“Enough with the niceties!” mutters Ann Veronica.

She fetches a cup of water from the bathroom, returns and throws it in the sleeping Diane’s face.

Absolom Peredue Somerhayes

Finishing his silent prayer, Absolom staggers to his feet and holding the small battered edition of the King James Bible aloft as if it were a shield, and begins to back towards the door. His mind still reeling from the earlier event the sudden development with Bidwell has no effect other than to add urgency to his movements.

He falls to the ground and rolls away from the hideous thing, just barely getting out of the way of its deadly tentacles.

Diane keeps her wits about her in spite of the horror. "Quick, back inside!" she cries, taking advantage of the creature's clumsiness to flee back into the house. She knows they don't stand a chance out there. "The cube is the key, he said! We've got to get it, it's our only chance!"

Ann Veronica

Briefing a sigh of relief now that Diane is awake, Ann Veronica bombards her with questions.

“What’s wrong? What were you dreaming about? Why is everyone sound asleep?”

Absolom Peredue Somerhayes

As he backs to the door through which they came he sees the result of being struck by one of the creatures. Swallowing nervously his racing mind hears Mr Copeland’s urgent yell, what can I do he thinks as he tries to calm his mind. With sudden steely resolve he hurls the small bible towards the portal in an attempt to close this gateway to Hell.

Thanks to Cecil's help, James is momentarily able to get back to his feet again. However, one of the creatures manages to wrap a tentacle around his ankle, sending him once more crashing heavily onto the floor. Realising the extent of his injuries, and the hopelessness of the situation, James feels like he's about to pass out...

Diane sits straight up, startled. "Thank you, Miss Poole," she says. "I was having a nightmare. We were having the seance again, and we were all there except for you. Even Bidwell was back, in his own body. He had the cube, and he used it to open up a tunnel of some sort and told us to behold Juk-Shabb the Great Old One, the god of Yekub. All these worm-like creatures with tentacles came at us. I ran away, but they were all over the place outside too, destroying the city. I went back in to try to get the cube, and that's when I woke up." She gasps. "The others, could they be having the same nightmare? We should wake them!"

Ann Veronica listens in amazement to Diane’s story. She helps her out of bed.

“Quickly then, get more water and let’s wake them up!”

She gets more water and then runs to the next bedroom.

Gordon realizes that only an immense stroke of luck has kept him from being slaughtered by these evil creatures. He scrambles to his feet and rushes back into the house; it has to be safer inside than outside.

Just as the worm-creature is about to crush Professor Powell to a certain death, as Reverend Somerhayes hurls his bible, as Mr. Copeland attempts to help the stricken Professor, and as Mr. McKerry dashes back toward the house, abruptly the investigators find themselves lying in bed, back in one of the guest bedrooms of the Bidwell House, coming awake with their faces wet. The quick-thinking Miss Poole and Miss Siddons stand over you with an empty glass of water. You remember then, arriving back at the house with the others and retiring to bed. It was all a dream, a nightmare.

Or was it?

The night slowly turns to morning. Those of the guests who are able -- or willing -- to return to sleep experience no further such terrors.

In the pale daylight the Bidwell house stands unchanged. The investigators are, of course, already familiar with the layout of the house, comprising two floors. On the ground floor is the foyer; the parlor; the dining room; the ballroom; the kitchen; the pantry; the butler's room; the scullery; the laundry, and storage for china and linen. On the upper floor is to be found the library; the den; the conservatory; the study; the master bedroom; several guest bedrooms; two water closets, and linen storage.

You are not long risen when there comes a frantic knocking upon the door.

James is in bed, still not completely recovered from last night's ordeal. When the knocking at the front door reverberates through the house, he groans, pulls the pillow over his head and mutters "Leave me alone..."

Ann Veronica is awake. She slept for four hours, which was enough.

The knocking interrupts her tea-making. Mindful of the Chinese who were looking for her, she takes a large carving knife which she holds behind her back, and goes to answer the door.

Absolom Peredue Somerhayes

Absolom sits in a large stuffed armchair reading his Bible as he tries to come to terms with the events of the night. Had it been no more than some nightmare which seemed to infect them all. Or was it the result of some narcotic administered to them unawares. Whatever it was one thing was for certain, sleep had been far from his mind. Therefore he was awake and alert when the sound of the frantic knocking broke the relative silence of Bidwell’s house.
Who the devil can that be and why such insistent knocking? He thinks as he carefully closes the small Bible and puts it back in an inside pocket before beginning the trek to the front door.
