Owens listened to Alice's list and nodded appreciatively. "A young lady"--he was conscious of his earlier faux pas--"who knows her expedition gear is a rare thing. I'm mightily impressed!" and he bowed. "A shotgun?..." he puzzled.

"This isn't my first outing, and as secretary for professors who sometimes plan expeditions, it falls upon me to make the arrangements. As for the shotgun, it could be useful if we run into wild beasts or the like. I'm actually not a bad shot."
