Turn 1 Upkeep, Library

Mandy Thompson sits at the table in the Miskatonic University's library, several books open in front of her. She cross-references between them and furiously scribbles down notes. While she spends much of her time here and the place is very familiar to her, the line of research upon which she has embarked is extremely unusual. A series of thumping sounds against the window makes her look up, and she can see large hailstones bouncing off of it. The moon is also visible through the grimy glass, and it is a bright blood red. Her face goes pale with fear. "Oh my God," she whispers to herself. "It's starting already! That's the last sign of the coming of Yibb-Tstll! But...but I'm not ready..." Shoring up her courage, she rises to her feet. "Ready or not, I have to go now and move quickly. Nobody else can do this. Nobody else knows what I know. If I tell anyone about this, they'll think I'm crazy. It's up to me to save the world." She giggles nervously. "Maybe I am crazy. Oh, I dearly hope so!" She wraps her dark cloak tight about herself and prepares to venture forth.

Turn 1 upkeep: Asylum.
Switching FIGHT/WILL 2/3 to FIGHT/WILL 1/4

Carolyn Fern went over the notes one last time, hoping against hope that they would reveal their secrets by looking at them one more time. There seemed to be something more to this case, the visions and dreams that she had read about seemed a little too vivid and real to be just ravings.

Trying to get the information she required was much more difficult. Obtuse paperwork she could deal with, it was just a matter of patience. Even bureacracy was possible to deal with with a little persuasion, but there seemed to be someone in her way on this one, stopping her from getting to the information she needed.

She would have to try another way. While bribery wasn't her normal modus operandi, it would have to be her method of operating for this case.

Smoking her last cigarette, Carolyn steeled herself before stepping out into the hail.

Turn 1, Arkham Movement
Ma's Boarding House -> Southside -> Uptown -> Woods (collect 1 clue)

Michael McGlen groaned and stretched as he awoke. His mouth was dry and his head throbbed from last night's excesses. He turned his head to see that the whore had already gone. Slowly he propped himself up on one elbow and squinted at the bedside table. His billfold was still there and still bulging with notes. Yes, she had known better than to steal from him. She had heard Delaney's screams as McGlen had clipped the fingers from his hand with a pair of heavy wire cutters. He slumped back onto his pillow and his brow furrowed at the memory. He had reached the index finger of the second hand before Delaney had cracked! Hell, he'd never got past two before! He would never have thought Delaney had it in him, but he was crazed; out of his mind. All he had got out of him was that the money had gone to some guy with a foreign sounding name. Yib Thistle or something. His brow unfurrowed and a slight smile crossed Michael's face.

"Well, Mr, Thistle," he thought. "Let's see how many fingers it will take before you give me my money back!" He forced himself upright and reached for the glass of water on the table. At least he knew where Delaney had last been seen. He would go straight to Arkham Woods and check it out. He decided he wouldn't call on Charlie; he would have had a late night escorting Delaney to the docks...

Use flute of the outer gods

http://www.arkhamhorrorwiki.com/Flute_of_the_Outer_Gods

SANITY 3/6
STAMINA 1/4

It's super effective: Killed cultist and vampire.

Gathering together her case notes, and various esoteric items that Carolyn accumulated in the course of the investigation, she stepped out in the street. The hailstorm put her on edge, but there was something more. There was a tremendous feeling of being watched, of being hunted.

One of the items was a flute, while no virtuoso performer, she could carry a tune, and felt that this would help calm her down.

Stepping into a shop doorway to get out of the hail, she pulled out the flute and began to play. Rather than the joyful tune that Carolyn intended, her fingers began to move of their own accord as the flute played dark notes which didn't appear on any musical scale.

Faster and faster the notes came out, she could feel energy coming out of the flute, mixing with the energy which was following her, fighting it.

Losing track of time in a world composed entirely of incomprehensible music, suddenly she came to her senses, mentally and physically exhausted.

Around her lay dark shapes of things which existed only in nightmares, the hail making curious shapes, and the presence was gone.

It was rare that Rex was the first to make it to the office but maybe the freaky hailstorm was making the other newspaper staff late. On his desk was a note, presumably left by the night watch. It simply said Independence Square. Rex grabbed his hat and moved out back into town, mayebe the storm would keep away any other reporters and it would be real scoop. Along the way Rex was attrated to soeme strange musical notes floating through the air. He spotted lady in a doorway playing the strangest pipe he had ever seen and hen he ducked into the doorway to listen awhile she smiled sweetly and handed over a talisman of some kind. Not knowing how to show his appreciation Rex rifled though his pocket and handed over one of the sheets of sigils that he had brought back fom his travels.

Moving on Rex at last reached the Square. It seemed deserted but just on the periphery of his vision Rex spotted movement. Something was hovering above the courthouse, its shape blurred by the torrent of hail falling from the sky. Pulling out the brazier a Witch Doctor in Haiti had promised would protect him from harm Rex prayed that he would be able to light it in the deluge. So it was with a great relief that it ignited and sparks flew into the air, surrounding the monstrosity that was descending towards him. Soon the figure appeared coated in sparks and writhed as if in great discomfort. With a flash it vanished and something dropped from the air where it had been hovering. Grabbing it and his brazier Rex headed for an alleyway where he could better examine his finding.

That was when things got strange.

OOC,Mandy picks up the Clue at the Black Cave, giving her a total of five. Using that roll shouldn't be a problem. You used the correct dice. Encountering the Mi-Go is part of the Movement phase, so you should do that now.

Turn 1 Movement, Library->Miskatonic U.->French Hill->Rivertown->Black Cave

Mandy races through the streets of Arkham, knowing she doesn't have a moment to lose and not wanting to be out in the hail any longer than she needs to be. Her only protection, other than her cloak, consists of the knife and bullwhip hanging from her belt. The knife, according to her research, is supposed to have special powers that will be useful against the various creatures that will be loosed upon the world in advance of Yibb-Tstll's arrival. Before long, she reaches her destination, the Black Cave on the east side of town. Gratefully, she dashes inside and out of the hail. This location is reputed to be one of several in the area where the barriers between dimensions are weak. If something is going to happen, it is likely to happen here first.

Turn 1, Arkham Encounter
Do not open box.

Despite the protection of his trench coat and hat, Michael McGlen was glad of the shelter afforded by the tree canopy. The hail storm seemed like it would never end and it was unseasonably cold. He leaned against the tree trunk and examined the blood soaked bank note again. He had found it wrapped around a strange looking figurine of a lumpish looking beast. He'd never seen anything like it, but for some reason, Michael didn't like to look at it. The hairs on the back of his neck prickled and he decided he needed to find out where it had come from. He stuffed the note in his pocket with the idol and strode away. As he neared the path his foot struck something and an old rusty box tumbled out of the long grass. He swore briefly as he saw the deep scuff on his new Oxford and gave the box an almighty kick. It tumbled through the air and clattered against a tree. Had Michael not been stalking towards the gate already he might have noticed the decayed human foot, missing all its toes, that spilled onto the grass as the box broke open...

Rex was suddenly out of the deluge. Not only that but he appeared to be out of Arkham completly. The hall he was in was incredibly large and in the gloom he couldn't make out any of the walls or the ceiling. Monstrous pillars stretched up into the gloom and rows of them disappeared into the distance on all sides. His nose wrinkled up at the smell and he reeled back in terror when the source of the stink reeled around a pillar and stretched its dessicated, clawlike hands towards his face. Reacting instinctively Rex pulled the church water from his jacket and using both hands splashed the creature with its contents. Smoke billowed from the creatre where the water hit and its unearthly screech echoed around the deserted hall long after it had been reduced to a pile of putrid flesh and bones.

Turn 1 Arkham Encounter, Black Cave

Mandy starts exploring the cave, and it quickly gets very dark. "I wish I had a lantern," she says to herself. As she makes her way down a tunnel, she thinks she sees one of the shadows move. She shakes her head. "You're imagining things. There's nothing there." She keeps going, but something leaps out of the shadows where she had seen movement and tackles her to the cavern floor from behind!

Mandy tries to reach for her weapons, but something cold and slimy wraps itself around both of her wrists, pinning them. "Help!" she screams, struggling uselessly against something much stronger than her. "GetitoffgetitoffHELP!" She can hear labored breathing very close by and on top of her, and she smells a disgusting odor. Something wet slithers across her neck. She lets out one final, desperate shriek, but she realizes that nothing can save her now and that she is utterly doomed...

Then, to her astonishment, a huge bear of a man emerges from the darkness and tackles the shadowy form, knocking it off of Mandy's back. She recovers her senses as the two of them wrestle. After a brief struggle, her assailant breaks free and races away into the darkness. The man comes over and offers her a hand, helping her back to her feet. "Are you all right, little lady?" he asks.

"I am now, thanks to you," she says, nearly swooning.

The man catches her. "The name's Tom Murphy, but most folks call me 'Mountain.'"

"I can see why. I'm Mandy Thompson."

"Come on, this place isn't safe." He guides Mandy back to the cave entrance. "You take care of yourself, okay?"

"Maybe I'll see you again sometime?"

"You never know." Tom walks away.

When she had first taken this case, Carolyn had had nightmares about the things written in the notes. In some curious fashion, seeing that elements of these ramblings are real, rather than fantasy gave her a curious feeling of comfort.

Turn 2 movement => Go to Administration building.

Mentally and physically exhausted, Carolyn stumbled around the streets until she came accross the welcoming view of the Miskatonic University Administration building. She had always had close ties to the university, so seeking comfort and companionship she entered the building.

Michael shoved the door and it swung inwards and banged off a doorstop. The receptionist looked up from her typewriter, startled. He stalked over, brushing the hail stones off his coat as he went. The broad was cute, but Michael wasn't in the mood to chase skirt. He reached into his pocket and thumped the idol down in front of her.
"Anyone here might know what this is?" he grunted at her. She stammered briefly before collecting herself.
"Professor Armitage is our expert on such effigies. Who may I say is here to see him?" Michael produced his billfold and slid a five dollar note out and laid it on the desk.
"You point the way and I'll announce myself"! As he leaned over his eyes receded into the shadows under the brim of his hat. The young woman looked up into void and she simply lifted her hand and pointed down the corridor to the left. Tears welled in her eyes as McGlen turned and strode away. Minutes passed before she gingerly lifted the bank note...

Suddenly, a gust of wind strikes Mandy and starts drawing her back into the cave. Glancing over her shoulder, she sees a shimmering, swirling vortex behind her. The wind is actually air being sucked into that vortex - and she is being pulled with it! She grabs hold of a stalagmite and tries to stop from being drawn in, but the pull is fierce. Her legs lose their purchase and fly up into the air, so that she is lying horizontal in midair with her feet pointed right at the bizarre anomaly. "Tom!" she cries. "Come back! Help!" But the rush of air is so loud that she cannot hear her own voice, so there's no chance that he can hear it either. Her fingers begin to slip, and while she clutches at the rock jutting from the cave floor with all her strength, it is not enough. She loses her grip and flies screaming into the impossible portal.

Turn 2 Movement, Great Hall of Celeano (1st area)

When Mandy comes to her senses, she is lying in an enormous hall with a high-vaulted ceiling. Endless rows of shelves stacked with books and scrolls stretch in all directions. She groans and drags herself to her feet, looking around. "It's a library!" she exclaims. "I'd recognize one anywhere. But what a library!" It is then that she notices the man walking amongst the stacks. "Hello! I'm Mandy Thompson. Who are you?"

Turn 2 encounter => Administration building

Entering the administration building Carolyn couldn't see anyone who she recognised, so decided to strike up a conversation with a bored looking receptionist. She tried to keep the conversation light, but talk of cabals of cultists and vampires slipped out because that was on the top of her mind.

The fixed smile of the receptionist slipped when she saw a porter.
"Jeff, I think this lady has come from the asylum"
Drawing up to her full height, Carolyn said "Of course I have, I am one of the therapists there"
Taking in the messy, damp, ragged and tired view of Carolyn, the porter evidently thought otherwise. "Of course you are, now let's get you back there safely". Grabbing her by a protesting arm, the porter firmly brought her into his van and drove to the Asylum. On the journey he said comforting things while Carolyn silently fumed.

In the Asylum, she was immediately recognised by the staff, and sent the porter away with a glare. She was about to turn away to leave again when one of the orderlies asked for her signature.

"What is this for?"
"One of the patients has died, left their belongings and we don't know what to do with them."
"I will take them"

Signing the form, the orderly hands over a bag. Rooting through the bag, a lot of it went to be incinerated, but there was some cash and knick-knacks. Feeling guilty, she pocketed the cash to put towards finding the truth of her patient and made a note to give the knick-knacks to a charity shop.

Do not move to Independence Square.

He rapped on the door impatiently for a third time. Still there was no answer. He looked to his left to find an old man in a janitors overalls, leaning on his mop handle, examining him. Michael stared back coldly, taking in the deeply wrinkled forehead and wild array of white whiskers that sprouted from his chin. The pale blue eyes twinkled from under bushy, white eyebrows.
"The professor ain't here", the old man offered. "Ain't none of 'em here. They all gone to Independence Square. I can take you there, you want?"
Michael slowly turned and headed back down the corridor without replying. He glided into the reception but the young woman and the money were gone. The bitch had taken the dough knowing the man wasn't here. He snarled and stormed towards the door. He would be back when he had more time. Even though Rex knew he should carry on searching for an exit to the real world his reporter's curiosity was piqued and he couldn't resist a look. As he scanned the pages whispering noises seemed to emerge from the shadows around the ancient columns and he felt a sense of impending doom creeping over him. It ws only then that he remembered the words of hot but far to prim's shrink he had once had a session with, "there is no harm in skipping to the end."

The turquoise hills are spotted with burrows. Luke walks past a lilac mulberry bush, infested by caterpillars, and halts just beyond it, he has seen that bush before: he is thoroughly lost. The ground trembles, Luke imagines a locomotive is approaching him, only it is still miles away. Out from the burrows gallop a host of quadrupeds, like tattered naked apes; the creatures form a circle round Luke. A giant among the ghouls steps towards him.

"We claim this as our own, or we shall pain you greatly."

Luke does not have anything to offer. The ghoul slices at Luke's side with dirty horn-like fingernails; the host titter and retreat; the injured "Dreamer" slumps to the earth, utterly dismayed.

Luke remembers a "healing" parchment, long forgotten, tucked away in the folds of his gown. With unexpected hope he reads the words aloud . . . and nothing happens, nothing at all.

"Oh, Jesus, f---, . . ."

And the magic works.

OOC,Rex needs to say which Gate in Arkham he's using to return. With his Curse gone, he may be able to handle the monsters around the Black Cave, though his Sanity is dangerously low (and will drop to 1 after he uses the Elder Sign). Independence Square is closer to the Asylum, though. I can probably beat the Star Spawn if I have to, but I'll probably need someone else to take care of the monster in the street. Rex does not need to encounter any monsters on the turn he returns, and he can use the Elder Sign in the Arkham Encounters phase. However, any monsters would still need to be dealt with next turn.

As Mandy makes her way through the alien library, she realizes how thirsty she is getting. Spotting a fountain in the distance, she disregards caution and rushes over to it, drinking her fill. Fortunately, it does not harm her.

Turn 3 encounter -

Carolyn rushed up to the train station just in time to see the next train to Kingsport leave. There were odd things happening out there, and she needed to be a part of it, and now was going to have to wait. Annoyed with herself, she paced around the station.

After a while a shifty looking man approached her.

"All right darling" he said.
Peering over her spectacles, Carolyn said "I don't think that is an appropriate manner of address. If you dont leave now, I shall call the porter"
"No need to do that. My name is Joey, I just thought that you might like some help"
"I am a fully qualified psychologist, working on special psychiatric cases using the latest techniques, I can't see what kind of help you can give me."
"Oh, I don't know. I heard that you were interested in the odd things happening recently. I have something which might interest you." Saying that, he pulled a sheaf of papers out of his coat, and handed just the top sheet over to Carolyn. She took it reluctantly, and started scanning it. Her eyes widened as she read the document.
"Where did you get this?"
"Don't ask, don't tell, that is my motto." he said with a crooked smile. "These interesting docs are yours for the sum of $2."
"$2 for some papers you 'found'?" she asked with scorn.
Drawing closer he said "Well you can have them for less if you give me a kiss" and he puckered up.
Taking out $2 from her purse, she poked the money into his open mouth, snatched the other papers, and said "$2 it is then". She walked off and found a quiet place to read.

Bought research materials for $2.

Moving on through the gloomy hall Rex comes around a pillar and is temporarily blinded by a sudden light. When his eyes become accustomed to it he finds that he is stood under one of the gas lamps lighting the doorway of the Town Hall, which has a swirling mass of vapours obscuring it. Rex feels a unearthly pull bck towards the miasma , and strange shapes appear and dissolve in its morass. Pulled by both the madness that the scene threatens and the physical urge to leap into it Rex feels an object in his pocket and pulls out the strange amulet he was passed by the flute playing lady. He hurls it into the mists and with sudden burst of howliing wind the mists evaporate. Left mentally drained by the recent events Rex determines that it may just be time to find some repose somewhere.

During the course of her treatment for the wounds suffered, the doctor in charge left a door to the medicine cabinet open. While only a small thing, the open cupboard seemed to be open to so much more, like a portal to another world, rather than a selection of drugs and band-aids.

Carolyn drew her nerves together and made a decision, fighting the malign influence of the sterile cupboard, she got up and shut the cabinet door.

There was a disturbance in the floors, for a moment it sounded like a million bandages in the cupboard cried out and were silenced, and then a pressure which had been building slowly released.

Luke Robinson feels giddy and confused; he stumbles over a tree root and then collapses, his back to a rotten oak.

Someone approaches him; it is Miss Annabeth from the day nursery at Woolcott Grange--his family home, her mother was Luke's wet nurse. Miss Annabeth--still seventeen years old after thirty years--is wearing a pinafore and lace cap.

"Lukey, you are tired--yet again! And look at the time"--she produces a watch from the fob pocket at the top of her uniform--"it is only six o'clock."

Maybe the associations, maybe his state of mind, maybe . . . whatever, Luke stares at Miss Annabeth's chest for an inordinately, an embarrassingly long time--he can almost detect the curve of her breasts beneath the thin stuff of her uniform. He snaps his betraying eyes away, and looks up into Miss Annabeth's eyes: Luke is shocked by his own reckless vulgarity.

"I-I'm sorry, Miss Annabeth, I'm not myself today."

She returns Luke's gaze, aloof, almost with pity.

"Lukey, you don't need to apologise; I know what men are like, at least, I will find out. . . ."

"I always thought I could control-- thought I understood-- empathy--"

"Empathy? What, with women? but you're a man!"

Luke Robinson crumples, a bit more, against the tree, and whispers:

"Shit."

He remembers the bag of lozenges. Childlike, he pulls a sweet out of the paper bag, and pops it into Miss Annabeth's mouth, as if it can make everything all right. Luke hears the lozenge drop to the forest floor and roll away amongst the dead leaves. . . .

Turn 4 Movement, Great Hall of Celeano (2nd area)->Black Cave

Mandy finally finds another swirling vortex in a hidden corner of the great library. Without a second thought, she leaps into it.

Turn 4 Arkham Encounter, Black Cave
Mandy stumbles through the portal and lands on her hands and knees on the floor of the cave in front of it, right where she had left. The winds have calmed down now, and the air is no longer trying to suck her back through. She stands and faces the gateway to the strange world that she has just left. "Let's see if I know enough to shut this thing for good," she says to herself. She begins to chant in a low voice, in a long-forgotten tongue. The knowledge she had gained from her research at Miskatonic University, the things she had seen on the other side of the gate, and her study of the cave itself enable her to channel the mysterious energies that allow it to bridge the gap between worlds - and to destroy that bridge. When she completes the ritual, the vortex shrinks down until it is a mere point, and then it vanishes as if it had never been there! "Yes!" she exults, thrusting her fist into the air. She is so overjoyed at her success that she fails to notice the trail of viscous slime leading away from where the gate had once been and out of the cave mouth...

Turn 5 upkeep - switch to SPEED/SNEAK 2 /1

Turn 5 movement, move to 7th House on the left.

Turn 5 encounter

The more that Carolyn faced these odd things, she seemed to be getting a feel for it. This thought both made her feel more secure in her ability to take on these creatures, and more afraid that she was getting inured to them.

Drawn to a certain street, outside the 7th house on the left was a pleasant looking old lady out watering her roses in an unhurried manner. Walking past the house the lady spoke to Carolyn "These roses won't last long if this blight keeps up", surprised at being spoken to without introduction, Carolyn mumbled something about dead-heading the bad ones allowing the others to grow.

The old lady introduces herself as Gladys Pickman, and lacking any other pressing matter, Carolyn started helping out with the garden. In some indefinable way, creating order from the garden seemed to reduce the pressure that she had been feeling.

While working, Gladys chatted about the different goings-on in the area like a professional gossip dropping hints about the problems and odd happenings.

Having sorted out the roses, and helped move the trimmings away to the compost, Carolyn was about to make her excuses and leave when Gladys said "I can't thank you enough for helping me with the garden, now I can't let you go without taking tea. I have home-made biscuits..."

Turn 5 Upkeep, Black Cave

Mandy heads for the cave mouth, a joyful skip in her step. She stops instantly when an ominous shadow outside falls across the entrance, causing her blood to run cold. She flattens herself against the cave wall and starts to hyperventilate, trying not to make any noise. Oh, God, don't let it find me... she thinks, clenching her eyes shut. Something cold and slimy slithers across the wall and brushes her shoulder. It is all she can do not to scream.

The dame appears at the entrance to the Black Cave, and Michael is about to flash a winning smile to her, when a winged horror flops between them. Michael's sideburns turn white, but he shakes his head violently, and spits out a greeting to the thing.

"Oi! maggot face, chew on this."

He touches his cigar tip to the fuse of dynamite--and waits as the fuse sparkles and burns down; the Star Spawn lumbers towards the gangster, who lobs the dynamite at it, and the dynamite explodes like a New Year Eve rocket. Michael congratulates himself on a job well done when a tentacle lashes his mug, forcing him to stagger: maggot face leers exultantly at him. He grabs his trusty tommy gun, and in pain, and panic, and anger he squeezes the trigger--just like Louis taught him to do. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat . . .

Turn 5 Movement, Black Cave->Rivertown->Merchant District->Northside->Curiositie Shoppe

Mandy emerges from the cave after the dust settles, her ears still ringing from the gunfire. She tries not to look at the huge mass of gore that had come so close to devouring her before the stranger had arrived and rescued her. "Thank you so much!" she says. "My name is Mandy Thompson. That...creature you killed, it is not of this world. This may sound hard to believe, but it comes from another world. These portals to other dimensions are opening up all over Arkham, and we have to seal them before something far worse comes through. I sealed the one in the cave, but not before that thing got here from the other side. I have to go now to find and shut the other gates, but first let me give you something to help." The tough man clearly has no need of weapons, as the submachine gun which is her namesake that he wields is more than sufficient. Instead, she takes off her dark cloak and hands it to him. "I don't have much, but you're welcome to it." She is surprised when the man pays her for the cloak, and far more than it is worth.

Now that she has more money, she heads across town to the Curiositie Shoppe to see what they're selling. She had bought her knife there some time ago, and they were bound to have other unusual artifacts that could help in her quest.

Luke walks up to the books in/out desk.

"Excuse me, madam, but does the library have a section on astral travel, alternate dimensions . . . that sort of thing?"

"You look a bit old for fantasy books. What you want is over there, next to the 'Children's Library.'"

"Er, thank you."

The receptionist leans forward off of her chair, peers left, then right, and whispers:

"It's very quiet in here today, tell you what, I'll show you, Mr.? . . ."

"Robinson, Mr. Luke Robinson; Luke, please."

"Abigail."

She heads for a dark corner of the library, dutifully followed by Luke.

"Well, Luke, here we are, a sorry collection, I'm afraid--the quantity, not the quality; Blackwood, Machen, and a self-published pamphlet from Lovecraft."

Luke only has eyes for a sword in a display case atop the bookcase.

"Now that is impressive."

"Take it, as a loan, this is a lending library."

phew, thought that was going to call for some clue tokens then but easy eh.

Hibbs sure made one fine treble quarterpounder and with a distinctly full gut Rex decided a call to the head round the back might be prudent before setting off on his way. Feeling both physically and mentally content he pulled his trousers down and sat on the wood over the hole.

Suddenly he felt something brush against his bare arse and he jumped up in shock. Looking down into the cess pool he could discern shapes that he may have assumed were feaces if not for the malevolant glint to the them suddenly the whole surface pushed upwards towards him and 2 tendrils shot out of the hole.

Rex gave out a shriek and staggered back, knocking into the sink and aprawling to the floor. The contents of his bag scattered across the floor and the brazier was within arms reach. Quivering with terror he set to striking matches to light it as a tendril wrapped around his leg and something beagan to push through the hole.

The brazier caught light quicky and as with the zombie the smoke seemed to coalesce around the awful tendrils and stream towards the hole. In total silence this time where the smoke wrapped itself turned insubstantial and eventually dissappeared leaving a deathly silence in its wake, broken only by Rex's stuttering breaths.

It took some time whilst lay there to realise that the awful stench was now coming from himself and his soiled pants. After cleaning himself up he vowed to ho tell his shrink about his latest encounter, hell what was it with this town!

Turn 5, Arkham Encounter, Library

Luke strolls towards the Library exit clutching the sword. An ancient man, five foot nothing, and wearing a moth-eaten bell hop suit, stands in Luke's path.

"Stop right there, young man. That"--pointing at Gladius of Carcosa--"is property of Arkham Library. Kindly, sir, hand it over to me."

"And who the hell are you?"

"Library Security."

"Security?--pathetic!"

The security guard flushes crimson with rage.

"No one speaks to me like that! no one. Not even Jeb Stuart at Gettysburg."

"'Gettysburg'? Just how old are you?"

"Ninety three, and not too old to cuff an ornery whipper-snapper, like you."

Luke has had enough of the conversation, and cannot bear to hurt the old duffer's feelings any longer; he hands over the sword. The security guard marches triumphantly away; Luke snaffles a paper weight.

Turn 5 Arkham Encounter, Curiosite Shoppe

Mandy strolls through the shelves of the store, looking at the bizarre and sometimes horrible objects on display. A yellowed manuscript draws her attention, but she recoils in terror when she realizes that it possesses the power to awaken Yibb-Tstll! That book should be destroyed! she thinks. However, she doesn't have enough money to buy the book just to destroy it and also purchase what she wants, so she leaves it, hoping that nobody will find it. She does, however, place it behind a row of books so that nobody is likely to even see it. There is also an odd blue pyramid made out of an unidentifiable substance. But it's an ancient stone tablet made of obsidian, carved with writing from a long-forgotten language, that captures her imagination. It's the most expensive thing in the shop, but also the most potentially useful. "I've seen writing like that," she says to herself, "in my preliminary studies in the library. I can translate it, given time." She purchases the tablet.

Turn 6 Movement, Curiositie Shoppe->Northside->Merchant District->Rivertown->French Hill->Silver Twilight Lodge

Mandy races through the streets to French Hill and into the Lodge house, where it's nice and dry.

Turn 6 Arkham Encounter, Silver Twilight Lodge->French Hill

Mandy walks across the candlelit vestibule. Three men emerge from a door at the other end and approach her, all wearing suits and ties. The one in the center has deep, dark eyes that seem to look through her. The two on either side of him look like hired muscle, big and dumb. Neither of them seems to have a neck.

"Good day, Miss Thompson," says the man in the middle. "I'm Carl Sanford."

"How did you know my name?" asks Mandy.

"I know all sorts of things. Would you care to join the Order?"

Mandy has heard of the Silver Twilight Lodge's collection of occult writings and artifacts. Having access to them would be a great boon. "Sure!"

"The monthly dues are three dollars, payable now."

Mandy frowns. She had spent so much on the tablet that she doesn't quite have enough left. "I, uh, seem to be a little short on funds right now."

"When you have them, return and we'll talk. Boys, show her the door." Carl Sanford spins on his heel and goes back through the interior door, closing it behind him. The two gorillas advance on her.

"That's okay, I can see it from here," quips Mandy. The brutes ignore her protests. Each of them grabs her by the elbow and they lift her off of the floor, walking towards the exit. "Look, fellas, there's got to be a better way to pick me up."

"You're real pretty," drawled one of them, stroking her cheek. "I bet we could have fun with you."

Mandy swallows in fear, but she thinks quickly. In her studies she had learned the Silver Twilight Lodge's secret handshake, and she tries it out on him. "It'll have to be another time, guys. I have important Lodge business."

The goon scratches his head, confused. Without two brain cells to rub together, he is perplexed by conflicting information. He and his buddy carry Mandy to the exit and gently set her down on her feet outside, closing the door behind them.

Luke--almost glad--draws his sword and charges the beastie, hewing at it with a reckless swing, which separates the globular head from the neck. The remains shrivel and dissolve into an oily puddle. Luke scoops with a tobacco tin at the puddle and takes a trophy.

Mandy races across Southside and into the comforting South Church. Once she's safely inside, she sits in a pew and studies the ancient tablet she had purchased. A woman jogs towards him, with a see-saw wobble, because she only has one shoe on, the other broken shoe is in her hand. She trips and collapses at Luke's feet; it is only now that he notices the blood, seeping from a bite to her shoulder.

"Ma'am, are you okay? How do you feel?"

The woman spits a molar and mucus, and pink saliva dribbles down her chin.

"How does it look to you?"

She rises from the sidewalk and wobbles away.

What was it about men approaching her while at this train station she wondered?
Tabs wrote:Michael McGlen spots the "fit" broad who wears a blue suit and glasses. He sidles up to her, smirking.

"New in town?"

ooc,how is that?
She stepped off the train and shivered quietly from the cold air as she pondered how to answer.

Michael gave a casual grin and pulled out a cloak, "Here speccy, I seen some crazy things these past nights, last thing I want is for some bird to die frm the cold on me"

He put the cloak around Carolyn's shoulders and held her for an inappropriately long time. Taken aback at this, Carolyn thought that she should give something in return lest he think that giving her clothes meant that he felt entitled to help her remove others.

Opening her bag she drew out the dynamite that she had been carrying for some crazy reason. Given the look of this man, he might have need of something this dangerous.

Michael's eyes widened as he saw the explosives. "... are you sure?"
"Better you carry it around than me"
Taking the dynamite and drawing away, he said "Well looks like you are much more of a wildcat than I thought."
Carolyn thought of her safe existence not too long ago "I just hope it doesn't blow your balls off" she replied with a wry smile.
Michael laughs loudly at this, drawing looks from other people in the station.
Carolyn continues, "I have seen my own fair share of nasty things myself over the past few days. I have a feeling that it is only going to get worse"
Michael looks into the distance at all the horror that Arkham contains. As the guards start ushering people on to the train to Kingsport, he hands over a heavy bag, "Here, I am going away for a while, if you are staying in Arkham you will probably need this more than I will." Stepping on to the train with a grin he says, "See you when I get back, and I'll make sure that my balls are safe for you".

Carolyn rolls her eyes at this as she waves him off.

When the train has gone, she found a quiet area and looked into the bag. She was shocked to see that it contained a Tommy gun. Dynamite had been one thing, what was she supposed to do with this?

Turn 9, Arkham Encounter, Hibb's Roadhouse
Pass a Luck (-1) check or a pickpocket cleans you out! Lose all your money.
Auto fail, and I wanna save my Clues.

Luke opens the door to Hibb’s Roadhouse and is hit by a wave of heat, smoke and music. He enters, loosening his robe as he does so, grinning, enthused by the swinging atmosphere. The piano-man is really laying it down, thumping at the keys with passion, rivulets of sweat streaming down his neck beneath his cardboard collar. Luke spots the old bartender, asleep in a corner, and chuckles to himself, the poor bugger must be exhausted! This is the place to relax and forget about all the crazy shit in Arkham, for a while, at least. A gorgeous woman in a satin dress sashays up to his table--Luke is captivated—“she can’t be a hooker, surely?” The woman drapes her arms over his shoulders.

“Mine’s a highball, lover, whisky and soda.”

Luke nods, playing it as cool as he knows how. He goes straight to the bar and orders: he is getting excited. The other—younger--bartender slams down the drinks.

“That’ll be a greenback.”

He reaches for his wallet, and as his hand gropes—comically--at nothing, Luke realises what a cretin he has been. The tail of his eye catches sight of a satin dress exiting through a backdoor. He doesn’t hesitate, but sprints away from the bar in pursuit. When he wrenches open the door, the pickpocket is in an alley, literally stealing away. She hesitates, then, runs. Luke’s excitement turns into rage, he sprints down the side of Hibb’s towards Easttown; quickly overhauling her Luke tugs at the woman’s flying tresses and in the same motion brings his knee up to the small of her back, the bone of his knee connects with the bone of her spine. She collapses with a pathetic yelp, Luke falls, and they crash together amongst the garbage bins. He sits atop, pinning her to the grimy ground, and slaps her across one cheek. She is panting in exertion and panic, Luke watches her chest heave . . . and thinks.

A deep bass voice:

“I’m Tom, an’ gen’lemen don’t strike a gal, not where I come from.”

“Tom! This man is trying to rape me.”

Luke springs away from the woman, as if she is red hot. He takes one look at Tom—a mountain of a man—and flees.

Turn 9 Other World Encounter, Unknown Kadath (2nd area)
As Mandy walks through the barren wastes, she comes across a tall figure shrouded in a black hooded cloak, much darker than the one she had given up, standing behind a small table with a chessboard on it, all set up to play. "Care for a friendly game of chess?" it asks in a deep, booming voice.

"You're not Death, are you?" she asks, her brow furrowed.

The figure chuckles. "No, not at all. But I do know how you can get home. If you win, I'll tell you. You can move first."

"Okay." Mandy approaches the table and surveys the board. She isn't very good at chess. She shifts the king's pawn forward two spaces as an opening move.

"If I win," says the figure as it moves its own king's pawn up two spaces, "all of your hard work will be undone."

Mandy gulps. She tries her best, but the pressure is getting to be too much. She is able to hold her own, but for a long time she can't make any progress. They go back and forth, pieces are exchanged, and Mandy is slowly but surely losing. She still has a similar number and type of pieces, but her adversary has better position. She pushes a pawn forward, not knowing what else to do, and looks up in surprise to see that she has placed her opponent's king in discovered check. The figure is forced into playing defensively, reacting to her moves instead of pressing the advantage. Finally, she manages to win a hard-fought victory. "Checkmate!" she exults. The strain has taken a lot out of her. "Now, how do I get home?"

"The gateway is behind me." The figure steps aside, and she can see a shimmering portal in the distance. "You may return to your own world. I would not want you to miss its destruction." It chuckles deeply again.

Mandy grimly proceeds forward. She glances back over her shoulder, but her erstwhile opponent has vanished!

bollocks! I never seen so many gates open without surges or Elder sign counters.

So he ain't got any resistances/immunities. I think I could just use my brazier for as long as possible which means I got Dread Curse of Azathoth for anyone with the Lore/Sanity to take it on.

I have taken the liberty of looking at all the equipment and stats and trying to come up with a plan.

I have a tommy gun and shrivelling:
Casting Modifier: -1
Sanity Cost: 1
Any Phase: Cast and exhaust to gain +6 to Combat checks until the end of this combat.
Hands: 1

That is 2/3 as good as your spell, but only takes one hand. If I can have something else 1 handed-say, the .38 revolver or the Enchanted Knife, I can kick out quite a few dice.

I am thinking that Mandy should have the Dread Curse of Azathoth and Luke's crystal of the elder things partly because she has a reasonable lore, but also is the only one who is blessed here, so since the Dread Curse is the single most damaging thing we have, that should go to her for maximum effectiveness.

For most turns both Luke with Sword of Glory which is 2 handed +6 dice, and Michael with the Tommy Gun +6 dice will be well equipped, but for the first turn, Luke would be better equipped to have dynamite (+8 dice) as he has a re-roll to the combat check.

Oh, and I have research materials which isn't a clue token, but can be used, I think Mandy with her blessing would be the best recipient for that.

Taking all the above into account, plus focus changes for the fight scores, assuming Rex doesn't get Devoured, and -1 per player for the clue tokens left on the board, we will be rolling about 44 dice in the first turn, with quite a few of those being re-rolled / blessed!

I'm in a hurry so I haven't read your posts yet.

Question for Mr. Handy: Miskatonic Expansion adds 8 new Epic Battle cards to Kingsport's 16, do I shuffle them together and draw 16?

Re: Kingsport Horror (ic)

by Mr. Handy
The rules say to shuffle all the green cards together, shuffle all the red cards together, and then put the green cards on top of the red cards.

We need twice as many hits to win, for a total of 110 (ten per Doom token). We'll be lucky if we get half of that. Once we start dropping, and we will as we fail our Focus rolls when Yibby attacks, the damage we can inflict will fall off. Also, anyone devoured loses his/her stuff, so whoever is currently the first player in a given round should have the weakest weapons. The exception is the Dynamite, which is a one-shot weapon anyway.

We do have a bunch of rerolls available. Mandy's Research can be used for anyone, so we will have to attack in the proper turn order until I've used it up. It will only reroll failed dice, preserving any successes. It cannot be used for the Focus rolls, but Blessing will help there. So will the Bullwhip, even if it's not in anyone's hand, but that only works for combat rolls on one die and only for whoever holds it. Marksman, on the other hand, rerolls all dice, whether they succeed or not. It should only be used when you roll poorly. We lose all of our Clues, but we do have Research Materials. That won't help on the Focus rolls either.

I don't want to use Dread Curse of Azathoth in the first round, as I can't maximize both my Lore and Fight at the same time. However, I could use it for a little while starting in the second round. Carolyn should use it in the first round, as she has better Lore. Carolyn's special ability will help for as long as she survives. I think I should use Shrivelling plus either the Enchanted Knife or the .38 Revolver. In fact, that may be a better long-term arrangement. I can still get +9 dice that way, with less chance of spell failure and less Sanity loss. Once my Sanity drops to 1, I could switch to the Brazier, which gives +8 dice. By then I won't need to use Focus to adjust sliders.

They make the final battle more interesting/challenging: flavour text, additional conditions, etc.--I'll post the cards.

Trade with Michael: Sword of Glory for Dynamite; give to Mandy Crystal of the Elder Things + .38 revolver?

ProfToff's investigator is in danger of being devoured . . . I reckon the Brazier ought to go to someone else for this turn. If anyone thinks up a better trade than the ones I posted, go ahead and action these.

Let's finish our Upkeep and then I'll draw the first Epic Battle Card.

OOC,I need to know what I'll be using before I decide on my Upkeep. I go last anyway, after Carolyn. Give the Dynamite to Carolyn. If she's devoured, she loses nothing. Someone else should hold Dread Curse this round. Luke should use the Brazier. I don't need the .38, I have the Enchanted Knife. I would like Shrivelling, though. However, if I have the .38 as well, it would help in the event that I fail my spell check. I could also use the Research Materials best.

I note you say Carolyn and not Rex, is this because the Epic Battle Variant does not mention that the first player marker is passed to the left--as in the base game rulebook? If so, the first player changes in round 2?

I'm happy with your trade suggestions.

OOC,I hadn't thought of that. If Rex is the first player, then he should definitely get the Dynamite and Carolyn can use the Dread Curse of Azathoth. She should also get the Crystal in that case. She can use her special ability on me in the first two rounds (I'm down 1 Sanity, and I'll lose another if I cast Shrivelling). After that, she'll need it for herself as the Crystal will be used up.

Okay, I'll rule that Peacehammer is still the first player, so it is Carolyn facing up to Yibby this round. And next round, before Upkeep, the first player will become ProfToff.

So Carolyn could be devoured, therefore she has Dynamite and trades away everything else.

Where's ProfToff, BTW.

No. The Epic Battle Cards are self-explanatory--you'll see after I post 'em--sometimes investigators attack first, sometimes the ancient one. And Research Materials, no, because "discard instead of spending a Clue token," and Clues are for skill checks.

OOC,I looked through the rules, and the Refresh phase is the same in the Epic Battle Variant. The first player marker is passed partway through that phase, so Rex is now the first player and should get the Dynamite. This means that Carolyn should keep Dread Curse of Azathoth and get the Crystal of the Elder Things. Also, give her one of the +6 weapons in case the spell check fails. I'm going under the assumption that I'm getting Shrivelling, the .38 Revolver, and the Research Materials. Also, Carolyn forgot to use her special ability. I could use that Sanity point restored. Mudslides and The Great Ritual should be discarded at this point. Roll to keep Blessing (on anything but a 1) (1d6=3). Mandy increases Fight from 2 to 3 and decreases Will from 3 to 2. Mandy increases Lore from 2 to 3 and decreases Luck from 2 to 1.

Final Battle Round 1, Investigators Refresh

Mandy hurries through the gateway and finds herself back in the woods, where she is met with a horrifying sight. An enormous creature with thousands of glowing eyes is rampaging through the forest towards Arkham. "No, I'm too late!" she cries. "There's only one thing to do. I have to stop it or go down fighting." As she steels herself and advances on Yibb-Tstll, she sees four other people coming from town to join the battle, a couple of whom look familiar. They band together for the final conflict.

The Final Battle

Two Worlds Being Torn Apart (MH) Battle Condition
"Strange debris was everywhere."
Keep this card in play for the rest of the game. For each "6" an investigator rolls during a Combat check (not including any die bonuses or penalties to the die) add an additional success to the total number of successes rolled.

For each "1" an investigator rolls during a Combat check (not including any bonuses or penalties to the die) reduce the total number of successes rolled by 1 (to a minimum of 0).

Immediately draw and resolve another Epic Battle card.

Time Stands Still (MH) Battle Condition
"Never before had I been so perfectly focused and clear. I took in the whole scene in detail."
Keep this card in play for the rest of the game. Investigators receive a +1 to all skill checks except Combat checks.

Each time an investigator is devoured, all remaining investigators lose their choice of either 1 Stamina or 1 Sanity. This loss cannot be reduced by any items or abilities.

Immediately draw and resolve another Epic Battle card.

Let's post in player order--we'll look at it next round, to see how it's working--: Rex, Luke, Michael, Mandy and Carolyn; if someone rolls badly, he may ask to use Mandy's "Research" (re-roll)--but that is down to Mr. Handy, so each player waits on the decision. But once "Research" has been used, post in any order (I cannot think of anything else that effects player order).
The Ancient One attacks last, Rex's focus is 2, ProfToff needs a success, or he is devoured.

Okay, here we go, ProfToff rolls first. 110 hits on Yibb-Tstll to save the world. . . .

This one seems to be fairly neutral as it both helps and hinders, however as we have a few sources of re-rolls, I guess it will help make the sucesses bigger.

Well, +1 to skill checks will make spellcasting easier, and the stamina loss isn't that bad because the GOO attack will either kill us or not, no actual damage, but sanity loss will affect spellcasting.

I don't understand the reasoning behind these trades!! Is the GOO attack not againts focus and since Luke and Michael only have 1 focus and I have 2 why are they more likely to survive the first round *scratches head* Also if I am honest I don't remember ever agreeing to swap the Brazier and would not if sat at a table unless it seemed justified (which in this case I can't see!)

Sorry to seem pedantic but I just like to be clear before doing the rolling!

No, not pedantic at all. I guess because of your enforced absence you've missed some of the chat. It is only the first player who is at risk of being devoured and the first player is you! That is why you've got the Dynamite, if Rex doesn't make it to round 2 we haven't lost the good kit; he can have the Brazier back next round.

aaaaah, gotcha. Sorry hadn't read the GOO text proper, thought it was gonna be ultashort battle(still is :( ) In that case here goes the dynamite!!

-2 San to 1
Fight 4 (+1S) (+8D) = 13 Not sure if what the modifier is so I will take away dice from left to right)
13d6.hits(5)=7
Focus = 2
2d6.hits(5)=1
Huzzah, I live for a few more rounds

So it comes down to this. Rex found himself lined up in Main St with 4 other desperate looking individuals, a couple he had met fleetingly over the last couple of days. Passing his Brazier and parchment to his compatriots he found a stick of dynamite thrust into his hands in return. He reached into his pocket for a match, lit the stick and hurled it towards the centre of the amorphous, inky black cloud in front of him, trying to ignore the multitude of eyes which appeared at random and stared at him with evil malevolence. He could feel his sanity slipping away with every dread gaze. KABOOOOM went the thunderous explosion, and it took all of Rex's conentration to dodge to the side when a smoky pseudoped leapt out towards him.

Well done Rex! He loses 2 Sanity due to "Waves of Madness" Epic Battle card, which cannot be helped. Rex rolled: 3d6.hits(5) → [3,1,3,5,5,5,1,6,2,5,6,2,6] = (7), due to "Two Worlds Being Torn Apart" Battle Condition, 6s count as 2 successes, 1s reduce successes; and the combat modifier is -1--you said "take away dice from left to right," so drop the "3"; I reckon it's 7 +3 -2 =8 successes.

Image
Round 1
Luke attacks and loses 2 Sanity. 3[Fight] +8[Brazier] -1[combat modifier] (1d6=1, 1d6=1, 1d6=3, 1d6=5, 1d6=2, 1d6=2, 1d6=3, 1d6=2, 1d6=4, 1d6=6); exhaust "Marksman" skill: R1(ii) vs. Yibby (1d6=3, 1d6=5, 1d6=1, 1d6=4, 1d6=6, 1d6=6, 1d6=1, 1d6=5, 1d6=6, 1d6=2); i reckon it's 5 +3 -2 =6 successes.

Combat check (Fight 3 +6 [Shrivelling] +3 [Enchanted Knife] - 1 [Yibb-Tstll] = 11 dice) attacking Yibb-Tstll (6s count as 2 successes, 1s count as -1) (11d6.hits(4)=5). That's actually 7 successes right there (one 1 and three 6s). I rolled two 4s, so the Blessing pays off again. Using Research to reroll failed dice to attack Yibb-Tstll, Round 1 (6d6.hits(4)=3). I got two 1s this time, so that negates one of the new successes (the other one replaces the one I rolled before), for a net gain of 4. 11 hits so far, or more than an entire Doom token! Using Bullwhip to reroll a 1, Round 1 (1d6.hits(4)=0). That cancels a 1, so 12 hits. This brings us to a total of 28/110 so far. Final Battle Round 1, Investigators Attack

Mandy takes a moment to exchange equipment with the others fighting alongside her, learning a powerful spell that she is only barely able to master. She lays into Yibb-Tstll with an unmatched fury, her spell and her special knife devastating it. She even uses her trusty bullwhip to swing out of harm's way at one point. Even so, with all the damage she and her companions had inflicted on it, it shows no sign of falling any time soon. However, it is definitely weakening. Mandy feels her mind starting to slip away, and she staggers back to join the other woman, who had helped her steady herself before the battle.

All this time Carolyn had been looking at this incursion as an abstract problem to by analysed. Now faced with the full horror of the monster in front of her, she only dimly remembered exchanging items with people and all the strategied discussed. Failing to use the items given she could only fire off a single bullet as the monstrosity advanced.

Taking the spell and crystal thrust into her hands, she concentrated. Confusion reigned and her thoughts clouded, but then Carolyn concentrated and read it all again, with a little help from a friend, she managed to cast the spell which caused harm to the great leviathan which threatened all. She could feel the draining effect from the spell, but it was curiously distant, and realised that the crystal was taking the drain away.

Luke cheers as his companions strike at Yibb-Tstll, and is relieved when the chap with a goatee dodges the pseudopod.

The pause before the next onslaught allows him to hand out his items, he gives everything away, including his treasured Gate Box, because he realises his turn to face the jelly-demon is at hand. He smiles as the trade takes place, hoping his hands are not trembling too much.

Luke attacks, he has nothing to discard. 3[Fight] -1[c. m.] (1d6=4, 1d6=5), 1 success (he won't use his "Marksman" skill).

Michael does not attack.

"I don't know why you're so cheerful, it's your turn next." The words ring in Michael's head like a death knell. He loses hope.

If trading goes before attacking this turn, does anyone have an attack which is powerful enough to warrant throwing away a weapon / a weapon / spell not good enough to keep?

Well, there is the bullwhip which basically allows 1 re-roll, while useful I am not sure if it is better than a whole turn's attack from someone, and the 'Mists of Releh' can be ditched. Mandy has an enchanted knife (+3), a pistol (+3) as well as shrivelling, so might be worth giving up one of the one handed items - just a case of who it goes to.

If I pass the lore check then I can kick out 13 dice, Rex reliably kicks out 12 dice, Michael reliably puts out 12, Mandy also puts out 12 with a successful lore check - and is also blessed.

OOC,Unfortunately, I don't think Luke can attack, as the card says you must discard a Weapon or Spell in order to do so. It makes no difference whether you have nothing to discard or choose not to do so. I'll ditch Mists of Releh, as it's otherwise useless. Spell check (Lore 4 -1 [Shrivelling] +1 [Time Stands Still] = 4 dice), casting Shrivelling, Round 2 (4d6.hits(4)=3). Canceled the last 1 and got an additional success, so 16 damage. Tacked onto the 32 from Round 1, that gives us 48/110 hits. Dare I hope?

Final Battle Round 2, Investigators Attack

The sight of the monstrosity disturbs Mandy, and she forgets the new spell that the strange man with the dreamlike expression just taught her. She presses her attack regardless, as she still has the rest of her arcane knowledge and her deadly weapons. This attack is even more destructive than her first effort, and she sees the enormous creature begin to falter, but it is far from beaten. She does not even notice that her companions have not joined her this time.

Okay, he only got 1 success anyhow.

Carolyn could discard the Dread Curse and use the Tommy Gun instead? . . . I think that there is a fine line between conserving items and scoring successes.

Tabs wrote:Carolyn could discard the Dread Curse and use the Tommy Gun instead? . . . I think that there is a fine line between conserving items and scoring successes.
I think that it depends on how many attacks I am likely to get. Lets work it out:
Spoiler:
I will be first player in 4 turns, at which point I will have a 1 in 3 chance of surviving. (Focus 2, -1 for the penalty).

So, probably 4 attacks.

I have 2 uses of the curse with the elder crystal, after that, I would solely be using the Tommy Gun. So at the end of 4 turns It will be:

1) 0 (This turn)
2) 12
3) 12
4) 9

Total: 33

Although I could cast the curse again on turn 4 using regular sanity, for a total of 36, but it is less reliable.

Just using Tommy gun (fight 4+6-1):

1) 9
2) 9
3) 9
4) 9

Total: 36
I guess I can discard the curse, give the crystal to Mandy next turn, and fire away.

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3646999/
9d6 → [6,4,2,2,1,4,3,6,3] = 4-1 = net 3 successes

After casting the last spell, alien thoughts started assaulting Carolyn, "what are humans?", "why should Azathoth curse an ancient being such as Yibb-Tstll?", "who are these ants which seek to stop the rise of Yibb-Tstll?", "what is grapefruit?"...

These curious thoughts swirling around made her realise what unnatural forces we were all playing with, this Dread curse could be no good for humanity, discarding it instantly made her feel better and clutching the cold iron of the Tommy gun fired off into the pulpy mass of Yibb-Tstll.

Watching the other people who had come forward to confont this horror, Carolyn realised that they were all undergoing this same confusion, only Mandy seemed to be able to shake it off.

The monster lurches towards Luke; he knows his time is up, just knows. OOC,Yeah, Mandy sure is awesome! :D Mandy loses 1 Stamina for Luke's death. If there is another Sanity penalty (I'm not familiar with the Epic Battle cards), Mandy needs that point more. She's only at 2 right now, and losing her chance to attack will hurt us more. Everyone should have a +6 weapon, even Michael. As it stands, we have a +8 and three +6 attacks that are not Spells and can be used every turn (Brazier, Tommy Gun, Sword of Glory, and Enchanted Knife/.38 Revolver). Even if the first player is devoured, we wouldn't be able to use the extra weapon anyway. Might as well get in those last licks. The red cards are much, much worse, I hear, though I've probably never lasted long enough for them to appear. One of them ends the game immediately with our defeat. I'm unsure myself, but see Mr. Handy's comment. I remember that one of the "easier" Epic Battle card reads "only investigators attack."

Good point. Michael takes 1 Stamina damage, but reduces this to 0 due to his "Strong Body" ability.

The Ancient One lunges at Michael, with suckers, pseudopods and all sorts of weird appendages flying at him; screaming an unholy din as it does so--the thing has obviously been hurt. He deftly dodges Yibb-Tstll's attack, and laughs heartily when it retreats.

"Is that all you got? you fu**er!"

OOC,Mandy loses 1 Stamina for Michael's death. Taint of Evil affects every roll, including the Focus roll for when Yibby attacks. That 5 became a 4, which fails unless you have a Blessing. I already factored in all of our successes in the last round in the total in my previous post. We've done 71/110 damage so far.

OOC,I kept my Blessing, so I have a 75% chance to survive this round. It may pay for me to keep most of my stuff and inflict as much damage as I can even if it does turn out to be my last chance, though I'll hand the .38 Revolver off to someone else just in case. I'll use the Research Materials this round. If I don't need it to cast Shrivelling, I'll use it on my attack. The Crystal will be used up this round. http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/viewtop ... 143&t=3262

Epic battle - add a point to both sanity and stamina

My attack:

9d6 (+4 fight, +6 Tommy gun -1 yibby):

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3655143/
9d6 → [1,6,3,6,6,2,3,5,4] = net 7 sucesses.

Following the pricking on her neck, Carolyn was alert to the pseudopod which launched at her from the main mass, she dodged aside, but it was still too close, at the last moment she parried the mass away using the flat of the tommy gun and spun to a safer position. During the attack Yibb Tstll had overextended slightly opening up a weak spot, and Carolyn took full advantage by firing a hail of bullets causing it to roar. This success bouyed her greatly as she readied for another shot.

OOC,Mandy regains 2 Stamina. That leaves the door open for me to pick up a Sanity point next round. Spell check (Lore 4 -1 [Shrivelling] +1 [Time Stands Still] = 4 dice), casting Shrivelling, Round 5 (4d6.hits(4)=3). Crystal of the Elder Things is used up to prevent Sanity loss. Fight 3 +6 [Shrivelling] +3 [Enchanted Knife] - 1 [Yibb-Tstll] = 11 dice) attacking Yibb-Tstll, Round 5 (11d6.hits(4)=6). Sweet! :D That's eight hits to start. Using Research to reroll failed dice attacking Yibb-Tstll, Round 5 (5d6.hits(4)=2). That's another three, so 11 so far. Using Bullwhip to reroll a 2, Round 5 (1d6.hits(4)=0). No further improvement. We had 71 hits after last round. With Carolyn's 7, Rex's 9, and Mandy's 11, that brings us to 98/110. I think next round will do it!

Final Battle Round 5, Investigators Attack

Mandy attacks Yibb-Tstll from behind - if this thing can even be said to have a back - and cuts into it with gusto. It looks on the verge of collapse now, but it is still extremely dangerous.

Bugger, two 1s cancel the 2 hits, bye world. Just in time to go to a festival. Best of luck peeps, I shall check back on our progress when I get back as it don't look so set in stone now.

After watching the other two gents both come to a sticky end Rex sensed that the end was nearing, one way or another. His chivalristic instinct kicking in he stepped to the fore, in front of both the ladies, determined to protect them to the last. He passed his treasured brazier to one of them wondering if he would smell his lovely scent again and was handed a Tommy Gun back in return. Gripping the handles and squeezing the trigger hard he stepped forward screaming, "Your time has come you ugly, otherworld, motherfucker!"

Rex had the pleasure of seeing a couple of pseudopods sheared off from the hail of lead he subjected the beast to. His grin swiftly dissolved when an oily tendril with a huge unblinking eye at its tip emerged from the ground in front of him. Sudden realisation over his encounter in the diners outhouse dawned upon him as the tendril wrapped itself around him and drew him into the oily black morass in front.

Hey Toff,

Isn't it Yibbys attack first?

If you get 2 sucesses on the focus roll, then you will be blessed which means you will have scored some hits with that roll.

SANITY 3/6
STAMINA 3/4

SPEED/SNEAK 3/0
FIGHT/WILL 4/1
LORE/LUCK 5/2

Blessed.

-1 san for Rex being devoured.

Attack:

4-fight, 8 brazier of souls, -1 yibby = 11

11d6 → [6,6,3,5,4,5,2,1,2,6,1] = 7 net sucesses. - 105/110 hits!

Yibb Tstll seemed to be testing each one of us in turn. The reporter Rex seemed to be next in line, he sensed this himself, and got ready for a heroic sacrifice handing away his destructive brazier. What a man.

Seeing no reason that he should take on the abomination unarmed, Carolyn passed him her Tommy Gun.

Alas, it wasn't enough and the poor man was devoured in front of her.

Saying to Mandy, "Just us girls then"

The time for holding back was long past, and taking hold of the Brazier, Carolyn charged forward and lit it, the souls attacking the abomination, Carolyn sensed the end of the fight was near: it was weakening.

OOC,Wait a minute! I'm using Research so that Rex can reroll all of his failed dice (the successes remain). He doesn't die after all and may get some more hits. The order of attacks depends on what the card says, and this one has us attack first. Most green cards seem to be like that.

Well, if Rex can get 3 more net sucesses, and lose the 1s, he will have struck the big bad thing down.

A Lovecraftian festival: dark rites, unholy feasting, folk wearing über-realistic fish masks? or an English music festival in the rain?

Oh yes!

OOC,It's better than that. With Research you only reroll failed dice, not successful ones. You keep the two successes and only roll 8 dice, so the last two are disregarded. This gives you six hits in all. That brings us to 104/110. Carolyn will put us over the top even if Mandy doesn't, but I still need to roll my attack to make sure I don't die, as I go before her. Spell check (Lore 4 -1 [Shrivelling] +1 [Time Stands Still] = 4 dice), casting Shrivelling, Round 6 (4d6.hits(4)=2). Fight 3 +6 [Shrivelling] +3 [Enchanted Knife] - 1 [Yibb-Tstll] = 11 dice) attacking Yibb-Tstll, Round 6 (11d6.hits(4)=7). That makes seven hits, so Mandy strikes the death blow. :D

Final Battle Round 6, Investigators Attack

Mandy makes one final lunge at Yibb-Tstll, plunging her magical knife into its largest eye. The creature howls in agony and collapses, then fades out of existence. Mandy raises her arms and cheers. "We did it!" she exults. Then she sinks to her knees, exhaustion kicking in all at once now that the battle is finally over. Though some of their comrades had fallen in battle, they had not perished in vain. The world is safe again...but for how long?
