Ch.14b. A Letter From a Friend (Jerry & William)

"Good thing we brought rope," says William, taking his out and looking for a place to tie it.

[Bullfrog]

"Can you hear that? A woman's voice, or something like it..." Jerry stands still and silent, trying to ascertain where the cry came from; he wasn't sure who else could have come down here, but Winscott might not have been the only one in danger.

Jerry stood and listened but the cry wasn’t repeated and he couldn’t tell from which way it had come.

Looking around, William could see there was no shortage of stalagmites that could be used to anchor his rope.

"I heard," says William, tying the rope off to a sturdy stalagmite, testing it, and lowering it. "She's got to be somewhere ahead of us, or we'd have seen her."

Thanks to his missing fingers, Jerry can't get a good grip on the rope.

William is not good at climbing ropes. He always dreaded this in physical education.

Jerry tried climbing down but with an impaired grip, slipped and fell. William was making better progress when a gunshot went off in the direction from they’d come and he fell to the floor!

Jerry mumbles a half-coherent string of colorful expletives as he picks himself up off the floor, aiming his gun wildly around the tunnel.
"Whoever fired that off, you better explain yourself real soon!"

[Mr. Handy]

William flattens himself against the sheer wall they had just hastily descended, so that nobody above can see him without leaning over the top, and holds his shotgun ready. "Mr. Winscott, is that you?" he calls. "It's us, hold your fire!"

Jerry's never been much of a listening type.

William has been deafened by the gunshot.

There was nothing to be heard from back the way they came.

"I'm hoping that's him," whispers William. "If it's not, whoever it is can pull up the rope and trap us down here."

No further sounds emerged from the corridor above their heads.

While sheltered in the shadow of the wall, William tries to treat his injury, but without much luck.

"We should stay here for a bit, see if they come to us. If it's just some curious stranger, we could rope them into helping us find Winscott. If they're up to no good-" Jerry raises up his gun and shakes it a bit for emphasis. "Then it's two-on-one."

[Mr. Handy]

William nods, doing an excellent job patching up Jerry. "Can you see if you can do anything for my injury while we wait?" he asks. "I don't want to wait too long, though. There was a woman screaming ahead of us somewhere, and I don't know how long she has."
