Jones downed his own drink. "No, unless you count bombers raining death on London," he said while the corporal poured another round. "Of course, I'd been sober then. No doubt I'll be seeing flying elephants soon enough. Why, did you see something?"

He shakes his head.

'No, I didn't see anything, I didn't even see that bastard that downed me.'

Laughing, he sips his glass.

'The shelter I ended up in last night had taken in a German gunner POW. He swore they were attacked by a big flying creature with massive claws.'

John shakes his head and pushes his glass away.

'I can't believe I'm taking this shit serious. I think I need some fresh air....'

"Well, if there's a big flying creature fighting on our side," said Jones, shaking his head, "I'd buy it a drink."

'You'd need more than a glass, Jonesy, I don't even think a bucket would do.'

John laughs again.

He did start to wonder though, if they did truly have a creature up there, wouldn't command warn the officers to not engage it?

Jones chuckled. "Well, the Jerries have all got to be just as crazy," he said, "if they think what they did to London last night is going to make us cry uncle. We'll whip 'em and send 'em running back to their mamas, and then we'll come after 'em and give 'em a taste of their own medicine! Boy, am I glad I got out of that coal mine. Coal mining's a reserved occupation, so I could have stayed in the mine if I'd wanted, but who'd want to? It took some doing to convince the recruiters to take me even so."

'I couldn't stand being underground for that long. I need the wide open sky and the sound of the wind rushing past.'

John looks out the window longingly, the run-way and hangar outside tearing at his heart.


Listen, Jonesy, I need to go, I have to check up on a few things in town. Don't you go crashing that bird of yours, you hear?

"Not a bloody chance, sir!" said Jones, raising his glass in salute. "Don't worry, I won't shoot down all the Jerries in your absence. I'll save you a few."

John shakes Jones's hand as he leaves his wingman at the bar. He swings round his chambers to change into a fresh uniform, checks his papers and his gun, and heads towards London.
He intends to stop by the shelter first, make his way to the warehouse and then drop by the police station.
