"See what I mean? Worst case scenario, we'll probably be held overnight if we don't do anything and stay here." Thomas says to William. "Not that I like the idea of becoming a fugitive..."

"Like I said," says William, "I don't see that we have much choice. Legally, we have the right to leave unless he places us under arrest. However, in this parish, the Sheriff is the law. There's nothing stopping him arresting us if we were to try to leave."

Lawrence & Georgie*,It was past twilight and the air was alive with chirruping of insects. The Sheriff and the rest had been in the house for a quarter of an hour or more when the lights of a couple of cars could be seen approaching from the coastward road. They slowed as they approached the entrance to the track, then turned towards the house, their headlights shining brightly before them. Howard | Thomas | William,The Sheriff put the phone down and turned to look at the young men sat in the front room. The front room was lit but the hallway wasn’t. Half in shadow, he tucked his fingers in his belt as he stood but he made no effort to join them. [color=#800040]”Help is on its way,”[/color] he said.

"What kind of help?" asks William.

Howard | Thomas | William,[color=#800040]”Just help,”[/color] replied the Sheriff enigmatically, as car noise could be heard on the track outside and the light from headlamps began to spill into the room.

Howard swallows, his mouth dry. This situation doesn't look too good. He scans the room to see if there is anything which could be used as a weapon.

"I ain't liking the looks of this. I might go check in on the others." Lawrence muttered, trying to get a better look at the approaching cars.

Thomas stands up and takes a few steps towards the hallway. "What's going to happen now? Are you planning on searching for the killer?" he asks the Sheriff.

"Can't tell if those are police or not. What do you reckon, Georgie?" Lawrence states, squinting to get a better look, but to no avail.

Howard also stands up, and attempts to move behind Thomas so that the Sheriff won't see him.

William stands as well. "Do you have any suspects?" he asks.

The second car in line swerved as it approached them, presumably to miss something in the road and its headlights illuminated the side of the car in front. Howard | Thomas | William,As they got closer, they could see the Sheriff was sweating profusely and he looked glassy-eyed. He put a shaking hand on his gun, [color=#800040]”I think that’s far enough, boys...”[/color] he slurred.

"Sit tight, and don't draw any attention to yourself." Lawrence advises Georgie before walking over to the hotel's front door and giving it a knock.

"It's all right," says William, remaining where he is. "We're not going anywhere. Are you feeling all right?"
