Karl Anderson: Room 3

It hurts – oh God it hurts. And it’s so dark. If only you can straighten your leg or move your arm...

Karl Anderson: Room 3

Karl Anderson: Room 3

Aching all over from the crash, no doubt, and with the beginning of a headache throbbing at your temples, you head for the door marked #3. You swing the door open and are confronted with a motel room that is almost the mirror image of the one you had just left. Instanly you hear a voice seemingly coming out of thin air, it is however a voice you recognise – that of Rutiger Paddington, it has the edge of rising panic attached to it.

“What do you mean the door is locked?”
“I mean it’s closed and locked. I can’t open it” the voice is that of Tod Guzman.
“Wait, where is...?” calls a female voice distinctly like Gracie Gunn’s.
“What the hell is that?” shrieks another female’s voice. This last voice is followed by a cacophony of voices, screams and shouts, “Run!!”, “Get away from it!!”, “How do we get out?” and such. The final voice you hear is loud, painfully loud, distinctly cold and alien, “DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?”

With that the voices are gone, the only sound is a distant television and the noises coming from those left in room #6. You look around with a start, but you are alone in an empty motel room. On the bed rests a partially unpacked suitcase and a travel bag decorated with a Star Wars motif. On the bedside table, beside the lamp, rest a silver laptop the cover of which has been stencilled with some esoteric design. Stacked in a neat pile on the mirrored chest of drawers are several slim volumes The whole room smells of neatness and stale aftershave...

Karl Anderson

Karl steadies himself, sits on the bed & tries to get his bearings.

"What the hell was that?!?" he mutters, while rubbing his temples. He looks around the room again. Were those books his? What was he reading?

Then he picks up the laptop, studies the stencilled design, flips it open & tries to sign-in...

Head now throbbing wildly and small flickers of light bursting at the corners of your eyes, you attempt to focus on the laptop its screen demanding an eight letter password. For some reason the word ‘congress’ springs into your mind. With a shrug of shoulders you type the letters.

The screen changes and you see what looks like a younger, fresher, version of yourself surrounded by other smiling people. The abundance of university gowns and caps would suggest that the photo comes from some academic period of your life. Several names flood into your mind, James, Alison, Avery. But you cannot put the names to the faces.

Several folder titles appear on screen, the majority seem to be dealing with various subjects, mainly historical or litery. However one is marked emails and contains several letters showing that you have been in contact with many academic institutions across the world and seem to be acquainted with several highly qualified academics in the history and literature world. A couple of these emails seem to be about the Cooper House, but there is nothing of use in them besides what you have already seen.

The books are three leather bound volumes dealing with tales of the supernatural in the State of Michigan. But nothing can be found about any houses in this area, the nearest ‘haunting’ seems to deal with a lake some thirty miles to the east.
As the headache increases in intensity the small motel bed looks more and more inviting, as does the shower in the adjoining bathroom...

Karl is tempted by the shower, but decides to flake out on the bed.

'Congress, congress' fills his mind as he falls asleep. He tries not to think about the cold, alien voice...

Sleep comes easy, but it is not a restful sleep, Your sleeping mind is filled with dark images, you toss and turn without waking as dream after dream permeates your subconscious mind. But they are not dreams to leave memory, merely a never ending procession of images, until that is ;

You move through a city that is completely empty of life, but it is far from silent. All around you the cries of sadness and terror can be heard, but there is no sign of those doing the weeping. While the strange city is lifeless, you are not alone. All around you are unmoving dark figures, but you know they are not ones who are crying. Time and time again, you reach out to the dark shapes, only to watch in horror as they crumble to dust and ash at your slightest caress. Then suddenly, someone is touching you, on the shoulder from behind. You twirl about, ecstatic to find another living soul in this dead place, but all joy vanishes when you see a figure clad in tattered, yellow robes, wearing a cracked, pallid mask. It asks you: “Tell me, have you seen the Yellow Sign?”

You awaken with a start a half formed scream of terror on your dry, cracked lips. Your watch, still fastened to you wrist shows the time as 07:13 and the date 18th September.

Karl does a double take at his watch, tapping it to check it's not broken. "No way."

He stumbles into the bathroom and rinses his face with cold water. "What the hell's going on?"

He's had about as much as he can take. Has he seen the Yellow Sign? He examines the stencilled design on his laptop. Is this it?

Quickly dressing, he leaves his room to see if anyone else is up and about. Taking a deep breath, he makes his way to room 6 and knocks on the door.
