OOC: Discussions

[They] "transport beaver hides, the pelts of the black fox and swords from the farthest reaches of the Saqaliba to the Sea of Rum [i.e., the Black Sea]. The ruler of Rum [i.e., the Byzantine Empire] takes a tithe of them. If they wish, they go to the Tnys river [i.e., "Tanais", the Greek name of the Don River], Yitil [i.e., Itil, the ancient name of the Volga], or Tin [variously identified as Don or Seversky Donets], the River of the Saqaliba. They travel to Khamlij, the city of the Khazars whose ruler takes a tithe of them. Then they betake themselves to the Sea of Jurjan [Caspian Sea] and they alight on whichever of its shores they wish. ... Sometimes, they carry their goods from Jurjan by camel to Baghdad. Saqlab slaves translate for them. They claim that they are Christians and pay the jizya."

885-886, Ibn Khordadbeh writing about the Rus merchants who brought goods from Northern Europe and Northwestern Russia to Baghdad

Guys,
.if you want to play can you start to detail your characters with some background, please? Essentially, you can come from anywhere in the Viking world,
these lands appear ripe for settlement and trade and so have drawn many to their shores.

That said the last year has been a hard one the winter has been wet rather than cold as it should be and anyone working on the land has suffered as a result, only the generosity of Asger Kelvigson has kept people from simply starving to death now he asks for a crew on his boat as it sails down South.

Should we post character sheets with our rolls in that topic?

How does our pay of 300 pennies translate into silver derniers listed in the Dark Ages book? Also, when you say that we are paid at both ends, does that mean we have additional money to spend besides what we rolled in character creation? I ask because I wanted to purchase a shield but couldn't afford it at the start.

So the Vikings didn't really have a cash economy, Silver circulated in the form of bars, or ingots, as well as in the form of jewellery and ornaments. Large pieces of jewellery were often chopped up into smaller pieces known as 'hack-silver' to make up the exact weight of silver required. Imported coins and fragments of coins were also used for the same purpose. So 300 Pennies, Krowns, Derniers same deal really its currency by weight of silver.

However, what you really want to know is about payment. You get paid half when you get to the Southern end of the voyage, where theoretically you can leave or if you've pissed off the captain enough get thrown off the ship. The remainder of the money is paid when you return.

Crew don't get paid in advance or men would simply travel around signing on with Captains getting their advance payments then leaving town.

I'll give the others who have expressed an interest a couple of days to update and introduce their characters and then we'll move on.

I'd shortchanged myself on skill points, but I added the ones I was missing to my character sheet.

I have a question on how rolls work. I usually preview before I post to make sure it looks good and there's no glaring errors, however, if I preview before I roll, it seems to mess up my rolls. For example, when I previewed my post before I rolled luck and spot hidden, it listed my two rolls as 0 and 1 instead of actually rolling the dice so I deleted the post and just reposted without previewing which made the rolls actually happen.

Then I saw Mr. Handy post a response as if he knew his rolls. Did you (Mr. Handy) edit your post after you rolled (because I didn't see an edit listed at the bottom) and if not, how do you roll and still post based upon what your rolls are?

If I have to post the rolls and then edit the post to describe what I am doing based upon the result of the roll, I can do that, I just want to know what the proper protocol is in that situation.

Yes, that's what I do. First I post my rolls, and after I've seen them I edit my post to reflect my roll results. When you edit your rolls after you've already made them, they will appear as 0, 1, etc. between the dice tags. This is perfectly normal. They will still appear correctly after you view your post again when you finish editing it.

You can find instructions on using the dice roller here.

With regards SAN loss unless I tell you otherwise you mark it off your character I'd just note it eg 12-2,-1, -1 etc then total it up at the end of the voyage. Because there may be opportunities to recover SAN during the trip.

Sorry guys, I've been going through a divorce and really haven't found the time for otherworldly horrors. I'd like to say the campaign will pick up soon, but I can't guarantee that will be the case. So best to consider it on indefinite hold.

Sorry
