To others, a daughter. But regardless of the relation, the investigators set out to bring her home. But ancient evils lurk everywhere, and as the investigators are about to discover, some are very close to home...

Character Creation

Your characters should be normal people, all of whom know either Karen or her family.

Karen is a senior in high school. The adopted daughter of the Parker Family, she's nearly 18, a friendly girl and something of a tomboy. She's well liked and known around the town the game is based in. As the story begins she's out on a camping trip with a few friends and their parents. This is not an unusual activity for her, especially during the summer months.

In addition to Karen, the Parker's have two other children, 12 year old Freddie and 8 year old Daniella. The family is generally a happy one, though Karen's that age where she may keep a secret or two.

Feel free to ask questions if you need more information making your characters. I'm deliberately leaving it open ended so you have some leeway to think up characters. Just so long as they'd have a connection and motivation to search for Karen when she goes missing. Family is probably the most effective way to do this, but friends or neighbors of the Parkers could work as well.

A tall, elderly man of an extreme age. He looms over near-everyone in a room. Considered to be extremely eccentric by everyone in the town, and sports an odd limp that exaggerates his walk. An intelligent sparkle is always found within his eyes. No one truly knows what he is thinking or how much wisdom is contained within his memories. He is generally found wearing a heavy trench-coat clad over a dark-grey shirt and a smoking pipe in his hand. On his left hand's ring finger, he wears a wedding ring that he has never taken off. Even after the death of his wife. His right leg is replaced with a prosthetic limb that he has since grown used to. Tobias suffers from an uneven sleep schedule, haunted by nightmares and dark visions from his own past.

Backstory:
Tobias Jerkins is the first born child of the Jerkins family, burdened with expectations and pressure to be the model upstanding young male of the 1920s, he moved to the land of hopes and dreams in order to search for his passion: America. After a few years, he had regretted his selfish decisions of abandoning his family behind to further his own goals, he has since then made attempts to reconcile with his younger sister and support his parents. His mother died in the 1950s of hereditary heart disease and alcohol poisoning. His younger sister has died before him as well, becoming an object of trauma and deep regrets as he moved on with his life.

He is a logical and calm person who often performs well under pressure, and have since then put a rein on his anger management issues. He is keenly observant and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

He has encountered supernatural entities before and has, at many points in time, found himself at either side of the situation; be it helping the cultists or fighting against them. He had worked as a Gumshoe private eye during the 1920s to the early 1940s, experienced the ups and downs of The Great Depression; witnessed the start of WWII, as well as the birth of the atomic bomb. He was once a part of the New York police force during '40s as a consulting forensics handwriting analyst, and he has some expertise in cryptoanalysis due to his immense understanding of the English Language.

He has since published his life story as a moderately successful author under the title 'Living through history: A memoir of the past' (2010) and an extremely obscure reference book of Esoteric Studies and Occult tentatively named 'Encyclopedia Dæmonica' (1990). Since then, he has met the love of his life, Heidi Smith, and they were happily married for more than fourty years before his wife suffered from cancer, and died after a five year battle in the medical wards. For the remainder of his life, Tobias Jerkins never remarried and concentrated his efforts to raising his children, one of which happened to be Rachel Parker. He has three adopted grandchildren, Karen Parker (17 turning 18), Fredrick Parker (12), and Daniella Parker (8).

He has many contacts from his old days, though many has either died, gone insane or disappeared, but he has built a dark network of whistleblowers, cultists, war veterans, and old government operatives that he had not contacted in many years. However, some of them might still be willing to have a quick chat about the good old days over a satellite phone.

He treasures the old family photo from his youth and still places it in his wallet to be taken with him wherever he goes. He no longer drives, as his physical body no longer allows him to do things with the same strength and vigour as when he was young, but he is still capable of many things.

Phobias & Manias:
  • He is a worrier who is slightly nervous about the safety of his family and friends. While he wouldn't go to extreme length or personal sacrifice to help strangers, he is often willing to lend a shoulder.
  • He suffers from a classic case of PTSD.
  • He is terrified of hounds and dogs from past experiences, and would often attempt to stay away from them whenever possible.
  • He is particularly nervous around flames and open fire as he had experienced many unfortunate incidents surrounding flames.
  • He is often wary, and somewhat cautious towards strangers, while he would be willing to help someone he doesn't know, he will always make sure they don't get the chance to back-stab him.
  • When he gets nervous, he will starting stuttering and slurring his speech. An unfortunate side-effect of being too old.
