Ch 1a - Entering the Hotel (Bernard, Vivienne, Margery, Ed.)

On the lunar calendar, it is the twelfth of July, 1920; in three days' time, the good people of China will celebrate 中元節, the festival of the dead. The great festival is an ancient tradition shrouded in dark rumours and whispered tales. Now, this festival will be celebrated publicly in Peking city, open to the gazes and inquiries of foreigners. During this month, the 阴气, the aura of death, is at its strongest; it will be during this month that the dead may influence the living realm with an eldritch plot of horror and madness...

Ch 1a - Entering the Hotel (Bernard, Vivienne, Margery, Ed.)

Post by HelplessBystander »

Midnight Hotel, Wuyie Street, Peking. 9th July, 1920 (3 days to go)

The intrepid travellers found themselves on the happy side of Peking, intermittent gasps of people walking in the streets, blending into the background. The residents of this great Chinese city was energetic, but not visibly so; a kaleidoscope of emotions could be observed on streets, with even the curious sight of a man breaking down right in front of them. It would be quite easy to chalk this up to the pressure of city life.

A turn from the clean streets into the squalid corner reveals an unassuming hotel going by the charming name of The Midnight Hotel. From what you gather, it's a nice place stuck with a poorly-translated English name. A few floors, good interior design, the works, really.

"Ni Hao, what can I do for you ladies and gentlemen?" A man said, standing behind the register and a stack of books.

Of course, of course, my good sir. It is somewhat rude of me to ask, but is there any particular arrangements of the rooms that you would like, my good sir? I would recommend the second floor rooms, as they have a marvellous view of the streets below and they are a sight to kill for. It would only be around $50 per night. What do you say?" The man said, looking at Edward with a friendly smile.

OOC:   Edward Carver has unlimited funds from his newspaper, if that's OK with the GM. :)
Edward Carver thanks the man at the desk and accepts the fees proposed.

He then gathers his things and proceeds to move to his room.

Bernard stands at the door, looking out into the street as he awaits his turn checking in. He was disturbed to see a man breaking down right in front of them as they traveled to the hotel. It is clear that the people need medical missionaries such as himself and he makes a mental vow to get settled in quickly.

Margery doesn't take much notice of the man; she's used to odd sights on these streets, especially poeople worse the wear. She is rather surprised that Miss Grey would choose such a dowdy hotel to stay in; not something rather more upmarket on Dragon Street. But when it is her turn to check in she says to the concierge,
"Please could we have a suite with two connecting rooms, a sitting room and at least one bathroom? Or failing that, your best room with a bathroom and another smaller one near by." She looks at Miss Grey to see if that would be satisfactory.

Vivienne nods. She can certainly afford the extra expense of a suite or a second room.

The attendees had shown you to your rooms, Ed set up his camera equipment and Vivienne & Margery unpacked their luggage in their room. Night is approaching.
OOC:   It's fine. Ed can buy as much as reasonably possible. He won't be out on the streets, but he won't be able to buy a stockpile of guns and mafia connections either. Also, due to the fact that it's connected to Ed's backstory as a journalist from a newspaper, dubious purchases that won't look good on a finance report probs require a luck roll.

Anyways, sorry it's taken me so long to get out of my writing rut. Hit writer's block a while back, heavy apologies for the snail-paced plot. Please roll Listen.

"Yes, it's a lot better than I was expecting, Maam." Says Margery as she busily put's Vivienne's clothes away. "You have some lovely dresses, Maam. Shall I order some tea? You might like to have it at the window there?"

"Thank you, Margery, I'd like that," says Vivienne, taking a seat by the window. "You don't need to call me Ma'am. Miss Vivienne will do, or simply Miss if you prefer." I'm far to young to be referred to as "ma'am," she thinks.

Margery,You hear sounds of creaking wood from within the walls, they sounded like footsteps...
Failed Listen Roll,You do not hear anything strange or abnormal, and are, in fact, feeling a little drowsier than usual. Maybe it is time to go to bed.

"Right you are, Miss. I'll turn down the bed directly. You must be tired after that long journey."
Margery closes the wardrobe door and then stops, listening. She puts her ear to the wall. "Miss, is there a room next to this one? I can hear creaking footsteps just the otherside of this wall but they don't sound quite right.

Margery,There is no room to next to yours. You remember that, when you entered, that your room was the first on the left, with no rooms preceding yours. Is there anything else that you would like to do?

Margery walks to the door and pops her head out for a moment to look at the layout of the corridor. She closes the door carefully and then goes to turn down the bed, she looks disconcerted and ill at ease.
