FitzWilliam,The man looks uncomfortable. [color=#BF4000]“There’s nothing I could really tell you, sir”[/color] he says quietly. [color=#BF4000]“We just leave that field alone. It’s always been that way, ever since I was a child anyway. The only time someone messed around there was…” [/color]he breaks off. [color=#BF0040]“Well, you know what happened.”[/color] Without saying anything further, he turns and walks off.

"Please could you keep the captain's food warm?" Isolde asks Peggy as she sits down. To Alexander she says, "I think I'm nearly defrosted. Now, as a scientific man, what do you think about this idea of there being an ancient druids' grove around here? Possibly even on the site of Hobbs Field. The very same that all those Romans were massacred at."

FitzWilliam,The man begins to look annoyed. [color=#BF4000]“No one told me! We just don’t go there!”[/color] he says, his voice raised. [color=#BF4000]“Now let me be!”[/color]

"Aye, it's possible there's a grove like that," says Alexander. "The druids were a very real part of history, though they didn't have any special powers and couldn't turn into animals or anything of the sort. They would believe such groves to be sacred. There may even be folk today with druidic beliefs, to whom those traditions were passed on. People believe all kinds of things. It doesn't make them true, of course."

[color=#800000]”We’re just trying to find out why - and how - a man died. He may have been despised in the village but a young girl now has no father, so I think we owe it to her to try to solve this mystery.” [/color]

FitzWilliam,[color=#BF4000]“That’s all very well” [/color]says the man, loudly, ignoring the outstretched hand. A couple of passersby have stopped to look. [color=#BF4000]“But I can’t say it any clearer – we keep away from Hob’s Field. It’s just the way things are. Now” [/color]he growls, [color=#BF4000]“gentleman or not, if you follow me again, I’ll put you on your arse.”[/color] He turns around and strides off.

FitzWilliam,FitzWilliam is rewarded with a dirty look. The bystanders move on.

Captain FitzWilliam was grim-faced when he returned to the pub. ”I spoke to the man who just left about Hob’s Field but all he said was that people were told to stay away from there. I tried to push him for more information and he threatened to hit me,” he said as he took his seat.

Isolde makes room for Fitzwilliam at the table, "How unpleasant! Maybe we should talk to our historian; has Hobbs Field always had this reputation or is it only recent; maybe a rumour spread by the newcomers; who we will have to visit at their homes I suppose."

”l certainly think it’s worth going to talk to Reverend Sherbrooke again,” said Captain FitzWilliam, as he tucked into his lunch.

“We should also go to talk to the workers brought in by his Lordship. Perhaps the landlady can point us in their direction?”

The society leave the pub with directions to where the newcomers’ cottages are. Beforehand however they stop by the church and parsonage, and are shown in to Reverend Sherbrooke, who again greets them warmly.

“Back so soon!” he exclaims. “I am lucky! Tell me, what have you discovered?”

He eagerly leans forward in his chair.
