The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

The Zero Room is a room in the TARDIS that is cut off from the rest of the universe, where you can come to relax and chat. All Out of Character discussion, whether game-related or not, can take place here.

I heartily recommend reading Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis, her two-part novel published in 2010 about time travelers in World War Two Britain. I read them earlier this year, and they are excellent and give a great feel for the setting.

Mr. Handy... I noticed Story's picture in the Character Sheet thread is deadlinked now (as the image was hosted on my former blog). Here's a new link for the image: https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/17/80/19/36/the_ar10.jpg

Oops sorry Mr Handy, I've only just found out about Horror in the Blackout! If I'm not ready in time can my character join in once the game has started? I'll read the background stuff now and have a ponder on someone suitable.

Sure, no problem! I don't think it will start before your character is ready, anyway. The Brotherhood of Death hasn't quite concluded yet, and I may start the TARDIS crew's thread here before I bring in everyone else. In the worst case, we can just assume your character was in the air raid shelter all along.

Our last player hasn't logged in for two weeks now, so I plan to go ahead and start the air raid shelter and the air raid warden's threads this weekend.

The Blitz has begun! Everyone please proceed to the shelter in an orderly fashion. There is no cause for panic. Our helpful air raid warden will assist anyone who needs help.

Eddie Lawlor, your thread is now up and running: The Eye of the Storm

All other 1940 characters are in the following thread: The Shelter

The game is officially underway! Have fun!

I have happy memories of reading Connie Willis' 'To Say Nothing of the Dog' some years ago. And I have just reserved 'Blackout' at my local library.

You're in for a treat! I've always liked Connie Willis's writing. Fire Watch was the first thing of hers I've read, and I've also read and own copies of To Say Nothing of the Dog and Passages (2002), which was the last book she wrote before Blackout and All Clear (both published in 2010). She spent the intervening eight years writing them. I hadn't even heard of those books until I saw them in a bookstore in London late last year.

One thing everyone should keep in mind is that you're only supposed to read In Character (IC) threads if your character is in them, with the singular exception of Introduction, which everyone may read. This will help keep player and character knowledge separate and increase suspense. After the adventure concludes, you may all go back and read everything.

Welcome back!

I've played Cthulhu Dark a few times before at conventions and enjoyed it. The rules can fit on a single sheet of paper (if it's double-sided), so it's very easy to learn. I'm guessing most of the book is taken up by setting and Mythos background information. I met Graham Walmsley at Metatopia a couple years ago, where I was one of the playtesters for a LARP he created where we all played servants at an English country house in the 1920s and 30s, along the lines of Downton Abbey or Upstairs Downstairs. That was a lot of fun and very moving.

They still contain spoilers. You may be able to learn of these things through normal play. If not, after the entire adventure concludes, you'll be allowed to go back and read all of the threads, including spoiler buttons not meant for your character.

Welcome aboard! Yes, the character is Lord Rufus Colville, a civil servant with the Foreign Office. His player never posted for him, so he hasn't done much so far. You can find his character sheet here. If you decide to play him, you'll need to read The Shelter and then Rain of Death, which is the current thread. Please refrain from reading the other In Character threads (except for Introduction, which everyone may read). After the adventure concludes, you'll be allowed to go back and read everything. Once you've caught up, you can begin posting any time you're ready.

If you prefer to create your own character, you should see the Character Creation/Rules thread.

Is it unusual for an Air raid warden to be in the shelter? I thought they had to go around checking for lights, reporting explosions, etc. I'm thinking about having my character start taking a bit of an accusatory tone in reaction to fear/disbelief at what he has just seen and heard and wanted to see if that would be a valid observation. Also are Story and his companions wearing normal period clothing? I know what Brook is wearing was noted as unusual by other characters. Or what of what I notice about the other PCs does my character pick up on?

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

Posted: Mon Jul 17, 2017 2:15 am
by Mr. Handy
He's only been here briefly. Earlier, he was out looking for lights, damage, and people who needed help. He arrived with Story, Elizabeth, and Brook, whom he escorted to the shelter, which was followed immediately by the arrival of Eugene and then the German. Now that the German has arrived, Eddie would probably be expected to keep him in custody until someone could come to take him away. Story and his companions are dressed oddly, but people have been forced to wear all sorts of unusual things due to wartime circumstances. It's not unusual for women to wear trousers these days, which both Elizabeth and Brook are.

Thanks! I don't have any of them, and I may pick up the complete set for $15. I don't know when I'd have the time to run anything in that system, but I may be able to at least mine it for material.

I haven't been doing so great this week, and I haven't had much sleep, so I don't think I can update until tomorrow night. At least at this point I know who's going in each thread. Anyone who hasn't posted if they're staying or going by the time I update will just stay in the shelter by default.

I'm back!

Seems I missed the split. Had I been present at the time, I would have preferred to go outside as well, since after a couple of months the shelter is getting a bit stale, although there could be IC reasons for staying put. Additionally, if I left that would leave Phyllis alone there.

What do you suggest?

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

Posted: Wed Jul 26, 2017 2:54 am
by Mr. Handy
Welcome back! You should do whatever you feel is best. If you want to go outside, I'll move you into that thread just like I did for Archie. Phyllis won't be completely alone, as there are three NPCs with her, but she would be the only PC in that thread. If you prefer to stay, that's fine too.

I had been hoping that only a small number of people would go up to the surface, and that the prisoner would remain in the shelter with the others. That would have kept both threads interesting, but things don't always go the way I expect.

Welcome back! Yes, there's room for you in this one. I don't think any of the PCs have been abandoned, but you can create your own character and I'll find a way to introduce you. The easiest way would be if your character had simply been in the air raid shelter the whole time, but there may be other ways, depending on who your new character is.

How about a dashing American air force captain, volunteering with the RAF, stranded in London? :)

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

Posted: Thu Aug 03, 2017 3:07 am
by Mr. Handy
That works perfectly! In 1940, it was known as the United States Army Air Corps. In 1942, it became the United States Army Air Forces, and it only became a separate military branch in 1947. There were more than a few American volunteers in the RAF. You should use the Pilot occupational skill list: Astronomy, Electrical Repair, Mechanical Repair, Navigate, Operate Heavy Machine, Physics, Pilot, and one other skill of your choice. Your Pilot skill should be Pilot Fighter, though you can also use it as Pilot Civil Prop with a slight penalty. You'd probably have some points in Machine Gun, as your fighter would be armed with at least one. In addition, you'd have a pistol and would probably be trained in its use.

I think the best way to introduce your character to the story would be to have your plane shot down and have you bail out so that you come down in just the right spot. I may be able to bring you in this weekend, when I plan to advance the surface thread.

I neglected to have everyone make a Sanity roll with a 0/1 Sanity loss for enduring the first night of the Blitz. You lose no Sanity if you succeed, but 1 Sanity if you fail. The good news is that if you fail the roll, you've gotten used to it and won't need to roll again on subsequent nights.

Everyone please make that Sanity roll now. You can roll in this thread rather than in the IC threads. If anyone hasn't rolled by next weekend, I'll roll for them.

Cubicle 7 are dropping their Call of Cthulhu license, with the aim of developing their own independent system. The license expires at the end of this month, so they're having a flash sale on their Cthulhu titles, that they have to sell or pulp if not sold by 31st December 2017. The discount isn't too much, 25% on most titles, but it includes the World War Cthulhu and Cthulhu Britannica Lines, as well as The Laundry. Full details here:

http://cubicle7.co.uk/cubicle-7-call-of-cthulhu-sale/

I've just picked up their World War Cthulhu London and Cold War books in the sale.

Also Cubicle 7 will be having a sale starting later this week on PDF versions of their Call of Cthulhu titles at DriveThruRPG/RPGNow. So for anyone just wanting PDFs, or perhaps wanting something that isn't in print any more, like the London boxset, that will be a reduced price option too.

Thanks! I have a physical copy of World War Cthulhu: The Darkest Hour that I got for half price in a sale some time ago (along with some Achtung! Cthulhu stuff), and more recently I purchased the Cthulhu Britannica and World War Cthulhu PDF bundles. World War Cthulhu: London has been a great resource for this game! I don't have The Laundry books, but that's something to consider when the PDFs go on sale. I'm not going to get hard copies, as shipping from the UK to the USA, just like the other way around, is insane,

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

They ship within the US directly MrHandy, so do bear that in mind. There is a flat rate for UK/US shipping, and it goes out from whichever warehouse as needed - UK for UK orders, US for US or Canada ones.

To give an idea of the shipping costs, the World War Cthulhu Cold War book is down from $44.99 to $33.74, and US shipping for that (sent from within the US) is just $3.37 on top. Which sounds quite reasonable to me ;)

The bigger issue at the moment, to be honest, is that the print stocks are dwindling, and some things are already out of print.

PDFs will be fine though, but of course will stop being sold after 31st December.

When the PDF sale goes live I'll try to post here again as a heads up.

Take care!

I was looking in my Wizard's Cabinet after buying the Dracula Dossier Bundle and noticed that I have a 30% discount for Cubicle 7's webstore for Cthulhu Britannica and World War Cthulhu books until the end of the year. If I want to get hard copies of any of my PDFs, I could get an even better bargain, and I could also preorder Our American Cousins for $17.50.

Cubicle 7 haven't announced it widely yet, but they have now reduced the prices on the PDFs of their Cthulhu items. Available to buy on RPGNow / DriveThruRPG.

Sales on The Laundry, Cthulhu Britannica and World War Cthulhu will continue until the 31st December 2017, but they will stop after then. So pick up anything you want before then.

Deals on print + PDF are still available direct from Cubicle 7, via their own webstore. Again until the end of this month on these ranges.

Mr H, sing out if Archie's plans conflict with your story telling. I guess my intention (as Archie stated) would be for him to try to arrange an expedited autopsy, wait the results, then find his way back to old Giles at the church.

All is flexible, however!

Don't worry, it doesn't interfere. Just do what your character would do. Players doing unexpected things makes the game more interesting. This adventure, like most of them in this campaign, is rather sandboxy, so it's hard to derail it.

I kind of realised that the campaign’s scope happens to be pretty big after realising an offhand reference about Anna’s job resulted in an entire plot point. Awesome dedication right there! Loving the game so far. :D

Thank you very much, though that was actually long-term planning rather than improvisation. If you ever read the first adventure in this campaign, The Terror Out of Time, you'll see just how long I've been planning it, as that's when I planted the seeds. Anna just happened to fit so perfectly into what I was already planning to do, and she isn't the only investigator in this game where things worked out like that. That also tended to happen a lot with Space Oddity, where I was able to get many disparate characters involved in the plot despite their differing backgrounds.

Yep. I've read a few of the past campaigns, it was pretty amazing how much thought and dedication was put into making them 'pop'. Personally, I'm loving every moment of this and it's amazing watching the plot unfold before my eyes.

Rather off topic but just wanted to mention that there's a batch of new Target novelisations out, inc Rose and Day of the Doctor. I'm currently reading the latter, by Steven Moffat. It's very good. I'm also very much looking forward to reading Russell T Davies having a go at expanding Rose. I'm reading them on my Kindle but have signed copies of all 5 (others Christmas Invasion, Twice Upon A Time and a reduced from existing length City of Death) on order from Forbidden Planet next week (the signed preorder copies have sold out). If they sell well it's possible we'll get more new novelisations in future. Brings back memories of me ogling Target books in the shops in the 1980s :)

I grew up on those too! :) I was actually just in Forbidden Planet last night (I'm in London now) and found out they're having a signing with Steven Moffat on Friday evening. While I was there I bought two new Fighting Fantasy books, Port of Peril and the last copy they had of Gates of Death, as well as three books for two quid: two collections of Mythos fiction (Madness of Cthulhu and Weirder Shadows Over Innsmouth) and an alternate history story called Clash of Eagkes, where the Western Roman Empire never fell and mounts a transatlantic expedition in the 13th century. I also bought a copy of Arkham Noir when I was at the Orc's Nest today, a solitaire game that isn't available in the States.

Excellent! Well hopefully I'll get my signed Targets next week. I actually read Port of Peril just the other day! It's very very linear, and a bonkers design, but there were a lot of things I liked about it, especially the characterisation and descriptions. And I have Gates of Death on order and due to be dispatched any day now. That is getting excellent reviews from readers.

I also got Chaosium's new version of Alone In The Dark just the other day. Just have to print out the character sheets and handouts and then I'm good to have a go at playing through it. I bought it in PDF in December but have been waiting for the print copy to play. I got a discount from the PDF purchase on the print order, which was good.

Have a good time in the UK!

Thanks, I'm having a great time! I don't know when I'll get a chance to play the new FF books, as I've got quite a backlog. I have plenty of FF books I bought on trips to London years ago that I haven't gotten to yet, and I'm currently in the middle of a marathon reading of the Outlander series. If you haven't read that yet, you should, as it would be right up your alley and is even connected to Doctor Who. The character of Jamie Fraser is inspired by Jamie MacCrimmon.

Haha! I've had people recommend Outlander to me before. And yes I think I would probably enjoy it. But given the amount of books, and how it would probably suck me in, I'm trying to resist for now :) Though I did pick up the first couple when they were on special offer for the Kindle, just in case, and for the inevitable time when I will read them! I did know they came out of Doctor Who fanfic.

It is a huge amount of reading, and it does pull you in. I actually started reading the first book in early 2003 and got about halfway through, but the sleep deprivation caused by my condition made it impossible to continue. Once I found out what I had and started to take medicine that made it possible for me to get a halfway decent amount of sleep in 2009, I was able to read for pleasure again, but I didn't get into Outlander again until recently. It was the TV series that reminded me of it and got me interested/obsessed again.

Oh, I've also been listening to the Scarifyers on BBC Radio 4 in my hotel. They've been airing The King of Winter, one episode per night, since last night, and I'll be here long enough to hear the whole thing.

Hello all, thanks for having me! Im excited to play, and look forward to any story woven by Mr. Handy, who ive had the privilege of playing with a few years back. Im not sure if im reading the character sheets page correctly, MIA could mean the player split or the character is simply missing in game, but i kind of like the sound of leppy, so unless I'm mistaken i think ill take his place! Mr. Handy, as soon as i hear from you as to what ill need to read to catch up, ill get in game asap.

Also, if you are interested, i have the pdf's of 7th ed core and players handbook

Welcome! Thanks, but it isn't legal to share PDFs. I'll buy the books (physical copies) one of these days, when they're discounted enough or a softcover edition is released.

MIA means that the player is missing, not the character, so all the characters with MIA are available for you to choose, as is Leppy. Withdrawn means the player actually told me he was leaving. The others just stopped posting. When you've chosen your character, please let me know by posting here.

Sure, and my apologies, Im used to sharing documents and such with my friends, didn't mean to imply anything or attempt to do anything that would make anyone uncomfortable.

I'll go ahead and stick with Leppy, since his player has been confirmed as gone, on the off chance one of the other players comes back. Unless of course it would be more convenient for you to have me pick up a different character who's player may have left at an inconvenient time of the game and would like that character back in game. I have no problem playing whatever is needed!

You should play whichever character you want. While Lord Rufus Colville could get into the action faster, seeing as he's in it already, any of the characters is fine, and it's going well even with Lord Rufus in NPC mode.

You'll need to catch up on what Leppy has done so far. To do that, you'll need to read the IC threads listed below in the order listed, and only those IC threads. You cannot read any of the IC threads that don't feature your character until the adventure is over, with the singular exception of Introduction in Episode 1, which everyone may read. After that, please read the following threads:

Episode 1: The Shelter->Rain of Death->Into the Storm
Episode 2: Prisoners of Time->The Long Night->Among the Ruins->Buried->The Dead Girl->The Plot Thickens->Staying Behind

Once you've caught up, let me know by posting here, and I'll get you started in a new thread.

Hopefully things will settle, but struggling a lot at mo. Including not very coherent for game posting! So until Thursday 10th May or so? Many thanks.
Spoiler,She'll still be angry about what happened to Nell, and still wanting to know why Nell had to die. Without directly accusing the Major of killing her, with a bit of luck!

Sure, no problem, and I hope you feel better. I'll generally have Elizabeth follow John's lead in your thread, as it wouldn't be fair for me to make decisions.

Hi all,
I'm Shelfunit, and will be taking over Charles Davis. I'm fairly new to playing CoC, but have been a fan of Lovecraft, and have owned the game for about 20 years now. As for Dr Who, I've been watching that since the days of Colin Baker. Just a word of warning for anyone relying on my character to do anything, how ever easy it may appear - my dice rolls tend to veer from bad, to inhumanly awful (although I seem to having trouble working the bb code for the forum roller, which I'm not sure is a good sign, or not).

Thank you. It turns out that it wasn't as bad as previously thought. Most of the doctors at the hospital last weekend had thought it was a gallstone, though one had said it was a kidney stone. I'd had those before last year, and it didn't feel quite the same, but it turned out that she was probably right. A few days ago I had an appointment with a surgeon to discuss the possibility of having my gallbladder removed, and the symptoms she described of gallstones was nothing like what I had, so I don't have to have it taken out after all. I had recovered from the actual kidney stone (if that's what it was) over a week ago, but the shot of toredol they gave me for the pain left me extremely drowsy for the next few days and then merely very drowsy for the rest of the week. I'm back now, and I'll update and merge the threads.

Just checking - as we’re gathered for tea, the talk of the asylum, and the escapee - does Charles know of any of this, maybe from reading about it in the papers (maybe a know roll, or something), or is it completely new info for him, and he hasn’t got the faintest idea what is being talked about?

It's rather off topic, but I recently read a book that I think others here may enjoy. It's called The Woven Path by Robin Jarvis. It's set in a London museum full of weird things, which would be relevant enough, but then it goes off in another direction entirely, and it's not unrelated to this game we're playing.

It's a young adult book, so a fairly easy read, aimed at teenagers or so. But I would recommend checking it out if you like weird things, strange fantasy, and a rather timey wimey plot that may resonate. Oh and it's the first in a trilogy, but I haven't read the others yet, and this one does tell its own story.

Hi, can I do a psychology roll on Elizabeth to see if I think she's a) talking rubbish, or b) believes what she is saying? I'm having trouble figuring out how Charles can believably believe her without making it seem like he'll accept anything told to him about anything, and feel like he's holding up the flow of the game because of this.

Ooops, sorry, that was too loud. ANyways, apologies to everyone here for dropping off the radar so abruptly. I didn't get any emails from the PLAY@YSDC system as I usually did and forgot all about htis for a while. Seriously, I really do feel sorry for ruining the fun for someone else and maintaining such poor RP etiquette; I should've noticed this sooner, again kow-tows in apology. People have been reporting that the notifications don't work for years. I haven't experienced it myself, as I've never used them. I just check the board for the most recent posts in each forum to see if there's anything new. It's a lot easier for me to check that frequently than to log in to my email.

Sorry I've been out of action for the last week or so. Just managed to post something. Glad others were roleplaying nicely while I was out of action!

Best wishes of the season to all. It feels rather strange not having Doctor Who on the telly. But I'm amusing myself with the latest Big Finish monthly release ("The Hunting Ground", with the 6th Doctor in Iceland, Nordic Noir style) and also a relisten of their classic Christmas 8th Doctor story "The Chimes of Midnight".

That's weird. I don't know what could be causing that. Nothing has changed about that thread, and others are able to post there. If you post what you want here (in a spoiler button, so players in the other thread don't see it), I can copy it to the IC thread and change the post's author to you. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new thread started within the next week where I join everyone together.

For any fellow players who're also customers of Doctor Who audio company Big Finish, heads up if you're outside the UK: your download prices are about to shoot up! More details at

https://www.bigfinish.com/pages/v/impor ... s-overseas

The change takes effect on 1st April. Download prices for US/Canada/Australia etc. will change to be the same as the UK, which have been hefty for years. So if you wanted to buy something soon, on download, maybe order it before 1st April?

The Big Finish website is also about to have a revamp. Hopefully it will all go well, but on previous occasions the customer downloads and order history haven't always transferred nicely. So if you really, really want something, maybe download it now, and optionally take a copy (even screenshots) of your order history? Again before 1st April when the new website is due to launch.

She isn't present. She didn't return to the church the second night. I've basically put her in the background until and unless she gets a player. She may still be around doing things, but you don't know what she's doing or where she is. She may also have left. I'm leaving the door open in case she does get a replacement player, or her original player returns.

But had a great time, and my husband was there much more. We also met an old uni friend from 25 years ago who had flown in from Japan. And I had a 3.5 hour family reunion on Sunday afternoon, with my long lost Irish family (Dublin). Magical! That last one fair took it out of me, but just about recovered now. So happy, happy trip. Now to see what's been going on in the game ...

Hi everyone! I've got a bit of catching up to do but I'll try and start posting this week.

I've played CoC on and off for literally decades but have never played on-line like this before so this is a first. Mistakes may be made.

The "OOC" button actually is a type of spoiler button. You can see how it works in this post.

Yes, it is a long read. This particular game has been going on for almost two and half years so far, and it has thousands of posts so far. Fortunately, you don't read the ones in the threads that don't include your character, but it's still a lot. After the adventure concludes, you may all go back and read everything. I estimate we're about two thirds of the way through.

Having read through I was a bit puzzled by my character's switch from scepticism to acceptance of flying monsters. I didn't think she'd seen (or heard) enough. Any objections to me bringing back some scepticism again? I don't want to piss people off.

No problem. She's your character now, so play her as you wish. You do gather that Eugene and others truly believe they've seen these monsters, but of course, they are crazy, so how can you believe them?

Mr Handy, I saw from your post in the 'player looking for a game' section that this adventure is Sylvester McCoy era inspired. I actually really like SM, have happy memories of watching him as the Seventh Doctor in my uni days. "Remembrance of the Daleks" was excellent. Feel the poor guy didn't really get a fair shake off the DW sauce bottle.

Although he probably could argue he's no worse off than Chris Eccleston or Peter Capaldi in the public's memory.

(And was pretty cool as Radagast.)

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

by Mr. Handy
Yes, he was quite good, and I'm glad Doctor Who continued in the classic era after the hiatus, or we wouldn't have had those stories. In some ways his Doctor was reminiscent of Hartnell's, who could also be manipulative, though McCoy's Doctor was moreso. Remembrance was a great one, as was The Curse of Fenric. I try to forget that Time and the Rani exists, but it seems I've just remembered it. Still, that one wasn't his fault. And it was a pleasant surprise to see him as Radagast in The Hobbit.

My least favorite Doctor is probably Colin Baker, but that isn't really his fault either. The writing got pretty bad for some of his stories, and I also didn't like the Sixth Doctor's abrasive personality. That, however, was a credit to Colin Baker's acting ability that he could portray the Doctor that way. Peri also made the Colin Baker era worth watching.

I agree completely. I stopped watching shortly after Colin Baker's appearance.

But Peri was definitely a good thing for DW!

Mr Handy and fellow cast members, for fans of this "Dad's Army" WWII at home setting - I've just watched episode one of the new mini-series "World on Fire". Really very good, beautiful settings and great cast.

And it has Sean Bean! Who would make a great Dr Who...

I hope this doesn't sound nit-picky - or maybe something already covered that I should have read - but is there a reason why Major Steadman has an Army rank and not an RAF rank? The equivalent rank in the RAF to Major is Squadron Leader.

If this is just "one of those things", possible reasons could include his being seconded from the army or a temporary transfer from the US Army Air Corps.

Addendum: I should add, my question is entirely because I'm not sure if this is relevant to the story. If it is relevant, matters of rank would be something Archie is aware of. If it's not relevant, disregard my pedantic ponderings.

The actual reason is that I was ignorant of exactly what the RAF ranks were all called. We'll just say that the in-game reason is that he was seconded from the Army.

Is he a pilot? If so maybe he's a Royal Artillery Air Observation Post pilot. I don't think the Army Air Corp existed in 1940.

He is a pilot, and he's British, not American. He could have been Royal Artillery Air Observation Post pilot before, but he's currently based at Biggin Hill and had been flying in the Battle of Britain until he was shot down in August and lost his leg.

The dice clearly hate us this week.

Traditionally, I like to train my dice by having them rest with the desired number facing "up", so the heavy molecules sink to the bottom of each die. An accepted scientific method. Bit hard to do with virtual dice though.

Tonight BBC America is airing the new animated version of The Macra Terror, which I'm really looking forward to seeing. It's been out for most of a year in Region 2, but it's not even available for preorder yet in Region 1. They were probably delaying that until after it aired, so hopefully it'll be out soon.

First two eps were great IMHO, especially ep 2, which was a quite sublimely crafted piece of theatre in a confined space with small cast.

Sadly episode 3 went downhill badly for me and many other viewers.

But I've got eps 1 and 2 to remember :P

Even after almost eighty years, they're still finding UXBs in London.

Remember, if you come across an unexploded bomb, don't touch, keep well away from it, and alert the nearest air raid warden!

I can remember a great tv series from my childhood set among bomb disposal soldiers in London during the blitz. Would have been an early '80s production or even late'70s, BBC. Fictional drama series. My recollection is the main cast had all been blown up by end of series.

We got a lot of BBC shows here on the Australian ABC back before web channels and streaming tv. Still do now, just differently delivered mostly.

I've heard of it, but I've never seen it. It's called Danger UXB. It aired on PBS here in America in 1981, but I was too little to know about it at the time. I was just discovering Doctor Who then (also on PBS).

Thanks! The wikipedia page didn't say anything about a DVD, but I'd have bought it if I'd seen one for sale anywhere, and I haven't. I'm not sure if there is one, or at least not outside of Region 2. I might be able to buy a digital copy from Comcast, my cable provider. I'll have to check.

Some of the surviving clips of missing episodes of Doctor Who came from episodes that the BBC sent to Australia. Ironically, those scenes alone were preserved precisely because the Australian censors deemed them too scary to air, and they were required to hold onto them.

That's one of those light side / dark side things isn't it? I hate the censoring, paternalistic mentality of that but I'm very glad the film got saved. Be grateful in the long run, I guess. :)

Thank you both. You may post for Eugene as soon as you've caught up on his story so far. His current thread is Commitment.

Hal, you can choose from other characters that are available. The simplest choice would be to play Charles Davis. You'd just have to read the threads that he was in that you haven't read already. You're actually not supposed to read threads that don't have your character until the adventure is over, which will speed things up for you. Alternatively, you could take over the character of Brook Davies, who is one of the Time Lord's companions. However, she has been in every adventure since the beginning. If she carries over into the next adventure, you'd continue playing her, though she could always be retired at the end of this adventure if she survives. If you do play her, you should probably read the first four adventures as well, especially the first one, as there are some callbacks to that adventure in this one. Just let me know which one you want by posting here, and I'll get you started.

Great, he's yours! You'll want to read the following IC threads to catch up, and only those threads (you can follow the hyperlinks at the end of each thread starting in Episode 2 to reach the next one):

Episode 1: Introduction
Episode 2: Bloody Sunday->The Plot Thickens->Staying Behind->Tea Time->The Gathering->House of Secrets->Breaking and Entering?
Episode 3: On the Third Day->Lord of the Manor->Convergence->Deeper Mysteries->Waiting->Madness at Night->Home Fires->Trail of Madness->The Prisoner->They're Coming to Take Her Away->Deja Vu->Commitment

The site was undergoing maintenance, but it took a lot longer than I thought it would. About a week and a half ago I was notified that it would happen starting on Friday the 26th at 10:00 PM Eastern time, and it should have come back up by Saturday at 8:00 AM, but I had then forgotten about it until Friday night, when the site went down while I was in the middle of posting shortly before 11:00 PM. It's been down until today, and I saw that all the posts I made Friday night were gone, as they must have backed the site up some time before they took it down. A spammer I had eliminated was also back, so I had to get rid of it again.

I should be able to update the game and get it moving again starting this weekend.

Anyone seen this?

https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/do ... asion-2047

Haven't listened to it yet but it seemed apposite:

The Doctor, Constance and Flip join forces with 51st-century bounty hunter, Calypso Jonze, to hunt down the Somnifax: a weaponised mind-parasite capable of turning its host's nightmares into physical reality. Chasing it through the time vortex to Providence, Rhode Island in 1937, they arrive too late to stop it from latching onto a local author of weird fiction... Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

With time running out before Lovecraft's monstrous pantheon breaks free and destroys the world, the Doctor must enter Lovecraft's mind to fight the psychic invader from within.

Can he and Flip overcome the eldritch horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos? And will Constance and Calypso survive babysitting the infamously xenophobic Old Gentleman of Providence himself?

I've heard of it, but I haven't listened to it either. It does sound interesting. There was a discussion of it on Yog-Sothoth.com

That's with the sixth doctor, isn't it? Just about the only doctor I don't want to listen to, even with a CoC connection.

Yes, it is. He's my least favorite Doctor too, but he's still watchable for me. I never liked the Sixth Doctor's personality, though it's a credit to Colin Baker's acting ability that he can make him so unlikable. Oddly, I'm getting ready to watch the Blu-ray version of Trial of a Time Lord as soon as I finish the bonus material from the Blu-ray of Peter Davison's first season, which should be later this week. It's not my favorite, but at least it's not the first story of the following season, Time and the Rani.

You know I have a soft spot for Colin Baker, perhaps because he was the doctor when I was young. I've quite enjoyed some of the radio productions with him in.

I'd like to imagine the shot was in fact a heart shot but went through Archie's RN issue bible, which is in his left jacket inner pocket over his heart. The force of the bullet was slowed just barely enough not to kill him. The Navy bible is now holed and drenched in blood...

Just checking in briefly to say sorry I’ve had to drop out of the game folks. I knew it was coming sometime. And blogged about the likelihood soon a year ago:

https://vivsacademicblog.wordpress.com/ ... l-disease/

But I had hoped to still be playing Elizabeth now, and through to the end of this scenario. I’ve played her since the very start of this TARDIS team. Sadly my neurological disease has been badly out of control over the last year. And also progressing generally behind the scenes. So I found I couldn’t keep up with the game.

So reluctantly I’m effectively out. But tonight I’ve just started reading the mass of posts in recent months. So much stuff! Thanks all for continuing the story folks. And best of luck for the coming bits, I’ve only read so far tonight, so still have some action to read!

Thanks for returning to check in! I'm sorry you can't play any more, but at least you'll be able to enjoy reading the adventures. Hopefully someone else will take over playing Elizabeth so that her adventures can continue.

Story's player has also had to drop out for different reasons, and Brook's player stopped posting even before that, so I'm trying to wrap this up playing the TARDIS crew as NPCs. Before the next adventure starts, I would like to find new players to take over the characters. I already have someone lined up to play Story, but I could use two players to play Elizabeth and Brook, provided they survive the rest of this adventure. Any of you can play them starting in the next adventure, though you may want to use the time between now and when it starts to catch up on their previous adventures. Some of you have already been part of this campaign during previous adventures, so you may already be familiar with them. If I can't find new players for either or both of them, I can write them out of the campaign (there are reasons they might want to stay in 1940). Survivors of this adventure may possibly become companions.

Congratulations everyone on finishing The Horror in the Blackout! I hope all of you enjoyed playing it as much as I enjoyed running it. Though this adventure is over, the campaign will continue. The sixth adventure, The Masque of Nyarlathotep, is set in southern France in the early 16th century. I'm aiming for an early July launch, as I'll have some time off then to get things started. I'll post a link to the new forum when I create it. All of you are welcome to join (some already have), though except for the TARDIS crew you'll need to make new characters. You're all now free to read all of the threads in this game. SunlessNick will be taking over the regenerated Story but has been having network trouble the last two weeks. SunlessNick should hopefully be returning soon (I saw a post yesterday on Yog-Sothoth.com). Aine will be playing Elizabeth, and jp1885 will be playing Brook.

First, I'll give out rewards. Everybody gains 1D6 Sanity for stopping the threat, 1D10 for defeating a "Jaegerschreck" (actually a Hunting Horror), and 1D20 for defeating the Father of All Bats (aka The Haunter in the Dark). This reward may take your Sanity above its starting level, but under no circumstances will it go above 99 - Cthulhu Mythos.

Also, for those of you proceeding to the next adventure, look at your character sheets. Wherever you see a * next to a skill, that means that you've successfully used it during the adventure and have a chance to improve it. Roll 1D100 for each of these skills and post your results here. If you get higher than your current level in the skill, then roll 1D10 to see how much it increases. If you raise one or more of your skills to 90% or higher this way, you gain an additional 2D6 Sanity for each such skill. Again, this may raise your Sanity above its starting level. If you roll less than or equal to your current level in the skill, it does not increase.

Characters remaining in 1940 could conceivably appear in a later adventure set after this one, but that won't be for a very long time. You are free to roll for Sanity and skill increases for those characters anyway. Those of you taking over new characters should roll for increases on those characters as well as your characters from this adventure. You can also use the time between adventures to read up on the previous ones.

There are special rules for Story's regeneration that I created for the first adventure, The Terror Out of Time. They can be found here.

Thank you, SunlessNick! I've edited Story's new picture into the final IC post of the game and updated the character sheet. There's no need for you to copy the bold/italics. Martial Arts was not successfully used, so that one shouldn't increase and remains at 44%. Also, don't forget your Sanity rewards. You gain 1D6+1D10+1D20 Sanity. Since you lost at least 5 Sanity from regeneration, you should roll Idea to see if you go temporarily insane. If you succeed at the Idea roll, you do, and it will apply at the beginning of the next adventure.

You're welcome, Yockenthwaite! I'm glad you liked it, and I hope you enjoy Elizabeth's further adventures. She's in good hands.

I got an award of 28 (I rolled really well on the D20). If that applied before I regenerated, technically I would have made the SAN roll, but I'd rather lose the 6 (regeneration's not the same without a crisis - speaking of which I made the idea roll).

Since the regeneration happened before the end of the adventure, the loss would have happened first. Story will be temporarily insane to start the next adventure, and it'll be a longer-term one that I'll choose randomly when it starts, which should be fun. ;) With 94 Sanity, insanity probably won't be a big problem after it wears off, although you never know. Had you gained Sanity first, you'd have maxed out at 99 before losing the 6, so this way at least you have more Sanity.

Nice rolls! I've updated the character sheets. Everybody gets the 1D20 Sanity for defeating the Father of All Bats, even those characters who didn't go to the warehouse. It was all a team effort, regardless of who scored the death blow.

Elizabeth actually started the campaign with no extra points in Listen or Spot Hidden, which start at 25. Now they're 50 and 55 respectively!
