[IC - Chapter One] We Are Not Alone

The group of Oliver, Smalls, Tom, Amadeus and Dowson-Frost is heading back to the power room, to reactivate the generator. As soon as they re-enter the docks area, though, the lights come back to life on their own. "So it's not broken, I guess. Just unst-", mutters Dowson-Frost, but he stops suddenly as you all notice Stogie on the other side of the docks, some thirty meter away from your position. He has just emerged from behind the bulk of the damaged submarine, and he's running and screaming, the gun held up as he seems about to shoot in the air.

Oliver grips his pistol and looks around for any danger. "What happened?" he asks Stogie.

Amadeus took a shaky breath and looked around uncomfortably. As though the damp atmosphere could be dispelled by pure will alone. He stared at Stogie blankly for a moment, and then turning back to Oliver with some paradoxical combination of calm and panic mixed together seamlessly within like a cup of hot coffee and chocolate syrup on a hot summer day. With some degree of control within his voice, Amadeus said,"I don't know. But, iz probably someting vvvvery bad. Anyvun up for ze explosives?"

"I've got one of the Panzerfausts," says Oliver, "but let's find out what the threat is before we start firing them about with mad abandon."

Amadeus considered the situation, and then proceeded to snort in derision for a bit. "Aye, and I know exactly how to exactly how fix dis."

He turned towards the general direction they ran from and bellowed from the top of his lungs with a gusto. "EVERYVUN WHO IZ OUR ALLIEZ, GET DOWN! VE ARE ABOUT TO THROW ZE EXPLOSIVES!! KOME OUT VHERE VE CAN SEE YOU; IF JOU ARE OUR ENEMY; COME OUT VHERE VE CAN SEE JOU. VE NEED A TARGET TO AIM!" He looked around and heard his voice reverberating in the silence, before saying with a much more profound calmness in his voice, "Zat should about do it. Oliver,
steady jour handz. Ve might have a few guests."

In another moment Smalls would find Amadeus' request to their enemies pretty funny, but right now he is too worried with what he is seeing. "Stogie, where's Nick??" He shouts while getting the machine-gun ready. Aiming at Stogie's general direction he says to the others: "Something's wrong. Why is he screaming like that?"

Stogie, with blood running down the back of his pants and leaving a trail of bloody shoe prints behind him, points the 45 backwards behind his head and fires a shot blind into the darkness behind him. His face is white, smeared with blood and etched with pain.

"There's a friggin' Nazi monster behind me somewhere!! It's killed Nick and it's carrying his head, and a whole bunch of other heads!! I dunno!" This is said in a harsh yell.

Stogie legs it to the others then spins to face back the way he came. He drops to one knee, gasping for breath and leaking messy blood everywhere. At this point, the ghastly slash across his back, with the odd pinky-white rib possibly visible, will become evident...

With a restrained grunt of pain, Stogie takes the panzerfaust, holstering his 45 to do so.

"I didn't stick around to see if it was following me or I'd be kindling by now. It certainly came outa the vent and into that room I was in. Watch out with any of the vents, it can get through them."

Everything is still silent around you. Only your frenetic words break the stillness of the atmosphere inside the base. But no one, or no thing, comes into view. After a few minutes, it seems you are safe - for now.
Oliver,As you treat Stogie's wound, you find a slimy ichor around it, yellow-ish in color. It sticks to your fingers when you touch it, but it can be easily removed with water.
Successful Occult Roll,You heard somewhere that some occult Nazi secret society was working on resurrecting the dead. Some say they succeeded, although not entirely: they created monsters made of dead bodies fused together, like a Frankenstein, but ten times worse.

"Any time, Stogie," says Oliver. "You're right, we don't have time. Find what we need and get out, that's what we should do. Setting a rally point is a good idea too. How about right by the blast door in the docks? That's probably the way out. We should open it a crack while the juice is on to confirm that, and so that we'll be able to get out of here in the event that the power goes out again."

You walk to the closed blast door in the docks area, operating the controls to open it. The door opens with a loud metallic noise, as you look behind your back nervously. Past the door, there's another long corridor, with another blast door on the right, and two simple wooden doors on the left. About twenty meters from you, the corridor turns right.

Now that you're here, and with the lights on, you can also see two more blast doors on the far side of the dock past the submarine. Dowson-Frost whistles and says: "That's lot of space for a simple submarine base. I don't think we are wasting our time here".

The room you've just entered in is almost completely empty, with only a few empty lockers as furniture, lined along one wall. There's an air vent, on the ceiling, in one corner, but at the moment there doesn't seem to be anything strange, or threatening, coming out of it. There is evidence of a large fire having been set in the centre of the room.

The corridor on the right is, as expected, empty. There are six more wooden doors to be seen, three on each side. At the end of the corridor, there's another steel door, operated with a wheel. There's a small circular porthole on this door, although from this far it doesn't really allow you to peek inside.

It's again one empty room after another. These seemed to be room for officers, providing some more comfort for their inhabitants than the common barracks Stogie and the others discovered earlier. There's also a room with a couple of tables and a little kitchen, probably an officers' mess.

With all the doors along the corridor open, only the steel one at the end remains closed. You then begin to hear a tapping sound coming from the ceiling above you, in the middle of the corridor. "What the hell...?", murmurs Dowson-Frost, raising his weapon. But there's only this tapping, answering back. It slowly moves along the corridor, towards where Stogie is.

As soon as you start making noise and screaming, the tapping turns into a loud slamming, and then outright banging. There are metal plates on the ceiling, and they start to shake and shudder. In a matter of seconds, the rivets holding them together start giving away, as the ceiling itself deforms and seems about to cave in.

Stogie gets to the door and looks through the porthole. On the other side, there appears to be a mess hall for the troops. It looks empty. There are two more doors you can see, simple wooden doors, one on the wall right opposite to this entrance, and the other one on your left. Unfortunately, there is also an air vent, on the far corner from your position, near one of the two doors.

Stogie quickly points to a door already opened, that his team-mates can see. He then points in the direction of each of the two 'new' doors. Then he swaps to his rifle, points it at the vent, then with his off-hand mimes to be quiet then that he will be watching the vent.

Hopefully, the team will be able to put most of the pieces together from there...

As soon as you're in position, you open the door and get ready to storm the room. It turns out there's no need for violence, as you enter an empty larder. This is the only good news though, as the room is filled with food that had weeks if not months to rot. The stench is simply unbearable, and it quickly fills the other room too.

Oliver and Amadeus fall on their knees, emptying their bowels as the terrible smell overpowers them. Meanwhile, Tom heads to the other door, while Dowson-Frost crosses the room to reach him and give him cover. The two nod to each other, then Tom pushes the door open with a quick kick. On the other side there appears to be just a simple kitchen, fully equipped but abandoned in disarray.

Suddenly there are more sounds coming from the air vent. You hear booming sounds, one after the other, of something heavy making his way towards the exit without worrying about making noise. And a more subtle, disgusting sound, like something slimy oozing in great quantity between two moving surfaces. It's getting closer, and closer.
OOC:   Amadeus and Oliver can't yet act in any way, and will need help to move. Without help, they can at best crawl a few meters.

OOC:   Ok, I think maybe I wasn't totally clear in describing the area. You currently ARE in the mess hall. You were coming from the corridor and opened the steel door with the porthole, that led into the mess hall, where the air vent is. Stogie stayed near the door, keeping an eye on the air vent, while the rest moved to open the remaining doors. Amadeus has most likely stayed behind, next to Stogie and in the corridor. Oliver moved to the door to the larder, and that's where he felt ill. Tom and Dowson-Frost moved to open the last door, to the kitchen.

So if you want to take repair behind the steel door, you have to head back to the corridor where you originally come from, and then close the door behind you. Sorry again if I wasn't clear. We can trace back a few posts to when you started hearing the noises, although a simple edit would be enough to make sense of them. I have added a small map to make things clearer. All doors are currently open.

Amadeus looks through the porthole and soon wishes he hadn't. The air vent bursts open and a creature comes out of it. It all seems unreal, but it's happening in front of your eyes. The 'thing' is a mass of flesh and bones and cartilage, all massed together, fused together, like a mad experiment gone wrong. And it's moving, flexing half-formed muscles and leaving behind a trail of liquid that is half blood and half ichor. It has a dozen legs protruding out of its body, and other appendages, many of them ending in a long fang or some other lethal edge. There are also arms, and even organs protruding out - hearts, lungs, all moving and beating and pulsing. And heads, at least a couple of dozen heads, one of which is that of Nick, now looking at the world with dead and empty eyes.

Silently, you walk back through the corridor and past the blast door into the docks area. The submarine lies half-broken in the water, where you left it. You could access it through the collapsed derrick, or by swimming to the hole in the front cargo door.

Stogie, Amadeus and Oliver set foot on the huge submarine, feeling small like ants on the back of a big dog. Their footsteps on the steel echo in the large empty space of the cavern, causing all kinds of dangerous thought to float in the back of their minds. What if there is another monster lurking around? Maybe waiting for its preys inside the mortally wounded submarine, or silently stalking the waters around it. What if a dozen eyes are watching every movement from one air vent on the ceiling?

The conning tower is about twenty meters away from the derrick. As the hole is not easily reachable from here, especially without using a rope, that seems to be the easiest way of access to the inside. Careful not to slip, and fall into the icy waters, you walk towards it. A quick inspection shows that the hatch offers no resistance and could be quickly opened.

Meanwhile, Tom, Smalls and Dowson-Frost keep watch. Everything seems calm for now.

The flashlight reveals a ladder going down about 6 meters into the conning tower of the submarine. As the submarine is partially lying on one side, it would not really be a vertical descent, and you think walking on the inside is going to be an awkward business. Plus, at least part of the interior is flooded, as water entered through the hole in the front cargo door. You wait a few seconds for any reaction from the inside, but you see no movement. No man in sight - and more importantly, no monsters.

Oliver tries to remember the layout of the submarine they used to get here, and he opes that it might be similar, at least in principle, for all existing submarines - or at least for this one. It turns out they are not so different. After a few minutes of exploration, the group reaches the command room of the submarine. The room is a mess - apparently, when the Germans abandoned the submarine, they did all they could to render it inoperable. All navigation and control instruments have been damaged or even removed, and even without considering the huge hole in the hull, this submarine would never be able to sail in its current state.

Then you notice a very strange device, like no other you've seen before. It is spherical in shape, about fifty centimeters of diameter, with lots of gauges and dials with no apparent purpose. The device is clearly a later addition to the command room, and was riveted to the inner bulkhead. It is unlabeled, although you notice that it has been placed near other navigation instruments, suggesting a similar use. While the device is scratched and dented here and there, it seems it was robust enough to survive the attentions of the retreating nazis.
Successful Electrical Repair or Navigate Roll,The device most definitely is a navigation instrument. You are not sure about its specific use, but it is definitely not for standard underwater operations.
Electrical or Mechanical Repair (no roll needed),The device is more or less structurally intact, and probably usable with minor repairs (assuming its use can be understood). Still, at least a day of work would be required to remove it from its current position without damaging it.

Tom, Smalls and Dowson-Frost

Outside the submarine, several minutes pass without anything happening. You have no idea how long it will take to explore a submarine this big, but after almost an hour of waiting, you are starting to worry. Knowing that some kind of monster is moving around the base is certainly not helping your nerves. So, when you hear a metallic sound, like something falling from a great height and hitting the floor, you almost jump and open fire with your weapon. It's hard to tell exactly from where the sound came, but it seems a corner of the dock behind the submarine, currently outside your field of view.

Inside the submarine, Amadeus gets to work with the tools provided by Stogie, but it definitely looks like it will be a long work. At least for the moment, though, there's no need for multiple people working on it - in fact, it's a work better done by a single person.

Outside the submarine, Smalls, Tom and Dowson-Frost get their weapons ready. After the sudden noise, silence has fallen again. The lights are flickering again, though. On, then off, then on again. Hopefully the generator won't die off. It would certainly be troublesome if it did.

Amadeus shudders at the noise, but continued his work. Gesturing to the others that he can do this along.

With gusto, he started work, determined to hold it together until they return back to a safer area...wherever that is at this point. He wanted nothing more than to take a good hot showers and to sit down reading whilst drinking tea. He sighed slightly as wondered what kind of Faustian bargain had he made to deserve all this. A monster hunting him down, grouped with soldiers with more experience and courage than him, and committing actions that are normally out of character for him.

No rest for the damned. he thought grimly, as the rhythmic thumping noise tapped away at the edge of his awareness.

Oliver also has his pistol in hand. He leads the way to where he expects the captain's cabin - such as it is on a vessel this small - to be.

Oliver and Stogie walk through the dark corridors of the submarine, lighting their way with the flashlights as they go. After a few minutes, they enter what appears to be the captain's cabin. It appears that this cabin was not messed with as the Nazis fled the base, and there are still maps, and logs, and books around. Apart from that, it is a common cabin, tidy and well-kept, definitely more comfortable than your average sailor's bunk bed in a common room.

Meanwhile, Amadeus keeps working on the strange device. He is making progress, but more time will be required to remove it safely.

"Don't suppose you know any German?" asks Oliver, gathering up the books, logs, and maps. He takes special care to collect anything that might be a code book, as well as the Enigma code machine if it's still present. "If not, I'm sure Amadeus does." He examines the maps, from which he should still be able to determine something even without knowing German.

Outside the submarine, Smalls, Tom and Dowson-Frost get their weapons ready. After the sudden noise, silence has fallen again. The lights are flickering again, though. On, then off, then on again. Hopefully the generator won't die off. It would certainly be troublesome if it did.
Successful Listen Roll (only those outside the submarine),You can hear a vaguely disturbing sound, of something moving. Not metallic, definitely. Something organic. It's rhythmic, and slightly nauseating.
Smalls Kemp

As the sudden sound echoes around the dock and fades away, Smalls loosens the grip on his gun. "Looks like we're OK for now." He looks up, checking the lamps as the light starts to flick again. He's uncertain, but he thinks he's hearing something. He closes his eyes, trying to identify the odd, disturbing sound. "Are you guys hearing this? It's like a rhythmic sound... something moving... Do you hear it?" He asks his companions.

Outside the submarine, Dowson-Frost nervously holds his gun, looking between the submarine and the docks: "It might be that thing... and I'd gladly fall back... except they're still in there. Not much we can do, right?"
He moves to cover behind a broken crate and readies his weapon. It's then you hear another loud sound, again, like something falling and hitting the ground. Except this time it doesn't sound like something metallic. It sounds like... a body. A dead body, most likely - judging by the sound, it must have fallen for at least ten meters.

Amadeus can read the logs and the books, but it's surely going to take some time - and he has to decide whether to keep working on the machine, or read them. Meanwhile, Oliver discovers something interesting on the maps: there appear to be a Nazi base in Antarctica. It's identified as Richter Base and, as far as you know, no one inside the Allied forces knows of it.

Oliver shows the map to the others. "I don't need to be able to read German to know that this is some kind of base in Antarctica," he says. "I've never heard of it before, and as far as I know, the Allied military don't know about it either. The High Command will be very interested to see this. Let's concentrate on getting the wotsit out of here. Amadeus can always read the logs and books later, when we're somewhere safe."

Tom, Smalls and Dowson-Frost take position outside the submarine, and just in time. First they hear the sound: something moving... sliding... skittering... all these at once are summoned in your mind as you hear it getting closer. Then it appears - as if coming out of a nightmare, even worse than your friends's description. And bigger, somehow. Stogie and Amadeus described it as slightly bigger than a human being, but this thing you're seeing is larger than a full grown bear. It is made of pieces of human beings, heads and arms and legs, and even organs protruding in a senseless chaos. It leaves behind a trail of blood and slime, which somehow seems to facilitate its movement, as it slide over the surface faster than a thing so big and distorted should normally be able to. Several long bones protrude off its body, some just standing there, some acting as legs and ticking as they hit the pavement. Half a dozen heads turn towards you, fixing their gaze on all three of you at once, and several mouths start screaming all at once.
Smalls,If I remember correctly, it's your first time seeing the monster. If so, roll against a Sanity loss of 1d6/1d10. After that, you can take an action as normal.
Tom instinctively fires his panzerfaust, but haste does not go along well with precision. The projectile flies high and explode against a wall, the booming explosion echoing in the large, empty space. Luckily, it seems to distract the thing for a second, allowing Dowson-Frost to take him and release a short burst of fire on the thing. The bullets hit the monstruosity and pierce its flesh, as more blood and slime splatter on the floor. The thing screams, as its attention focus back on you. It seems ready to charge.

Inside the submarine, you hear the explosion and the gunfire coming from outside.

While Amadeus keeps working, entirely oblivious to the crisis unfolding around him, Stogie and Oliver run wildly through the passageways inside the submarine, trying to reach the docks as quickly as possible. Another explosion resonates from outside, as they increase their pace even more, breathing heavily, heartbeat racing up.

Outside, the creature rushes towards Tom, smashing a couple of crates in its way, before jumping and trying to bite off the man's face. Luckily for him, Tom dodges the attack, but as the creature lands behind him, it extends a long bone whip, ending in an edge, and slashes through one of his legs. Tom screams as he limps away, firing a volley of bullets at the monster from his machinegun, but missing the target. Meanwhile, the monster starts trembling and shaking, as several other bone whips protrude from its body, extending in all directions. One of them crosses the air towards Smalls, slicing one of his shoulders with a superficial cut.
Oliver and Stogie,You can join the combat from next round.
Smalls,You lose 3 Hit Points.

Stogie and Oliver emerge on top of the submarine and are frozen on the spot for a second. On the docks, there is only madness. A large monster - the one Stogie saw earlier, but now much bigger - is at the center of it all, screaming from a dozen mouths as several long tentacles fall down crashing on wood and steel. Around it, Smalls, Tom and Dowson-Frost are scattered around, trying to run for cover behind some of the abandoned wooden crates on the docks, even though the creature is easily destroying them with its deadly appendages. As you watch, the monster dashes forward, slamming into Tom and pinning him to the ground.
Mr. Handy,This should be your first time seeing the creature. Roll against a 1d6/1d10 Sanity loss.

A volley of bullets crash into the creature, coming from two directions, as Dowson-Frost also opens fire from the other side. Blood and slime sputter around, but the creature barely seems to notice, as it extends its jaws and swallows Tom's head whole. The man's screams rise in intensity just before the creature's mouth closes on him, then end abruptly. And just when you think the image before your eyes couldn't possibly get any worse, the thing starts chewing, with a disgusting sound that you're sure will haunt you to your tombs.

While eating its victim, the creature remains still, even its deadly appendages fall on the floor and slide around harmlessly.
Smalls,Bullets do seem to be hurting the creature, but not as much as you could have expected. It seems the creature's structure, or lack of it to be more precise, is absorbing your shots and lessening their effect.

As you get ready to unleash heavy fire on the creature, it suddenly starts growing. Its flesh tears as it expands, new muscles bursting into life, new organs taking place in completely wrong positions. Its back explodes as two new long bones, leg bones at a first sight, protrude outside as some kind of nightmarish backbone. And finally, you can see the flesh on its right flank shaping up... like a face... like Tom's face! It just emerges there, and it's his face, you are sure of that, watching at you with dead eyes, its mouth open in a silent scream of horror and pain.
Spoiler:
Everyone roll against a Sanity loss of 0/1d6.
Perhaps horrified by the sudden development, your aim is almost comically off, as the grenade flies too far away, and the panzerfausy misses its target, destroying one more section of the dock walls. Meanwhile, Smalls screams as he tries to get more distance between the creature and himself, still shooting like a crazed man. The bullets find their target, but the creature is now ready to bust into action, rushing towards Oliver and Stogie, with its bone whips cutting the air. Oliver dodges the attack, but Stogie is caught near his left shoulder, a violent hit that almost cuts the arm away from the brave soldier.

Stogie screams as he holds his now useless arm to his chest, falling back and as far away as possible from the creature. While he limps away, his face distorted by pain, he grabs another grenade, bites out the pin, and lets it fall towards the monster. The grenade rolls on the ground, ever so slowly, and it stops right next to a couple of large bone-legs. Then it explodes, the sound deafening and the light blinding to all of you standing so close nearby, but for the very first time you can hear the thing screaming - with no small amount of satisfaction. Once you can see the creature again, it has half fallen on one side, its legs completely blown off. But it's just a matter of seconds - suddenly two more bones explode out of his body, pushing it back up.

It screams again, this time in anger, a terrifying but horribly human scream. It looks around, searching for the closest living thing to vent its frustration on. Dozens of eyes focus on Smalls, and the monster jumps at its prey, biting and slashing in a mad frenzy. Blood sprays around from at least a couple of deep wounds. Smalls loses control of its Panzerfaust, that flies towards the ceiling, where it explodes harmlessly. Meanwhile, Dowson-Frost shots another volley of bullets at the creature, but seeing how little damage they're actually doing, throws away his weapon and runs towards one of the Panzerfaust.

Smalls falls down on the ground and starts convulsing due to the shock of his severe injuries. Before the creature can ingest him, too, Oliver finally gets his aim straight with the Panzerfaust. The missile hits the creature on the back, exploding violently and sending pieces of meat and bone flying around. The monster is thrown away a few meters by the explosion, landing violently on the ground. Then it gets back up unsteadily, roaring with anger and something unsettlingly human - hate.

But the creature's roar is suddenly cut short by another explosion, as a second Panzerfaust impacts on the floor near its bone legs, disintegrating a couple of them and sending a cloud of debris hitting its body from below. The impact sends it flying farther away, and crashing against one of the walls, splattering it with blood and pieces of organs. You can hear Dowson-Frost cheering at the sight of his own shot, and for a second you think that is going yo be enough. Surely nothing could sustain two explosions of that kind... surely.

But you realize quickly you've been optimists. Once again, the thing gets up, a mess of bone and muscles and tissues, yet surely walking towards you... and then sprinting up to a charge. Weak and unsteady, it seems to know that the group of soldiers is at the end of their rope, too. It's just a matter of who'll be able to finish the job first. "Fuck this shit... can this thing even die?", Stogie mutters as he readies another grenade. "Fall back. I'll throw this one when he's in range, and then jump into the water... just give me some cover".

The creature starts running again, sprouting a couple more legs of bone out of the bloodied flesh of his body. It accelerates again, howling wildly, aiming for Stogie. You can see the soldier staring defiantly at the monster as he removes the pin and waits for a second... then two... as the creature gets closer and closer, and finally throws it, screaming: "Now!", before jumping in the water. The creature slows down for a second, following the movement of its target with a dozen eyes from half a dozen different heads, and right in that instant, Smalls and Dowson-Frost open fire with their guns, unleashing a storm of bullets on the monster to prevent it from running after Stogie... or charging towards a new target.

The creature stops for a second, more annoyed than actually hurt by the bullets crashing into its body. Then it starts running again... and that's when Oliver's Panzerfaust hits it right in the middle of its nightmarish body. It's just a matter of moments then, as Stogie's grenade explodes as well, unleshing even more devastation on the monster.

And finally, that is enough even for that thing. As the smoke dissipates, there's nothing more of it left - only a large stain of blood, and a few memories for your future nightmares. After the explosions, silence falls on the docks. Some of you can scarcely believe what they saw - or even being alive at all.
