Ch. 9 Copperhead Road

Thursday March 6th, 1930 (exact time unknown)
Uncertain Location, Pointes-aux-Chenes, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana

The four men found themselves bundled out of the house and into the darkness. Before they had a chance to react, they had rough sacks pulled over their heads and they were guided, none too gently, onto what they presumed were skiffs beached nearby.

They were jerked off their feet as the skiffs were roughly shoved out on the water and they found themselves sprawled in the floor of the boat, being jostled to and fro, as the oars propelled the boat through the swamp. Any attempt to talk was met with a kick or a sharp tap with the butt of an oar, so the journey passed in tense, uncomfortable silence.

After an unknowable time, the front of the boat lifted and the scraping noise from beneath suggested that it had beached. The four men were lifted with strong hands underneath their arms and frogmarched forward, the sacks and the general darkness preventing them from seeing where they were being taken. The only thing they could tell was that they appeared to be escorted along wooden walkways, the tell-tale wooden echo giving that away.

After a minute or so, they sensed a change. They no longer walked on the wooden path and the noise from the swamp was dulled as if they found themselves indoors again. They were guided down some uneven steps and the air changed, becoming colder and still. There was an iron creak as if long-rusted hinges were being forced open, then they were shoved roughly forward into a low stone cell. Their bonds were released but the hoods left in place as the iron doors screeched closed again and they were left with just the sound of footsteps fading away.

From the darkness, a vaguely familiar voice with a British accent, snapped, “Who’s there?! Identify yourself!”

There was a moment’s pause, then a resigned chuckle, “Well, well, Mr Preston, you are a resourceful fellow. Did you come alone? How did you find me?”

“Who’s that? The one with the big mouth and the quick fists?” snapped Brophy. “Thanks to your interference, we had to leave him behind. When we get out of this mess, we’ll go back... ...”

"I ought to thank you for for those shotgun pellets, Brophy. It looks like the locals don't like either us or your little operation." Lawrence bitterly stated, feeling around the sack on his head to try and find some way to remove it.

Lawrence pulled at the sack on his head and it came away freely. He could see that he was in a small, dark cell, with stone walls and a damp floor. It was musty and there was a skittering noise that he recognised as rats running around. To the front of the cell was a door made of iron bars roughly four inches apart, a large enough gap to reach through, but little else. The cell looked out onto a dimly lit corridor, where a candle just about kept pitch darkness at bay. Opposite was another cell of similar appearance.

In reply to William, Brophy said, “I don’t know what happened to Robert. I had gone to run an errand and when I got back, those men were waiting for me...”

From a cell at the end of the corridor, one that had a solid metal door, rather than the iron bars, there was a snuffling noise. When Howard spoke, the noise stopped for a moment then a voice they all recognised, albeit deeper, slower and more gruff than they remembered, said Howard, dat you?!”

“H-How....” came a snuffled reply before great wracking sobs came from the cell.

James, James! Listen to me, James! said Brophy quickly. ”Vulgtlagln Gla’aki! Stell'bsna f’tagn!” He repeated the alien words again, and whatever it meant, it seemed have a calming effect on their young friend and the sobbing subsided, with James taking up the chant himself in a low rasping voice.

“He is in transition,” said Brophy, matter of factly, like a college professor giving a lecture. “We must be careful not to excite him as that might have dire consequences for us all.”

He was now stood at his cell door, a dark outline behind the iron bars. “Now, Thomas, the Police Officer, if I remember correctly. It was not murder, it was never murder. Gla’aki is great and wise and his knowledge is beyond comprehension. For those who serve him well, he can grant eternal life. Who wouldn’t give themselves up willingly for that?”

He has pulled off his hood too.

Lawrence kept silent with a scowl forming on his face, taking a look at his cell bars in search of any flaws or weaknesses. Brophy would pay for what he had done to James, but that would have to wait for now. On the subject of James, Lawrence was dreading to see what had become of him, though he did have a morbid, horrified curiosity about his friend's fate.

William is becoming an avatar of our lord and master,” replied Brophy, calmly. Ia! Ia! Gla’aki ftagn! We worship Gla’aki for his gifts of knowledge and the grant of eternal life.”

More quietly, he continued. ”I fear for James, however, for I know not what our captors want of him.”
Lawerence,The cell is hollowed from the rock and the only exit is through the doorway, which is blocked by the iron gate. The fittings appear to be in good condition, comprising of butt hinges and a hasp and heavy padlock to secure the door.

Howard takes a deep breath and tries to calm himself. His mind is black with hate for Brophy, but there's nothing he can do for now.

A tall, dark-skinned man stepped forward into the light. He was neatly dressed in a pinstripe suit, white shirt and bolo tie. His black hair was parted neatly and pomaded. Beside him stood Sheriff Digne.

”Let me just correct you, sir” he said. “For I am no ‘associate’ of the Sheriff, but he is an employee of mine. Isn’t that right, Sheriff?” Digne did not reply; he just looked down miserably, and rubbed at his bandaged wrist.

“So, would anyone else to hazard a guess as to why I have brought Mr Brophy here?”

“Actually, no,” replied the man in the pinstripe suit. “Mr Brophy here made the mistake of not doing his homework before setting up his hotel in my territory, which would have been bad enough, but then people start disappearing. That sort of thing gets people asking questions, even if the Sheriff is on your side. And that will not do, not when I have worked so long and so hard and my people have gone through so much.”

His voice had risen and his anger was clear. He paused a moment, looked away as he wiped his brow and collected himself. “We found out what we could about Mr Brophy and his brother, for only a fool rushes in unprepared. We found the house in the north and found his avatar. We see that he has plans to create another - the young man in the cell at the end, who, by the way, has a solid iron door because he killed one of my guards. Introducing such a creature into my domain would be deserving of punishment in itself, but the timing is fortuitous, and I have plans for Mr Brophy and his beast... ...”

“You can call me... Nyatanga. Yes, that will suffice,” he replied. “And I am the main man around here.”

He strode forward and stood in front of Lawrence’s cell. ”This land is ours, but the white men continue to enczroach upon it, seeking to destroy our land for their own enrichment, killing our scaled brethren who only seek to live without disturbance. I can feel the growing anger of the serpent god, Yig, who rages against the injustice done.”

“When the stars are right, we shall summon Yig from his slumbers to wreak his vengeance and return the land to whom it belongs. Yig will need to draw on energy when he arrives and you will supply that - you, and this man Brophy and his beast that you call ‘James’...”

As Nyatanga spoke, he waved forward two men who were stood waiting in the tunnel entrance that lead from the cells. They took up position outside the cells of William and Thomas and pointed their rifles at the young men in the cells.

”James!” called out Nyatanga. ”I am going to let you out from your cell so your friends can see what you have become. I will warn you that if you try anything, your friends will die. Do we have an understanding?”

”Yusss...” came the muffled reply and Nyatanga lifted a bunch of keys from one of the gunmen and tossed them to Sheriff Digne, who scuttled across and unlocked the door to James’ cell. The door creaked open and James shuffled forward into the flickering candlelight. He was almost twice the size as they remembered him, a ridge of skin had grown over his forehead and down to his shoulders, giving him a hooded look. Bumps under the blanket wrapped around his shoulders reminded them of the spines of the creature they saw back at Squatter’s Lake - his appearance was truly horrifying!

Lawrence gazes in abject horror at the man that once was his friend, his face frozen in a state of disgust and terror. In an awful way, Lawrence was reminded of the creature he had seen at the lake; that foul, unnatural thing had stuck in his memory ever since he had seen it, and it was even worse to see a friend changing into something like that creature.

James flinched at the reactions of his friends and he spun towards Nyatanga, roaring in pain and rage. The tall man faced him down calmly, as the Sheriff scrabbled hurriedly for his revolver. ”Think of your friends, James,” said Nyatanga, calmly. ”If you attempt to attack me, my men will shoot them dead. Whatever you do to me, their deaths will be on your conscience. The ceremony will not kill them, merely leave them weak, and there is every chance they will survive!” A guard worked the bolt on his rifle with an ominous click! to underline the threat.

James paused, the spines on his back rippling and causing waves to pattern his blanket. He looked around at his friends, locking eyes with them on by one, before he sighed and slunk back to his cell. As the Sheriff bustled forward to lock his cell door, Nyatanga said, ”A wise choice, James.”

“I am not ungrateful for the service you will render unto Great Yig, so I will have food and water brought to you. Eat well, for you will need all of your strength for what lies ahead, and I will see you at the ceremony tomorrow night.”
He nodded to them, turned on his heel and walked away down the tunnel, with the Sheriff trailing behind.

"Don't expect a straight answer from him, William." Lawrence sighs, leaning back against the cell walls, having recovered from the initial shock and terror of seeing James. He certainly didn't like all the talk of a ceremony and a serpent god; he wasn't a superstitious man, but after what he'd seen at Squatter's Lake, the supernatural seemed to have some kind of truth to it.

“The effects are reversible,” said Brophy, quietly. “But it requires a ritual which takes time and I cannot do it here.”

There is no answer from James except for a painful groan.

James and I cannot escape from here unaided. If we work together, we might escape. If we don’t, then we are most likely doomed. I have heard of the rituals of Yig - it is unlikely that we will all survive,” said Brophy.

“If we escape, I will return James to your safekeeping, I can promise you that.”

“Yig is the Serpent God, he who looks after the snakes and other creatures that crawl upon the earth. At one time that may have included the early evolution of man, but we cannot know for sure,” said Brophy, pointedly ignoring Howard.

“He has been worshipped down the ages - some identify him as Set - the Egyptian god of war and chaos - others as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of the Aztecs. The native Indians had their snakes clans; the Tsu'ngyam, the Cettvlke and the Ginebig. Sometimes he is seen as benign but more often he is a malevolent god, especially against those who have harmed snakes or other serpents.”

“From what Nyatanga said, those who are exploiting the swamps for oil have little respect for the swamps and have harmed the fauna in the area. By the sounds of it, the stars will align shortly and these people intend to summon Yig so he can wreak his revenge upon them...”

Brophy paused in contemplation for a moment, then looked up again. “A distraction that makes noise will not work - it will merely serve to draw the guard’s attention to us and that is unlikely to be to our advantage. We must be stealthy.”

“It seems we may have twenty-four hours as the ritual will not commence until the stars come out tomorrow evening. I can engender in James one of the powers of an Avatar of Gla’aki, but he and I will require quiet. James will also need a test subject in order to practice what he has learned. There will be some discomfort but hopefully no longer-lasting damage but it would greatly increase our chances of escape if one of you were to volunteer...”

"What would happen to the test subject, exactly? Don't try anything funny with us, Brophy; we may all be trapped here, but we aren't desperate enough to volunteer for something that'll kill us."

“A fully-developed Avatar of Gla’aki can exercise a ‘mind-pull’,” replied Brophy, calmly. “It causes a person to do as the Avatar wishes. James has not done this before so I must be available to help him, so if I were the test subject, our chances of success are much lower.”

”James know you are his friends and you are under lock and key so it is unlikely any harm will come to you. I understand that you have little trust in me but this would aid our escape.”

"Brophy raises some good points, though I absolutely refuse to take part in this test of his. If any if you want to volunteer, I can't and won't stop you, but I don't think just raising some kind of distraction will work." Lawrence replies, rather on-the-fence about being a test subject.

“A ‘mind pull’ is a form of mind control,” said Brophy, pointedly ignoring Howard’s outburst. “The guards will come in two’s - if we can use the ‘mind pull’ to incapacitate one, then we have a greater chance to subdue the other.”

Mr Preston - I will ask James to practice on you. Try not to think about what is happening; James will try to exercise control over you so that you may do things that you would not normally. This is how we will know that it works. Would that be acceptable to you?”

“It has limited power, admittedly,” said Brophy. “It can introduce torpor or limited suggestibility in a victim. It might induce you to go somewhere or to ignore things happening before you. With it, we might keep one guard occupied while you take care of the second.”

“The process relies on a psychic link being made between James and yourself. It won’t be like linking to a fully-grown avatar as its thoughts would be completely alien and some victims have been driven mad through such exposure. There is a small chance that you will see what James is seeing and feel what he is feeling, which you could find upsetting, but he is your friend and he will mean you no harm,” explained Brophy.

“I must hurry you for a decision,” Brophy continued. “The process will be tiring for James and we will need him rested before we can escape.

"I'll do it." Lawrence calls out. This time, he would take one for the team. "It's a risk I'll take, even if I don't want to. If things go wrong and I go crazy, Brophy will lose his chance to escape, anyways. He needs us if he wants to get out of here alive."

He turns to Lawrence and nods.

"I'll keep a close eye on Brophy" he says.

”Thank you,” snapped Brophy tersely, glaring at Howard and Thomas. To Lawrence and William he said “Go about your business, as it were. I will instruct James in what he needs to do.”

Over the next few hours, they heard Brophy talking quietly to James in that strange, harsh language he had used before. Parts were rhythmic chanting; other parts seemed like a rambling discourse. He stopped abruptly as the guards came in with some food and water, one of whom stood and watched carefully as the other pushed trays of food towards the cell doors where they could be retrieved by their occupants.

Another half hour passed and Lawrence and William felt a tingling sensation at the backs of their necks. For William, the sensational was momentary, but for Lawrence it lasted longer and he felt a momentary link with James but it faded quickly away.

”We will try again shortly,” said Brophy quietly. ”In the meantime, we need a plan to get out of here if this works...”

Howard is regarding Lawrence looking for anything amiss.

"We can't get out of these cages without the keys. We need to take on the guards somehow."

He looks at Brophy.

“Did you observe the guards?” asked Brophy with dry sarcasm. “One watches from the doorway while the second comes closer with the food. James and I will distract the one by the door, leaving the other to the four of you.”

“The guard with the food is the one who approaches you most closely. At best, two of you may be able to grab him; the space between the cells precludes any more being directly involved. When James subdues the second guard, you will only have a few seconds to deal with the other one,” said Brophy. “You must act quickly.”

"All right," says William. "We'll do it when he brings the food. Maybe when James disables the other guard, that'll distract him too. That's when we'll strike. If only two of us can reach him, I'll leave that to the others. I'm not the best at fighting."

”Very well,” replied Brophy. ”Now, James and I must practice again.”

This time it was William who felt the effect of James’ attempt to create a mental link. He found himself momentarily unable to move but the feeling passed quickly as soon as he realised what was happening. He felt light-headed and could hear Brophy’s murmured instructions to James.

Brophy conferred with James in the guttural language they shared. James said his connection wasn’t strong. He said it was like sand running through his fingers as he tried to control your actions. There is more we can do, but it will involve sacrificing something of both of us, so we cannot practice again within weakening ourselves to the point that we could not escape with you.”

Brophy sat down on the cell floor, his head resting against the bars.”We must rest,” he said. ”We will require all our strength for what is coming...”

- - -

The rest of the day passed quietly. Periodically Brophy would talk to James, preparing him for what was to come. Once their plan of action had been decided, Howard, Lawrence, Thomas and William were left with their thoughts as they waited for the guards to return. The hours stretched out infinitesimally and it seemed that the guards would never come but at last they heard the key turn in the lock and they smelled the food that they were being brought for their pre-ritual supper.

Brophy whispered some last minute instructions to James as the guards approached. The older of the two cradled a rifle in his arms and watched on as his younger colleague approached the cells with a tray of food. As he knelt to push the tray up to the bars, nothing happened for a moment, then Brophy and James swiftly started chanting in unison, ”Iä! Iä! Gla’aki! Iä! Iä!”. Both guards looked startled, looking at each other questioningly, until the guard with the rifle suddenly stood upright, his eyes rolling backwards and blood-flecked foam starting to form at his mouth...

There’s was a grunt of pained frustration from James’ cell and the guard with a rifle lurched towards Lawrence’s cell like a poorly controlled marionette with a slack-jawed look upon his face.

The guard that Thomas was trying to subdue was trying to break free. Thomas’ punch had missed its target and the guard was now attempting to push himself away from the bars so he get some leverage and break the young policeman’s grip!

The guard held by Thomas tried to break free. He pushed hard against the bars and twisted free from the policeman’s grip, avoiding the punches that flailed at him now he was out of reach. He turned and started to run towards the tunnel that lead to the cells!

The rifle-carrying guard blinked as William’s blow connected but any response was cut short when Lawrence grabbed the rifle barrel and yanked it sharply through the bars. The gap between wasn’t big enough for the rifle to pass through but nor was it quite big enough for the guard’s hand that gripped the barrel, either, which got wedged between the bars and the gun, stripping the skin off the back of the guard’s hand and causing him to bellow in pain...

Looking back towards the alter, William and Lawrence noticed a curtained alcove to left of the chantry. From its’ position and their knowledge of church buildings, they could assume that the vestry would be located beyond the curtain.

Behind the curtain was the door that lead into a small wood-panelled vestry. It was empty, except for some pegs on the wall, a plain desk and a rickety-looking chair.

To the right of the door William was looking through, was another door that lead outside. It stood ajar so the chanting was louder here than in the main church, and the the flickering light from the fire outside lit up the room.

William eased the door open but immediately realised that this exit directly overlooked the site of the ritual. He could see Nyatanga leading the ritual by the light of a large fire, beside which was a crude stone altar and a wooden frame between which a large animal hide had been stretched. One the hide was a painting of a snake, which William thought may have been moving, although that could be the heat haze from the fire.

A guard stood between the church and the ritual site, looking on as things unfolded. As William watched, he casually glanced back towards the church. The lawyer thought there was no way he couldn’t be seen, but the guard just blinked and turned back to ritual once again.

The front door of the church creaked as they pushed it open to get a better look at the snake. It was dark outside but a single lantern hung beside the door cast enough light to illuminate the scales of a large serpent that watched them balefully from a metre or so away. It was bigger than any snake they had ever seen before - more than three metres long and as thick as a man’s thigh. Its eyes glowed with the same yellow light as the statues inside, and its tongue flicked in and out, tasting the air, while the rattle buzzed an unmistakable warning...

The men emerged quickly from the church to meet the giant snake on the church step. The snake reared up instantly, its rattle a blur as it sounded out a warning. Lawrence swung his rifle like a club but the snake whipped out of the way, before striking back with venom-flecked fangs which missed by a mile. Thomas followed hard on his heels and caught the snake with a solid strike with the flat of the spade, causing the creature to hiss violently.

As the snake was distracted, William slipped past it, followed by Howard, who helped James down the steps. Brophy huffed and puffed as he ran after them. They could see that the church stood on a small island, with paths leading away in all directions. From inside the church there was a shout of consternation... ...

As the rest of the party ran from the church, the large rattlesnake tried to bite Lawrence again. Its fangs flashed closer this time, but still not close enough to catch him. As it reared up for a further strike, Lawrence swung the rifle and caught the snake with a stunning blow that sent it slithering senseless down the steps and into grass beyond, where it lay twitching spasmodically.

As Lawrence turned and ran, there was a howl of protest from beyond the church that felt like a clap of thunder. As he caught up with Brophy, the older man puffed, ”I think that was Father Yig! If you killed that serpent he will hunt you down and make you pay!”

Up front, William led the way as the others helped James along. He could see something through the trees, something reflecting the light from the fire behind them. He’d thought it was a boat but he realised with a start that there were cars parked at the side of a dirt track!

Out in the swamp they wouldn’t have thought that people would lock their cars, but not a single one was open. As William swung behind the wheel, Howard cranked the starting handle and the engine fired into life first time!

Tucked in beside the next car, Thomas swung his spade at the rim of the tyre, hoping to cause a puncture. There was a clatter and a few sparks caused by the metal on metal contact, but no apparent damage to the tyre.

From his position, behind one of the cars, Lawrence could see a number of people running towards them. Beyond them, the Sheriff fired again from the church steps, while more people were emerging from behind the church, presumably the worshippers of Yig, come to wreak revenge on those who had disrupted their ritual.

Brophy quickly helped James onto the back of the truck and then approached another of the cars. There was a sound of cloth tearing and a petrol cap being unscrewed, then he hissed loudly, ”Does anyone have any matches?!”

As William gunned the engine, Lawrence fired over the bonnet of the nearby car. His shot went wide but those at the front of the approaching pack ducked and had to try hard not to stumble. The Sheriff fired again and the bullet smashed the windscreen of the car behind which Lawrence was taking cover.

As Howard reached Brophy, the old man had already removed the filler cap and had dipped a torn piece of cloth into the tank to soak up some fuel. He took the matches from Howard and lit the rag, which caught immediately with a orange, smoky flame.

Lawrence’s final shot was a misfire. As the firing pin hit the primer, it blew up in his face with powder and shards of metal flying back into his face. As he staggered back toward the flatbed, Brophy pushed past him and clambered onto the truck.

The sheriff fired again but his shot flew wide, almost killing one of the men charging towards the vehicles.

As Howard tried to light up the second car, the first one caught fire and flames started shooting from the gas tank...

Howard wished he’d spent less time in his studio and more time on the track as William pushed his foot to the floor and truck jerked forward. The student felt hands plucking at his clothes but they couldn’t stop him as James hauled him aboard.

On shaky legs, swaying with the movement of the truck, Thomas stood with his shovel ready. Beside him, Lawrence tried to clear the breach of his rifle, but the blood running into his eyes made it impossible to see properly.

The car with the burning petrol tank suddenly exploded with a “WHOOMPH!”, causing the chasing pack to scatter and dive for cover. Thomas was knocked over by the force of the explosion, sent flying to the floor of the truck amongst the debris there.

The sheriff fired one last shot but again it was wide, and William accelerated quickly and they were soon out of range...

Just one of their pursuers was still on their feet. Wordlessly screaming, he staggered forward, flames licking up his body. He tottered a few more steps before his legs crumpled and he collapsed face first in the middle of road.

Behind him and beyond the church, flame-lit smoke from the sacrificial fire boiled into the sky. As Howard watched, it rolled and coiled like a giant snake with - briefly - dead, serpentine eyes that chilled Howard to his soul before it dissipated into the night sky... ...

The road was rutted and uneven and it took all of William’s strength and concentration to keep the truck in a straight line.

In the back, Howard sat back carefully, his eyes not leaving the scene behind him, which was both abhorrent but strangely compelling at the same time. Beside him, Thomas lay on his back, winded from his fall and absentmindedly running his hand through his hair, picking out bits that had been charred by the explosion. Further still, Lawrence was trying to fix the rifle, picking out bits of bullet fragments from the ejection port, realising as he did so, that he had no bullets left.

Up ahead, William could see a break in the trees, the stars twinkling between the stygian shadows of the Cyprus trees. Through the open cab window, William could hear Brophy talking quietly to James in a language that he didn’t understand.

Brophy continued to talk to James for a while but eventually lapsed into silence, his head slumped onto his chest. It looked as If the disturbed night’s sleep and the exertions of their escape had taken its toll. In fact, they were all feeling it, struggling to stay awake as the truck rolled along...

As the lights from the truck lit up the ‘Welcome to Pointe-aux-Chênes’, Brophy’s eyes snapped open and he barked “Now, James!” and a dozen writhing tentacles flew through the air, trying to ensnare the investigators!

The brakes were far more efficient than they had any right to be on such a beaten-up truck and the passengers in the back all pitched forward alarmingly.

Brophy was thrown against the back of the cab, where Howard and Lawrence were thrown on top of him. Thomas was less lucky; he was tipped over the side of the truck and he landed on the side of the road, feeling a couple of ribs pop as he fell on the packed earth.

James’ bulk - he seemed bigger again than before - had stopped him sliding of the truck and four more tentacles whipped out! One caught Howard around the ankle and started to pull him off Brophy and the second crashed through the cab window and started wrap itself around William’s neck...

Brophy tried to twist out of the way but Lawrence caught him full on with the shovel, knocking him halfway over the cab of the truck. His body went limp and he started to slide down the windscreen...

As William saw the unconscious Brophy slip down, he popped the clutch and the truck jerked backwards, the sudden change of direction causing those on the back of the truck to stumble again. Lawrence managed to keep his feet, but James and Howard were thrown to the floor. The force of the fall caused the tentacle around William’s neck to tighten and he had to bury his chin in his chest to stop himself from choking.

In the road, Thomas pushed himself to his feet and, despite the pain he was in, ran towards the truck to join in the fray...

As William reversed, the unconscious Brophy rolled off the front of the truck and tumbled to the ground. The truck moved backwards a few yards until Thomas could reach it and bang on the side, indicating William should stop. The lawyer put his foot on the brake pedal, even as the tentacle around his neck tightened and he found himself unable to breathe!

As Thomas climbed onto the truck, he deftly threw a box of matches to Lawrence. On the back of the truck, Howard found himself being dragged off the back of the flatbed, only just managing hang on, to prevent James from flinging him to the floor.

Howard found himself swung from the bed of the truck and flung into the road, knocking back Thomas as he tried to close the gap on James.

William felt the tentacle tightening around his neck, slowly starting to crush his windpipe and keeping him secured in the driver’s seat. He tried again unsuccessfully to break James’ hold and he could start to feel the blood pounding in his head as the pressure began to build.

As Lawrence contemplated his next move, James exuded another tentacle, this time with a sharp metallic spine protruding from its tip. It waved in the air as if trying to get its bearings before pointing directly at Lawrence.

Lawrence spun the gas cap free of the tank and dropped it in the road. A rag tucked into the chassis made for a handy wick, which he stuffed into the filler pipe. It soaked up the fuel greedily and caught readily when Lawrence applied a lit match.

In the cab, William felt the grip around his neck slacken as he managed to get fingers between his neck and the tentacle. Outside the cab window, he saw another tentacle whip forward, breaking the window glass and trying to wrench the driver’s door open.

At the rear, Thomas found himself pushed none-to-gently off the back of the truck, and in the direction of Howard, who was lying winded in the road. On the flatbed on the back of the truck, James was bent over, twisted in agony. He howled in pain, looked up and shouted, ”Ruuunnnn!!!”

The gas tank exploded with a deafening bang! and the whole truck shook. Burning fuel flew everywhere - into the road, over James and into the cab through the broken rear window, where it set fire to the shoulder of William’s coat, flames licking up his neck and causing his skin and hair to crisp and burn.

The explosion ignited the now ruptured fuel line and from their prone positions where they had been thrown by the force of the explosion, Lawrence, Thomas and William could see the flames flicker along the underside of the truck and into the engine, where more fuel and oil caused the fire the surge anew.

Keening in pain with blackening scars developing across his body as the flames engulfed him, James made one final effort, simultaneously wrenching open the cab door and shoving William out into the road, where he fell facedown onto the packed earth, flames burning away his jacket and starting to scorch the skin beneath!

”Go... .. friends... ...” whispered James, barely audible through heat-blistered lips, before his legs gave way and he collapsed onto the bed of the burning truck.

His heart filled with hate, Howard leaps after Brophy, intent on finishing his life. But as his feet enter the water, he slips on the slimy bottom of the ditch and pitches backwards.

Brophy looked back with fear and alarm as Lawrence landed in the ditch behind him. The young farmer’s foot slipped in the mud as he went to strike Brophy and he missed. Howard went one better, losing his footing as he dropped into the ditch and ending up sat in the stinking water.

Thomas ran across the road to help William, who was shying away from the flames and imagined sparks that were threatening to set fire to him again. With the young policeman’s help, he tried again to get past the flaming truck so that he could bathe in the cooling waters of the ditch.

Without hesitation, William scrambles into the ditch and plunges into the water, which also helps soothe his burns.

Lawrence lifts himself from the fowl ditch before throwing another wild haymaker Brophy's way, wild-eyed with murderous wrath. However, his punch proved imprecise, thanks to a combination of blood, sweat, and swamp-water in the farmer's eyes.

As Lawrence and Howard scrambled along the ditch, Thomas walked up the bank behind them, the shovel in his hands. He swung it high above his head and brought it down hard on Brophy’s back, leaving a bloody gouge across his shoulder, though which broken bone could be seen. He dropped the shovel on the old man and turned back to help William, who was lying face down in the ditchwater, a few yards behind them.

As William tried frantically to extinguish the flames that seemed to flare up again as soon as doused them with water, Thomas dropped down into the ditched beside him. The young policeman grabbed his shoulder. William, are you alright?! The flames are out!” he shouted.

Further along in the same ditch, Brophy cried out weakly as he tried to pull himself along. The shoulder struck by Thomas now appeared useless and, with just one arm, his mobility was severely impaired. His feet kicked out against the muddy walls of the ditch but there was no purchase to move him forward.
OOC,Brophy is badly wounded and barely able to move, so any hits are automatic. Can I also have a party luck roll?

Thomas pulled William from the water and dragged him bodily up onto the edge of the ditch. ”The fire’s out, William!” he shouted, shaking the lawyer by the arms.

In the ditch, Brophy struggled weakly, unable to dislodge Howard’s powerful grip. When Lawrence stomped on his ribs, there was a sharp crack and the old man convulsed like he’d been plugged into the mains, throwing Howard clear. Brophy’s back arched and he looked up into the eyes of executioners, his mouth open in a wordless disbelieving scream, before his body went limp and he splashed facedown in the filthy ditchwater, lifeless and still.

There was an unreal silence, broken only by the crackling, popping sound of the fire on the truck. As one, they turned to look for James but their friend was nothing but a blistered pile of dead flesh on the flatbed. Flames and black smoke continued to rise into the air but the fire itself was starting to die back. The smell of burnt flesh that emanated from the truck was truly nauseating.

In the distance, in the direction of the town, headlights could be seen from a car coming in their direction...

Lawrence breathed heavily as he looked down upon the corpse of Brophy, the adrenaline granted by the violent combat finally fading away; his normally placid face was twisted into a wild-eyed look of sheer hatred, which was all he felt towards the man who had turned James into a monster. The oncoming car certainly caught his attention away from the body, however, and he quickly looked up towards the approaching light.
OOC,Lawrence is still filled with absolute hatred towards Brophy, though he's soon going to realize that he's committed actual murder, even if Brophy somewhat deserved it.

”The fire is out, William!” said Thomas firmly. ”Look for yourself.” And he released his grip and stepped back to give the lawyer space to check for himself.

In the distance, the growl of the car’s engine could be heard.

OOC,It’s a narrow road, barely more than two cars wide. It is surfaced, but the surface is pitted and broken. On the side with the ditch, there are partially submerged fields. Progress in the ditch was slow and the four men were no more than 100 yards or so away from still-burning truck when the approaching car slowed down and stopped alongside it. The driver got out and inspected the truck before they turned away, staggered to the side of the road and vomited into the ditch.

After about a minute, they straightened up, wiped their mouth and looked up and down the road.

William recognised it in a heartbeat. Jokingly, it had been referred to as the ‘wallet that never opens’ and it had belonged to James, who, despite his family’s wealth, was always careful about spending money.

Inside, tucked away in a pocket, was his valedictorian ring and two roughly scrawled notes; one for Emily and one addressed to James’ father.

"We don't have to tell them all the details," says William. "We just tell them that Brophy is responsible for his death, and that he died saving my life. That's enough of the truth, along with whatever's in the letters. I won't read them myself, that would be an invasion of privacy."

“We don’t have to tell them all the details? So we just tell him that James is dead, and he’ll just have to accept it? You know Old Man Fraser better than that!” Howard snaps. “He’ll blame us and probably get the police to start looking at us!”

He shakes his head.

“No, we never found James. He’s gone. He went with Brophy to Cuba or some place and doesn’t want to come back. Just burn those letters!”

"I don't think he'll swallow that either," says William. "Look, we can tell him that James died in a burning truck as we were fleeing from kidnappers. There will be enough in the papers about this that we'll have evidence to back us up on it."

"William is right, but we're still gonna have to explain to the cops why there's a corpse floating in the ditch." Lawrence responds, his temporary wave of panic somewhat subsiding. "And we can't burn the letters; just wouldn't sit right with me."

Howard shakes his head angrily.

“Evidence? We burned the damn truck! We killed James!” he shouts. “And yes! What about that old man we beat to death? How the hell do we explain that? Wake up, for chrissakes!”

He points at the remains of the truck for emphasis.

"The easiest explanation is that we didn't find him. He's gone and there's no trace. There's no right thing to do here. Let's go!"

"We can discuss what we'll tell Mr. Fraser later, on the way back," says William. "Brophy is a wanted fugitive who betrayed us and tried to kill us. I may not be a criminal lawyer, but I can make a pretty good case for self-defense. The only living witnesses are right here, so there's nobody to contradict us. As for the cops, we can't go to them in this parish at all. Remember, the sheriff's in on it. He'll just turn us right back over to the kidnappers, and they'll kill us. We need to get on a train and get back to Massachusetts as soon as possible. The sooner we cross a state line, the better. If we're picked up in Louisiana, they'll just send us back here to the sheriff. Once we're in Mississippi, Arkansas, or Texas, they'd have to extradite us, and I can fight that in the courts."

Friday March 7th, 1930 9.00am.
Our Lady of the Lake Sanitarium, Hennessy Blvd, Baton Rouge

Thomas took the front seat next to Oscar, with the other three in the back. With one final glance at the ebbing flames of the truck, Oscar pulled away and headed north, through Pointes-aux-Chene and north to Baton Rouge.

The sun was beginning to peek over the horizon as he pulled up in front of the Lady of the Lake Sanitarium and when the extent of William’s injuries became known, he was swiftly taken inside where a junior houseman could take a look at him and apply dressings to his burns. A nurse checked over the other three while they waited to see William but it wasn’t too long before they were reunited in a side ward. Outside they could see Oscar smoking a cigarette as he spoke to one of the hospital orderlies.

In the distance, the chime of the chapel bell announced it was 9.00am.

Oscar had already fetched what remained of their belongings from Mrs Sykes’ boarding house so once they were in his car, they were underway. As he waited to pull onto the main road, a police car with its siren blaring, raced down the road and turned into the drive leading to the sanitarium.

“You gennelmen think that’s anything to do with you?” said Oscar, looking straight ahead as his passengers shrank into their seats and tried to appear innocuous. He looked back in the mirror and continued, “Ah’m guessing you don’t wanna find out!”. He checked for traffic and accelerated, pulling out onto the main road and in the direction of South Central Station.

Ten minutes later, they pulled up in front of the station and Oscar brought the car to a stop. “Here you go,” he said. “Is there anything more I can do for you gennelmen before you go?”

Oscar pocketed the tip with a wide beam of gratitude. While the four friends had been in hospital overnight, he had secured tickets for their journey home and picked up what was left of their belongings from Mrs Sykes’ lodging house. He now he set about the task of finding a porter to unload the car.

He returned shortly with a well-built man sporting the livery of the ralroad company. The porter pushed a trolley before him and it wasn’t long before their luggage was neatly stacked and being pushed onto the platform in search of their train.

Following directions, they headed to the far side of the station to a short and somewhat nondescript platform, at which sat a gleaming black train of just a couple of carriages and and engine. Steam rose gently from the engine, drifting on the morning breeze. A tall, sallow guard ushered them onto the train and indicated to Oscar where the cases could be stowed. The whistle sounded and steam could be heard huffing from the engine, and the conductor gently but firmly ushered Oscar from the train so the friends’ journey home could begin... ... ...

The adventure will continue soon in Black Train Blues.
