IC-Ep 2-After Action Report(John Barrow only)

Post by Mr. Handy »

RAF Biggin Hill - London, England
6:00 AM - Sunday, September 8, 1940

John Barrow made his way back to the RAF base at Biggin Hill, to the southeast of London. The guards at the gate recognized and admitted him. As he made his way across the grounds, David Jones came up to him with a grin. "Good to see you, sir!" he said, clapping him on the back. "Before you buy me that drink you owe me, Major Steadman's going to want to debrief you." Their commanding officer was a decorated pilot in his own right, a certified ace who had been shot down a few weeks ago, losing a leg in the process. He had only just gotten out of the hospital with a prosthetic leg, but he had been eager to return to duty.

John laughed when he saw Jones and clapped him on the back.
'You go get those drinks read, Jones, I'll be right down! Oh, make mine a double!'

In considerably better cheer than when he'd left the bunker, John heads on to Major Steadman's office.

He salutes the wounded ace and adds a 'reporting for duty, sir!'

Major James Steadman, a blond-haired man of about thirty, returned John's salute. "At ease, Group Captain Barrow," he said. "I understand from Flight Lieutenant Jones that you gave as good as you got last night. That's one less bomber that'll be returning. Pity about the Hurricane, but at least it wasn't a Spit. Don't worry about it, even the best of us get shot down." He tapped his wooden prosthetic behind the desk. "Happened to me on Eagle Day. I want to get back up there, but they've got me flying a desk. So, tell me how it went."

'Well, I'm trying not to make a habit of it, sir.'

He smiles, barely suppressing a wince at the thought of not being able to fly anymore.

'We were going after the bombers as ordered, Jones split off to tackle the escorts. Apparently we missed one, because as I was taking down the Heinkell, the Messerschmidt got the drop on me and tagged me. My wings caught fire and I wasn't able to extinguish it, so I aimed it at the Thames.'

John adjusts his jacket and clears his throat.

'That wasn't the only Heinkell to go last night, I hear. I met some civilians after I had landed and they'd captured a German gunner. He said his plane had been attacked by a huge creature. I would have dismissed it as nonsense, but he seemed pretty convinced about it. We're not fielding anything like that, are we?'

Steadman's eyebrows rose at this last statement. "If we were, I certainly wouldn't be allowed to say anything about it," he said. "Personally, I wouldn't mind the help. Well, Jones confirmed your kill of the Heinkel, so that's another notch for you. He also mentioned that he took down the 109 that shot your wing. Did you happen to see that?"

John realized that Major Steadman had been quick to change the subject when he had mentioned the monster sighting.

John tries to not make too much of it, but clearly has a hard time letting go.

He shrugs.
'Well, if there's nothing to it, the German nor the civilians he's been yacking off too won't need to be identified, I take it? Sir.'

'I can confirm Jones' shot, sir, you can write it down.'

"If he wants to spout ridiculous and unbelievable things, let him," said Steadman. "The German can only demoralizes his fellow POWs, and any of our people who heard it, if they even believe such nonsense, would only have their morale bolstered. Well, that's a confirmed kill for Jones. At this rate, he'll be an ace himself in no time. We have to assume the Jerries will be back again tonight. I wish I had a plane for you to fly. I wish I had one for me too. It's not my leg that's keeping me grounded. Hell, Bader still flies, and he lost both of his legs almost a decade ago." John had of course heard of Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, who was an incredibly talented pilot with more kills than John himself had - or Steadman, for that matter. "Frankly, there just aren't enough aircraft to go around. We've got more coming off the line all the time, so hopefully we can replace our losses, but it may be a while before you can get back up there."

John was struck by a sudden pang of jealousy at the thought that Jones could still go up there in his fighter and he himself might be stuck on the ground for an unforeseeable time. He tried to shake the feeling, at least he still had all his limbs...

'Some time, sir? But I'm of much more use up there than I am down here!'

He noticed he was clenching his fists.

'What will my present duties entail then, sir?'

"I hear you, Barrow," said Steadman. "I feel the same way. For now, take a three-day pass. It'll be at least that long before you get a new kite. I'm ahead of you on the waiting list, and mine won't be available until the middle of the week, if then. If your plane isn't ready by the time the pass is up, you'll be training new pilots until it is."

John grins, three days wasn't too bad, it would give him time catch a breath, look into the 'mystery' of that odd group, and maybe have another look at that particularly stunning Asian woman.

'Sir, are you pulling rank to advance your position in the queue? That's very un-British of you.'

He salutes with a smile.

'If that is all, sir, I request permission to have a scotch and disappear for three days.'

Steadman grinned back and returned the salute. "I assure you, Captain, I've done nothing of the sort," he said. "I'm ahead of you in the queue by simple virtue of the fact that I've been waiting longer than you have. Permission granted, have a good time. You've earned it."

'Much obliged, sir.'

John salutes one final time before going out in search of Jones and drink.

John didn't have to go far. Jones was waiting for him outside the front entrance of the building, and he saluted when he saw him. "I believe you owe me a drink, sir," he said with a smile.

'Aye, aye, mister Jones. Lead the way!'

Jones led John to the officers' club, which was practically empty at this time of day. Most of the pilots had probably had their drinks last night and were now sleeping it off in their quarters. However, since there were air patrols on all shifts, the club was open even now. The bartender, a skinny corporal who looked like he needed a shave, stood behind the counter, wiping it with a rag. He saluted when they entered. "What'll it be, sirs?"

Jones saluted back. "I'll have a scotch on the rocks," he said.

'Make that two, Henry, and make them double.'

John grins at Jones.

'If you're unable to mount your kite, they might let me fly it.'

The barkeep expertly poured their drinks and slid them across the counter. "Here you go, sirs," he said.

"I assure you I can match you drink for drink, sir," said Jones, smiling back and raising his glass. "To victory!"

John laughs and raises his glass.
'To victory!'

He downs the drink, savouring the burning liquor as it passes down his throat.

'Give us another round, Henry. The air is particularly dry today.'

He then turns back to Jones and asks
'Say Jonesy, you didn't sre anything weird while you were up there, did you?'
