Thinking about when players are likely to post, whereabouts in the world do you live? I’m in the UK so will be online from around 8.00 until 12.00 GMT.

I can post anytime that I have time and when I'm awake. I'm usually awake, but lately I don't have so much time. But I can probably post every day. I'm 8 or 9 hours after the UK.

I'm in the Eastern U.S. time zone, which is usually five hours earlier than the UK, though until Daylight Savings Time ends in early November I think it's only four. During the week I can usually only get online at night, unless I'm off from work, from around 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM my time (so 1 or 2 AM to 5 or 6 AM in the UK). On weekends I can sometimes get online periodically throughout the day.

Hi Mallard, that’s fine. We’ll try and get character generation sorted out in the next week then we can make a start.

Have you played Call of Cthulhu before?

Yes - Very familiar with CoC. Looking forward to getting started! I hope to have my character submitted on Monday as I get home in the morning and don’t have work.

That’s fine. I should be seeing Peper757 tomorrow so I’ll chase him up for his character.

I’m off next week, albeit helping my parents move house, so we should be able to make a start then.

Hi all,

We have two completed characters and I spoke to Peper757 last night and he just needs to complete his character description and he’ll be ready. Bullfrog has also asked to join so I’ve asked him to prep a character. Mallard - how are you getting on with your character?

I’m helping my folks move this week so, subject to everyone being ready, I think we should be ready to start next weekend.

In the interests of transparency, Peper757 is my eldest lad, but don’t worry, I’ll have the same cavalier interest in his hit points/sanity as everyone else’s... ;)

So, about when is the game going to start?

Re: OOC Chat

Posted: Sat Oct 13, 2018 4:00 pm
by Philulhu
We are underway, but please read this before you start posting.

In terms of formatting:

Investigator’s names (others & your own) should be in bold
Speech in coloured text (try to choose a different colour for your investigator)
Thoughts in green, italic text.

If you want to attempt a dice roll, I’m happy for you to do so as that should speed up play. Please explain what you are trying to do and show your roll using the OOC button (see https://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/vi ... 318&t=5318 for more info). Be aware that a successful roll does not automatically mean that you have succeeded in what you are attempting to do, as the outcome could be affected by initiative, NPC’s actions, etc.

Record a successful roll with an asterisk on your character sheet. At the end of the investigation, you can roll to see if that skill has advanced.

Any questions, please ask.

If you received an update for the Nosey Neighbour thread and wondering where it went, I moved it back to the Miss Livingstone... thread. I thought you were separating again but then realised Bernie planned to hang around after you had spoken to the neighbour, not before.

Hi everyone, I’m going to have to take a break from the game for a little while. My dad is seriously ill and I need to focus on him in the coming days.

Sorry for the delay and I’ll pick the game up again when I can.

Hi all,

Thanks for taking part in The Interlude. Without giving too much away it’s part of a story arc that I’m trying to build for future investigations.

I’ve drafted out a framework for another investigation which I’m planning to run. I know how it starts and the rough direction of travel but I need to pull together a bit more information so that the story has some logistical consistency, so if you’re up for something home+brewed, then we can give that a go if you’re interested?

Cheers, Phil.

They’ve just returned from the hotel so you could come back in now: https://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/vi ... t=100#wrap

Alternatively, you could drop back in once they’ve decided on a plan of action.

Hi Bullfrog - welcome back.

Briefly, Georgie (Emily’s brother) arrived, having tracked you down. He too is looking for James.

William went to the hospital with Oscar. The rest of waited for his return. Hours later, he came back with a Sheriff Digne in tow. Unhappy about news of a dead body and seeing all of you toting rifles around, the Sheriff ordered them locked in the trunk of Georgie’s car and left Georgie and Lawrence to watch over them, while he went into the house with William, Thomas & Howard.

Lawrence’s adventure continues over in the main thread...

Brophy is a very fun, but still completely despicable, character; I like how we just call him by his last name, since we already have a William in the party.

Here's a question for everyone:

What have been your favorite moments in this campaign?

Re: OOC Chat

Posted: Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:16 am
by Mr. Handy
I've really enjoyed traveling to 1973. It reminds me of Life on Mars, and I've noticed the occasional reference (there was a scene where they opened a Watney's Party Seven with a screwdriver, for instance). Of course, Philulhu was in my game Space Oddity, which was heavily inspired by it.

The 1973 trip has been one of my favorite parts, as well. I wonder what's in store for the investigators once they return to 1930; I imagine they'll be paying a visit to Maine.

I'll tell you what I think would be very cool: an epilogue to the campaign where the 1930 gang, now old men, pay another visit to Brichester.

Lawrence Gilman faces his greatest obstacle yet: joint pain.

Re: OOC Chat

Posted: Mon Aug 23, 2021 4:39 am
by Silver Priest
Honestly: Ivy getting kicked by the horse.

I also like the time travel plot, and Brophy in general, he's in that sweet spot of villainy where you both loathe him yet also find him entertaining. I also enjoyed the part before I joined where the party ended up stuck in the middle of the feud between the Brophy's and the Yig cult down in Louisiana.

Lol the horse incident was certainly interesting!

I’ve only been in the game for five minutes, but I love playing spiky characters like Ivy.

As keeper, the best bit hands down is logging on in the morning and seeing your updates so I know you’re still with me. We’ve seen a few games having to take a break recently, so I’m pleased we’re all still here :)

I did like the horse incident (although was concerned I may have killed Ivy!) and I enjoyed researching & writing about the Louisiana journey, although I’m not sure it came off the way I’d expected (more to do with how I’d written it than anything the players did). The current story was inspired by me wanting to explore a different era and choosing one that I had at least some familiarity with (having grown up in the UK in the 1970s). It isn’t really drawn from Life on Mars (although I did rely on that for the police station scene, somewhat). And Mr Handy, sorry - I think I’m long overdue an update for your game… :o

As for the future, we’ll have to see… ;)

Personally, I've had a lot of fun refining Lawrence into a more defined, vengeful, possibly psychotic character. He's evolved with my writing skill over time.

Re: OOC Chat

by Mr. Handy
That's okay. I would like to pick up Space Oddity from where we left it if I can round up players and find the time. I think the last post was made in 2014. It started in 2009, so it had a good long run, and we'd gotten pretty far. I recently rewatched Life on Mars, which did make me recall the game and some of the similar lines I had used.

Re: OOC Chat

Yeah, so will I. ;) Except to go back and look at specific scenes I wanted to reread, I haven't really looked at it in seven years. It'll probably be a while before I can get myself up to speed and ready to continue, hopefully also with new players.

A bunch of them have been abandoned, but there are some that are simply on hold because replacement players are needed.

Crazy that you had a game going for five years, though. This one's been going for what, two or three?

Re: OOC Chat

Posted: Sun Aug 29, 2021 2:10 am
by Mr. Handy
Yeah. It's even crazier that the original run of Zombie Apocalypse was running for ten years (each chapter, and there were seven, is about the length of a regular-length scenario), and my Doctor Who/Call of Cthulhu campaign is still running after over eleven years, currently early in its sixth adventure.

Re: OOC Chat

Eleven years? That's worthy of a comedic spit-take. That's more than half my life, though I'm probably one of the younger members of the forum.

Let me add my usual plug that Zombie Apocalypse is a great deal of fun. I highly recommend you check it out, Mr.Handy does amazing work with it.

I think my longest game was a Vampire campaign that ran about 6 years and took my character from 1066 up to 1800 something. Ended prematurely, it was supposed to go to modern day.

Servants was written to be a one-shot that could be played in a single session. It’s fair to say we’ve extended it quite a bit (even allowing for the PbF format) 🙂

I think the whole RPG sector had a big shot in the arm with lockdown but now life is starting to get back to normal (for some of us, at least), the usual time restraints are starting to bite.

Re: OOC Chat

I know the original Servants is a published module. I've never read it, but am impressed with how you expanded it. You should change some of the names and try to get it published. ;)

I actually did read Servants once, though I didn't really remember much of it. Your expansions on it have been amazing, though, especially the Louisiana excursion; the climax of that one is possibly my favorite RPG moment I've ever experienced.

Re: OOC Chat

by Mr. Handy
Thanks, Silver Priest! Zombie Apocalypse could sure use some new players as I prepare to start Chapter 2. I've actually had less time since the lockdown, not more, which is one reason why I haven't yet found the time to get it rolling.

That Vampire campaign sounds awesome! Too bad it never caught up to the present.

I’m pleased to hear it :D

I did look at writing it up but obviously couldn’t use the Brophys and I think it’s the original scenario which makes it work - it brings the investigators together and gives them a reason to keep going in order to avenge their friend’s death. Without that starting point, it wouldn’t had the same coherence.

I’ve also played a bit fast & loose with some elements of the rules to benefit the story, as well as made up bits on the fly about Arkham and Brichester, which I’d need to check against published material to make sure they tallied. There’s a certain amount of leeway when you’re doing your own thing that wouldn’t stand up to scrutiny if published ‘as-is’ ;)

He was only a temporary, but you still made him pretty likeable. And probably the only sane person in the party, really.

At least we'll get to see what Ivy gets up to, I suppose, once this "sub-optimal" situation resolves itself.

Re: OOC Chat

It’s cool :)
It’s been an interesting experience playing Sean: a character who really should’ve just run away from all this madness at the start. But that wouldn’t be very interesting as a player, so striking the right balance was a challenge.
In the end he was literally forced at gunpoint to participate!

Re: OOC Chat

And so another chapter ends, with somehow only a single party fatality. Pour one out for Sean, who will not be writing an article about the crazy Americans he hung out with for a while.

That was a beautifully ironic end for the fiend. In other news, good old Larry Gilman is probably going to end up developing pyromania someday, once he inevitably is stricken with indefinite insanity.

Yeah, Sean was unlucky. By the way, it wasn’t Brophy who changed his appearance, it was the librarian. She was an ancestor of the witch that Brophy had brought to grief the previous century and the spirit of her ancestor lived on.

Bullfrog - I guess for Lawrence it’s him looking around and seeing things that aren’t there. It could have been the snake god he saw in Louisiana or the creatures from the train that he now sees in the shadows or out of the corner of the his eye. He won’t be sure what’s real and what isn’t, and will be worried that these things have been there all along but somehow he never saw them before…

Assuming that you’re happy to continue with our investigations after this one wraps up, I’m at a bit quandary as what to do next. I have a vague outline of an idea (no spoilers at this stage) but I’m concerned that it’s going over similar ground as to what we’ve already covered.

Thanks :)

I can’t take credit for making this up, as this is a published scenario (albeit not a Call of Cthulhu one). Like most scenarios though, it does just provide the framework - all the other stuff like the dialogue, etc. is written by me.

As for what happens next, how can there be a climax? I mean you saw Brophy die! He burned to death, didn’t he? Didn’t he? :o

Is anyone else having problems with the notifications? Mine have just arrived for the updates overnight.

Yeah, I think I missed a few. Luckily I try to keep a weather eye out for new posts.

I’ve just had another arrive for an update two days ago…

Like you, I keep an eye on the site, rather than just wait for emails, but there’s obviously an issue somewhere.

I've never gotten any notifications, but I never set them. I always just check the board manually, looking at the timestamps of the last post in each forum.

Hi all,

I’m planning to start (No) Southern Comfort this weekend. I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise to hear that we’ll be heading back to Louisiana.

Ivy, Lawrence and William will all have spent some institutional time recovering from their experiences (I’ll confirm the SAN benefits of your stays when I get the chance). Five months will have elapsed before we pick up the story again, so what has happened to your characters in the meantime?

Alex will have been expected back at work within days, I’d imagine. How has he coped?

Ivy, Lawrence and William will have spent a good deal of time in institutions in the intervening time. Lawrence’s will be state-run; Ivy and William are more likely to have spent time in private establishments where the level of care is better (and less experimental).

Perhaps you’d like to say how your recovery has gone?

Can Alex have attended therapy? He'd probably selectively lie to the therapist and pass the attacks off as wild apes, venting to him how he regrets being unable to save Jerry or the policemen.

He'd also practice his firearms, realizing that that saved his life(and explaining why his skill is now well over 80!) And look into buying something with more power. He'd also be sure to visit the old widow neighbor and have a dinner or two with her, figuring she'd appreciate the company.

He also makes an effort to visit Ivy whenever he can.

Other than that, he tries to go back to being a boring old mundane policeman, and reasons that this time his experiences with the unnatural are surely done with.

William is glad for the chance to recover, and he still has more wealth than most people these days, so he can afford to pay for it and take some time off from work. He embraces therapy fully and takes full advantage of its benefits, hoping never again to see anything weird. The institution's staff seem pleased with his progress.

Ivy’s stay in the sanitarium will be insufferable; both for her and for the staff! Angry, embarrassed and frightened about what happened to her, her recovery will be marked with brittleness, bitterness and aggressive defence.

But nonetheless she will improve, forcing herself to face up to the horrors she’s witnessed and steeling herself to endure the mundane world that had been lain across terrible reality like a cheap veneer.

Eventually she returns to her job with the Arkham PD (her exact role increasingly loosely-defined), glowering fiercely at anyone who dares refer to her ‘breakdown’.

The only person she seems to have any time for is Alex. While they happen upon each other rarely, they share a common, blood-soaked bond. Whispers of some ill-matched romance may susserate through the precinct, but it is nothing so tawdry. It is Alex she seeks out when she buys a handgun, vowing never to feel so defenceless ever again.

Lawrence's stay at the sanitarium is remarkable in how unremarkable it is; he always does as told and seems to make excellent progress, if only because of his insistence on returning to the outside world as quickly as possible.

His return to the family farm is one without celebration, as one of the first things he has to do is arrange his own brother's funeral; it is a small service, attended only by the deceased's few friends and family, and presence of the shady-looking visitors raise no shortage of rumors among the neighbors. Lawrence becomes a figure of rumor, himself; "The Gilman boy's gone strange," one neighbor recounts, "always writing in that journal of his, talking about the future and past as if he's seen it with his own two eyes. Takes after his grandfather, I guess." He stops attending church after going on a rant about the many evil, alien gods that walk the earth, which was taken only slightly better than his subsequent claim that God himself had abandoned the world to these wicked beings. Lawrence doesn't talk to his father much, either, but that's just business as usual on the Gilman farm.

Lawrence keeps up contact with the other investigators, at least, and hires a clipping service to collect news of strange occurrences in the state of Massachusetts and, oddly enough, Louisiana.

SAN gains: For your trips to the psychotherapist (Alex) and your stays in various institutions (everyone else) you gain the following:

Alex - gain 6 (new SAN 58)
Ivy - gain 7 (66)
Larry - gain 3 (39)
William - gain 10 (39)

Please let me know if you think your totals should be different.

Our new investigation starts tonight - (No) Southern Comfort. A familiar face makes an appearance…
