Characters

Arkham, Massachusetts, 1928. The last dying plea of an old friend and mentor leads to an encounter with a horror beyond description. Unwittingly released into the world nearly fifty years before, it is now time to finally confront the mistakes of the past. But it will come at great cost...

Please post your characters here.

A note on character creation:

You will receive a deathbed request to do something very strange and dangerous by Professor Dennis Putnam, formerly of Harvard and Miskatonic Universities. Most people would reply "Yeah right, see you later", but you feel a great obligation to this man and want to fulfill this duty. Therefore, your character can be any occupation, but must have a prior history with the Professor, in which you feel indebted to him, and want to see the mystery through to the end.

I recommend then that you might want to be former students or colleagues, or possibly family members, although not as a result of marriage. You might have a particular interest in the occult. Isadora (evil_scientist) knows the Professor through their association with the Theosophical society, so that's one option. His field is Anthropology, so possibly you have been an informant or an associate from one of his fieldwork expeditions, particularly in the Canadian north.

Mr. Handy, can you set the dice roller for us?

Any questions, feel free to pm or put them in the OOC chat.

Have fun!

Sounds good!

I was thinking about one of Professor Putnam's expeditions delivering a letter from Isadora to Norman Owens up North? Obviously Isadora cannot contact Norman via the usual means, as she's afraid the detectives might be checking her mail. So now Isadora is doubly indebted to the Professor.

I don't know if Putnam would approve of arson, and as at the time he and Norman were working at Harvard, they probably wouldn't want to have their name associated with a crime. The Mounties were asked to look for Norman - I imagine he would have probably had to leave the expedition and find his own way had he chosen not to cooperate.

I think Putnam is aware of Isadora's sensitivities, and of course she has some experience in ghostbusting, so she might be a logical choice for him. And we can also say that they've become closer since the events of The Haunting.

Okay, then let's just say Isadora consulted Putnam about hauntings.

Well, they're both members of the Theosophic society. Putnam has had more time to get to know her and believes in Isadora's spiritual abilities. We could say that they share a similar outlook. So Putnam would see her as someone who will believe him when he relates to her the experiences he's had. We could call them good friends.

(Just a quick clarification for my fellow players:
for this game, I'm bringing back Isadora Carmichael, the character I played in HoneyDog's recent adventure The Haunting.)

The dice roller should already be enabled. I did it when I set up the board.

I would have brought in my character who completed The Haunting a decade ago, Juliet Allan, but she didn't go through it with Isadora and it had a very different outcome.

Are there any special rules for character creation? Are we free to swap rolls around between stats that are rolled on the same type of dice (3d6 or 2d6+6), or do we just assign them in the order we roll them?

No, no special rules. The most important thing is you feel satisfied with your character.

Henry Glynn is a handsome young author of ghost stories based in Arkhan, MA. His late father Henry Glynn Snr was a Professor at Harvard University and a close associate of Professor Putnam. Henry didn't follow his father's path into academia but instead spent some time in Iowa maintaining farm machinery before moving back east to pursue his ambition to become a writer. Henry's work is cliche ridden with little literary worth however a recent novella, The Ghastly Chamber, has achieved modest sales and kept Henry afloat just as his inheritance was about to run out. Henry is now struggling to find inspiration for his next work and the floor of the the study is littered with crumpled sheets of typing paper.

I'll be two or three days before I can create my character as well, and after that I'll be leaving for my convention and not returning until Sunday night.

Have been creating my fella this evening, I am creating a student from a wealthy family in England who has been in correspondence with the professor and has come to USA to meet him. I shall hopefully finish off him tomorrow evening and upload him. It if my first character in CoC so any feedback on what I make up will be most welcomed. Cheers :)

Why not have him as a student studying at Miskatonic? He could have been taking the professor's classes.

Rupert Marlow has just graduated Oxford University in England, during his study of history he was in contact via letter to the Professor about his studies as he is an excellent student praised by tutors. He comes from a wealthy family outside the City of Norwich and has grown up in the country being able to hunt from a young age. Upon his graduation he has sailed to America to meet with the professor, he has brought enough money with him, but should he need more from his family it would take some time to arrive. He is unsure of his career path currently, but has had many job offers since graduating however he wanted to wait on these until after his visit. Although from a wealthy family, he doesn’t act aloof around people of a lower class instead is always interested to learn something from everyone, as he believes everyone is wise in their own way. He also has studied Welsh in his spare time as he finds it fascinating.

Above you can see Rupert, any feedback on him would be great, (I did feel like I had lots of points to spend?) But hopefully the description helps explain why I thought it would be fun for him to be English. A whole new world for him in America.

Thanks Guys

Appearance & Personality: Work in progress...

Background:
Isadora was born in India, in the family of an influential and wealthy Colonial Service officer. She had a sheltered childhood, with nannies and tutors watching her every step. She was a quiet, introverted daydreamer, deeply immersed in her own fantasies. The family decided to send her off to a private school in Switzerland, hoping that the company of peers would help her open up a little. Isadora did become a bit more sociable, although mostly by dragging her schoolmates into her elaborate fantasies. Her vivid descriptions of other worlds and weird proved to be infectious, especially in the environment of an all-girl establishment. Isadora and her friends also dabbled in the occult, in their naïve way, held small séances… They didn’t have much success (which is probably for the best!!), but from that time Isadora became interested in the occult, seeing it as a possible bridge between her fantasies and the "real" world.

It also became evident, that Isadora was a talented artist; although she was, once again, more interested in depicting the weird shapes from inside her mind, her dream-like visions, than painting still lives with flowers and realistic landscapes.

Upon finishing school, Isadora decided to pursue art and her father was ready to finance her career. She moved to Paris and began to study painting. But the bohemian social circle, the constant drama and anxiety, and also her forays into the occult turned out to be very bad for her health. Before this her inner dream world was a place full of light and hopes. But now strange, terrifying creatures began appearing in them… She had a serious nervous breakdown, disappeared, and was found three days later in a small village 50 miles from Paris, in a near catatonic state.

This forced her to interrupt her studies and go back to Switzerland – this time to a psychiatric clinic deep in the mountains, led by Dr. Jakob Klaesi. Here Isadora underwent many different experimental treatments, including deep sleep therapy. But not even hypnosis could recover any memories about her three day black-out and disappearance. After months of therapy, her superficial neurotic problems were "cured", but she was plunged back into her dream worlds, deeper than ever before.

After a short break, she returned to her art, now drawing and painting more than ever.

At the same time, a certain George Auden from Boston was staying at Dr. Klaesi's clinic as well. Auden, heir to a major American industrialist, was recovering after the trauma he received when the ship he was travelling on was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. He was a connoisseur of arts and member of a Theosophical Society, so no wonder he became infatuated at first with Isadora's paintings and then with her as well. Isadora didn't fall in love with George (she could never establish deep connections with other people), but enjoyed his profound fascination, and they also shared many interests, supernatural experimentation included. After the end of the war, they got married and moved to the States, to Boston.

Now she resides in Boston, attending the meetings of Auden's Theosophical Society, working on her paintings (sometimes she has small exhibitions), pursuing her interest in the supernatural. Her first encounter was The Haunting of Corbitt House.

Short version/timeline:
Secluded childhood -> Private school in Switzerland -> Studies in Paris -> Disappearance -> Psychiatric clinic in Switzerland -> Meeting with George Auden -> Move to Boston
