Track 11: Spooky

The investigators make it safely to the airship. There is no sign that anybody else survived the disaster on Bear Island. The official story, from both sides of the Iron Curtain, is that it was an volcanic explosion. U.N.C.L.E. considers the situation closed. Some skeptics publish articles in the underground press, or make broadcasts on pirate radio stations, that "the Man is covering something up."

During the necessary period of rest and recreation after this tiring adventure, Zara grows increasingly agitated. With trembling hands, she produces a sketch of herself and the others seated around a large round table, upon which stands a single candle in the middle of a five-sided star. Each person has a dagger by his or her side, along with a small bowl.

Having made his own discreet enquiries into the nature of the facilities they recently had to evacuate, P spends the rest of his downtime examining the airship.

His curiosity remains unsated, however, and so he views Zara’s drawing with interest.

“Fascinating. You have a lot of explaining to do young lady. For whom are you required to collect our blood?”

"This looks like a standard occult ritual," says Liz. "The entity in question obviously wants our blood for some nefarious purpose. It's easily done, but I'm concerned that giving it our blood will give it some sort of power over us."

"Sometimes I draw things that are going to happen," Zara says to P. "Always heavy stuff, never anything good. That's how I met Liz - she'd heard about me, and came to Venice Beach to check me out. There was a guy killing girls - it was the first thing we went up against together, with Tony, and a couple of others. But there's this spirit too... I guess it's interested in what I can do, but I dunno why. I can always feel it there."

In response to Liz's observation, she adds, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have agreed. I just couldn't think of any other way we were doing get out of there. Maybe you should say no - it told me not to fail it, which sounds like it can't make you, or do anything to you if you refuse."

P ponders on this for a moment.

“I would like to converse with this entity; ask it its intentions.”

In response to this inquiry, Zara suddenly enters into what seems to be a trance, and alters the drawing so that a large black X appears on the image of P.

With much greater fierceness than before, the entity communicates the message DO NOT FAIL ME!
TAKE WHAT I NEED IF THEY WILL NOT GIVE IT FREELY! This is followed by a sudden, crippling pain in her head, causing her to collapse, as if it were the worst migraine imaginable, despite her invulnerability to normal diseases. This passes in less than
second, but cannot be forgotten.

The others then witness her let out a cry of pain and fall to the floor, but she seems to recover fully by the time they try to help her.

Liz rushes to help Zara, though she no longer needs it. "It appears that the entity does not wish to be questioned," she says. "While my knowledge of the paranormal can provide some temporary protection, we may in the end need to do as it wishes. It does, after all, have you as a hostage, Zara."

"Hmm, most disconcerting..."

Seemingly oblivious to Zara's plight, P is lost in his own thoughts.

"Of course the answer may lie in blocking out the malign psychic influence altogether... Perhaps some kind of dampening field could be erected around the girl's head? A helmet maybe? Yes, I'm sure I could turn my hand to that..."

"And I guess this means it can hear anything you say to me," Zara says weakly. "Well, let it hear this. I'm not going to ask you to go through with it."

With an unexpected change in tone, the entity communicates with Zara almost gently. DID I NOT SAY THAT NO HARM WOULD BEFALL THEM? NOR NEED THEY PERFORM THE ACTION THEMSELVES. MERELY APPROACH THEM WITH A BLADE AND STRIKE. THEY WILL NOT EVEN FEEL ANY PAIN, I SWEAR! I CAN BE MOST GRATEFUL TO THOSE WHO PERFORM SUCH SMALL SERVICES FOR ME. OR, I CAN BE MOST VENGEFUL TO THOSE WHO DO NOT.

Zara shakes her head. "And for the carrot, it's reminding me that it promised 'no harm would befall you.'" - her tone making it clear she's quoting. "I don't know what to do. I'm pretty sure it can't make you do anything. And obviously it knows anything I say and hear. So maybe I should spend the rest of the cruise locked away in the one of the cabins."

"A dampening field is a good idea," says Liz. "Maybe a hat would be less obtrusive than a helmet, not to mention more fashionable. Lining the inside of the hat with aluminium foil could act like a Faraday Cage, protecting Zara's head from electronic interference. But would this influence be stopped by it? My protection ritual should work too, but it's only a temporary measure. I could try to banish it as well, but that won't always work. More research and experimentation is clearly in order. Of course, the entity may have other means of projecting its influence. Do you know its name, by any chance?"

While these preparations are being made, the entity seems to have withdrawn for the moment. Zara receives no message, produces no arcane artwork, and suffers no headaches. All would seem to be well, were it not for a disturbing newspaper article in the Venice Evening Vanguard. It seems that a number of schoolchildren have been hospitalized with unexplained anemia. Some members of the local nonconformists are blaming it on pollution being dumped into the ocean.

"This could be the work of a vampire," says Liz. "There could be other explanations too, but we won't know until we investigate. We can start by visiting the children in hospital, examining and interviewing them."

P looks up from his work on Zara’s hat.

“A trip to Venice would be most stimulating, especially if you throw in some vampires.”

He chuckles to himself.

“I suppose stakes and garlic are in order. Hmm, there must be a scientific basis to such legends…”

"Being killed by a sharp bit of wood through the heart doesn't need that much explanation," Zara says drily. "I wonder if it's related to the spirt's demand."

After quickly pointing out to P that the Venice mentioned in the newspaper is the city of that name in California, and not the Italian original -- Zara's hometown, for that matter -- the investigators make their way to the only hospital in the area with a pediatric intensive care unit.

"May I help you?"

The receptionist at the main desk of the hospital is a very professional-looking woman of middle years. Not far away is a security guard, who keeps a close watch on everyone coming and going.

"Good day," says Liz with a smile. "I'm Dr. Liz North, of Cambridge University. My colleagues and I have heard about the anemia that is afflicting the children, and we'd like to lend our assistance and scientific expertise to help them."

After checking on her credentials, which are certainly impressive, Doctor North and her colleagues are introduced to a specialist in hematology, flown in from New England to consult on the case. Doctor Julia Hoffman is a serious, intense woman of middle years, whose only concession to fashion is a large, multicolored glass bauble she wears on a chain around her neck. She wastes little time on small talk, getting right to the point.

"I've never seen anything like this. There are no wounds, not even small ones, such as might be found on, for example, the throat. There is no sign of internal bleeding, no evidence of an autoimmune disorder, or some other way in which the red blood cells might be destroyed by the body itself. The staff here thought of pernicious anemia, of course, but injections of cyanocobalamin have been without effect. It's as if the children's blood were simply vanishing!

"Would you like to see the patients? I must warn you that they are very weak, and that the anemia has made them behave rather strangely."

“By all means lead on,” P responds, his interest immediately piqued.

As they proceed, he whispers to Otto: “don’t be afraid; nothing can hurt you here. Please keep your senses alert: if you see, hear or smell anything wrong, let me know.”

"Thank you, Dr. Hoffman," says Liz, who is far more devoted to fashion. She currently wears a maroon minidress, in addition to her usual jewelry. "It isn't what I had suspected then." From Julia's statement, it was obvious that she too had suspected a vampire. "Yes, let's go see the patients. Examining them closely may reveal more information, and if they are communicative, their own observations may be invaluable."

The pediatric intensive care ward is occupied by two little girls and one little boy. One of the girls is a blue-eyed blonde, the other is obviously of Asian ancestry. The boy is dark-skinned and has tightly curled hair. Obviously the disease has no preference for one ethnicity over another. All are confined to bed, due to the monitors that record their vital signs, and the intravenous lines that are currently transfusing whole blood into them. Despite this, they seem in good spirits.

Seeing Doctor Hoffman enter, the boy says "What's up, Doc?" in an artificially high voice and giggles. She glances at the visitors and whispers "If I had a nickel for every time he's said that, I could retire."

"I'd like you to meet some of my friends," she says to the children.

"Look at the funny man," the blonde girl says, pointing at Otto. The movement of her arm seems to be accomplished only with great difficulty, but it does not appear to change her mood. "I'm Susie, that's my best friend Ann Marie, and that silly boy is Petey. Are you the TV people?"

Shyly, Ann Marie takes some sheets of paper from the desk by her hospital bed. They depict the usual things you'd expect from young children; animals, houses, a smiling sun, and so on. Although definitely childish, they show signs of early artistic talent, in the use of balance and color. There are also purely abstract designs, of geometric shapes.

While this goes on, there are some sign of commotion just outside the intensive care ward.

"Oh, dear." Doctor Hoffman winces. "That reporter is here. He's a nuisance, but his father is on the board of the hospital, so they have to let him in."

A husky man in T-shirt and jeans wheels in a large television camera, followed by a young man in leisure suit and tie, carrying a microphone. At a hand signal from the cameraman, he speaks into the camera.

"Good morning. This is John Shade, your host. Welcome to another segment of "Local Mysteries," where we explore the strange and the unexplained. With me today is our old friend, Doctor Julia Hoffman, along with some of her colleagues. Why don't you folks introduce yourselves, and tell us what you found out about the Venice Vampire."

"That's got rid of them," says Liz. "One skill I've learned from being in academia is how to use a lot of words to say absolutely nothing. They could just air that footage without the audio, and their ratings would be fine. The camera loves me, and I'm sure the male viewers will too." She tries to think of what she knows about occult references to the legend of the Sandman.
The situation brings to mind the tale Der Sandmann (1816) by the German fantasist E. T. A. Hoffmann (no relation to the doctor, who spells her name differently.) Rather than the more benign versions of the legendary figure, who brings pleasant dreams, the character in that macabre tale is a sinister being. From an English translation:

He is a wicked man, who comes to children when they won't go to bed, and throws a handful of sand into their eyes, so that they start out bleeding from their heads. He puts their eyes in a bag and carries them to the crescent moon to feed his own children, who sit in the nest up there. They have crooked beaks like owls so that they can pick up the eyes of naughty human children.

P steps back, allowing the hospital staff to attend to the emergency.

The child said ‘there’: was the Sandman actually present? While not particularly attuned to the supernatural (least not without specialist equipment), the scans the ward for anything unusual, bidding Otto to do likewise.

“Something is making these children draw occult symbols and draining them of blood in the process,” he whispers to his companions.

The crisis passes as the transfusion of whole blood restores the children's vital signs, at least for the moment.

Doctor Hoffman does not seem entirely surprised by Liz's action.

"I've witnessed the psychosomatic effect of symbolic rituals before," she says. "The problem is, we can't keep these children confined to a small, protected area forever."

Attempt to resist exorcism with WIS 12d20

The mist-like entity does not appear to be effected in any way by the attempt at exorcism. If anything, it has grown large, more substantial, and redder in color, coming to form a vaguely humanoid shape. Extruding a finger-like protrusion from one of its limbs, it marks the wall with dark red letters.

“As it is, however, our options are reduced to fighting it or sating its appetite. Zara, if you like I could fetch the, erm, hat I’ve been working on; or we could simply roll up our sleeves and ask the good doctor to perform a blood letting.”

Perhaps given certain prior experiences, Doctor Hoffman does not seem entirely shocked by what has happened, nor by the willingness of the investigators to become blood donors, so to speak. (It remains to be seen if Zara and Otto will both agree to do so, particularly the latter.)

While the donation is being set up, the children make a nearly miraculous recovery, and are discharged from the hospital in good health, to be monitored closely at home.

As a standard amount of blood is taken from the two volunteer donors, the fog-like entity grows darker in color, and more nearly human in size and shape. As soon as each bag is filled, it vanishes, leaving only emptiness behind.

A little friendly persuasion, coupled with the willingness of the others to make the same sacrifice, convinces Otto to donate as well, with some obvious distaste.

One the process is completed, the misty figure becomes more sharply defined and solid. It is now clearly that of a large humanoid figure, pure white save for glowing red eyes. Grinning widely, the being , still vague enough to suggest a huge man wearing a snowsuit, walks (or possibly floats) to the nearest window and leaps through it, smashing the glass into countless shards, and running (or possibly flying) off in the direction of downtown. It is last heard shouting "Free! Free!"

A little later, screams are heard from the same direction, as Doctor Hoffman struggle to clean up the mess ands tend to the disturbed patients.

Liz also runs to the window to look outside. "Oh, bloody hell," she says. "It's not your fault, Zara. It's that entity that is responsible. Unfortunately, supernatural entities are always complicated, and often malevolent. A quick glance through the broken window reveals what appears to be a massive traffic accident, with several vehicles involved and a few people lying in the street motionless. Sirens scream in the distance, rising in pitch as they approach. An ambulance races out of the hospital's emergency department to tend to the badly injured. Many overlapping voices are heard, saying things lie "multiple traumas" and "triage." A few seconds later, an explosion fills the air, and a tower of flame rises into the sky from a nearby gas station.

That being is already causing all sorts of damage, and it shows no sign of stopping. Besides, if we let it get away now, we may have difficulty tracking it down later. The trail of destruction is still fresh. I tried banishing the Sandman earlier, but it was able to resist. I can still bless weapons or other objects, as I did with my carbine, which I still have. Perhaps we can also communicate with it. Maybe now that it's free, we can reason with it. It may be amenable to going back home."

P's equipment suggests that what appears to b e a physical being is in fact pure energy, of a particularly powerful nature. This may be further evidenced by the way in which streetlights flare brightly and then explode when it passes near them. For now, it pays no attention to the investigators and continues to create chaos.

“Clearly the absorption of blood has enabled the creature to convert the latent energy therein into electrical potential, as evidenced by its transmission into, and subsequent overloading of, the street lights,” postulates P.

“The fascinating vistas this opens up in the field of bio-electrical generation notwithstanding, a high enough resistive load should in theory siphon the entity of such energy, as one would discharge a capacitor.”

“Alternatively we could connect the energy source to ground and discharge to earth. Either way we would need a considerable amount of copper cable…”

“Hmm… perhaps the copper in one’s bloodstream is an important factor… Let’s us assume an average of 150 micrograms per deciliter, taking Otto into account…

Fortunately for the two scientists, Doctor Hoffman came to California with an extraordinarily advanced device. Amazingly, it weighs less that twenty pounds, and costs only several hundred dollars.

"They call it a 'programmable electronic calculator'," she explains. "Helps with all the tedious calculations."

This proves to be true. Its remarkable power to perform arithmetical calculations even faster than an abacus used by an expert (or for an 'electronic brain' the size of a building, for that matter) allow the investigators to determine that bringing the being in contact with conductive metal of the same mass as an average American automobile should drain its power. Notably, while engaged in its pranks, it is careful to avoid coming into contact with cars and other metal objects.

The question remains as to how this should be done.

"Many cars are already practically Faraday cages," says Liz, "unless of course they're open-topped or a window is open. The rubber tyres are natural insulators, so if a car is hit by an electrical discharge, it will go into the ground without harming the driver. This is why they say that if there's a lightning storm, you're safer staying in your car and waiting for it to pass than being outside. Although a modified diving suit would help in case the car is breached. The only other thing we've got to do is find a suitable car - and find someone reckless enough to drive it. I'm a fairly good driver, but I'm not the best." She looks around outside for one.

The two vehicles are simple enough to operate. The bakery van is full of extremely soft white bread and a wide variety of snack cakes, so there's not much room for anything else. The passenger seat and back seat of the Rolls are covered with ordinary cardboard boxes, also limiting the room. As one would expect, the van runs nosily, while the Rolls whispers like a dream.

Both Zara and P can tell that the hole goes down quite a long way, and that there's a dull amber glow at the bottom. There's no sign of the entity at the present time. A distant rumbling sound emerges from the pit, then slowly fades away; at the same time, it changes its apparent position, from the center of the pit to the side, and then, seemingly, moving away from it in the same direction, until the sound disappears entirely. A eerie silence follows; then, a few seconds later, the sound of many wings as a large flock of starlings flies away from a wooded area of the park at full speed, heading in the opposite direction from the pit. Simultaneously, there is he chittering of squirrels as they, too, flee the area.

"Sounds like it headed over in that direction," says Liz. "We'll need to get these vehicles moving again so we can go after it."

“I concur,” replies P. “Assuming I can extricate that blasted Rolls… Where the devil is Otto? He’ll help.”

"I think this one's had it," Zara says of the van.

While discussing the situation, the investigators see that, one by one, the trees in the area from which wildlife fled topple over with loud crashing sounds. With his mighty strength, Otto is able to pull the Rolls out of the ditch. It's the worse for wear, but drivable. With gas in the tank, the bread van is operable, but Zara's vehicle is out of commission, as she suspected. There's still the Bentley and the two convertibles.

Enough time has gone by for somebody to inform the authorities. Ambulances, firetrucks, and police cars show up, sirens blaring and lights flashing. The responders seem bewildered by the situation. Seeing that Otto is the only one around not currently inside a vehicle -- everybody else fled on foot -- they ask him "What in blazes is going on here?"

"Looks like we have to help Otto out," Liz says to P. "I'm the best at talking to people - particularly men - so I should probably take the lead here. We should couch what we say in scientific terms, so we can tell the truth without them understanding a thing we say. If they did understand it, they'd probably have us committed."

"Otto will be very glad of your assistance Dr. North," says P gratefully. "I will take to the wheel once more and try to catch the entity when it surfaces."

With a curt nod, the scientist clambers back into the Rolls - hopefully the creature won't give him the slip!

A combination of scientific knowledge and personal charm allow Liz to completely sway the responders to her side. Their general attitude is "OK, what can we do to help?"

More trees topple over, and water bursts from the ground, apparently the result of an underground pipe being broken open.

"Oh-oh," says one of the firefighters. "If this -- what did you call it, Doc? -- gets to the natural gas line, it could cause big trouble."

The cops are busy holding back a crowd of reporters and the curious. (Among the former is John Shade and his crew.) The ambulance workers are treating a few folks for minor injuries, mostly from falls and the like while fleeing the being. A couple of people can be heard saying things like "Hey! That's my car! Who's been messing with it?"

"This is John Shade, with a special report from Local Mysteries. Did three self-styled psychic investigators release a monster from Hell? Stay tuned!"

Zara will go with P, in the hopes that another vehicle will be available to grab at the destinaion.

"What you need to do first is evacuate the civilians and secure the perimeter," Liz tells the responders. "That includes the reporters. They're only putting themselves in danger by their presence here. Then we'll need to neutralise the entity by running into it at speed in a vehicle. The vehicle has to be completely enclosed, as there will be an electrical discharge. The rubber tyres will keep the vehicle grounded, so that the occupants will be unharmed. You have the authority to commandeer any vehicles we need." She then joins the others at the Rolls. "Let's get after it. Maybe one of us should drive."

“Quite so, let’s continue the hunt,” P replies. “I will stay behind the wheel if you like.”

"It's probably better if Zara drives instead," says Liz. "She had the most success behind the wheel."

“Considering my recent driving record, I cannot in good conscience disagree to that.”

Zara takes the wheel and heads in the apparent direction of the entity. We're still in the park, so she keeps an eye out for rough ground.

While the emergency personnel are getting the onlookers under control, Zara grabs the wheel of the Rolls.

With unerring skill, she drives the vehicle directly towards the point where the entity is heading, dodging trees and bushes with ease. Her excellent sense of direction allows her to reach the exact place where the thing is just about to emerge and . . .

ZAP!

With a sudden blaze of bright white light and a sound like thunder, it pops up and immediately vanishes. The silence that follows is almost eerie, compared to the former chaos. Zara feels a strange sense of being a vacuum that is going to be filled soon.

Meanwhile, there's a lot of cleanup to do, a lot of people to confront, and a few vehicles that are much the worst for wear.

“Capital driving Zara; the entity appears to be neutralised,” enthuses P, loosening his white-knuckle grip on the sides of the passenger seat and straightening his tie.

“Now, I suggest we abandon ship, collect Otto and make ourselves scarce.”

"Well done, Zara!" cheers Liz. "I am in part responsible for the damage to the vehicles. It's only fair that I pay to compensate their owners. I can certainly afford it."
