As mentioned in the preamble, investigators will be be friends of the missing James Frazer.

We’ll be using 6th edition rules with classic era careers. I’ll add more details later but if you have any questions, just ask.

I'm thinking of playing a lawyer.

What is the exact year, and where does the scenario take place?

We’ll be starting in Arkham in late October 1929. A lawyer should be fine, as long as you can link him to James.

Please post your characters here on this thread.

Here is some of the information you'll need for making your character. The easiest way will be to use the Dholes House character generator (make sure you use the 6th edition classic era generator) here: https://www.dholeshouse.org/Default

Don't forget, your character is a friend James Frazer, so please bear that in mind when creating your character. James is a 19 year old, first-year student at Miskatonic University, and the son of the banker, Gerald Fraser, a member of a notable Arkham banking family.

If you want to do it the old fashioned way...

Character creation rules

STR, CON, POW, DEX, and APP are rolled using 3D6, while EDU is rolled using 3D6+3, and INT and SIZ are determined by rolling 2D6+6. Dice rolls are made and distributed as you desire.

Minimum age is EDU+6 years.

Starting at age 40, an investigator loses 1 point from STR, CON, DEX, or APP for every 10 years of age. However, an older investigator gains 1 point of EDU for every additional 10 years of age, starting at age 30.

INTx5 for Idea; POWx5 for Luck; EDUx5 for Know. Sanity = POWx5; Hit Points = CON+SIZ/2 rounding up any fraction; Magic Points = POW.

STR+SIZ = Damage Bonus
2 to 12 = -1D6
13 to 16 = -1D4
17 to 24 = None
25 to 32 = +1D4
33 to 40 = +1D6

I am thinking of an artist; a painter, probably employed in advertising. I will try and start on the character tonight.

What age range are we looking at? And which college did they attend?

My character could be a friend of the family. Perhaps he represents Gerald in business matters and got to know the family that way.

James was educated up to the age of 18 at Arkham High School, with some additional private tutoring. He is now studying Business & Economics at the School of Law and Business at the Miskatonic University.

James is 19 (in his first year at university) and I envisaged his friends to be of a similar age. That said, an older family friend would also work, although I wouldn’t have thought that they would be a generation apart i.e. not more than 20 years older.

Mr Handy & Honeydog - happy with a lawyer and an artist.

Peper757 & Mallard - have you any thoughts about your characters?

Well, perhaps a business student too but someone whose interest in painting takes precedence over studies, and who is thinking about trying to make a living with his talent.

I can’t find reference to Miskatonic University having an art faculty so a business student with art as a hobby/potential future career path would work best.

I’m considering an up and coming baseball player who currently attends university with James. Some quick research suggests their are strong precedents for this in the 1920s, where of course baseball was huge. I’m doing some more research to make sure I get this right, first. Any thoughts?

The was an explosion of sports fellowships post-World War One in America, so your character could be a be enrolled under such terms. Although the MU Is predominantly a serious academic institution, that’s not to say that they might not have followed suit. Sports fellowship students were often enrolled based upon their sporting - as opposed to acedemic - prowess, however ... :)

The university’s baseball team is the Badgers (as are all the other male teams at MU).

Go, Go, Go! Dig, Dig, Dig! Go, Go, Go! B-A-D-G-E-R-S...... TEAM! (The successful -and only - entry for the 1920s team cheer competition, now adopted as the official MU cheer for its sports teams).

This is mine, hope it's okay!

Name: Howard King
Howard King.jpg
Artist (Painter), Student
Education: Business & Administration Sophomore, Miskatonic University
Place of Birth: Phoenix, Arizona
Age: 21

Howard is a business sophomore but lacks the passion for his chosen subject, as he was forced into it by his father with the intention of him carrying on the family business. Additionally, he has little academic aptitude. Instead he dreams of being a painter and spends much of his time creating abstract works. He is quite talented though, and may have a future if he’s able to make the most of the opportunities which might present themselves. However, unless he pays more attention to his grades, he is likely to find himself on his way home to Arizona in disgrace, and destined to spend a lifetime in what he sees as drudgery. He is something of a bohemian, and can often be found at the Desolate Highway Cafe in Arkham. He counts James Frazer as a friend, and would be motivated to help him if James is in trouble.

He is big and strong but clumsy. He is not a particularly gregarious character, and often needs the guidance of others to make decisions. His preoccupation with his art makes him somewhat single-minded, and to be honest, a trifle boring.

Appearance & Personality: William Preston is a man of average build, with short dark hair. While he takes the law and his profession seriously, he is known to have a sense of humor outside of work. William chose to become a lawyer because he wanted to help people. He is able to understand the arcane secrets of the law better than most, navigating through precedent, finding loopholes, and crafting arguments to win over people.

Background: William grew up in Boston, where he excelled in his studies, and he went to Miskatonic University, where he continued to do so. It was there that he met Amelia, a fellow student. They fell in love, and they were married in 1922 shortly after they both graduated. William continued his studies in law school, earning his degree in 1925 and passing the Bar exam months later. One of his clients is Gerald Frazer, whom he helps with business matters, having a good head for economics himself. He is a friend of Gerald's family and has taken an interest in guiding young James, who attends his alma mater.

Appearance & Personality: Rebellious and carefree but careful not to further displease his father, Bernie is a conflicted sole, which comes across in his personality - sometimes the life of the party and other times introverted and aloof. He is obviously intelligent but pays only enough attention to his academic studies for him to scrape by, with his true passions being Baseball and motorbikes.

When not in a baseball Jersey Bernie is nearly always dressed in to ride his motorcycle, a Scott Flying Squirrell, wearing a brown Aeromarine leather jacket jacket and baggy cap.

Background: Bernie was born and raised in Arkham, part of a wealthy family but Bernie has always been somewhat of a ‘black sheep’, rebelling against the path his father has envisaged from him. Bernie had always loved sports and has a natural affinity for them, his particular passion being for baseball - again, something his family places no stock in. His father is a strict man and after an incident involving Bernie, the local police and a several bottles of contraband whiskey he had reached the end of his fathers patience. A compromise was reached where Bernie agreed to attend the Miskatonic School of Business and Law, as his father desired, but under a sports scholarship programme, to allow Bernie to continue playing ball.

Now, for a bit 'o background knowledge:

Lawrence's family came from some tiny hick town on the coast of Massachusets; nobody seemed to remember its name. The Gilman family met with great success in Arkham (some say they sold large amounts of gold, but that's just a rumor..), and soon befriended the Frazer family. Years later. Lawrence himself was a friend of James. He went into agriculture (with good success), but recently suffered from a rather bad infection from a tractor accident back on the farm. He occasionally carries a pistol (GM's choice if Lawrence has it with him during the scenario) on his person, mostly for self-defense (and occasionally snakes, but not often. This is up north, snakes aren't exactly common.)
This is draft #1. If you've got any criticisms, go ahead.

Your INT seems high for a farmer (not disparaging any farmers here), given that your CON is only average. If Larry is the strapping outdoors type, you might want to swap them over.

Make your case for why you would be carrying a gun, and I’ll consider it.

No offence, but I would say education should be the stat lowered.
Edit: I though he had a CON of 6. 9 isn't too bad. As for the case for the gun, the lad's friend disappeared, and he suspects kidnappers. Also, if its of any importance to know, the gun will be a revolver or derringer.

He went into agriculture with good success. He occasionally carries a pistol on his person, mostly for self-defense and occasionally snakes.

Here it is, finished.

Appearance & Personality: Tall, thin and severe-looking with black hair cut in a sharp Eton Crop. Speaks with a cultured Bostonian accent. A spinster and something of a 'bluestocking', she can seem quite aloof when first encountered. Ivy is intelligent, has a dry and laconic sense of humour and is always ready with a withering put-down. Thin-skinned and easily irritated, she does not suffer fools gladly and is formidable when roused. Friendship is not something that comes easy to her but she values professionalism and hard work. She is also very shrewd, having learned to read people and spot subtle signs in order to anticipate her client's needs.

Background: 'Poison' Ivy, as she is known to her colleagues, hails from an ancient Bostonian family that can trace it's ancestors back to some of the first English settlers in America.

Brought up in the stuffy, hidebound and 'old money' atmosphere of New England's elite, this academically gifted and headstrong woman caused a minor scandal when she eschewed the traditional life of the debutante. On her 21st birthday she announced to her horrified parents that she had grown bored with her life of easy privilege and had decided to 'stop shilly-shallying about on a horse all day and do something constructive instead.'

Deaf to all entreaties and threats of disinheritance she embarked on a series of secretarial jobs; her level-headed attitude, no-nonsense personality and witheringly dry wit more than compensating for her lack of vocational training. By the time her family's fortune was squandered on a series of bad investments, her career was such that she could support herself financially.

By the mid 1920s she had secured employment in Portland, Maine as a clerical assistant to the city's police force, catering mainly for the investigative bureau. Unable to stay behind her desk for long, she has a reputation for overstepping the mark and getting involved in interesting cases. Her assistance has earned her the respect of many a detective, while those that try to clip her wings soon get the sharp end of her tongue and discover exactly why she's earned her nickname!

Bio: Alexander was born in 1898 to an upper middle class Bostonian family. Both athletic and bright, he received good grades and boxed for a time for his high school and collegiate teams. He attended Boston University and majored in Law with a minor in Psychology. Before he could finish his studies however WW1 broke out, and despite his family's opposition he left school to fight in it. He served honorably on the Western Front until the war's end, where upon he resumed his studies and finished them. Utterly bored with law and preferring a job where he felt he could really make a difference, he became a police officer in Arkham, serving with quiet distinction for the next decade. Nowadays he's a police detective, one of the youngest ever, and continues to do his job and try to keep the city safe.

Alex is fairly straight laced, refusing to even engage in illegal activities such as drinking or gambling. To some he's morally upstanding; to many others, he's a scold. He's fairly attractive and is being given increasing pressure from his family to settle down, but hasn't found the right woman yet. Being a represed homosexual, he likely never will, but is considering marrying a local girl and hoping one day he'll fall in love with her.

Although he followed in the footsteps of most local lads with an apprenticeship in the industry after leaving school, this intelligent and inquisitive guy was determined to improve his lot by enrolling in night school and later the Open University.

Suitably qualified, he dreamed of becoming a successful writer, beginning his quest by embarking on a career in journalism. Working his way through a number of West Midlands periodicals, he eventually drifted south, finding employment a reporter for the Brichester Gazette.

While this has honed his skills as a photojournalist, he is fed up of reporting on fetes, pub concerts and working men’s clubs. He lives in hope of finding that big exclusive that will finally make him a household name in the literary world.

Background:

'Father Joe', as he is known, is a gruff, tough and no-nonsense man of the cloth. His large and intimidating stature, which belies his religious vocation, is amplified by a habitually stern and stony expression. That is, however, until he steps down from the pulpit and treats himself to a whiskey, when his smile becomes roguish and his eyes sparkle mischievously.

Joe's physique is shaped by a rough childhood in rural Ireland: a stereotypically brutish father and a family crushed by poverty. Young Joe ran with criminals and bandits, acting as look-out, messenger or errand boy for hard and desperate men.

It took several brushes with the law and the death of his father to persuade Joe to turn his back on violence and look to his educational and spiritual needs. Taken in hand by a local priest, he was led, reluctantly at first, into a local Catholic school. Seizing the opportunity, he quickly took the 'book learning' and also began to hear the call of The Lord, joining a seminary.

Working hard, Joe eventually earned the necessary qualifications and in due course took holy orders. Freshly ordained as a Catholic priest, he set about his duties in his typical brusque, no-nonsense manner. Sent to the USA, he earned the respect of hard-bitten immigrants of New York by setting up gymnasiums and boxing clubs as well as taking mass and confession.

When the USA joined the Great War, he immediately volunteered for service, following the young lads in his care over to France as an army chaplain. The things he has seen have tested his faith to the limit. His job as padre brings him into contact with miracles and tragedies alike on a daily basis: one keeping his demons away and the other drawing them nearer.

Background: Born in 1903 as the oldest son in a family of Arkham farmers, Jeremiah knew from an early age that he wanted a different life; the work was hard, the house was small, and his father was a mean old drunk who loved to fritter the family money away on booze.

He ran away at age nineteen, making a living on petty crime out of desperation; Jeremiah, now calling himself Jerry, picked pockets, robbed houses, and even held up a store once, although he barely got away with the last one. He didn't find his niche until a few years later, when he had eventually drifted down to the seedy side of Atlantic City; Jerry was paid a handsome (by his rather poor standards at the time) sum to burn down a building so the owner could collect an insurance payout, and he did a fine job, even making it look like the fire was the result of some faulty wiring.

He did such a fine job, in fact, that someone else came to him with a similar offer. And another. And another. Needless to say, a lot of people were collecting fire insurance money for the next few years. A few months ago, though, a job went bad, really bad. The house had a gas leak, unbeknownst to everyone, and when Jerry tried to light up the building, it went up in flames before he could get out. He barely managed to survive the fire, leaving the hospital with a burn-scarred face and a few missing fingers on his left hand, and when the police came around to ask Jerry some questions, rightfully suspecting arson, he managed to weave a story about how he was just a good Samaritan who had tried to enter the burning building, believing it to still be occupied by people in need of rescue.

The lie managed to hold off suspicion for the time being, but Jerry knew his house-burning days may have been over; this, combined with learning of his brother Lawrence's recent commitment to Arkham Sanitarium, drove Jerry to scrape together all the money he could to move back to his hometown in search of an honest job and answers about what happened to his brother.
