, along with the ammunition in it.

This action causes the thing to back away to the furthest corner of the room.

Just when things were looking desperate, the creature vanishes, leaving behind only its victim, now little more than an empty shell, and a puddle of thick black liquid.

As the creature dissipates, P stops mid-remonstration with Otto. He blinks in surprise.

“Oh. The entity appears to have gone. Perhaps it was unable to maintain physical cohesion outside of its own dimension.”

Zara staggers back against the wall. "It's not that. It's... We need to talk soon. I'm sorry."

[Mr. Handy]

"I thought it had fled because it saw me placing a blessing on my carbine," says Liz, breathing a sigh of relief. "That would have hurt it like heaven if I had shot it. But it retreated first...we can talk later. First we need to redirect the coolant into the decontamination area. Those blobs are going to keep multiplying unless we put them on ice."

By this time, all the THRUSH agents are out of commission or have fled. Redirecting the reactor coolant into the decontamination area isn't the most difficult task in the world for scientifically-minded types, but it takes some time. Once this is done, the main control board flashes bright red letters on the situation screen, accompanied by the repetitive buzzing of an alarm.

COOLANT LEVEL DECREASING

This would seem to indicate that the planned diversion of the stuff is working, filling the decontamination room with the coolant as planned.

“Let’s hope this does the trick,” says P, looking around for signs of increasing blobbyness (that’s a scientific term, honest).

“If so, then what next?”

[Mr. Handy]

"Next we have to go make sure the blobs are destroyed, then reroute the coolant back to the reactor, and finally finish getting decontaminated," says Liz.

"Then we need to head back to the airship," Zara says. "Once everyone's safe."

The blare of klaxons fills the room, nearly deafening the occupants.
