Chapter 5: Beth

[HoneyDog]

Beth shakes her head, bemused. “There might be some at the house. I know that she destroyed a lot of them. Dr. Dwight might know about that, I know she talked with him about her writing.”

[Mr. Handy]

"Where can we find Dr. Dwight?" asks Alice. "I think we should talk to him later."

Harrison doesn't say much but continues to listen intently.

[HoneyDog]

“He has a practice near the university. I can call him if you like and see if he’ll meet with you. He’s been a family friend for years and I think he was helping Margaret. He’ll be devastated by this, I’m sure.”

[Mr. Handy]

"Thank you," says Alice, "I'd like that. Maybe he can continue to help her, if he can get in to see her."

[HoneyDog]

“I think it’s a bit late for that now” frowns Beth. “But we should know the decision of the medical board soon, as to whether Margaret will be declared fit to stand trial.”

[Mr. Handy]

"Do you think we could have a look inside the house?" asks Alice. "There could be more of her writings hidden there."

[HoneyDog]

“I suppose so” says Beth. “But you must promise me that you will return to me anything you find and keep me appraised. Despite what she did, I can’t really blame her, I know it wasn’t really her fault. So we all want to help her as much as possible, especially for Tabitha’s sake. And you must all promise me that whatever you find out, you won’t go to the newspapers or use it for any sensational purposes. My family has suffered enough, and I won’t see them suffer any more. Can I have your word on that?”

Her stern tone indicates that she fully means what she says.

[Mr. Handy]

"You have my word," says Alice, with all sincerity. "Do you know when Margaret will be ready to receive visitors?"

[HoneyDog]

“Thank you” replies Beth. “I don’t know about visitors, they won’t even let her parents see her right now. I guess that we’ll have to wait until the medical board verdict.”

[Mr. Handy]

"You're welcome," says Alice. "We'll just have to wait for that then." She looks to the others to see if they have any questions.

[HoneyDog]

Beth gets up and goes out of the room, returning shortly after holding a key, which she gives to Alice.

“The police told me that they’ve finished, so you’re free to look around. I’ll call Dr. Dwight and see if he’ll meet with you.”

[Mr. Handy]

"Thank you, Beth," says Alice, putting away the key. "I appreciate it."

[HoneyDog]

"Tomorrow is Saturday" says Beth. "Will you visit the house then?"

[Mr. Handy]

"Yes, that sounds like a good time to go," says Alice. "I don't have to work on Saturday."
