Character Creation

Now, regarding the group of characters, you were assembled by the Allied joint command to investigate a previously unknown, and now abandoned, German submarine base in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Ideally, each of you should be a veteran that found himself "cut-out" from his previous unit (for example, a last survivor, or someone recovering from a long-term injury), or someone used to working alone (like an espionage operative, or a sniper, or pilot, or the sort). This should give the feeling of the Allied scraping the bottom of their resources to assemble an investigation team on a matter that, at least at first sight, seems to be of little importance. The war has been going on for years, and while winning, the Allied are still stretched thin and with more urgent matters than a routine investigation of an abandoned base.

Now, on to the possible professions (for those of you that do not have the Achtung Cthulhu! Investigator's Guide, I'll provide the occupational skills, just ask about the careers you're interested in).

Civilian Occupations
Boffin
Parapsychologist

Military Occupations
Combat Engineer
Medic
Maori (obviously a very particular choice, I'll provide informations on this)
Infantryman
Pilot
Sailor
Sniper
US Marine
Commando
Paratrooper
US Airborne
First Special Service Force

Espionage Occupations
OSS/SOE Operative

Exactly one of you should have some level of knowledge of the Cthulhu Mythos, and at least a direct experience (with a Cthulhu Mythos rating), and belong to one of the occult branches of the Allied intelligence structure (the American Majestic or British Section M).
One more player can have in his background a Mythos experience, but it's not mandatory.
Additionally, one of the characters might be a Soviet soldier sent in to participate in a "joint operation to strengthen the ties of the alliance", which is sort of bullshit and only allowed because, at least initially, the mission is considered to be of little importance. This should open some interesting roleplaying, so I'm giving you the option if you want (onviously not mandatory).

Important
All normal rules from CoC 6th edition apply to character creation. Plus, look in the topic for additional rules for a list of new abilities your character can buy. Feel free to ask me any question regarding the abilities.
Additionally, all your characters have double the normal number of Hit Points.
And finally, I'll give each of you a special talent from the Pulp Cthulhu supplement, at the end of the character creation process.

Could I play as Oliver Carpenter, my character from The Priory and relative of characters I've played in other games? He'd be classified as a Medic, though he has had Commando training and is part of a Commando outfit, and at this point in the war he'd be a Major. I'd need to update his background to reflect the past two years, as well as probably tweak his character sheet. The Priory never was completed, but I imagine that could have given him some Mythos experience.

Yes, it's all right for me. You can probably use the Medic occupation on page 78 of the AC Investigator's Guide (if I remember correctly, you have it right?), but keep in mind that I'm not using the Surgery skill (that I just bundle up with Medicine). I'd like your military rank to be no higher than Captain, if possible. Tweak the sheet as you see fit, adding 1d10 points of Cthulhu Mythos at the expense of the same amount of Sanity.

Yes, I have the book. It's just as well that the Surgery skill is folded into Medicine, as I don't have as many skill points as I'd like anyway. I can still be a Captain at this point. He was a Major at the end of the war in the background I'd established for him, but he could always be promoted after this if he survives. With HP doubled, is healing also doubled, or does it remain the same? Here's the updated character sheet:

Name: Captain Oliver Carpenter

Sex: Male

Birthplace: London, England

Appearance & Personality: Captain Oliver Carpenter is a cheerful man, always ready with a song on his lips (even if he often sings off-key). He is tall, and while he was handsome once, the wounds he suffered during the disastrous Operation Crusader have left him badly scarred. In spite of this, his confidence remains unshaken. He feels he has beaten death, counting the fact of his survival as victory enough. Oliver is daring and courageous, and he often seeks out thrills. For him, the war is the ultimate adventure. He is also a hopeless romantic, certain that when he meets the woman he is destined to marry it will be love at first sight for both of them -and so it was.

Background: It has long been Oliver's dream to become a doctor, and he has spent most of his life preparing to become one. His natural intelligence has helped him excel in his studies, and in 1938 he began his freshman year in Oxford University. The Czechoslovakia crisis unfolded during his first weeks there, and it looked as though war could erupt then and there. He had been prepared to join up if it did, but the start of the war was delayed by eleven months, allowing him enough time to begin his studies and enjoy the last summer of peace in 1939.

When the war did start on September 3, 1939, he rushed to sign up for military service. Because of his high aptitude, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After his training, he was assigned to the Number 2 Commando as a medical officer, and he underwent further training at Achnacarry Castle in Scotland. Though he was far from completing his degree, his skills and knowledge were good enough that he could do the job. After numerous operations in Norway, France, and Belgium in the spring of 1940, his unit was evacuated from Dunkirk. They also saw action in North Africa, and in 1941 they were folded into the newly formed Special Air Service.

Oliver was disappointed that the SAS was used as a decoy designed to mostly exist on paper in order to fool the Axis, but he got to go on enough real missions to keep him excited. Their first one, Operation Crusader, saw them parachute into North Africa in November 1941, where they encountered heavy resistance. Oliver was badly wounded, but he managed to stay conscious and treat his own wounds, then helped to cover his unit's retreat. As a result, he was awarded a medal and promoted to captain. He recovered in time for the SAS's second operation, which was a complete success, resulting in the destruction of three airfields and dozens of aircraft in Libya. With American forces arriving in North Africa in late 1942, victory in that theater was assured. Oliver went back in England on leave, and in 1943 he investigated strangeness at the ruins of Exham Priory that had involved a member of his family twenty years prior. After that, he saw action in Italy.

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, Oliver parachuted into Normandy with his unit, but he was blown off course by the wind and landed badly, injuring his ankle. Fortunately, a French Resistance fighter named Claire Deveraux found him and saved his life from German soldiers. She took him to a safe location where she nursed him back to health, and the two fell instantly in love. Unbeknownst to him, she conceived their son that day. When he was healthy enough, Oliver set off to reconnect with his unit, but he resolved to come back after the war and find and marry Claire.

Oliver participated in the disastrous Operation Market Garden in September 1944, where his medical skills were sadly in demand. and he was also in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945. Afterwards, with the war winding down in Europe, he was transferred to the South Atlantic to help look into an abandoned Nazi base.

Family Members: Oliver was born in late 1919 to Stanley and Meredith Carpenter, conceived not long after his father returned from the last war. He has a younger sister Irene, who is 22 years old. She had started out working as an ambulance driver in London shortly after the war broke out, but starting in 1941 she began to be sent on special assignments she wasn't allowed to talk about to anyone. Their younger brother, Joshua, is 20 and is currently with British forces invading Germany. Stanley is a carpenter from a long line of them (hence the name). He served in the Great War, and he joined up again when this war started. He is a combat engineer. Meredith joined the Women's Land Army.

I suppose we'll need a Pilot, so I can be one. I have the A!C Investigator's Guide, but never had the time to read it, so I don't really know the differences between A!C and CoC character creation.

Hmm, pilot's taken. In that case, I might opt for a US Airborne officer (I enjoyed the Band of Brothers TV series) if that's OK. Cheers, Andy

Ok, those are fine by me. I'll post the details for your occupations as soon as I can. Anyway, character creation rules are the same as a standard CoC game, except for what I wrote in the other topic (particularly, you should check out the additional skills). You can start by rolling your stats and defining a background, including the reason why your character is fighting (I mean, joining up is mandatory, but probably each one has a personal motivation that keeps him going) and what he wants to do once the war is over.

Hey Andy, if you have a special interest in being a pilot, I have no problem in taking another occupation. Just say the word!

No, thank you kindly for the offer but I was really thinking out loud, checking off professions we might want. In all honesty, as a big fan of the Band of Brothers TV series, I am as happy playing an Airborne officer as anything. And one suspects PCs may drop like flies anyway so more than on character through the adventure is always on the cards...

Nope, standard CoC creation, except for the new military careers, obviously, and the additional rules I've posted in the other topic.

I do not have the other book but I can see if they have a pdf to purchase online.

Yes, that is fine, although there is already one character with occult background and experience (the SOE operative played by Mister Ginge). If you go for an academical background, though, you shouldn't overlap too much. Also spend some points in a weapon of choice, as you will need to have at least some combat training to survive the campaign.

Anyway, it's not mandatory for you to have the AC Investigator's Guide ;)

Great! Nerds ftw!

Do I roll first, then assign attributes?

Are there any careers that may be a better fit for the party? I'm a little reticent to try something too combat heavy as combat has always been my Achilles heel in RPGs. Getting into character, I'm golden but learning new systems may take some time.

Well, SIZ and INT are 2d6+6, EDU 3D6+3. Those you just roll. For the other stats, since the careers in Achtung Cthulhu have stats prerequisites, I'll allow you to move around the numbers to fit them. Obviously, only among the stats that roll with the same dices (that is, you can't exchange a result from a 2D6+6 roll with one obtained with 3D6).

You can use the forum dice roller, or an external dice roller like http://orokos.com , where you can just like the results.

Background:
Michael "Stogie" Callahan hails from a large Irish American Chicago family. He left school at 16 to help pay the bills at home and was driving a cab by 20. Stogie enlisted in the Airborne in '41 for the money and prestige, and subsequently worked his way up to the rank of Sgt. He was then very surprised when, despite his limited education, he received a battlefield promotion to 2nd Lt based primarily on his occasional bouts of suicidal bravery. More recently, Stogie was promoted further to full Lt as his contemporaries have been weeded out by enemy fire. Stogie was severely injured by artillery fire and has spent some weeks in hospital, only just released now.

Stogie is short and stocky, with dark brown hair. He speaks with a very working class Chicago accent. Stogie gets his nickname from the lit or unlit cigar always between his teeth.

Stogie joined up early because he figured sooner or later he'd get drafted and better to volunteer for something good, with a nice uniform. And it sure beats being cabby. The extra $50 a month is no bad thing, Ma appreciates it. And bub, do you want to go into battle with highly trained volunteers or sad sack draftees?

After the war's over, Stogie assumes there will be no room for poorly educated junior officers, so his plan is to return to Chicago and open a garage. Ain't going back in the cab though.

Hello there, I haven't seen you in the recruitment topic, but you're welcome to jump in.

There would be room for a Boffin, although all in all I would suggest a more combat-oriented character, as the group seems to be lacking in firepower. Still, pick what you prefer ;)

You need high education and low size, and that's fine. You'd need a 12 in Constitution, but just put the 11 there and it's gonna be ok. You can check the AC Investigator Guide, page 73.

1) Oliver joined the military to defend his country. While victory seems assured now, he desires to see it through the rest of the way.
2) After the war, Oliver wants to find and marry Claire and finish his education to become a doctor

Appearance & Personality: Of average height, black hair and blue eyes, with a slightly dark complexion (it is rumored, though not known for sure by the family, that the old servant Marie was actually William's mother). Has an unsightly scar running the length of the right side of his face where he was bashed in the face by the butt of a German rifle. Almost always reading or writing in his downtime. He has a journal he keeps faithfully as often as possible. Other soldiers in his unit gave him the nickname "Cajun" because of his extremely thick Southern accent, at first he clarified for them that he was not a Cajun, but now he just doesn't mind anymore. After the war, he just wants to get back home and marry his girlfriend Diana. They've talked about moving to New Orleans.
Background: Nicholas Laplanche was born near New Orleans on September 9, 1921 to a family that had seen better days. The Laplanches lived in a run-down plantation near Belle Chasse, many of the servants having left during the Reconstruction. By the 1900s, only one, an old woman named Marie who became Nicholas' nanny when he was born, was left. A studious boy relatively isolated in his home, he read vociferously nearly all the volumes in the library and many from the libraries in New Orleans. The Laplanches continued to live on their plantation until 1937. In that year, Nicholas' father William had to sell off the plantation which still sits abandoned in Belle Chasse, and the family moved into town. After the United States entered the war in late 1941, Laplanche was incensed; and by mid-1942 he had enlisted.
Family Members: William (father, age 42), Maude (mother, age 36), Cecile (sister, age 17), Sam (brother, age 9). There is also Diana Thibodeaux (22), Nicholas' girlfriend.

Tom Major, the son of kind but absent-minded parents, grew up quickly after a harrowing experience with the family pet Alsatian, ‘Daisy’. Leaving the dog breathing its last, and himself scarred for life, Tom subsequently spent his teenage years with a reputation as a loner.

Bullies quickly learned to avoid him, allowing him to follow his own path, which tended towards the esoteric – a trait he inherited from his German grandfather, whose dusty leather-bound books he avidly pored over.

When war broke out in 1939, he was spotted by the SOE and soon fell under the wing of Section M, who recognised his potential. Several missions lead him into Europe and as far afield as Tibet. However, his last mission has left him out of action for several months.

While attempting to disrupt a train in the Alsace region (irony?), rumoured to be carrying a ‘cargo of interest’, he and his team met with more than they could handle. Instead of the ancient artefact they were expecting, they were overrun by something very much alive. Tom was the only one to make it out alive.

After recuperating at Clemens Park in Kent, still unsure of what he saw on the French/German border, Tom now feels ready to get back to duty.

He believes there is something other-worldly behind the Third Reich and that he must do his part to stop them bringing about Hell on Earth.

Not one to think too much of creature comforts or settling down, he expects to carry on in some similar capacity after the war, assuming he is still alive. He fears that Evil never sleeps - it merely yawns.

Leander is the only son of Elizabeth and Peter Kemp, and was born and raised in Grand Prairie, TX. Since childhood he demonstrated great interest in motorized vehicles, spending most of his free afternoons in a garage near his house, where he got the nickname that would accompany him for life - Smalls . At the age of 16 he was a fully-trained mechanic.

His passion for aviation flourish as a teenager, when his father got a job at the recently-inaugurated Curtiss-Wright Airport of Fort Worth-Dallas, and in 1935, by the age of 18, he enlisted in the then-U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) Hensley Field, in Dallas.

All he ever wanted was to fly and feel the motor power under his control, but when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he felt like his country needed him. Shortly after, he was dispatched to Great Britain, where he completed several tours as a fighter pilot. He was present in several operations, including bombings in Berlin and air attacks in Normandy before Operation Overlord.

In June 3, 1944, during Operation Cover in Pas-de-Calais, northern France, Leander's P-51 Mustang was hit. He managed to take his fighter back to the British coast, but during landing - which was more like a half-controlled crash - he broke 2 ribs and had a heavy concussion. The recovery took several months, and he was pretty sure the war was over for him, until an assignment for a mission in South Atlantic took him by surprise.

After the war he wants to end his military career and become a civil pilot. The world is full of beautiful places, and the idea of getting people to see these places pleases him.

Character Name "Doctor" Amadeus Galishoff
Career Parapsychologist
Sex Male
Age 51 (+3 EDU) (-1 CON)
Birthplace Vienna, Austria

Image

Background The Great War was good to Amadeus Galishoff. He wasn't a fighter, no army would have him except for cannon fodder. He wasn't a businessman. He wasn't a Nazi. He was in search of a reinvention. He was tired of his life in Austria. He was tired of his job as a menial hunter and tanner. The chaos of the war gave him plenty of opportunity to change.

When fighting broke out, Amadeus quickly fled to Boston with deceit in his heart. He began claiming he was a psychiatrist with exceptional schooling from the finest universities in Austria. He even claimed he studied under the famed Sigmund Freud, despite only knowing the father of psychoanalysis talked a lot about sex. With his thick Austrian accent, gullible London women believed him and he used this to his advantage. Using the "tips" he learned from Freud, Amadeus began taking advantage of his female patients. His psychiatry sessions quickly became a far more... active practice.

However, the truth was that Amadeus knew nothing of psychiatry and had no desire to learn. Instead of studying his "trade", Amadeus found himself researching the oddities of the human race. His interests were piqued by one of his patients who claimed she was visited by odd creatures in the night. To his amazed curiosity, he uncovered references to similar creatures in obscure tomes in Boston Public Library. Tired of dodging punches and thrown bottles from angry husbands and realizing his advancing age, Amadeus began adapting his practice. He began to see clients who claimed to have witnessed the paranormal.

It was this second change in career that caught the attention of the US Military. Threatening to expose his fraudulent doctorate, the military offered Amadeus a job in their own outfit. Amadeus quickly agreed, seeing shellshocked soldiers with greater fears than mortar shells and machine guns. However, Amadeus knows there's a greater purpose to his new job. He just doesn't know exactly what yet.

@Steveoknox24: I'd say that 75% on Shotgun might be a bit too much if you only have hunting experience. I'd lower it between 60 and 40%, and move those points on some other skills (but feel free to keep it as it is if you want).

Apart from that, we're set, and we can start the game. I'll post the first IC topic later today :D

Each of you gets a special talent from the Pulp Cthulhu rulebook. You can find them here, I'll add them later to your character sheet.
Mr.Handy,Resourceful: always seems to have what they need to hand; may spend 10 Luck points (rather than make Luck roll) to find a certain useful piece of equipment (e.g. a flashlight, length of rope, a weapon, etc.) in their current location.
Steveoknox24,Lucky: regains an additional +1D10 Luck points between chapters.
andyw666, Tough Guy: soaks up damage, may spend 10 Luck points to shrug off up to 5 hit points worth of damage taken in one combat round.
Dr. Bloodworth,Keen Vision: can reroll failed Spot Hidden rolls.
Mister Ginge,Photographic Memory: can easily remember details, can repeat any failed Know roll.
leonardolad,Alert: never surprised in combat.

I'll pick resourceful, I figure it ties into the character as he's a sleaze ball who always seems to get away with his shenanigans.

I also cut shotgun down to 55 and raised track to 49

Well, actually, I had chosen the talents for you, so you would have Lucky, and Mr. Handy resourceful. But if he's fine with swapping them, I have no problem with it.

I have created the first IC topic. Some minor details about the characters need to be finished, but we can start. You can head there and start posting.

All the characters will gather at the RAF base in England, ready for transport to the Southern Atlantic. Once you get there (precisely, to the Job 9 British base on HMS Atlantic Isle), you'll be briefed on the details of the mission from Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Woolley, the highest ranking officer and commander of the base. It should be easy to place all of your characters in Britain at the beginning of the campaign, as that is the hottest front of the war at that time.

This should be all you need to know for now. In case you have questions, feel free to ask me. And obviously, enjoy the game ;)

Oh I don't mind, I just misunderstood I'm fine with either. Which do want, Mr. Handy?

Also, is there a way to make images smaller on the forum? I don't want to clog the forum with this quite large photo. I could try to find another of the guy if not.

I'd prefer to have Lucky anyway, so you can have Resourceful.

To resize the picture, you'll have to copy it into Paint or some other graphic editing program and resize it there, then upload it to the Internet. If you can't upload it, maybe you can find a smaller version of the picture at the same place where you found the original.

May as well put it here, when I was posting my sheet I forgot that current SAN doesn't necessarily equal max SAN, so it should only be 45, if you can edit that for me.

Name: Dr. Kurt M. Donnely, PhD in Biology & Masters in Electrical Chemistry
Age: 48
Sex: Male
Occupation: Boffin- Military Biological Enhancement Research
Birthplace: Boston, Mass.

Characteristics:
STR: 10
CON: 10
SIZ: 10
DEX: 11
APP: 10
INT: 16 (Idea - 80)
POW: 13 (Luck - 65)
EDU: 18 (Knowledge - 90)]

Sanity: 65
Phobias/Mental Disorders: He is terrified of spiders due to night terrors he has had since childhood.
Maximum Sanity: 99
Hit Points: 20 (10)
Magic Points: 13
Damage Bonus: +0

Appearance & Personality: Kurt is of average height and weight with the soft body that would be expected of a man who spends most of his time hovering over books, documents, and diagrams at his desk. Kurt is quite likeable and appears mostly innocuous at first glance. Upon deeper examinations one would find him to be determined and quite industrious.

Background and $: $20,000 Annual Income. Kurt is the child of Irish immigrants who settled in Boston and made a living as launderers. While his upbringing was modest at best, he found that he excelled in school especially in the sciences. While he would normally never be able to afford higher education, he managed to acquire a rich benefactor who invested in his future. Kurt pursued his studies fervently due to his appreciation for the gift of education he was given. While working on his PhD in biology with a focus on comparative anatomy, he was able to work and receive a master’s degree in electrochemistry. While he enjoyed his role as professor of Biology at Boston College, he always made sure to supplement lectures on chemistry to fuel his combined interests. When war struck the world, Kurt sought out a position in the US Military R&D Division in hopes of serving his country. His motives, however, were not entirely pure as he had always had a fascination with enhancing human abilities by fusion with other species. He essentially created his own research division in Biological Enhancement. His first (and only) subject will last with him forever. Sergeant James Kagey came to be Kurt’s very best friend and even taught him to shoot a pistol. Kurt will never out live the guilt of what happened to Jimmy in their efforts to enhance his abilities. After the immediate shut down of his research division, the government found another avenue to use Kurt’s intellect and expertise, interpreting Hitler’s more abnormal science experiments. Kurt has been travelling all over Europe peering through cryptic journals of forbidden Nazi science. While he has vowed to never experiment on humans again, his discovery of a new source of extradimensional power proposed in these journals proves very intriguing.

Family Members: Kurt has an older sister who resides back in Boston with her husband and two adult children (boy and girl). Her husband is an accountant and provides more than what they need. His parents passed away from old age about 5 years ago before he was stationed overseas. He keeps in regular contact with his sister via letters. She often worries for him and his involvement in war. She knows he is not a fighter.

Ah! I like the very pulpy background. Works very well for the campaign. The character is fine for me.

I'm waiting for another player that posted in the looking for replacement players thread. Once he completes his investigator, I'll move the story forward ;)

HI,
the dice have spoken
Str 7
Con 14
Siz 13
Dex 10
App 11
Int 17
Pow 14
Edu 14

Before I go on, are there any occupations, backgrounds or skillsets particularly sought after?
I don't quite have the Edu for my initial idea, of some kind of professorial type with some subject of military importance, intelligence, interrogation, engineering or whatnot. I have not checked all the details of Achtung! yet; I'll read more tonight. If I know what the party requires, I can read more selectively ...

Is character gen pure 6th ed? Or do you use the additional boot camp, training packages, etc from Achtung!?

Is the «Band of Brothers» thread accurate (except for the last character posted in this thread of course)? I had the impression that someone had dropped; does
any dropped character remain?

I think we'll be moving on with these characters:

Oliver
Stogie
Amadeus

Plus the new entries.

You can refer to the first post in this topic for character creation. Namely, all standard CoC rules apply, except that you can double your HP and also spend points on some skills from Achtung Cthulhu (here: https://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/vi ... 409&t=5990).

I think the best choice for the group right now is someone with at least some level of combat expertise, so either an intelligence operative, or a combat engineer would work very well in my opinion. Also any kind of fully military profession would be ok. I'd avoid a full-support character as there are a parapsychologist and a boffin already in the group, so they should provide more academical expertise.

Great. Will this do? Or do we need more combat and less engineer?
DRAFT

I am not sure how income is rolled in 1945, or if it is at all relevant.

Name: Andreas Vaslopoulos
Player: Loke
Age: 24 (born 1921)
Sex: Male
Distinguishing features:
Occupation: Combat Engineer
Current Residence: No fixed abode
Colleges, Degrees: N/A
Birthplace:

Andreas was born to a Jewish family in Thessaloniki in 1921.
Early he took an interest in science and technology, and in 1939
he came to England in 1939 to study engineering at Cambridge.
The studies did not go too well. Andreas is more of the hands-on
practical engineer, than an academic. As the war was looking grimmer,
he found it increasingly hard to focus on the studies, and
at the end of 1940 he volunteered for the British army.
His skills and background earned him a place with the combat
engineers, and during the war he has been working both with
demolition and with electrical and mechanical repairs.
