William spots something and waves to the others to follow him.

Lawrence makes one more swing at the rattlesnake with the butt of his rifle, before running to follow William's path out.

Thomas, having watched Lawrence hit the snake again, decides to run after William. "Quickly, let's go." he says.

As the rest of the party ran from the church, the large rattlesnake tried to bite Lawrence again. Its fangs flashed closer this time, but still not close enough to catch him. As it reared up for a further strike, Lawrence swung the rifle and caught the snake with a stunning blow that sent it slithering senseless down the steps and into grass beyond, where it lay twitching spasmodically.

As Lawrence turned and ran, there was a howl of protest from beyond the church that felt like a clap of thunder. As he caught up with Brophy, the older man puffed, ”I think that was Father Yig! If you killed that serpent he will hunt you down and make you pay!”

Up front, William led the way as the others helped James along. He could see something through the trees, something reflecting the light from the fire behind them. He’d thought it was a boat but he realised with a start that there were cars parked at the side of a dirt track!

"Then I hope you thought wrong!" Lawrence snapped back frantically as he continued his sprint; he, in fact, did not have a good track record with snakes.
"William! What's up ahead of us?"

"Parked cars next to a dirt track," replied William.

"Let's get over there!" says Howard, helping James. He casts a look back over his shoulder, his face taut.

Thomas runs towards one of the cars, and tries to get in.

[Mr. Handy]

"I'll drive," says William, also running for the cars.

Lawrence books it for the cars, his rifle primed to smash open a window, if need be.
"We better get moving fast, then, 'cause I haven't got any extra bullets!" he pants, trying to catch his breath.

From the church doorway came the sound of a pistol being fired, followed by a wooden thunk as the bullet hit a tree more than ten yards away...

Lawrence ducks behind one of the cars for cover, waiting for the Sheriff to come closer.

As Lawrence watched out for the Sheriff, he could here the others trying the handles of the parked cars. Out in the swamp they wouldn’t have thought that people would lock their cars, but not a single one was open. At the end of the line, the only vehicle that wasn’t locked was a knocked-about Chevy flatbed truck. It had doors but no windows, scratched up paintwork, and a starting handle to get it going...

"We"ll have to take this one!" shouts Howard. "But they're just gonna catch up to us if we don't disable their cars first, or delay them somehow."

He starts cranking the starter handle.

[Mr. Handy]

"Cover us," William says to Lawrence, opening the driver's side door of the truck and getting into the seat. "Let's get this truck started. It's our only way out of here. Someone needs to either slash the tires of the other cars or remove the distributor caps."

[Bullfrog]

Lawrence nodded in acknowledgement, taking cover behind the flatbed truck as he continued his watch, rifle shouldered and ready to fire.
"Brophy! Go deal with the other cars!" Lawrence ordered anxiously, a bit preoccupied with his task at hand.

Thomas takes cover behind one of the cars and tries to damage the front tires with the shovel. "Are they coming?" he shouts to the others.

As William swung behind the wheel, Howard cranked the starting handle and the engine fired into life first time!

Tucked in beside the next car, Thomas swung his spade at the rim of the tyre, hoping to cause a puncture. There was a clatter and a few sparks caused by the metal on metal contact, but no apparent damage to the tyre.

From his position, behind one of the cars, Lawrence could see a number of people running towards them. Beyond them, the Sheriff fired again from the church steps, while more people were emerging from behind the church, presumably the worshippers of Yig, come to wreak revenge on those who had disrupted their ritual.

Brophy quickly helped James onto the back of the truck and then approached another of the cars. There was a sound of cloth tearing and a petrol cap being unscrewed, then he hissed loudly, ”Does anyone have any matches?!”

Lawrence returns fire on the sheriff, the sound of his rifle's shot cracking through the air; hopefully, those years of practice down at the farm would pay off.
