If you were talking to a friend or someone of a similar social standing, you would probably have been ok. Unfortunately, Lady Allingham is neither...

Poor Rooter committed a dreadful faux pas. Philulhu is correct, to use such language is being far too familiar with someone you’ve just met. Even today, you’d be risking a punch in the face to talk to a grieving widow like that.

Affection isn’t expected and would feel very out of place in this society, particularly with strangers, so the best way to talk to everyone you meet is to just be formal. I advise to throw your dictionary in the trash, and then burn the trash. Percy must roll 1d3 Credit Rating loss as a penalty for this linguistic atrocity. His standing will suffer.

Melody's eyes are drawn nervously back to the painting of the stern lord, as though she expects the ghost of Lady Allingham's late husband to emerge into the room from within the portrait.
